wow, that wide-angle footage is incredible. completely changes the 'feel' of the shots. makes these lost days feel that much more recent. gonna have to buy this for sure
The S-2 was the only 6-8-6 ever produced. She was intended to be a 4-8-4, but, wartime restrictions prevented the Pennsy from getting her as they wanted. Had she been built as intended, she would have been a class R-2 as class R-1 belonged to the only 4-8-4 electric motor.
Wow actual footage of the only S2 Turbine that used to exist. Man I've been so interested in turbines. I have Lionel 681 turbine so it's pretty awesome to see some real footage. 1:59
I would get this just for the Pittsburgh scenes. So much of the PRR is available but so little in Pittsburgh. The bridge the cameraman was on is still there, hasn't been replaced. The yard is now full of buildings and parking lots, and with just the main line the only piece of railroad left.
I remember George showing his films when I was a kid in the 80's and him telling the stories about the film's during the show. That was neat. Especially him talking about those pacing scenes and how crazy fast he had to drive to keep up and how dangerous it was. Those cars nor the roads at that time were meant for that as he would say. It was scary alot of times! He sure got some great footage!
Excellent footage from George's collection of films. I was lucky enough to have seen George's stuff at public viewings he did in the area back in the 1980's. I do know the E6s pacing shots along Rte 724 was longer (you even saw inside his car for a second) and some other missing shots. However it's still good stuff don't miss out! Waiting now for a DVD of just George's PRR stuff he had a lot of films.
PRR is one very interesting railroad. They had many different steam locomotives and always experimented with unusual designs such as the duplexes, always going with a rigid frame while many others went with articulateds. Such a shame that a railroad like that has merged with their biggest rival, the NYC, and the newly formed Penn Central went bankrupt in a short time.
It's amazing we maintained so many steam locomotive in operation at one time. Now it's an enormous task to operate just one. How did we let it all slip away?
We didn't. The cost of labor nearly doubled post-WWII, and thus these labor intensive monsters gave way to the diesels that needed much less in the way of maintenance and operation personnel. It's a simple sad truth of economics. The amount of labor to do a steam locomotive now only seems like more; it's an illusion caused by the often volunteer nature of the work and having to source parts that are no longer readily available.
@kevin Simala problem with the steam turbine locomotives is that the steam turbine locos break down more often and the turbines were fragile and broke often. Diesels seemed to be better. Steam is just harder to maintain. But then again, steam locos are somewhat good at hauling cars
Pennsy's steam turbines had reciprocating side rods which pounded the track despite the wheel counterweights. As for turbines, they're only efficient at full speed, and RR locos operate at a variety of speeds.
I lived Five Blocks away from Two Englewood Train Station. Both where on 63rd. St.The Main One was between State St. On the East and Wenthwort St.in Chicago,Illinios. The second one on 63rd. St and Wallace St. From 1945 - 1956
The station listed as Akron Ohio is incorrect that is Canton Ohio and that is the Pennsy Fort Wayne main line I spent many mornings with my grandfather railfan on those platforms in the early 1960s
Watching the engineers gunning the 4-4-2s looked like fun and good driving, but watching the engineers gunning the 2-8-0s and not immediately derailing looked like a real treat.
Hey I see E-6 atlantics are in this footage! Seeing that this is just a preview, would the entire DVD have any footage of E-6 atlantic #460? That was the engine that raced a plane to New York. I am looking for footage of that particular locomotive. The E-6 alantics I saw in the preview were NOT the famous 460.
These are PREVIEWS of DVDs that we SELL. We do NOT allow the shows to be downloaded. In fact, we have had several people who have posted our videos without permission removed from You Tube. You can purchase our videos from our web site or one of our approved vendors.
@@herronrailvideo1169 that’s a shame, but it’s cool to see there SOMETHING preserved from that train, it seems like the Pennsylvania was ashamed of it, hence why there’s no films of it around.
Is there any footage of the 0-6-0 you have pictured as your cover shot? I'm also looking for any footage of any A5S 0-4-0's. I have several brass models of these and would like video footage of them. If you have anything, let me know, I'm interested. Thanks.
now when they have a steam excursion there is always a diesel near the front, most roads do that now for the dynamic braking, but in the steam days they did not have dynamic brakes and they moved the trains down the hills, ie retainers set. also heard that brakemen had to ride on the car tops going down the mountain, must have been a real bitch at 10 below zero.
It’s amazing to see freight cars with not a speck of spray paint on them, great clips!

Yes, Danny Harmon is the narrator.

I actually have a possible date because my grandma used to ride on the Pennsy, it was ether 1948, or 1947 when my grandma was young

@ 4:52 the GG1 winked at me???
OH MY GOD YOUR RIGHT
It’s just the shadow cast over from the electric lines above that make it look like that
6:00 Trainz origin whistle
Nope. That is a PRR "Banshee" freight engine whistle.
For a sec I thought the Sandlot director narrated this 🤣
The station listed as Akron Ohio is incorrect that is Canton Ohio and that is the Pennsy Fort Wayne main line I spent many mornings with my grandfather railfan on those platforms in the early 1960s
I am interested of this RUclips channel that you did
Awesome. Thank you
Incredible footage the s 2 turbine and k 4 1188 to amazing and rare catches
Wow, the crew of that H9 had her clipping right along!
b3j8 They had 62 inch drivers, wouldn't be surprised if they could do close to 65mph.

Bad Ass trains
What is the 1950s cocktail lounge jazz in the first 15 seconds of this video?
Does this film only have the one clip of the S2? Or is there more?
Just 1, which is the only film of that engine moving that we've found.

Date Unknown u say?
Im guessing 1943.
I was thinking 1944 mostly
It was somewhere between March 1945 (First actual time pulling something on a mainline) and June 1949 (Last trip before scrapping)
Great video! Is this Blu-Ray,or standard with 16x9?

Yes, the 0-6-0 is seen drilling freight cars at the PRR yard in Louisville, Ky circa 1952-53.
