Treat Your Pedalboard Like a Modular Synth

  • I hope this actually makes sense to people. Obviously there are those who enjoy rebuilding their board every so often. Or if your board needs to completely change for gigging purposes, this system probably isn't gonna work for you. I think I've reached my limit after a dozens of resets so I had to rethink things.

    Long before I heard about the concept of modular synths or eurorack, I would hang onto every noise maker or effect I could possibly get my hands on. When I got my first Line6 Pod, I would crank the delay time and feedback ALL the way up, so I could get a sound looping and then add in new sounds as the earlier sounds faded out. Then I’d start fiddling about with my different effects and create these amazing and unique performances that I couldn’t possibly repeat. Like one of those rappers who only wants to freestyle, I just loved the ephemeral nature of each performance. It was at least theee decades before I saw someone playing with a modular synths or eurorack and realized that all the little boxes were exactly the same as my various yard sale toy robots, homemade effect pedals, and all the random prototypes I found in my grandfathers basement from back when he worked at Dallas-Arbiter and Mellotron back in the 60’s and 70’s. It was my favorite way to create music and I always thought there should be a proper name for it. But it seemed so unpredictable and it constantly ran the risk of blowing out your speakers if you didn’t have a way to kill the sound at a moments notice.

    Or use a modular synth for your pedal board. There's a company that makes a level conversion module that you can plug a guitar and an amp to and route the signal through your synth. I thought about doing a small block of modular synths on my pedal board.

    My 'hack' is to get a loop switcher that lets you rearrange the pedals.
    With the boss es5 i just have a little desktop synth on the board for an autofilter. The es5 sends midi patches to change the synth e.g. for up or downswept patches.
    You can even put an expression pedal in and convert it to midi cc so i still have a treadle for wah-ing or whatever l. Great channel

    What is the green thing in terms of modulation at the bottom? Also, what makes you want it before your drives? Great video and though process here. If there is one thing I would change about this concept it is putting Velcro horizontally across the entire board so that I can shift my HP to maximize it for new changes. If anything, this is an experiment for what you can do with limited options.

      I think you’re talking about the Phase 45 clone I built and did a weird paint job on. I like to keep phasers a little more subtle by placing them before dirt. Sometimes the sweep will bring out funky stuff you don’t wanna hear if they’re after dirt too.

    The real solution is buying a solid premium multi FX. It solves all problems. Creative routing? Check. Quick settings recall? Check. Using one FX multiple times in a chain without buying two pedals? Check. More portable? Check. More convenient? Check.
    People did not like it though when I posted a video saying that 😅
    I'm one 100% at fault as well. Although my board is modest and for routing I use a patchulator. Works great. But it still lacks the convenience of a Quad Cortex.

    • @BounceChord
      @BounceChord  2 месяца назад +1

      @@SyntheticFuture if I was gigging regularly, I may honestly go this route at this point. I’ve had so many shows where a cable fails me mid song or something. I pulled the bypass switcher off the board a while back but that’s only because my board rarely leaves the stu.
      I do love the idea of creative routing though. A programmable switcher would do that for me. That would actually make it more like a modular synth too. Perhaps one day.

    I like your concept. I would need to account space for "special" pedals, such as the Freqout, the EHX Pico Attack Decay, and the TCE Infinite Sample Sustainer. I might want to add a EHX String9, or a Boss PS-6 at some point. I suppose I could limit myself to only two special pedals. That might work within the confines of your modular synth idea.

    As a modular synth user, somehow the power situation is even more frustrating in the pedal world. Every time I want to rearrange my board, I have to spend an hour on my spreadsheet figuring out what lines go where based on power needs, and because I'm too dumb to label them properly, it usually involves re-running the power cables completely. Any suggestions? Currently using the MXR ISO-Brick on my board, but I'm open to swapping it out.

      @@BeniRoseMusic oh yeah, that’s an annoying one that I should’ve addressed in the video. I use Strymon power supplies which give you isolated power and up to 500mA from each port. Only thing that didn’t work for me with these supplies was one pedal from Walrus but otherwise they’re fool proof.
