GRRM is a 76-year-old man who doesn’t have the luxury of playing respectability politics with younger writers who disrespect his work. His name and legacy are on the line, especially after the GOT Season 8 fallout. Condal has a finished story at his disposal, yet still seems determined to steer straight into an iceberg.
I know there are many fans who were willing to give season 2 the benefit of doubt given the behind the scenes issues with the episodes being cut to 8 last minute. The Blog post certainly has changes a lot of people views on it. I wasn't to that worried about season 3 and 4, not so much now.
@@WorldOfWesteros “There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again.” George Bush I completely agree with you. I noticed those toxic butterflies in Season 1, and now that Martin has confirmed them for S2, I’ve decided to wait until the show finishes all its seasons before watching, and that’s only if it’s actually good. I refuse to invest my time just to be disappointed again. I’ll stick to the ASOIAF books and fan art, letting my imagination fill in the gaps.
What he doesn’t have the luxury of is taking fifteen years to publish a book. If he’s worried about legacy, currently this is where he’s at. The absolute state of GoT and HotD, and an unfinished book series. The reality is in another 15-20 years, he will most likely be dead.
@@iampfaff Martin came from a working-class background, living paycheck to paycheck, and had to write to survive. He didn’t have the luxury of leisurely completing his books like some other authors. Now that he’s financially secure, he can take his time to create the story he envisions without the pressure of deadlines hanging over him. Yes, it’s been 15 years, but his legacy is more than just unfinished books. It’s a massive, complex world that has captured the imaginations of millions. If he doesn’t finish the series, so be it-I won’t be an entitled fan just because I didn’t get what I wanted.
I would argue that while the STORYmay be finished, its still a bad situation. Hotd is a history book, character arcs are very shallow and can always be excused by saying there is no source for why somebody did something. Unlike Got the writers HAVE to fill in gaps and sometimes make up stuff. Some of that stuff stinks, some of it is great. The queens are weird, Aegon is great, Otto, Larys are entertaining whenever on screen...honestly its mostly the female characters in the show that are on the bad side.
Yes he was right too. HBO have changed way too much and now have seemed to have wrote them selfs into a corner. I'm sick of TV executives thinking that they know better and make dumb changes that no one asked for. Season 2 had great moments but as a whole the season was a let down compared to the first one.
What baffles me somewhat is fans were talking about the Maelor issue as early as season 1, and the impact of Maelor being possibly cut from the show. I'm sure they know the impact it will have.
@@WorldOfWesteros They don't seem to be able to think of the big picture. They are good at episode and cool scenes but just don't think 2 seasons from now and think/hope it will all be ok. Given how good season 1 was, it's all just a shame.
@@amorojaz27 i don't think George approves on removing Nettles at all. I figured that out when he was so annoyed about Sheepstealer being in the Vale. Was it really the location of the dragon or the possible removal of his rider? Daemon's decline is triggering, honestly.

It's been going in the wrong direction from day one. Making Alicent and Rhaenyra besties has taken over everything else. These writers consider their friendship and love for one another as the driving force of the show, when it's really just contrived bs.
It kinda reminds of The Boys now and how the Homelander side are all just completely bad and messed up but the Starlight side are just normal and good, with very little nuance.

House of the Dragon on the other hand is supposed to be about a feudal dynastic war involving Dragons yet they chose to shoehorn themes of modern feminism as a core tenet of the show’s identity whitewashing all the female characters (except just making Alicent a complete dumbass POS) and then trying to push this idea that they both just want to run away from it all and Lesbian marry each other or some shit. I cannot believe we reached this point. A few years back I used to read GRRM hopes for this fresh adaptation of Fire and Blood and was as excited as he was about it...after the shameless disrespect from the production team to the original story I am angry and cannot imagine how powerless GRRM must be feeling. Adding to this is the fact that he postponed writing books for dedicating the last decade and a half to television...and television has repaid him with such a low blow. Sure...he has made money, and contracts are signed...but when it comes to protecting your true work we must allow him to be emotional, if he is going to accept the consequences. I absolutely agree with George but I don’t really even care anymore about the HBO shows at this point. He needs to finish the series not just for us, but for himself. His legacy as of now is someone who stopped well short of the finish line and is too worried about adaptions that really don’t matter to the book readers whatsoever. Please George your longest supporters deserve it!
The child actor excuse is so lame. They could've done it the way the blood&cheese in the GOT lore animated video was edited, no gore, no beheading, no blood but it still kept the integrity of the scene.
Its kinda ironic that the GOT lore animations about the Dance of the Dragons are more faithful to the source material than the show that is suppose to be adapting it.
@@anna_luin exactly, that's what they did for jaehaerys' funeral, why not do it for b&c, and it would've been easier to edit too since it was dark or they could've just used shadows for all I care. Also, adding the Alicent Criston s*x scene? what the hell was that and what were they going for? Shock factor? It's honestly just bad writing.
Im surprised he didnt address the Alicent problem. The destruction of her character is even a bigger problem than Maelor. Of course, this could have been one of the things he was hinting at in future blogs. Condom and Hess really dug a hole for themselves with those forced Rhaenyra/Alicent scenes. The Alicent problem started in season 1 though in episode 8 at that supper scene.
I cannot possibly imagine this version of alicent saying "bastards blood shed at war" to rhaenyra. We should have gotten an ambitious and shrewd yet misguided lady who will do anything to protect her kids and instead got a weepy mess of a woman that started a war over a misunderstanding then tried to back out.
It started in the first episode when they aged Rhaenyra up and aged Alicent down, when they clearly had no plan for how it would affect the story. At this point that was a huge colossal waste of time.
Xiran did imply some of his rants was about Rhaenyra and Alicent. The reason might be any criticism of their relationship may be interpreted as criticism of Emma and Olivia, and given Martin allegedly misgendered Emma before, he might not want to give fans the impression that he's queerphobic, especially in a fight where he wants them to be on his side.

Grrm is the man. This blog and butterfly effects were meant to be a microcasm of the chsnges to come down the line. Grrm is usually a polite and giving man. For him to be this publicly sharp should serve as a warning to us all.
GRRM drops the winds of winter and sets the release date for Dreams of Spring, he instantly wins any and every debate against who ever would dare. He is wasting his energy fighting the wrong battles. Shame!
Been saying this since the GoT days😭, realistically there is no way of telling George story without cutting scenes that writer rooms would deem “not necessary” for adaption ESPECIALLY live action adaptation. GoT season 1-4 did a masterful job🤌🏽 but when you cut enough plot lines the story becomes an incoherent mess ie. GoT season 5,6,7,8 P.S………………. F**K d&d
@@youngveteran6368 i dont think theres a realistic way of doing the story justice the more i learn about it unless you wanna do 20 seasons and spend a billion dollars. Grrm did too good of a job writing the lore unfortunately.
Should have done this years ago ever since George Lucas have shown success with the Clone Wars series. Make it animated so that all the grand locations, specific character appearances, and epic events have a chance to happen without murdering the budget.
I've been saying this for a while now. I refuse to watch any of these shows until the shows at least get the aesthetics correct. Shows with a fifth of the budget can get things like hair and eye color correct, but HBO hasn't been able to do it through 2 shows over a decade.

@@youngveteran6368 it's not just THAT specific scene that is the problem it's EVERY scene where the children are supposed to be present for every scene the children are present add another much younger child into the mix leads to filming slowing down significantly. Think about how little we have seen Aegon III and Viserys II they are being utilized so little because of how difficult filming with them is because of child labor laws and how difficult filming those scenes are for small children and the people involved. It's not like they can just set down a child in the middle of the set without their real parents and expect things to run smoothly some days a child will be fine but others the child might just be in a cracky mood and cry and bawl the whole time.
It’s a shame to see this happening when the material for this was actually finished. I have no love for D&D after what they did to Game of Thrones, but they were masters of adapting what was actually written (with some changes here and there which ultimately helped at times) and probably could have done it better.
That the HBO podcast that dropped right before the blogpost also covers the omission of Nettles makes me think some of the season 3 and 4 poison is related to her. I think he's pissed because I think the purpose of Nettles was always to prove that you *don't* need Targaryen blood to ride a dragon, that it was always about power (cue that Varys speech about power and how is resides where people think it resides). I think Vermithor chose Hugh because he radiated power, not because he's Saera's bastard and thus a Targ (although he clearly is and I like that he is, story-wise). I think GRRM wanted to make HotD the first spinoff because I think that's going to be really important in the main book series, the fact that being a dragon rider isn't just for people with the blood of the dragon or roots to Old Valyria. I think GRRM wanted to make HotD to undo a lot of the harm of the back half of GoT but also to fix some of the lore and I think he's now realizing they're just gonna mess up his lore even more and he's pissed. I think he knew they were going to change things in the adaptation as they always do and I think he was fine with it, to a point, but not to this point. I think he realized with the outline of season 3 that they weren't going to fix the dragon rider thing, among some of the other things that were crucial to him agreeing to this spin-off. I think he knew they were making taking Nettles's story to give to Rhaena so the only way the things that need fixing (like the Nettles omission) could be fixed is by him doing this. He knew it was too late to fix all the scripts for season 3 so he was trying to find ways to fix it in season 4. I think Ryan stopped wanting to speak to him due to ego and I think George knew the only way to fix his life's work was to do something unprofessional, like this, because he knew that he was in the position to do so. I think he's making a stand for all authors who might want to sell rights to their work for adaptations. I think the Nettles omission can be fixed with the character of Ulf and it could be fixed by Season 4 at the latest hence why he dropped his blogpost when he did, but I guess only time will tell. I think GRRM is gonna see how Dunk and Egg goes, but like you, I also think that will be the last adaptation from this universe, nothing else will get greenlit while he lives. If he has a really good will, like Beckett did, the ban on adaptations might even last posthumously.
@@lilacsandobsidian merging Nettles with Rhaena is one of the better decisions, I think. It removes another gross romance and gratuitous love triangle. It also spares people watching Daemon groom another girl.
@@amorojaz27 I disagree obvi ☺ I think there never was a romance, I think that was salacious and added in by the in-world authors of F&B and it's a missed opportunity for the show to cut her out for that reason, but I believe it's way deeper than that. I think the show is gonna go with what most of the fandom believes: that dragon riding is tied to having certain specific Valyrian bloodlines and since the Targs are the last dragon riding fam left on Planetos, you need Targ blood to be a dragon rider, which is why I think GRRM is pissed at the omission of Nettles. I believe the role of Nettles was always about how dragon riding *is not* tied to bloodlines only, although they do help. I think the first dragon riders were just courageous, bold, fearless humans who believed they were capable of taming a dragon and eventually, a dragon recognized the power and that was how dragon riding was born. I think the point of Nettles is that it was never about needing Targaryen blood, it was about having the power and courage to claim a dragon without fear. They can still tell the same story with Ulf (Hugh obvi would've been way better to tell this story because of how he claimed Vermy, ad because Ulf was kinda blundering, but Hugh is a confirmed Targ in the show so they can't tell that story thru him if they omit Nettles, the only character we already know who it could maybe work w is Ulf, but I doubt they're gonna do this), if they change the scripts for season 3. Feel free to disagree, but until GRRM puts out more books, I'm not changing my mind. I have not read any compelling theories that would make me change my mind, they all boil down to Targ blood = magic and to me, that's not the story GRRM is telling. But when the whole series it done, perhaps I'll be proven wrong. We shall see.
@@lilacsandobsidian still, Nettles sounds very cliche for an author who claims to scorn cliches. Plus, if they made Daemon and Nettles platonic, many, many fans would be complaining they defanged the relationship and that it's less interesting.

GRRM should have shown more respect for us, his oldest readers, who have been waiting for his books for years. We had started reading his books years before the first show GoT.. He is a brilliant writer but It was we readers who recognized his talent and praised his work, recommending and talked about his books, that brought him fame and made possible for him to see his work televised. He had years to finish them during the show and later. He was making promises to us readers, breaking every promise, and now he is mad because the showrunners broke some promise to him. He should have fulfilled his promises first before preaching others on broken promises.
Honestly... while I can understand GRRM's frustration to an extent, I'm not on his side in this. Fire and Blood isn't a novel in its own right, it was intentionally written akin to medieval chronicles. Any period drama based on such a chronicle is going to take huge liberties, especially in characterisation and the characters' motivations, and HotD is no different. And since period dramas aren't documentaries, they mess with historical events, as well, for the sake of the story and its format, and again HotD is no different. Expecting anything else would be just naïve. As for the impact of the changes: that of Maelor the Missing can easily be worked around. He is not a character, he is a plot device, and no matter how proud GRRM may be about coming up with this sequence of events, people commit suicide or riot for a multitude of reasons that can be utilised, and utilising Helaena's visions, which the show has steadily been building up on, would be in character for the show version of her (which I honestly find more interesting than GRRM's Helaena). I am way more worried about replacing Nettles with Rhaena, though with a bit of ingenuity, that can be made to work, as well - I guess. On the whole, I never expected the adaptation to be very faithful, and most of the time, they are doing a fine job of a period family drama, so I am quite content to see where they will take the story. There is one point in which I would take GRRM's side, and that is if he indeed had been lied to about what they were or weren't going to do in the show. The thing is, did Condal really lie, or did plans change, perhaps for reasons out of his control? I don't think we will ever know.
If George R.R. Martin is upset with the direction that individuals are taking his literature in, he has a right to voice that opinion in the same way that fans have the right to if they disagree with the direction the show is going. My personal gripe with the show is I know that scenes from the book have to be adapted to the a Television format but why in the hell do these show-writers insist on cutting themes and storylines from the original story, especially ones that are central to the plot?!
Cutting nettles and merging her with rhaena shows they don't understand the stories themes at all. Rhaena plays a big part in securing the vale alliance by endearing the lords and lady's to her and by extension the black faction. She perfectly performs her gender role and shows a more mature understanding of gender and society. She actualizes as a lady in a positive way instead of going the route hotd and got did which was having their female protagonists either reject femininity out right or be sexually assaulted or both. This self actualization results in her hatching a dragon which later makes her the most powerful person in westeros. Nettles on the opposite end of the spectrum both in behavior and class goes about things in a very tomboyish way. Both characters are presented as heroic with their expression being treated as equally valid (you're not supposed to agree with the way the maesters frame nettles).
Condal and co. and make all the changes they want, that's ok. What's disrespectful and baffling is their decision to somehow paint their version as "what really happened"
@@Spoogebro I think y’all give rhaena FAR TOO MUCH VALUE ON HER ROLE IN THE STORY. He was there when they made the changes and he could have pushed them to keep the story close to the original work. I think he's just doing the blame game too keep fans fighting so he can procastinate finishing his books. FINISH THE BOOKS AND I MIGHT CARE.
I understand why he’s mad, plus he might not live for much longer so might feel like he has to do something to fix this mess. One just has to look at what removing small characters likes Jayne Poole did to the main show. So yeah, removing Maelor basically puts the writers in a corner with Helena’s death. So if the leak is true that she just offs herself for no reason, then I fear we’re in a rough next 2 seasons.

It’s because Ryan and the rest of the writers want the blacks to be the unquestioned hero’s and less black and white like it is in the book, they don’t want Rhaenyra to be bad in anyway
If GRRM wanted a word for word TRANSCRIPTION of his faux history book, he should've put it the contract he signed with HBO. One you sign on the dotted line, what ends up on screen isn't up to you. Book purists were vindicated again,Bittersteel. Just like with Game of Thrones(stupid title, by the way). Muster the Golden Company, we must march against Condal and his troupe of clowns at dawn.
The situation with HBO vs GRRM isn't quite the same as the issue with Disney and Star Wars but god damn it's starting to feel that way now. Instead of being true to the source material and respecting the original stories they just want to make their own stuff which makes no sense. What's the point in creating an adaptation if you just want to change everything? Dan and Dave at least had the "ran out of source material" excuse because seasons 1-4 were for the most part quite great and true enough to the source material, with things beginning to slip after that, but with House of the Dragon all the source material is there for plain to see.
@@Spoogebro Exactly! The problem is that Martin created a compelling, interesting, literary world, albeit an unfinished world, and then sold that world. He sold it to HBO, making them co-creators in that space. ... The time for these types of complaints was years ago, during the original show's descent. By now, he's angrily slamming the barn door shut, long after all the horses are long gone.
This is my issue with George. He wants to eat his cake and have it too. You can’t take the bag and then complain about what they’re doing to your art. He sold out his work, and considering his long history in television he doesn’t even have the excuse of being naive and taken advantage of. I also wish they would do the show better. I wish he would have protected his work better. I wish he would finish the damn books.
I don't understand why people are shocked, as if the the mad king arc for George wasn't building up when he talked about "writers thinking they can do it better than the authors" and about "Maelor The Missing" and how he had been so actively online and reading fans reactions to this. I agree with all of your points. Whatever he wrote was my exact feelings about the writing this season which was weak compared how this show can potentially be great. I totally saw this coming and felt vindicated. This was a very well calculated move on his part. This wasn't some naive moment where he went "oh shit. Gone too far." He had months and months to think about it when he said in his last blogpost (back in July i believe) that he will further discuss blood and cheese and Maelor The Missing. George is a bloody genius and he knew what he was doing.
This video would be much better if his "professionalism" wasn't brought up so often. It's much more unprofessional to destroy someone's work while making your whole product based on that work.
I was thinking that, but i saw someone say that he maybe feels more responsibility for game of thrones as he didn’t finish the books where with HOTD the story is complete, anything different is 100% on the writers
Changing subjects a little, anyone knows where I can get a HD copy of the Westeros map that appears in these video? I’ve been looking for ages now, but haven’t been able to find it anywhere.
I think George is mostly correct. I also think if he'd finished his main series books years ago we wouldnt be in this mess of needing to revive the franchise in the first place. For me this all ultimately falls on George being pretty disrespectful to his fans. And if youre one of those that says he doesnt owe people anything then he should strip himself of any wealth he has gained from it.
He will do anything other than finish the mainline book series. Start TV shows, write for a video game, do another side TV show, write angry blogs, go on talk shows, etc. All of it to waste what little time he has to properly cement his legacy.
Thank you! I feel for his regards of his story but he’s ignoring something that should have been finished a decade ago. I feel like animosity from Hess is because of what happened to Dany. He still hasn’t finished the books and it’s still up in the air. Either say we’re done with this adaptation or finish what you started and stop crying about your feelings. He reminds me of George Lucas. They sold out for billions or millions and get upset because something doesn’t go their way.
We couldn’t get a the proper child actor because it would be a detriment to the budget and overall show, but we can allow Rhenera’s actress to improv lesbian kissing scenes that have no bearing on the plot and was a “spur of the moment,” thing. Oh alright, glad to know where Condalls train of thought is.
The writers have an agenda and that's why the show is the way it is Painting all the women as victims and portraying the men as monsters. rheneys killers alot of small folks when she bursted out from the ground in the dragon pit in season 1 Rhaenyra killing innocent dragon seeds cause she needed new dragon riders. Bit the show keeps painting the blacks as good people and the greens as bad
You're contradicting yourself. You can argue about wether you think it was effective but the fact that the show had these scene of rhaenys and rhaenyra killing small folk is signaling to the viewer these people arent exactly paragons of justice.
@@Spoogebro the bad actions of the female characters had no repercussions, the world seems to bend around rhaenyra and some other characters, always painting them in a good light
It would be funny if the plans for seasons 3 and 4, are for Aemond, and Daemon to replace Daemon and Nettles relationship. Broke back mountain style. In all seriousness, Georges concern probably has something to do with Alicent, and Rhaenyras' story in the future seasons.
I'd be publicly upset too if writers constantly disrespected and changed my work as well. HotD was to be the redemption after the GoT debacle, and Season 2 felt like it was a totally different show. If I was GRRM, I wouldn't play these respectability politics either.
Spoilers for seasons 3 & 4?? Wait, wot?! How in seven hells did GRRM spoil what's already been published in "Fire And Blood" (plus "The World Of Ice And Fire" for that matter) and out in the wild for as long as it has?? The casual HOTD/GOT fans wouldn't be as present or focused on this blog post the same way book fans would be. The spoilers premise for this, now MIA post is rubbish, pure and simple.
Short answer yes I think when you look at it’s hbo there going to do what they want. The mess up things is the story already written all you have to do is follow the blueprint..
I support George 110%. Imagine seeing your magnum opus being destroyed on television and a few years later seeing the same thing happening again? I would be honest too.
First the commentary of this video was so respectful to all sides which I appreciate well done analysis. I agree with George in a lot of aspects b/c it's his world his characters so his word should be taken with more weight than anyone. Compromise is important but Maelor not being in the show is incredibly damaging in so many aspects. I think what has him truly upset is Daemon. Daemon is drastically different in his motivations. Without Nettles how does the battle at the God's Eye play out? Does Alys play the role of Nettles as far as romance maybe? How does that affect Aemonds character then? It's muddy. The solution I offer is to repair it going forward by having Nettles appear in season 3 as the person who has a wild dragon. That could repair that portion. Have the Haelena portion though she has already shown signs of despair when she ways "I was happier when I wasn't Queen." As for my Queen Rhaneyra I don't want to see her get eaten by a dragon, however Aegon the Younger needs to have the traumatic experience in order for Cragen Stark portions to have more emotional weight. Even if the last season deals with the regency of Aegon iii. I see some of this as good b/c dialogue that is constructive is good. To the owner of the channel You are doing an amazing job in your dialogue here that isn't toxic but fair. Kudos again to the channel for being so professional.
George can see the way the winds blowing the show will fail and he’s trying to save it but it’s gonna be disastrous he’s completely in the right this in the end is his story his imagination his life’s work on the line I wish he would’ve went harder cause the book is so in depth and amazing they could’ve easily adapted it but it’s like they’re purposely shooting themselves in the foot idk what’s going on you have the most spectacular source material ever written and instead of just appreciating it and putting it out the right way they’re changing shit that doesn’t need to be changed and it will ruin the entire history of asoiaf on screen
GRRM has been in business for decades, do you guys honestly believe he did not TRY the internal route and ended up chewing on granite before opting to blog post all of this?
I mean I do get it got season 8 was an unmentionable disaster. And HotD 2 was a pretty disappointing season.. and yes George Is just saying what all of has been saying about blood and cheese
I wish George had gone all or nothing. He was probably to release more blogs but now can't, but it's left to everyone else to decide for themselves what George was going to criticise. We got his views on dragons, Maelor, and other "toxic butterflies" that we don't know. I think a lot of people are projecting their criticisms onto what George was saying.
I know nothing about this situation beyond what is said in this video... so all I'll say is this: Sometimes demands for Professionalism are wielded as a way to enforce silence and meekness from anyone opposing you.
You handled this video very well especially with the difficult topic. To be honest I’m thinking the same. Reading the lore from Fire & Blood and the World of ice and Fire Instead of focusing on drama. Not to mention that the books are canonical works While both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are Simply that adaptations Not fully canonical depictions of the events. I just hope you and your channel do alright right in this difficult time. Like you said this whole thing is a mess regardless of one different take on it!
Yeah. I just thought she was the weird sister who liked bugs, but it turned out somewhere in there she married her brother, became queen, and had some kids.
I think they did it just to minimise the impact of blood and cheese and make blacks look better, because show Heleana had little to no reaction with it all, didn’t offer her own life, didn’t plead at all, and got over it very quick, even talking to Daemon in his dream with no dislike, isn’t mentally broken, and says all kids die so why be sad.Meanwhile, book Heleana pleaded for her kids life offering herself up, was forced to choose which son died, had her eldest son beheaded in front of her while her other son who she named to die lived but with the knowledge she chose him to die, was found screaming holding the headless body of Jaeharys, was left mentally broken by the experience and was unable to look at Maelor out of guilt that she chose him to die, and the loss of her children drove her to suicide.
I agree with everything said in this hut trying to see from the other side as well, George does leave little things in his long history not directly detailed exposition that could simply not be left in the show, like nobody know king who poisoned Aegon II would just not work in show and cause outrage if it worked out the same way as in the story, some characters just round the corner, and one of and the only remaining main original antagonist/protagonist just mysteriously dead on the floor and never explored any further, if you were only a show watcher that would drive you insane and seem so purposefully lazy, it makes perfect sense in the books as the whole thing is told from the perspective of an unreliable only partially affiliated dwarf or a scholar recounting it many decades after it happened but in the view of pov characters right then right there what are you to do but invent and make up what happened yourself and for that to not seem like a deus ex machina plot device you’d have to have some lead up to it so multiple scenes and scenarios over not just a few episodes bunch maybe even multiple seasons to have the proper pay off. Before any one gets their feathers ruffled I am 1000% pro books and anything grrm wants said or done with his story, I’m just trying to possibly see a bit of the other sides problems as well
Any changes George doesn't agree with should be thrown out instantly like concept art he doesn't like. Viserys was improved; so was Alicent. He really like Viserys and Alicent being Rheanyra's childhood friend helped her character a lot. changes are great if George approves them and thinks they can make the show better.
I'm for him standing on business, and wanting the image and "story" to work for the show and continuity. He's stood by those two people he works with, that have said a slew of things that are beyond troubling, and are overwhelmingly, bad at writing, see the cash grab of "The Rise of the Dragon" and it being a picture book with writing clearly not done by GRRM, and being wholeheartedly bad. But if you want to do that, dont delete the post, let it stand, and stand by your words, because it looks, although valid, like you didnt want to post it. Why write and pour all that effort into it, to not keep it up, consequences be damned. Additionally, if you're that feverish about the show, FUCKING FINISH THE BOOKS, so everyone knows what the end is. FINISH THE DUNK AND EGG stories! Polish the entirety of the continuity with more short stories within the Fire and Blood as full on books or longer short stories written as stories with POVs, but not fucking "Histories", because a lot can be cleaned up.
The world's most expensive soap opera. The story goes no where. No one wins. They just combine the two sides. It's all a waste of time. How can anyone really like this? It's like nerds have really brainwashed people into thinking they seem clever if they like nerdy things, but really it just ruins the overall perception of what is good. This is the Young and the Restless with armor, dragons, and castles.
As a book fan myself I understand what he’s saying. I’ve had a few wtf moments over HOTD but also keep in mind, the books/lore is all second & third hand tellings of the stories so I justify the differences with that. As if the show is what actually happened (for good or bad) that might be part of what’s annoying him too. Either way GRRM is a legend.
People keep forgetting that "Television" is not always a medium to express art, it's also a return-on-investment facility. Executives need to worry about viewership; that means casting as wide a net as possible. That means, in some circumstances, dumbing things down so the lowest common denominator can participate. Somewhere along the way they made the decision to cut some things out and insert other things that they feel would appeal to their audience. And it is THEIR audience; book readers do not necessarily coincide with TV watchers exactly. Things that someone who read the books cover-to-cover may pick up on and track from one book to another, a person who only watches the show wouldn't even notice or may actively ignore.
I agree with you but I’ll add this, casuals aren’t coming back to rewatch ASOIAF content unless it’s new and trending AT THE MOMENT. The high viewership that GoT still has is from the grassroots fans so maybe corporations should think long term instead of short term, it’s the reason so many people rewatch avatar the last airbender decades after its release, hotd ended a month + ago and I’ve rewatched GoT season 1-4 TWICE since then and I had no urge to watch HOTD because it simply isn’t on par in terms of WRITING quality. It’s like Bronn said “ if you worry about being the most liked, you’ll end up the most popular dead man in town”
@@youngveteran6368 about your argument about fans, book fans and fans of the show(not just tv viewers) are different people, in this case the latter have more numbers
I think George was absolutely right, the show might be on HBO but its still his IP and heavily tied to his legacy. If studios don't like authors/creators complaining about adaptations of their work then either go back to hiring talented creative people to make new oringinal stories instead of hiring based on which boxes they tick. Or stop bastardising the works other people are putting time (decades in this case) and effort into. I'd be getting pissed too if I was George, he wrote an extremely beloved series of books that turned into one of the best shows theres ever been only to have the last couple of seasons but especially the final season butchered by writers who by the looks of it lost interest (had their heads turned by disney) but were to egotistical to pass the show to other writers. Then he probably thought HOTD would be redemption for the franchise only for the studio to start cutting budgets and the writers starting to change things that have implications to the wider story.
Honestly even the actors were feeling the long run of GoT , because actors while they do what they wished for they also want a catalog of roles that vary beyond one character (I’m not absolving D&D for their incompetence)
I honestly do not understand how people think grrm owes them his creative process. he'll finish winds whenever he finishes it. if he wants a 15-year break from it to indulge in another creative form in tv adaptation, he has every goddam right to. it's not like him not working in tv means he'll write winds. that's not how creative process works. you don't substitute one for another.
One min he is pleased with the season and praising Condal's vision then the next he has other things to say and makes this blog post. I'm pretty indifferent to GRRM.
IMO hes been pretty consistent. before season 2 aired he made a post with remarks about how writers adapt stories. Hes always praised phia seban and the way halaena is portrayed barring blood and cheese.

I completely agree with you.

The child actor excuse is so lame. They could've done it the way the blood&cheese in the GOT lore animated video was edited, no gore, no beheading, no blood but it still kept the integrity of the scene.

From now on it’s “Condom & Mess” not Hess
It started in the first episode when they aged Rhaenyra up and aged Alicent down, when they clearly had no plan for how it would affect the story. At this point that was a huge colossal waste of time.
Xiran did imply some of his rants was about Rhaenyra and Alicent. The reason might be any criticism of their relationship may be interpreted as criticism of Emma and Olivia, and given Martin allegedly misgendered Emma before, he might not want to give fans the impression that he's queerphobic, especially in a fight where he wants them to be on his side.

I truly hope Alicent is not responsible for poisoning Aegon. Have they not ruined her character enough
Took the weight of the situation right out of it. Adapt the story without the story.😑
Honestly... while I can understand GRRM's frustration to an extent, I'm not on his side in this.
I was so proud of his blog post!
Hopefully his blog has had an impact in the writing room for s3

@@Spoogebro could someone explain why people are so eager to watch Daemon groom another teenage girl?
Condal and co. and make all the changes they want, that's ok. What's disrespectful and baffling is their decision to somehow paint their version as "what really happened"
@@Spoogebro I think y’all give rhaena FAR TOO MUCH VALUE ON HER ROLE IN THE STORY. Jeyne Arryn (the head lord of the vale)swore to fight for rhaenyra long before rhaena arrived😐 hell she even said “in this world of men us women must stand together” AND THATS BEFORE RHAENA😐 what a lot of people don’t like to admit is that beside being the last targ with a dragon is her only contribution in the dance
The vale didn’t march because rhaena endured them to rhae rhae cause, they came because it takes a while to gather armies and the dance was a rather short conflict so by the time they came the war was damn near over because IT TAKES TIME TO MOBILIZE TROOPS not because rhaena convinced them to remain loyal to a oath there were already intent on carry out………………….

No, after what happened to GoT, he knew what they would do, and he's been more involved with this series.

Dan and Dave at least had the "ran out of source material" excuse because seasons 1-4 were for the most part quite great and true enough to the source material, with things beginning to slip after that, but with House of the Dragon all the source material is there for plain to see.
they had plenty of source material left to adapt and they also had the guy just waiting for them to ask for input despite leaving the writing room.
@@Spoogebro
Exactly!
That 'ran out of source material' BS is the sop thrown to the casuals, to accept the garbage choices that were made -- they *didn't* 'run out', they poorly adapted what they had - Dumbarse & Dipsh^t cut out as much magical stuff as they could get away with, they cut characters & plotlines down to the point of near-incongruousness - they wrecked the Dornish setting, wasted the Vale, the Citadel, Meereen - & that's not even starting on the characters' changes- which people more articulate than me have covered...
The problem is that Martin created a compelling, interesting, literary world, albeit an unfinished world, and then sold that world. He sold it to HBO, making them co-creators in that space.

The writers have an agenda and that's why the show is the way it is
Painting all the women as victims and portraying the men as monsters.
rheneys killers alot of small folks when she bursted out from the ground in the dragon pit in season 1
Rhaenyra killing innocent dragon seeds cause she needed new dragon riders.

Was looking forward to you doing this you're my absolute favorite ASOIAF creator and always give fair and balanced takes.

I'm getting SO tired of this stupidity.
So does this mean Maelor is completely cut from the show, like he's not going to be introduced at all?
yes, the show writers deeply sh1t the bad in S2

I liked season 2 but the omission of nettles was in my opinion a mistake.
I actually think that's the smart call. Nettles already sounds too YA for this franchise, and we don't need another gross romance.
It's also really funny bc now the S1 intro that shows Aegon and Helena have three kids is blatantly incorrect.

Very well said, at least we still have the books.
I'm with Martin
As a book fan myself I understand what he’s saying. I’ve had a few wtf moments over HOTD but also keep in mind, the books/lore is all second & third hand tellings of the stories so I justify the differences with that. As if the show is what actually happened (for good or bad) that might be part of what’s annoying him too. Either way GRRM is a legend.
No more: the show is canon and the book is maester propaganda ❤
Need to fix captions
George should move his franchise to netflix or amazon since hbo is cutting budgets
A Wokeflix or modernamazon adaptation would be where I officially say F..k ASOIAF series

@@youngveteran6368 about your argument about fans, book fans and fans of the show(not just tv viewers) are different people, in this case the latter have more numbers
HOTD is just FAN FICTION.
