Looks good. Just a tip. Put your hotdogs on a wooden skewer stick and then pour your batter into a tall glass. Then all you have to do is dip the hotdogs down into the glass to batter them.
The New Zealand Family made them using this method a couple of years ago - back when they could be bothered to make videos of actually doing things.
@@CCoburn3 They still make videos of them doing things. They just came to the US and did a whole RV tour. They've been posting the videos from that. I like watching their reactions to new things in a new country.
Good suggestion
@@ChristinaSheets It’s more interesting than their video reactions. But I liked the videos where they would do things together. Like when they cooked a Thanksgiving dinner. Or made corndogs. But I think they have stopped that sort of thing. But maybe they just paused for a while.
@@CCoburn3 I'm sure they will do those type things again soon.
Your mum is just amazing. She reminds me of my mum when I was young. I love her enthusiasm. I'm sure the corn dog was fabulous too. Please ell her how much we enjoy watching her cook and taste the food.
Good job! Some tips:
*1. Whisk 1 egg in with milk until well blended (will help batter stick better).
*2. Need to use CORN MEAL, instead of corn flour which may be why batter was too thin making it harder for batter to stick on hot dog.
*3. If you can't get corn meal & have to use corn flour, instead of adding all milk-egg mixture in at one time, put in 3/4 of milk-egg mixture & then gradually add rest little by little until batter has consistency like thick pancake batter. (May not need to use entire amount of milk-egg mixture.)
*4. Use whisk to reduce number of lumps.
*5. Use paper towel to pat outside of hotdog to ensure it is completely dry.
*6. Easiest way to coat hotdog with batter is to insert wooden stick into center of hotdog, put batter into a tall glass, dip hotdog in & out of glass 2 or 3 times.
And don’t use hotdogs from a can or jar.
It's the effort that counts.
Cornmeal absolutely. Th good kind. Well I mean I make my own but
With a little honey In the cornmeal.
Whaaaaat? Oh no!
What would help is....use wooden skewer sticks in the hot dogs so when you place them in the hot oil you give them a twirl, will keep the batter even. Also gives you a safe way to put them in the oil and remove them. You can make the batter a little thicker too. I love that you are doing this. Good job. First time I made my own corndogs, I was amazed they were good.
Those look delicious. She did a fantastic job making them.
Yeah, I love these videos! One tip: if something calls for a "cup" of something, it is probably best to use a measuring cup, just to get the perfect amount.
yeah, depending on what it is, a mis-measure on things can be as little an issue as just being too dry/wet, or as devastating as too sweet or even worse unbalancing the rest of the mix which is basically impossible to fix down the road.
Flour (wheat or corn) usually isn't that bad some types of flour need specific measurements because of the lack of gluten in them.
Yeah. One cup is 237 ml
She did use a measuring cup when she poured the milk in. It was a white one. Rewatch it carefully and you’ll see.
Cool. More of this, please.
I think you did very well for your first attempt. Just a tip or 2...put the hot dogs on wooden skewers or sticks to get a more even coating of the batter on them. And then fry a little bit longer...til they are a nice brown color. Again, great job!
It is great that you enjoyed American food so much that your "mum" is trying to make it at home. For selfish reasons, I would love to see her through some traditional food or meals you eat so we can try to make them at home.
I believe I saw your video of you trying a corndog in the US. I'm amazed you went home and tried it yourself. Great job! Corndogs are available in every grocery store's frozen food section, and they're good, too.
My only thought is that it should probably use corn meal not corn flour for batter
I was thinking the same.....hence "corn" dog! 😂
Yes, my understanding is corn flour is what we call corn starch. Very different flavor than corn meal. It might be an ingredient that is only available through Amazon or international store.
James' mom is absolutely adorable!! The food looks delicious. Please do more content like this!🩷
The good news is Brit’s already eat and make battered sausages so just do that method but with cornmeal and you can’t go wrong.
That was tactful and good advice as well.
You're ambitious! I've never known anyone who made their corn dogs from scratch. Around here, everyone gets theirs at Sonic, or if they do have them at home, they buy them frozen like I do. State Fair is a popular brand.
I make them here all the time as used to make them at the fair and they are so easy.
@@luelladiaz109agreed, they’re so easy to make
Ideally you use a cornbread box mix or cornmeal.
When you can cook like that and make a video at the same time.Good enough for me looks good!
Mom needs American measuring cups and measuring spoons and equipment ( whisk, pie pan, etc).
Christmas is coming, James & Millie!
Couple tips on the corn dogs. Use more of your cornmeal. A thicker batter will stick better and help get around the bald spots. Lower it into the oil slowly, give it 10-15 seconds before dropping all the way in. That allows the edge to set a bit and protects it. Also if you put a skewer into the hot dog beforehand, pouring the batter into a tall drinking glass will make battering them easier.
The one thing to do is wipe each hot dog off before dipping in the batter. It will stick to the hot dog better. Also using a stick or skewer to dip it in batter so you dont make a mess of yourself!!!! Can't wait to see what else mom makes!!!!!
That looks delicious. She did a good job. Good to see you guys again. Been on vacation for a while. I hope you guys are doing well and may god bless all three of you ❤
Really good job, but you need skewers for the corn dog to stay battered. Here is a video showing how, I bet yours still tasted spot on😊😊😊😊

Just a tip: after you mix your batter, pour it in a very tall glass and then stand your hot dog upright in the glass. It makes it easier to coat them. Also, if you put a little cornstarch on the hotdog first, them batter will stick better. But that was outstanding for your first attempt!! Great video!!!
You need to put the hot dogs on a stick before you dip them into the batter.
I agree but really good first try.
I love how the British don’t usually have measuring cups or spoons. And the ones who get them from the US don’t know how to use them. (It comes from using weight to measure ingredients.) But most of the time, their recipes come out ok. These corndogs look fine- especially for a first attempt.
Great job practice makes perfect. They look good
Great job, I really hope you do more videos. Also you might wanna add cornmeal/masa (it has two names). The cornmeal is what gives the better its color taste and texture. It’s also why it’s called a corndog.
I’m not big on corn dogs but I do love cheese on a stick. But I do agree, your Mom did a fantastic job making those corn dogs.
My father owned and ran a Corn Dog. He made his own Batter too. I don't know the recipe, but the only thing I remember from it is that he said the trick is to add Sugar. He also used Hotdogs that are from chicken. His stand was on the side of a highway 20 minutes north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. He sold 100's a day. People said they were the best they ever had.
Even a tiny bit of sugar in a recipe helps to get that nice golden brown color.
I love watching your mom try american recipes. One suggestion is to get the correct measuring cups and spoons. It can make a big difference depending on what you cook.
I'm really enjoying your mom's videos! More would be great! 😊
Great first attempt at corn dogs James’s mom (I have forgotten her name)! I would use wooden skewers for less mess during prep and eating.
May I suggest trying peach cobbler next? It’s a fabulous dessert.
I give your mum an A+ for effort and another A+ for enthusiasm especially for being brave enough to attempt this in the first place, many of the pervious comments gave excellent advice.
I am impressed!!! Your mom did a great job!
put a stick in the end pour the batter in a tall glass or jar and then dip the hot dog.
Yes use wood skewers to dip n fry longer but great job but we get them at any grocery store frozen lol
Very minor correction: That was French’s mustard, it’s a brand, not French mustard, a type.
Dittos on all the tip suggestions already mentioned. I would like to add one....if you don't have skewers or popsicle sticks, you can make mini corn dogs by cutting the hotdogs in half, thirds, or fourths depending on the size that you want to make. Just batter them, drop them in the hot oil, rotate them with tongs(or forks). Remove them when golden brown and place on paper towels or a cake rack...🤗 I really enjoy the bite-size corn dogs😁
Great reaction, loved the look on everyone's face, Enjoy the content. Please keep em coming.
i didn't own a wisk until i was in my 20's. A dnner fork = kitchen wisk .. it's how i learned to cook.
My Momma cooked for us 10 kids and I didn't have anything fancy, but her hands and a fork. She whipped up many delicious foods. Love From Michigan and it's a beautiful evening ❤❤
Use less liquid to make the batter thicker and it'll make a thicker coat on the dog
We need a mom's cooking channel!
I'm impressed by your mom. I've never made them myself mainly because I don't like them. My husband loves them so I buy them frozen at the store. With all battered and fried foods it takes practice to get the consistency correct. Great first attempt.
I've never known anyone who made their corndogs at home. Way to go! Americans DO NOT make these at home.
Love this! You did a fantastic job. Love these video’s with Mom in them. She seems like an amazing person. Can’t wait to see more.
Heinz would be our major ketchup brand and used almost everywhere. That said, use whatever you like.
I've been enjoying the vids with the moms featured! Your mom is so adorable!
I really liked the video. Good job! I’m pretty sure what is called cornflour in the UK is what Americans would call corn starch. Cornmeal is completely different. Also, cup measuring cups and teaspoon/ tablespoon measuring spoons are a must.
I think you are absolutely amazing to do this. Hope you enjoyed the corn dogs, and I look forward to more cooking videos.
I think it's fantastic that you're willing to try making things that plenty of Americans would rather simply purchase already made. And considering whatever ingredients might be unavailable to you and the substitutions you might have to make (like corn syrup for pecan pie), it's quite impressive!
Install hotdog sticks before throwing them in batter and fryer also very important to get grease hot and clean grease
Way to go mum! Keep the videos coming…👏🏻
It never comes out perfect the first time or the twenty time but the more you do the better they get.
Great job! I am so impressed.. I myself have never even attempted Corn Dogs! ohhhh Peach Cobbler.. yum
Hello, it looks pretty good but you should try Corn Dogs with Corn Meal instead of flour, however, I'm sure they are tasty. Corn Meal is what makes the batter slightly sweet.
"They don't look very nice", huh!? They looked delicious to me. Great job James' Mom! I'd have eaten that whole plate by myself LOL
James put the full cooking videos on RUclips after the patreon time.Your mom will get a lot more information to help you guys. Also get her a mixer.
I knew it was going to be a cuppa'tea LOL....she did pretty damn good.
😊Much respect for your 1st attempt. I ❤ corn dogs but would never attempt at home. I never attempt deep fry foods at home. We are able to buy them at Sonic and Food Trucks locally🇺🇲or in the frozen food section of our grocery stores. Mustard and ketchup is a must on my corn dog. Our corn dog batter is a bit sweet.....so we usually would add a little sugar to the dry ingredients especially for breakfast. My mom did make them for us and I did help. Maple syrup in the batter and breakfast sausages in place of the hot dog.
Brilliant attempt, keep it up. So glad y'all are trying to cook and bake our favorite foods!
Must remember one thing....a "cup" of something.....is not a coffee cup of it! It is a precise unit of measure and you are going to need a "MEASURING CUP" to get your measurements correct, mama. Also, putting that much in that small of a fryer, is going to lower your oil temp really LOW and lengthen your fry time. Great first effort!!!!!!!!
For peach cobbler an easy old southern recipe....(cuppa cuppa cuppa cobbler)...1 cup flour 1 cup milk 1 cup sugar. 1 big can peaches and juice/syrup [ 28 0z] or 2 regular 15 oz cans peaches and syrup and1 stick butter melted. ........pour melted butter in 9 x 13 inch casserole dish. Add the peaches and juice on top. In separate bowl mix sugar milk and flour well. Pour over the peach and butter mixture. DO NOT STIR!!!...BAKE at 350 fo 30 35 min until top is crusty brown and bubbling on sides. Allow to cool down and enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
Substitute buttermilk instead of plain milk
Your Mom is so sweet. Please keep the videos coming.
You want the batter to have the consistency of thick porridge
Another great video! Love to see it! Your mom is great on camera, looking forward to the next one!
They need thicker batter, shorter dogs, sticks for dipping in batter and frying and a slightly longer fry so they are a bit darker.
If batter is too thin to stick on good, refrigerate the batter for about 30 minutes to make it thicker, in a tall drinking glass.
As everyone said use cornmeal and try drying the hotdogs and dusting them with cornstarch to help the batter stick
Great video! Love the effort.
Thank you for the display of our US Flag ,,, we certainly consider you, your son and lovely daughter in law, members of the United States. Your a brilliant chef!!!
2 things, 1 most use wooden scures to make it easier to place in oil. 2 next time take a can of creamed corn, replace about half the liquid with this liquid, some even add bits of corn, but it's your preference. 😃
Something I don't think you've tried yet, but if you like the cornbread flavor, try spoonbread. It's basically the 'warm & comforting breakfast on a cold, winter morning' version of cornbread.
Oh, bless y’all hearts..
It should be corn meal... Isn't corn flour what we Americans call corn starch?
My mom used cornbread mix
Right but our corn flour is masa.
possibly but then in the UK corn meal might be call corn flour, names can be so different in either country also within each country too
You are right. In the UK Corn Flour IS what we call Corn Starch.
Archie sounds excited.
I absolutely love these videos. Please keep them coming. BTW, that was an awesome shirt. I need to find one for my sister.
Not too bad for a first attempt! I think she did a great job 👏🏻
I think they look fabulous! You did great, especially for your first try. Kudos to you for at least trying to make things you tasted while visiting the US.
You need corn meal in the batter and your batter needs to be thicker. I would have cut your hot dogs/sausages in half and skewered them. To coat the hot dogs in batter, add about a cup of batter in a tall glass and dip your skewered dog/sausage in that.
Glad to see your mom has embraced American foods!!
Buttermilk Biscuits
Ingredients:
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the board
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup buttermilk (approx)
Directions:
1 Preheat your oven to 450°F.
2 Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl, or in the bowl of a food processor.
3 Cut the butter into chunks and cut into the flour until it resembles course meal.
4 If using a food processor, just pulse a few times until this consistency is achieved.
5 Add the buttermilk and mix JUST until combined.
6 If it appears on the dry side, add a bit more buttermilk. It should be very wet.
7 Turn the dough out onto a floured board.
8 Gently, gently PAT (do NOT roll with a rolling pin) the dough out until it's about 1/2" thick. Fold the dough about 5 times, gently press the dough down to a 1 inch thick.
9 Use a round cutter to cut into rounds.
10 You can gently knead the scraps together and make a few more, but they will not be anywhere near as good as the first ones.
11 Place the biscuits on a cookie sheet- if you like soft sides, put them touching each other.
12 If you like"crusty" sides, put them about 1 inch apart- these will not rise as high as the biscuits put close together.
13 Bake for about 10-12 minutes- the biscuits will be a beautiful light golden brown on top and bottom.
14 Do not overbake.
15 Note: The key to real biscuits is not in the ingredients, but in the handling of the dough.
16 The dough must be handled as little as possible or you will have tough biscuits.
17 I have found that a food processor produces superior biscuits, because the ingredients stay colder and there's less chance of overmixing.
18 You also must pat the dough out with your hands, lightly.
19 Rolling with a rolling pin is a guaranteed way to overstimulate the gluten, resulting in a tougher biscuit.
20 Note 2: You can make these biscuits, cut them, put them on cookie sheets and freeze them for up to a month.
21 When you want fresh biscuits, simply place them frozen on the cookie sheet and bake at 450°F for about 20 minutes.
Yep Momma's a natural. She could do her own cooking show. But yeah she needs wooden sticks and she could have cut those franks in half and made twice as many. But she gave it a hellava try. Way to go! Momma!
You need a wooden stick in a corn dog. If u want a proper "corn dog," u absolutely have to try a Pronto Pup at the MN state fair (at the end of August).
Having said that, Vicki is such an amazing addition to the channel, and I'm here for all the American classics she makes.
I would love to see her make a bowl of chili. You would top it with sour cream and cheddar cheese. And I know Millie and James have no tolerance for heat, but u would also top it with raw onions and jalapeños. Then, have corn bread or Saltines on the side.
I have made them before. My recip😢 uses cornmeal. The batter sticks better I you dry off the hotdog and roll it in corn flour. Your batter will stick.
Thicker batter and dry the sausage off. But well done mum. It took me 3 years to get pizza dough figured out. You got this.
If you want a really good peach cobbler in Alabama we make what is called a poor man’s cobbler. It’s a cup of milk cup of sugar cup a cup of self rising flour and one stick of butter which 4oz melt the butter in your baking dish. Mix the milk, flour, and sugar together in a separate bowl, once the butter is melted pour on top of the batter. Do not mix then take your peaches that have been sliced and peeled or canned dump them in the pan that you melted the butter in. If the peaches are canned drain one can leave the juice from one can then pour the batter on top again do not mix. Bake at 350° until golden Brown about five minutes before you bring it out a little bit of sugar I like dusting over the top place it back in the oven for the last five minutes just to caramelize slightly, then sitting on the counter to cool slightly, and you can serve it with ice cream or even Cool Whip or whipped cream, whichever you prefer my family personally prefers to put a little more butter on top and let it melt. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think. Thanks.
Batter should be alittle bit thicker and you have a stick in them to put in a glass with the batter to move around and coat.
The batter should be thicker. It should drop by the spoonful when you do the spoon test. Also you only need a 1/2 cup of flour to 1 cup of corn meal and one egg . then you add the milk by the tablespoon full until you reach a consistency that doesn't pour off of the spoon to easily.
Ok, A for effort.
Just by looking, i bet they tasty. With mustard only.
Good job mum!
Homemade not matter how it looks is ALWAYS the best tasting!!!
Just some generic info here.. In the US they like to dispute about not putting ketchup on your hotdog which is complete nonsense its nothing more than friendly arguments that some have, in reality load your hotdog with as much ingredients of your taste that you like.
That said this does not apply to corndogs as they don't have a bun
James and Millie need to get mom some measuring cups and spoons, so it's easier for her to do US measurements. I would suggest to cut your hot dogs in half, since they are much longer than ones in the US. Also as someone else suggested use a skewer.
I have never made them, but love them. Also great gas station travel food.
Awesome first attempt! Sure, there may be room for improvement but y'all seemed to enjoy your finished product which is the most important part! As others have said, wooden skewers inserted in the hotdogs makes battering and eating a little easier. A thicker batter will help your finished product have a more even and thicker coating. And, pouring the batter into a tall glass will make dipping the skewered hotdogs into the batter a whole lot easier. Also, make sure your hotdogs are completely dry before you batter them, this will help the batter stick to the hotdog better.
Well done love! And they looked amazing
Good job! Corn dogs are a pain in the butt to make. Please let your mum know that using a fork is perfectly fine. I can't wait to see more!
I think you've stumbled upon a great idea with your mum cooking American food. And while I've never personally made my own corn dogs from scratch, generally they are fried in a deep vat of oil.
You could start selling these in Jersey! The kids and adults would love them!! ❤
Do they sell corn meal in the UK? That was the only thing missing, besides the wooden skewer.
I don’t think they do.
