    Very frustrating to watch. I retired after 47 years of professional flying and I remember this accident. Whenever we took the runway, I always considered it my last opportunity to make sure that I had done everything possible to ensure that the airplane was ready to fly. Both of these pilots were very experienced and I can only blame complacency for this terrible accident.

      I wasn't closed for long, but there were major delays as a result. (I believe the center runway remained closed through the night, so that wouldn't have helped with the delays).

    That was excruciating to listen to. The confusion between the pilots and their seeming inability to concentrate was palpable. The FO didn’t seem to be of much help and didn’t keep the captain on task when he clearly got distracted. And you’d have to think it was the pilots who disabled the takeoff configuration alarm because they were sick of the horn blaring even when the aircraft was configured correctly. Then when it could have actually saved their lives it wasn’t available. Quite ironic in a tragic way.

    I lost a classmate of 12 yrs on that flight: Kurt Dobron. I can only imagine the horrors he went through. The majority of bodies recovered were not whole. Everyone on that flight, and *several* on the ground were killed. Only Cecilia Chichan, at the time a little girl under age 5, was the sole survivor. She appeared in a movie called Sole Survivor, where those who were the only ones in a tragedy to make it out alive, talk about their experiences. Interestingly, famous sports writer and cinematic creator Mitch Albom (Tuesdays with Morrie) wrote about Kurt Dobron's life well-lived, in a Detroit News article. All this needless Northwest flight 255 tragedy could have been averted if the pilots did the very most essential thing for takeoff: Extended the damn *flaps and slats!*

    This has to be one of the most idiotic ways to perish. Setting the flaps and slats is crucial for flight ad the same stupid mistake has been made many times. There should be a throttle lock that will only release if the plane is properly configured for takeoff.

    • @InterWebGuy99
      @InterWebGuy99 2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah, but that makes way too much sense and would be way too simple to do.

    • @jstrahan2
      @jstrahan2 2 месяца назад +8

      A 'throttle lock' would be impractical. Too many variables on what constitutes "properly configured". Also, it could possibly prevent a pilot from using emergency thrust lever movement to get out of the way of something...like a KLM 747 coming right at you (Tenerife). Modern jets do have warning alerts if a particular flap/slat setting range is not appropriate for a takeoff.

    • @gusmc01
      @gusmc01 2 месяца назад +3

      I mean, there was a warning system to serve this exact purpose, notify the pilots that the plane was not properly configured for takeoff. It had been deactivated. Some pilots would probably get annoyed by a throttle lock and deactivate it too.

    • @davidhargrove1648
      @davidhargrove1648 2 месяца назад +2

    I have seen this air crash a million times but never as good as MPC did. That's why I love this channel. The clarity is ridiculously good. I flew for AMERICAN for many years. They had a ton of these md80's. Hated them. Uncomfortable for the passengers and LOUD but cheap to fly. Loved being moved up to the 757-300, 767-300 ER and 777, Yes, I am old. =)

      @ILoveLucy21. 2 месяца назад +3

      I too, was a flight attendant for American!! And yes, I'm old too! However, I LOVED the MD-80/82!!!❤❤ (I have a small shelf on my bookshelf, that has my f/a group graduation picture, a picture of me sitting in the first officer's seat on a MD-80 during flight, a "Dreamsicles flight school" music box, which is BEAUTIFUL!! ❤
      A plush toy American Airplane that is gray, with red, white and blue stripes, with an AA on the tail, and last, a MD-80 Replica model airplane!❤ Of course back when I was flying, it didn't make a difference which aircraft you flew on, the seats were all the same in First/Business class, and in Coach as well. I knew plenty of people who loved the MD-80, and said that it was quiet, and smooth!!!
      I didn't like flying the wide body jets, with dual aisles. Wayyy too much work! I'm older than you most likely OR you graduated after me, because I also flew on the 757 and 767 and the DREADED DC-10!! I HATED THAT PLANE!!!😫 I never flew on a 777. I was based in SFO.
      Anyway, this is a good video, but I like TheFlightChannel just as well. What makes this video better than TFC? The fact that he used the actual CVR in the cockpit/flight deck for us to listen to? OR when he turned over his camera when impact occurred, making it look more real?
      They BOTH are good channels! TFC uses MANY CVR's in ALOT of their crashes too! Watch TFC Northwest Flt. 255 crash. Although he doesn't use the CVR in this particular crash, he gave great info prior to the crash, to let us know exactly what happened prior to the crash!
      -- I LOVE BOTH CHANNELS! ❤️ TFC gives us wayyyyy more info than MPC!! Sometimes, it's too much info for many to understand, like understanding airplane parts. I know alot of info that can cause an airplane crash, simply because I worked for the airlines. However, I'm not a pilot, and I can't fly any type of plane. Sometimes, TFC tries to explain what caused the crash, using plane parts and jargon. Words and sentences that are way harder to understand for many of us subscribers. That is the ONLY thing that I don't like about TFC.
      MPC, just cuts to the chase and shows us as little as possible, that most everybody can understand why the plane crashed.

    I like your video. It's one of the better ones out there and I've seen most of them. We missed actually seeing this happen by about 15 minutes. We did clearly see the smoke from our apartment parking lot in Southgate, 5 miles east of the airport. Which brings me to a suggestion to make your production even better. It was hardly dark outside right before and at the time of the crash. It was still quite light outside. Although the sunset time was just minutes before the crash, in August in Michigan, it takes well over an hour after sunset for it to become completely dark this time of year due to a longer twilight period. There were severe thunderstorms at the airport that evening. If your background captured storms with a still light but nearing dusk sky, you'd have it. Cheers, Ed.

    I read a long article 3 years ago written by a first responder who responded to this tragic crash. It was an interesting article that stated that the crash was HAUNTING, as he witnessed dead bodies everywhere that didn't look like humans. He said that they were either burning to death, or the blunt force trauma tore their bodies apart, including heads! 💀☠️ He also mentioned that he and a coworker found the cockpit, and saw the Captain's BRAIN matter splattered EVERYWHERE around him!! 😫🤢 (on the ceiling, and all down the seat he was sitting in) Can you imagine? That poor responder who has had to live with these images in his mind for 36 years!! Alot of responders, actually! I would have had to be put in a mental hospital/institution years ago after witnessing the GORE/CARNAGE of this accident! This didn't have to happen. All because the flaps/slats were never set correctly! 😭
    Also, when I was a little girl, I had always wanted to work for the airlines. Right after graduating from the University of Alabama, I went straight to the airport to get a flight attendant application. I flew to Dallas to interview and got the job! I was in training for 6 weeks before I actually began flying. This crash happened during my first month with American Airlines as a flight attendant! I remember it like it was yesterday! I remember being so torn up about this crash, that I almost quit! The haunting pictures scared me to death! 😩

    Flaps
    Stabiliser trim
    Cabin
    Nothing else matters much.

    Why isn't there a system that kills takeoff in some way if there are criticality unsafe conditions at takeoff? Not alarms. Shut off the engines.

    I am always fascinated seeing all the no flap take offs crashes how many pilots do not think flaps immediately they have no lift with sufficient airspeed.

    • @donaldwilson5693
      @donaldwilson5693 2 месяца назад

      You would think that would be one of the first things to come to mind. Then, lower the pitch and max power. If you're going fast enough, you can get airborne with no flaps.

      The crash happened at 8:46 pm. Sun sets in August ( Michigan) around 8:36 pm. It's pouring rain so that would definitely make it much darker. I'm thinking the narrator got this one right....

    This channel usually does a great job on these.But it's inexcusable what you left out of this crash. These are the same pilots who flagrantly violated the sterile cockpit rule. RIP,but how can we learn if we hide what they did that was way beyond normal violations of the sterile cockpit. These guys were joking about the deadly Continental crash here in Denver a few months earlier. Unlike this crash-most people survived that crash. But these guys were joking how they better say something so their family members could listen to something WHEN THEY CRASHED,& DIED! And ya-unfortunately their families got plenty to listen to.
    For example,the married pilots flirting with a flight attendant who was allowed in the cockpit during taxi-another flagrant violation. Asking about her dating habits...I'm sure the pilots widows just loved hearing that. Again-we need to learn from their mistakes-im not trying to judge them-it was a different world in 1987.(I was only 11). And we all say dumb stuff from time to time. But ya can't hide what they did when it was so flagrantly blatant. Joking about a deadly crash months earlier,& getting distracted cuz you are trying to hit on your flight attendant when you are married. And to tempt fate by speaking about giving your loved ones something to listen to after you die...then it comes true cuz yes the configurent alarm didn't sound. But mostly cuz they were showing off,& totally distracted trying to impress & flirt with a chick not their wives.
    They didn't deserve to die-nor did the passengers. But to be so distracted as to commit a completely basic error,& for what? Cuz they were thinking with their other heads? And rarely have pilots made bigger fools of themselves-& their families-in hindsight-from what they said on the CVR. I can't imagine the pain of their wives with their husbands dying...then having to hear the nonsense,& disrespectful bile that came out of their mouths to victims of a previous deadly crash,& their own families,& marriage vows. Careful what ya say...God might take ya up on it-whether you think you are funny-or joking...or not.
