@@xivering It's slow not boring. The payoff it brings is pretty good too. A lot of the problems with pacing gets remedied too when you binge the thing. Plus S2 is worth it for John's Character alone and he's not the only one holding it up as the plot is pretty good as well. People tend to see slow stories and shot on it, and while I get it, when a stories too slow patience starts to wear thin but it's not that bad the buildup and payoff for everything is pretty well done. When I first read this, it was really good. That until I rethink about the story, especially where Sera basically gets kidnapped by random kids from her high school.
As I rethink this story, it’s very concerning how everyone will basically beat each other up to the point that they’re close to straight up murdering each other. Just because the other was weaker or have no powers at all and a wrong word or look will set the powerful ones over the edge that they think that had to hurt they physically. Like what happen if a student went too far and actually kill someone?
How the parents and people who are literally in charge of watching these kids will react?
Like I said the story was good, but I stop reading awhile ago, due to the pacing being slow for me.

I would actually say that the story gets BETTER. The main issue is that the story had a bit of a pacing problem at one point, and combine that with waiting weekly and the author taking breaks every now and then, and you get left for awhile just waiting for a specific thing to happen when it just wont. But when the story gets going, IT GETS GOING. UnOrdinary is honestly great at deconstruction a superpowered sociaty, and how messed up it would actually be. At the start, I understood why John was acting like he did, but it just dragged on so long that I didn't feel empathetic toward him anymore. So 1.) While I still personally like this webtoon, I do agree that there are some issues with it
-Pacing: Probably the most common complaint about this comic. The pacing is incredibly sluggish and takes forever for the exciting stuff to happen. But the latest episodes have started to pick up the pace though.
-Bullies: I get that they are trying to sell the whole "strong over the weak" mentality that this world has, but seeing a bunch of bullies beat up John and other low tiers gets really old really fast. Really makes you think "where tf are the teachers". I swear, Darren and that one teacher from episode one are the only adults that are actually doing something about it (actually, I think the first 10 episodes are the only times where any adult has done something about the bullies)
-Art: This is probably just me thing, but the entire Webtoon looks plain af, especially the later episodes. The characters look like something out of "how to draw anime" book, not to mention that the backgrounds look so empty.
-Worldbuilding: This one is my biggest gripe with this webtoon. It's one thing to have a world where only a fraction of the population has a superpower, but it's another to give almost everyone a superpower. And yet, the world itself doesn't seem to revolve around this idea. Sure there's the societal values, but that's pretty much it. There isn't any lore that justifies the people having powers. It's just kinda... there. Literally the only thing that people use their powers for is to start street fights or enforce the law. Why aren't there hospitals run by people with healing/support abilities? Why aren't there delivery men using super speed or teleportation to deliver packages\food in short amount of time? There's this one other webtoon called Ordeal where they let super-powered people fight in MMA tournaments. Why don't they have something like that!? Uru-chan could have done so much more with this idea and I'm kinda disappointed that she didn't go that far.

You’ve put all my thoughts into words lmao I used to be OBSESSED with this webtoon but I gave up on it a long while ago.
Actually, I’m shocked to hear that it’s still going! I swear I first started reading it when I was 12 (or 13 maybe?)… I’m 20 now. This story does NOT have enough lore or worldbuilding to justify the amount of time it is taking for the author to finish it. At least, it seemed that way from where I left off.
If the author wasn’t going to fully flesh out this world and the characters living in it, then she should have wrapped it up years ago. She’s dragging it on at this point (which is the main reason why I dropped it. It became so obvious that the author was slowing the pace down so that she can get as much money out of it as possible, *which is understandable*, but It still made the story harder to read.)
Also, I started to have a hard time liking the main characters. After awhile, the only characters I cared for was Isen, Rei, and Blyke (I think those were their names).
And you’re not the only one who didn’t like the art. I hated it the moment I saw it. It took me awhile to get used to the way it looked. I basically tolerated it because I loved the concept of the story and the characters so much.

And while we're on the topic of these bullies, what infuriates me the most about them is the fact that after John's villain arc ends and he actually starts to help the safe house, absolutely none of them apologized to him about how they treated him before hand. If they had found out that John lost his powers, chances are they'll go back to beating him up because, as Syndrome from the Incredibles said, they only respect him because he's a threat.

Wow, someone with an actually good critique. I am basically reading the comic again because I left it around 200 episodes last time. But yeah the whole bullying thing got old so fast. So it triggered me when Remi was ignorant of all the bullying going around in her school. Like, whenever they show the school hallway, there is a fight. How can something like that be ignored? You can say, she used to ignore such things. But she had a revelation when she saved that small town( Brennish I think). So why was she still ignorant of what was happening around her, till John mentioned it? The Brennish thing happened like 50 episodes prior to her confrontation with John. So it makes you wonder how she failed to grasp what's going on around her, after that incident

As someone who read this, stopped for a while because of pacing issues, then picked it up again - the story gets better. Character development actually happens, and they get humanized in a refreshing way despite their powers. It's not a black-and-white world where it's easy to just deem an unlikable character evil. Heck, I even spent money to Fast Pass because I can't get enough of it right now, man.

I read weekly until like chapter 200 or something and it so dragged out it is literally painful to read, entire chapters of filler/nothing happening and half the time when the plot does advance it is just characters acting in the most irrational way possible. Unordinary fans always say "it's a slow burn bro" but it isn't, it's a slow bore. The character writing is hamfisted and barely coherent at times, the art is mediocre, the worldbuilding is bafflingly shallow and incompetent, the pacing is glacially slow. I don't think I've ever read another piece of media where the author takes so much time to say nothing at all.
If the webtoon was like 1/3 of the size it might be an entertaining read, but as it is it is just tiring waiting week after week for a literal crumb of content that actually matters to the grander narrative. I say this as someone who has been reading weekly chapters of manga/webcomics for a long ass time. It is genuinely baffling to me that people still read this boring ass comic when some of the chapters are literally insulting to the reader in their banality.

  • @grandruby5343

Okay, before I start, I will say that I do indeed have a bias. I’ve been reading this webtoon for years, keeping up with almost every update since sometime around 2018.
But I do believe that Unordinary is one of the few hyped up webtoons that can actually back it up, but not for the reason you may think. It’s action is good, but not nearly as good as a lot of other webtoons such as God of Highschool. What makes Unordinary so damn great is it’s characters, and the motivations for them fighting.
I will go ahead and say that it is a s l o w start. In due part, you can notice the story taking a major shift when Uru’s art stops being so damn shiny and takes a bit more of a natural approach with its colors. The main two protagonists, John and Sera, undergo major changes to their character, John especially, because a large portion of his character arc is learning to accept himself( It may not seem like that, but later chapters will make it obvious), and Sera learning to actually help others and not being biased towards weaker people.
It’s not a full 10/10, but damn it can really get there at some points. As I said, the slow pace can really turn some people off if the initial hook may not be interesting, sometimes the characters can make some questionable decisions, and if you aren’t too keen to the anime esc aesthetic, then it may not be for you.
But whether you left and thinking about reading it again, or new and thinking about reading it, I highly recommend it. A great action story with characters that have TRUE depth to them.

I agree, this has a lot of character building and conflict rising. And I really enjoy the character archetypes, I wish to see more of Isen, Blyke, and Remi they're the ones that showed a lot of growth imo.
From where it's at right now it doesn't seem like the end is near, I just wish that uru chan can fasten up the pace a bit because she just uncovered a huge part of this story.
She uncovered the organizations/actual worldly societal flaws, corruption, it expanded so far out from where it was in the beginning it would actually take forever for the story to finish.
I'm not sure if it's possible to send out 2 eps per week, or even just make longer episodes to cover more parts of the lore, that would actually be pretty cool.
But anyway yeah it's still a very enjoyable webtoon, just wish we got more world building episodes.

This video inspired me to read it and it's fucking incredible actually. I see a lot of people complaining about the pacing and how it wasn't enjoyable but frankly I think that's a them problem. I personally loved it even though I'm not a big fan of slow burn because it REALLY made me feel. I went from loving John to hating him to loving him again and every other character developed in a really realistic and interesting manner. It shows that character development isn't linear. Sometimes you repeat the same mistakes but you've got to learn to forgive yourself and move on. As someone who absolutely detested John in that arc and couldn't justify his actions at all, it's crazy how my feelings have changed. He was traumatized severely and his self-hatred was the root of his problems- he's a flawed protagonist but that's what makes him brilliant. When Sera confronts John at the end of the Joker arc- that was the best payoff possible. Anyway I could go on a 200 page rant about how fucking good it is and if you you don't like it then that's fine and all but don't tell me the plot is generic or shit because it's actually brilliant writing and insanely complex (I say this as a writer who actually hated mha's bad writing and will find faults with almost everything).
    ...
(Also I am fully prepared to back up every point I've made so again, unless pacing was your only issue then don't try to make up things to be mad at or dislike because that's stupid.)

unordinary is basically a solid series, similar to my hero academia. nothing crazy, pretty generic, its just okay overall. it may be a bit overhype but ig thats bc how passionate the community is. webtoon also kinda sucks now, not the stories but the app itself and how it functions, back then i didnt need to pay in order to read an already finished story. the only reason why i still have webtoon is bc of tower of god, i still like the story and i want to support the author (siu).

I’d actually recommend people to read it to learn from John’s arc.
I believe that it’s a prime example of what not to do.
    *Spoilers*
Sure, making your MC beat up every single bully is cathartic to our monkey brain, but it’s not what the story needed.
In writing, obstacles are what keeps the story going.
Having the underdog character suddenly be overpowered is like trying to climb a mountain, looking left, and finding out there was an escalator the whole time. But the whole point of climbing the mountain is to get stronger so that escalator defeats the purpose of mountain climbing in the first place.
Also keep the villain arc going for too long and people will start to hate the character.

    • @skyshale
      @skyshale Год назад +19

i think id have to disagree- the intrigue about john isn't that he's overpowered and can beat up the characters you don't like, it's about how he and the system fail to process the trauma he has in a healthy way and he relapses. he's overly powerful because it benefits the story, he's way too powerful for a person so mentally broken and the systems in place in their incredibly corrupt society only serve to make people like him worse. he's supposed to be the example of what happens when the biases in this society are left unchecked (he grows up without a power, so when he ends up overpowered he gets drunk off it and hurts a lot of people yada yada). the characters are supposed to be a bit unlikeable because they're high tiers and examples of how this society would condition you to think, and they have to learn and grow and change and john beating them down isn't supposed to be a triumph but meant to make you realize how fucked up their world is since you can sort of see it from both perspectives if that makes sense. the obstacle is johns failure to recognize that he needs to process his trauma in order to grow and recognize that people arent all monsters (which, it makes some sense he thinks that way after...everhthing hes been through with the other students authorities etc). that's really long idk if it's just word vomit but it's my thoughts on it

Honestly his whole arc hit far too close to home.
      Imo good writing

Tbh, I think that this trope/pacing COULD work IF (and this is just my opinion) :
      1. John didn't become such a lil shit 💀
      2. The story wasn't hyped to be no power dude vs these powerful dudes (basically an underdog story like weak hero, lookism, viral hit etc)
      3. Or if John REALLY has to be a villain, don't make that plot too long/overbearing (like you said). Give chances for his old kinder self to breath between his evil moments.
There's probably more ways to make this plot better but It's been a while since I last read the webtoon so these are just based on my memory.
Tldr this could work if the pacing and choices made in the story are done a little better :)
Although I do heard John became better as of now so I'll try to check that out soon ^^

I honestly find it pretty good, the story is basic but I’m just low-key a sucker for power tussle and prosecution plots either ways😂 and I find myself rooting for John as he overcomes his past mistakes, accepts his power and better himself. It’s shown to be difficult, infuriating and there are realistic setbacks, and it’s not every fiction u see authentic character development and redemption like that. I will agree it’s so slow paced, especially when John was going berserk, like why drag it on to false jokers and him just terrorising the safe house 💀 and now I don’t understand y we’re going back to remi, isen and blyke’s vigilante spree🙄
But overall it’s good, I kinda enjoy like I enjoy MHA, it’s nothing new but has interesting enough characters and plot to keep me going, a solid 7/10 for me👍🏽

Funny enough, my favorite Webtoon is called “Surviving Romance”
It’s a horror Webtoon about a girl who got to be the main character in her favorite book and she knows each step that the MC takes to get her happy ending with the love interest of the story (who I forgor the name of 💀), whoever are extras and aren’t central to the story are completely faceless and unrecognizable because the MC just sees them as the NPCs
When her happy ending comes though, turns out that her husbando turned into a zombie and bit her hand, then she wakes up in her bed (yup, we’ve got a Groundhog Day situation!) and that’s the first episode
She keeps dying no matter what she does (staying at home, going to different places of the school, and even saving her husbando kills her)
I really recommend reading this webcomic, it’s first season is really good (though it gets pretty slow in the middle and I still hate love triangles, so I wasn’t excited for the second love interest and despised the [little spoiler here] yandere girl extra that’s revealed in the middle-but the MC turns into a badass that eventually doesn’t care about any romance anymore)

I'd say UnOrdinary is the kind of story that does many things good, which makes it so hyped up by the fanbase, yet at the same time it makes also many things bad.
So it's basically a series of highs and lows. Except that, while some highs are pretty high, most of them fail to outbear the lows.
To be honest I still think this webtoon is worth checking out. Especially if you're tired of the superhero genre (cough MHA cough), then I'd say this webtoon gives a breath of fresh air on that one.
Worldbuilding's also pretty good. Plot is a bit gripping, even if it drops down lots of times. There's lots of foreshadowing, so if you're the type of person that likes to pick up on clues and gets the sense of excitment when it turns out to be right, you also may enjoy this.
The only thing I can fully say is meh about this webtoon are 99% of characters. The author does a lot of hinting towards a character development for each of the major ones, so you anticipate it, yet when it finally happens most of the time you're like "...that's it?".
Anyways, tho it makes for a good title, I wouldn't call it just Ordinary.
