The thing about Brandi is that aside from her insanely pure and out of this world voice with the most incredible range and nuance, she is always so, so happy after she sings a song. Her face and whole being light up in incredible joy. This is truly what she is meant to do with her life and as everyone knows, did it for little money for years and years. That is the sign of a true artist. The fact that she is finally becoming mainstream and making real money from her life's work of art, is long overdue and so well deserved. She is truly an incredible talent.
To add to that, singing a song from so early in her career just shows how well her music ages. The more you live, the more of a story you have to tell.
I've heard her sing this song before, but the rock out with sidistorted guitars was great feel like she enjoyed it toocommons above in this thread dais how
I missed this performance, no surprise. I don't watch network TV. This performance was one of those like GooGoo Dolls in the rain in Buffalo where the artist just gives everything they are to the audience, and the audience amplifies it back. Moments in history.
I spent a week in the hospital at the end of March and one night when I couldn't sleep I sat looking up every performance I could find of Brandi's and she drove away the fear and loneliness of those long nights.
Brandi is possibly the best live performer I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. I don’t usually expect to hear the exact same vocal quality in live performances vs. studio recording, but, holy cow, she is phenomenal.
True talent doesn’t need all the tech stuff! True talent sounds better in person. I once heard Andy Williams live, about 6 rows from stage. Was never overalls impressed with him until I heard him in person. Pure voice! Appreciate vocalists from the past because what you heard was real! Brandi fits in this category! Pure voice. Pure talent!
The amazing thing about her and the band is that they have always preferred to play smaller venues… I first saw her back in ‘98 at a dive bar called the Garage in Ballard, Seattle… and now 25 years later we still go see her every time she comes to Texas … we were thrilled to meet her after a show a few years ago in New Braunfels TX… my husband and I actually ran into her when the whole band was tubing/swimming in the river that afternoon…. She’s simply one of the best live performers ever!!!
I'm so happy that this amazing performer is finally seeing the kind of recognition she has earned. She's performed with every famous artist in the industry and people still ask who she is. Who she is, is incredible.
Just curious, what are the other 4? If they are as good as Brandi then I’ll need to look them up. Brandi’s yodels just tug at my heart & puts me in a puddle of tears.
Her voice is so ephemeral in that it can be both brassy and intimate in the same song, sometimes even in the same line, as with this BARN BURNER. I just LOVE watching her have fun and rock out in the loud parts, and then ease it back down to a closer and more private place for the lines that need it. I also LOVE that she allows her voice to break in certain parts, which really accents the psychological and emotional catharsis of the song. That husky tremble that drops here and there just sends shivers down my spine.
You articulated the magic of her voice and performance so perfectly! Thank you for that. I think one of the things I enjoy most about this performance is that it is both an ode to her fans and a stunning display of how much her voice has grown and blossomed over the years. Her ability to control and emote her voice has expanded exponentially over the years and it's such a privilege to hear how she has mastered such a difficult instrument.
“If Dolly Parton covers your song, you know it’s a heck of a song and she respects you, Brandi.” Your music and YOUR story is remarkable and it give us hope that keeping the faith and never stop grinding pays off. Keep up the great work and we look forward to seeing your story continue. God Bless.
This song is my husband and I. Married 37 years, raised three daughters, still best friends and laughing now going into our golden years enjoying every minute and holding on to each cherished moment left.
You are lucky. Cherish it. I love this song because it speaks to me and how I’m feeling. I lost my husband of 25 years to leukemia. ‘Stories don’t mean anything if you got no one to tell them to’
There is nobody like Brandi Carlile. My husband introduced me to her many many years ago and I am truly thankful. We saw her in concert twice. It's like she makes you her best friend when she preforms. Truly Amazing.
This performance is the first time I'd ever heard Brandi Carlile's music, and I was really, really moved by her voice and the music as a whole. Instantly became a huge fan.
Her voice cracks and the imperfections makes this song absolute perfection. I’m not fond of others covering this song as it just lacks the depth Brandi delivers. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@geoffpalmer6424 I was scrolling through the comments while listening to this again & noticed that I accidentally gave you a thumbs down instead of a thumbs up. I apologize! I was in NYC in 2019 and was looking for something fun to do. I had gone to a show on Broadway the night before and figured I'd go to a foreign movie or something I couldn't do at home. I saw that BC was playing at MSG and I vaguely knew who she was so I checked a 3rd party ticket seller and bought a ticket, thinking it might not even be a real ticket to be honest. OG Brandi fan right here who first saw her live in 2007 and had been listening to her for years before that. So happy she still performs this song live as it still gives me goosebumps and takes my breath away in one fell swoop 🙏🏼.
From the moment I heard this song and her voice many, many, many years ago, she stopped me in my tracks. She is a living legend and continues to amaze me no matter how many times I hear her sing. Sidenote - the cracks in her voice have always been my favorite thing! Forever a fan ❤️
Literally me too. Was a passenger in a car- playing w radio- caught it and had the driver pull over. I was like is this rock or folk or country or heavy metal. What is going on. The song kept getting better and better and it ended. And we both were silent and stunned.
Well I know for sure...that "this story" won't ever die. This story of ever loving this song and ur heart jumps every time u come back to the song. And just goosebumps all over again.....❤ This song holds our stories
The labum before last, By The Way, I Forgive You, actually did win a Grammy! I really recommend it, especially The Mother (which is a parenthood song that shines after 20+ years of only hearing With Arms Wide Open on the radio), Sugartooth (which is like an arena country song honouring someone who passed away due to an opioid addiction), Everytime I Hear That Song (which drops the title of the album), Most of All (which, personally, made me think of my parents eventually passing away) and Fulton County Jane Doe. Fantastic album.
Always amazing, she performs with such great joy to be there on stage singing for an audience. Their hard work has paid off, but she still gives her bands talent and experience to include up and coming artist on the stage with them. A true national treasure, we all thank you for your gifts to us, the soundtrack of life.

I apologize if I aleady posted here - but this song (and this particular version) is simply a life changing moment. thank you Ms Carlile; your band of course is simply amazing.
I wouldn't consider Brandi country though. She classifies herself as Americana. There is a bit of country flavor there, but also folk and rock. Sometimes a little pop. I actively dislike almost all country. I can barely listen to most of it except a few songs that I like. But I own two Brandi Carlile cds and have many of her songs on my Playlists. Maybe she is more old style country, but still not really. The twins were rock before they joined her to make their band. Her recent Grammy was for rock! Americana is a large umbrella but in my mind distinct from country.

Great, and really live. This can not be said about Brian Adams performing at SNL, totally not live, terrible.

She was pure rockstar in this performance.🤘🎸
I f*cking love it and I love her.
*- Haha... YES! And, in a non-sexual way, I love YOU too!*

Oh oh oh! How fantastic
She opened up for pink and was fantastic ❤
Damn that's a stunning performance of this song
I am not a country music fan but -The Story- is an awesome album that I recommend to all.
Oh my God what a talent and a trailblazer we got here!!!!!!!!!Hillbilly Rock n Roll Rebel!
Chills over and over
Just the most beautiful person in the world 🖤
