  • Starfish or sea stars are beautiful marine animals found in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes . There are over 2000 different species of starfish. All starfish resemble stars and they are actually not fish . They are invertebrates which means animals without backbones. Starfish are also referred to as sea stars. These marine invertebrates are more closely related to urchins, sea cucumbers and sand dollars. They do not have gills , scales or fins like fishes. You will be surprised to know starfish do not have blood. They use Seawater instead to pump nutrients throughout their bodies. Most starfish have five arms , making them look like a star but you will be surprised to know some starfish have more than 40 arms , while some have arms so short that the animal looks like a cushion. If it loses any arms ,the starfish can still survive and it can regrow the lost arm. And if the starfish is cut in half, it will grow into two different starfish. Isn't that amazing? You know what fascinates me is that the arms of a starfish are very bendy because its skeleton is made up of lots of tiny spines that can move in any direction. But what makes them move is tube feet located on their underside . Starfish do not have eyes .
