It's their greatest album, period. And definitely the greatest double album in history. Zeppelin is the greatest rock band in history, in my opinion. Keep up these great videos. I never miss one.
So glad you mentioned Custard Pie as one of your favourites Led Zeppelin tracks. Over the years i have received quizzical looks when i claim this is my favourite Zep track. Can't defend my decision but i'm a sucker for the clavinet and i think this track is so overlooked when people discuss the band's music. Great video Michael!!
Yeah, back in the day, and even now, "Physical Graffiti" is indeed the greatest double album in rock n roll. It was Zeppelin at their very best. I must have played the album thousands of times.
There has been a number of great double albums during the classic rock era and Physical Graffiti is one of them. Bottom line for me is a great double album has to have one important thing that makes a great one is that the second disk has to be as good as the first disk. Both albums have to be equally as good.
I have trouble attaching “greatest” to very many music discussions ... greatest guitarist, greatest drummer, greatest vocalist. I tend to “group” my greatest’s. So in that spirit, I will say Physical Graffiti is the greatest along with The Beatles White Album and Todd Rundgren’s Something/Anything. Just one man’s opinion.
Is it the greatest double album? I really can't say. It depends on my mood. It's in my top 4 of my all-time favorite albums and my all-time favorite Led Zeppelin album.
Only reason I don't compare the White album and PG is the beatles had 2 years since their last live performance and Zeppelin had completed their 73 tour and the exhaustion had JPJ entertaining the thought of quitting. The Beatles had all the time on their hands to create something and in average their song's were 3 minutes. 30 songs total, Zeppelin had 15 songs . I like them both for what they represented to each band. Just my thoughts.
Interesting points...I like the White Album for what it is too, loved it since I was a teenager, and I couldn't give a monkeys about all the discussions about whether they should have made it a single album; to quote Paul McCartney "It's the bloody Beatles White Album!"
White album full of duds man , some great tunes , but quite a few that should just have been cut .., if they cut the duds , could have been a solid single album
@@ianmansfield68 , not sure how I missed the point sorry .., I think as a double album , it is not great , had the Beatles cut many that were duds , it could maybe have been a good album .., that is all
Through out "my Zeppelin years"(50+/-) depending on seasons, nostalgia, sentimental or moods in general. Out of their 9 albums, any one from 7 of those albums has been my "favorite" for a time period. The same holds true with any one Led Zeppelin song, from day to day, month to month, favorites change. To qoute a Neal Peart lyric... "Changes Aren't Permanent But Change Is" I love, love, love that line, so true.❤
For me, PG is a good listen. I would put "The Beatles", "Exile on Main ST.", " Blonde on Blonde" "The Byrds (Untitled)", and "The Beach Boys in Concert" as great double albums 😊
This is a good, thoughtful review. I pretty much feel the same way about the songs that you do, though I always liked "Boogie With Stu." I also thought (at first, as a teenager, when I first heard it) "Down By the Seaside" was a tongue-in-cheek, "Hey, we're a hard rock band, so let's play like we're something else and do something super sweet and mellow." Then I realized that there was more to it than that. When it picks up speed, and Jimmy does his solo, it becomes cool again. I always liked songs like "Ten Years Gone" and "Night Flight."
The White Album by the Beatles, with Pink Floyd's The Wall, The WHO's Quadrophenia , Jimi Hendrix Electric Lady Land and of course Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti are ALL my #1 favorite double studio albums. I love them equally and can not do without any of them in my life. Amongst the best albums ever!
Love this album!!! Michael, I know different album, but just now as I watched your video, "Ramble On" came on my radio station! 105.7 Classic Rock. Hope all is well brother! Peace and Love always! ☮♥
Thanks Michael for finally doing a Story/Review of my FAVORITE ALBUM!! One can only wonder what the Album: Houses of the Holy would've sounded like had: Houses of the Holy & The Rover had been used instead of The Crunge & D'Yer Maker??
Graffiti brought back Memories of their Live Show I was at on 6th Feb, 1975 in Montreal Canada; It was Released 2 weeks later & upon hearing It, I said: "Yeah! The Really were That Good Live"
The fact that it uses leftover tracks from the IV and Houses of the Holy sessions (even III with Bron-Yr-Aur) is kind of cheating, so I wouldn't place it at first place, no matter how great the album is. On the other hand, the White Album, the Wall, Exile on Main Street and Quadrophenia present brand new material of the band at that time and are stronger contenders for the greatest double album.
One of my favs as well, but I do wonder what it would be like if they cut it down to the serious classics on there like, in my time of Dying, Trampled, Ten Years Gone, In the Light, Kasmir, THAT lp could be arrested for assault... PS the live versions of all these songs were insane, can be seen on the DVD in 75 and 79
Of course it is, Michael. You & I know it. But Beatles, Stones & Who fans don't. Haha for them.😅😅😊. Led Zeppelin's first 6 LP's were on the Billboard Top 100 chart at the same time. Of course, PG was the 6th. So the rest were on there for a long time. The next closest to that was the Beatles with 3. I play every song on PG on my 🎸 everyday for practice and warm up. ARP synthesizers were polyphonic when MOOG's were not. Way better keyboard. Thanx, Michael. LedHed Pb 207.20 🎶 🎸 🎹
Physical Graffiti my favorite Zeppelin album and favorite album by any artist. I don't even have to think about that, it's as automatic as breathing. Basically my "go to" album whenever I want to listen to them. One of the first 3 albums I ever bought in 4th grade 1976. A school classmate was playing 'Kashmir' on his older brother's cassette player which I never heard before and I asked him "who IS this??" That was how I first learned who the band was. I recall soon thereafter riding my bike down to the record store to buy the record which I still have. Back then 3 records cost less than $20 with enough left over to buy food. Those were the days..
It's up there but to call Physical Graffiti >The Beatles(The White Album) or Pink Floyd's The Wall? I don't know if I can say that. Physical Graffiti, as excellent an album as it was really only had one good disc on it as the second one was all outtakes and some songs both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have both said would never have made it onto other albums as they weren't really up to Zep's standards. I'm not a fan of "In The Light" and "Sick Again" as both really don't(for me, at least) measure up to Led Zeppelin's best work. But, oh, most definitely, the 1st record on Physical Graffiti is a true classic-a giant if you will.
my top double album of all time. and also my favorite zeppelin album. a few notable runner ups as you mentioned The Beatles white album, Stones exile on main st. Chicago's CTA. George Harrison's all things must pass, a triple album but I considerate it a double, the 3rd is just the apple jams not a legitimate album.
It is definitely better than The Wall, and far better than Exile on Main Street. Physical Graffiti and III are my favorite Zep albums. But I can’t put it ahead of The White Album. Does PG have less filler than WA…absolutely. But that filler, in a strange way, is part of the White Albums bombastic charm. Special mention to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…Love Lies Bleeding is epic!
Boogie with Stu was an important song on a compilation tape I made back in the day. Loved it. Nowadays, I gravitate towards sides 3 an 4, which are full of under-played gems.
Physical graffiti is a great single album padded with rejects from other albums. That’s a fact. I prefer the white album, Tommy and goodbye yellow brick road.
I have never even heard this album from start to finish. Kashmir is so often played on the classic radio I'm sick of it and often turn it off when it comes on. I have grown to dislike it. L.Z. is not a favorite Band for me. I own 1, 2 , 4 & Houses of the Holy. I rarely listen to them. I listen to classic rock radio for variety. I don’t have any streaming services. But i guess i need to listen to Physical Graffiti some time.
I listen to the whole album today on RUclips. Like any new album to you, I think I need to listen a few more times before I make a final judgment. I recognized 3 songs that get regular play on classic rock stations.
In my opinion LZ has never put out a consistently great album. Side 3 of PhysGraf is amazing, but I just don't get Kashmir... I still hear it on the radio way too much, to me it doesn't seem to go anywhere. I think my problem is there is drone without guitar.. If JP put a great solo or solos in this it would be incredible. Greatest double album to me is Amon Duul 2 "Dance of the Lemmings", or "Yeti".
Greatest or best? (which is subjective). Its a very good album I think the wall, quadrophenia and the white album have it beaten in the greatest stakes. Personally rank PG and the wall as my best, but no i dont think PG is as GREAT(ie, influence, impact etc) as the other 3. Ive also come to the conclusion that i dont even like the white album anymore but its definitely greater than PG.
Never got into this one. Kashmir is a drone with lyrics too far in the mix to be intelligible and I'm a lyrics guy. I do love In My Time of Dying and Ten Years Gone. Then again, my favorite 2 record album of the 70s is Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes, so what is my opinion worth?
PG is a great album but the sound quality is subpar although I haven't heard the most recent remastering. If anyone has the latest remastered version please tell me if there's much difference between it and the first early 90s remastering?
Great review, lotta fun, makes me want to hear the album fresh. Quadrophenia is still the greatest double album of 70s rock to me, but each of these choices are subjective, which makes it cool.

No. It's not. _The White Album, The Wall_ and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are all better in my book. So are many double live albums. I like _The Song Remains The Same_ better. Bands other than Led Zeppelin can be the greatest sometimes. It doesn't need to be all Zeppelin all the time.
The Wall makes me want to take anti-depressants, Yellow Brick Road as a full album doesn’t hold a candle and the White Album-for me anyway- lacks in comparison to Abbey Rd, Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be… Physical Graffiti for the win!!

Pretty sure Kashmir brought world music to the masses back then imo. Later, Gabriel and others would caravan culturally as well.
When evaluating double albums for #1, i assume greatest hits albums don't make the criteria?
You have me thinking about THE best double album.
Physical Graffiti is the greatest Zeppelin album and one of the greatest albums in history.
its a fantastic album, several MONSTER tracks on it
My favorite Zep album, my favorite group. Fortunate to see them live when this album came out at the old Checkerdome in St. Louis '75.

No, it's Quadrophenia by the Who.
PG made me the absolute LZ fan in my mid teeny years.
I've always loved side 3. Not sure why.
