- I got to looking at my military themed multi tools from Leatherman today. I tried to consider what I would like to see in a multi tool if I were in the military. Now, as a Leatherman Surge user, I may be completely biased. However, that is the platform I believe would be best suited for a general military tools. Let me show you what I have come up with.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. What leatherman needs to do is offer an online order. Where you can customize what you want. Offer the base platforms. Once you choose your platform, then you get to pick the tools that go into it. I'd be willing to pay as much for that tool as I do for a firearm. I mean, let's get into the 21st century.
People say the same about Victorinox (for SAKs and Swisstools) but it's never going to happen. If that were the case, then people would just buy one Leatherman and one SAK for life, given that they're so durable. Their business model is based on people buying more than one of each model, I bet you don't own just one multitool or one SAK (if you own any SAKs) and it's the same with me and many other people. I don't think it's unfair tbh, look how smartphone manufacturers make sure that people regularly keep having to upgrade their phones as they become obsolete due to software or just following trends, or even because as phones got bigger they are more liable to be dropped and break. You can buy a lot of multitools and knives for the price of just one iPhone.

The Wave was the tool for me in the Marines. I understand the capability of the Mut for cleaning the M4. Most of the cleaning on that fucker we did with $1 toothbrushes.
What about the bolt override? How useful would that have been?
@@txtoolcrib I did not need it. I was Supply so I didn’t rely on the weapon so much. My armorers loved the Mut for that and other functions.
@@txtoolcrib The only tool required to clear a user serviceable malfunction (ie something that isn't a broken part) is a cleaning rod for a stuck case caused by case head separation, burst case, or chamber foul/brazing, this applies to every military small arm I've ever seen. Don't stick any tool into your weapon to clear a bolt override. Drop magazine, grasp charging handle and jerk to slightly retract while applying thumb to bolt cutout (that's what it's there for) to hold bolt in place, strike charging handle with the side of your hand to drive the charging handle/BCG forward, rack once to clear, reinsert fresh magazine, retain dropped magazine to recover ammo and immediately destroy it or mark for training purposes as it's feed lips are out of spec. Only takes a couple of seconds, can be done in the dark under NODs by feel, applies to all infantry small arms. Been teaching it to host nation partner forces and using it with teammates for a decade+.

Bolt override tool sounds cool in concept but in practice it's job can be done without tools if you have a brass over bcg or double feed etc you just rip out the mag grab the T handle and mortar it on the ground if it's stuck or stick your fingers into the mag well to clear a double feed if the case is stuck in the chamber then you need to grab it with pliers or use a knife to extract it or worst case knock it out with a brass rod
Though i agree that military ciuld benefit from a Surge based tool, I think soldiers usually have a fix blade main knife. So maybe thats the reason why having a one hand open knife on a multitool isn’t that important.

That has definitely been what most people I have concluded as well. That being said, I would still want my multi tool blade to be one hand accessible, even serving in a back up role.

Most Operators in the Military carry a dedicated Knife , the knife on your Multitool is back up, The tool is used in the rear with the gear or after the daily op and cleaning your weapon maintaining your gear/equipment, etc but the tool will be carried in a dirty environment and the 300 being enclosed probably mitigates this better than the Surge
Leatherman needs to go ahead and give you a job as a designer for them! Your ideas are spot on and I think alot of people would like to see some of you ideas being put into production!
I know I would, but they may not be feasible from a business perspective.

I never been in any military, but base on my experience, I'd say weight, cost & simplistic are important factors to consider.
As retired army you are exactly right. The 300m is just about perfect. If I am relying on the blade of a multi-tool to save my life, I am in more trouble than I have ever seen. I have enough instant access blades as it is.

Agree with you on the Surge. As you say, I think the MUT EOD is hard to improve upon--as a military combo tool for a grunt or special operator. Of course, much depends on situation and mission--or MOS. My orientation is that of an ex-spec ops guy. I will add that, generally speaking, the saw is pretty much a must. It's a survival item, i.e., part of a survival kit. (We used to favor the large, lockblade "Sierra Saws.") You need it for cutting light timber and building things. The saw on the MUT is usable for this. I don't recall ever needing a file in the field--but I guess it could happen. Agree that the large, flathead driver should stay. Thanks again for your videos.

I think I much rather would have seen this military version on the Surge. I just generally feel that it makes it better platform all around.
During my career in the Navy my job dealt with repairing/maintaining shipboard systems (piping, metalwork, welding, watertight closures, etc.). We all carried a folding knife of some sort (belt-carried Buck in a sheath usually. Tools were selected depending on the task at hand. We often carried hand tools in sturdy canvas bags. Carrying a bulky multi-tool in a sheath, or even a pocket would have been impractical in my experience. We didn't have the cargo pocket utility "cammies" they wear these days. We were still wearing the bell-bottom dungarees (yep, everyone knew what branch of military we were in back then), and those flat "patch" pockets were not designed to actually carry anything of bulk, short of a Zippo lighter. Anyway, I can't confirm it, but I'm sure some of the Fleet sailors of today more than likely are carrying a multi-tool of some sort in one of their cargo pockets. A belt-carried Surge would still not be conducive (imo) for easily transiting through a 16" scuttle (round hatch for those not familiar).
Makes sense, at least for the Navy personnel.
I've only seen merc's and private security carry these specialized mt's. Regular military just carry their standard issued mp600 or swisstool (airforce).
My wife said a lot of people carried Gerber in her CASH.
@@txtoolcrib Probably because Gerbers for a long time could be ordered from GSA and if the unit would front the $$ it would be free for the Soldier.
I would think military personnel would be carrying a dedicated blade probably a folder and coast and lightweight design and sleekness of the 300 makes more sense
This was my thought too. When he mentioned having quick access to a knife blade I figured someone in the military would already have that covered - I wouldn't want to go hand to hand with someone using a multitool knife vs something like a KA-Bar, so super quick access perhaps not that important?

This! When i was in the army, allmost no one carried a MT. And the ones that did kept it in their backpack. It kind of gets in the way, and gets lost when you creep aroud or stolen... And we had everything we needed for the job anyways. A small fixed blade (skinner'ish style) was quite popular though. Used for opening rations, cutting string/sewing tread, foodprep and general utility... I still have my Ka-Bar 1441 from back then.
Seems a lot of people are of the same opinion. I still would want the Surge platform myself though, probably because I’m highly biased towards that model.
I carried a Swiss Tool -X while I was in the military and the most common tool I used on it were the scissors. I did end up getting the Leatherman MUT and the Gerber E-Fect. I kept them in my Range Bag when we went out, but now I keep the Gerber in my Tool drawer and the MUT in my personal range bag.
I am actually in the planning process of combining tools from the 300m, 300EOD, and MUT. I’m turning it into a range tool. One side of the EOD frame to keep the C4 tool. Awl for the 1/8 driver. The MUT pin punch, 20 bits, and sight adjustment tool to round out the kit. I carry a dedicated blade so the ones being interior are just back ups. Would be nice to have a Charge type serrated blade that would go interior.

I spent my time as an airborne long range recon ranger. The surge was a good call. The exchanger needs to stay because you can use the diamond file to sharpen the knife and you need to have the saw. If you use the long scraper it will work as a C4 punch. Combo blades suck and you need a plain edge back near the handle for carving trap triggers ect. Again as to the surge it is what I bought my nephew when he graduated basic and was headed to his AIT.
I am about as close to being a soldier as I am to being a model, but I find the design idea behind the MUT super cool. I would love to see a general use (I know this means different things to different people). Skipping those two non-locking tools and saw, adding surge scissors and a t-shank would still leave one more slot for something useful. The way MUT is configured takes some heavy modding to get it there and most of users are not quite up to it. Long story short - I would love to get the MUT, but will most likely end up with the surge.
honestly as a soldier i always carry a blackend Leatherman Rebar, because it is cheap and built like a tank, and a Kershaw Funxion EMT for a knife with extra features, and a Benchmade Mini bugout in my shirt pocket with a pen, as a backup so fast access to a blade is not an issue, and less bits and parts to lose thats why Rebar and Supertool are much more prefered
the T shang is just the best way to utilize any saw/files due to the fact that unlike a blade that is relatively easy to sharpen once it gets dull, the maintenance of a saw/file is extremely difficult or impossible so the easy replacement option is what makes the tool special, not the ability to have a saw and a file in a single slot
The enclosed nature of the tool and the smoother exterior would pay dividends in a military environment.
The "whys" kinda reminded me that Australia choose the Victorinox SwissTool but the government ended up gaving the military Schrade, which is like trading a diamond for a length of straw. In any case, one-handed openings would make a pretty good choice for military personnel i guess for easy access and while using gloves etc.
Regarding the file/saw issue. That's why I really like the 300 platform. My 300 houses the file, saw, serrated and plain edge blades and the EOD blade exchanger with a metal saw. 5 big tools only works on the 300 platform, not on the Surge.
As somebody in the military if I was in a combat scenario I would not only want a multitool but like a 6 to 8 inch fixed blade knife. Something I can pry or knock out a window with or say I need to cut something quickly.
When I’m in the field I often carry a utility knife because most often in the field I’m just cutting paracord, opening mres or cutting duct tape if need be.
I also agree with you I would prefer a saw over a serrated blade. I can’t tell you how many times I need to tighten a bolt with my multitool so pliers are very important.
So would a knifeless version be better suited for this type a tool then?
Maybe exchange it for either scissors or a cutting hook similar to the OHT?
In 5 years in the British military I only ever had to tighten bolts when I was on a vehicle based detachment, where we had a box of dedicated tools, in fact the ubiquitous adjustable spanner/wrench was the most commonly used tool. If we were in the field as infantrymen, nobody needed to tighten a bolt. The German Army and Swiss Army, as well as some other European armies, use the Victorinox Soldier which has a saw as big as those on the larger Leathermans.
@@simonh6371 I really only use it for one bolt and it’s a pretty critical one. Me and plenty of other soldiers use it to tighten your baseplate for your nods. If you don’t your nods just wobble everywhere while you’re walking. Countless soldiers have borrowed my multitool to tighten their baseplate.
I'm not military but I have never relied on a leatherman for a quick access primary blade. The leatherman knife blades have always been used as beater/backup blades for me when I carry a multi tool. To that end I do agree that 1 combo blade to free up a tool slot would be perfect.
I'm way late here, but just stumbled across this video. There's a couple things I disagree with, but again, it's all subjective to the individual. As far as needing quick access to the knife blade, most military personnel, if not all, are going to carry a primary blade. The multi-tool blade is more of a backup or for completing less important tasks to save the primary cutting tool when appropriate. The second opinion is on the t-shank blade exchanger. While it may not seem important or convenient to carry multiple blades/files, it's a very nice option, and having the ability to remove the file allows you to use it to touch up all of your knife blades, including the one on the multi-tool itself.
Some great points for sure. Although I think I would rather see them put into a wave or a charge due to weight and ease of carry.
add space for 2 extra big slots. 6 main tools rather than 4 little bigger but much more versatile
The 300 looks to be more enclosed from dirt, compared to other leathermen (except when using pliers), so that’s a potential benefit for someone working outside. Of course with a military contract, cost was very likely to be the determining factor.

The Gerber 400 was the first multi tool issued by the Canadian Army to replace the C5 Clasp Knife. I think they allow both Gerber and SOG now.

your thoughts are pretty much exactly why I've carried a surge for ten years in the middle east and north africa. Also, a carbon scraper really isn't needed on a multitool as it's going to be in your weapons cleaning kit anyway (and also it's generally not needed when cleaning weapons unless they're about to be gauged for armorer level preventative maintenance checks)
Excellent point. Though, I still think some people might like the redundancy on a multi tool instead of having to pull out their kit every time.

They should make job specific multitools. Like one for mechanics, welders, electricians etc.
I am retired army with 29 years service, six years in combat. A weapons cleaning function is irrelevant, you need to have your own compact cleaning kit. My first combat tour to El Salvador, I carried a Victorinox tinkerer and a Kabar. Used tinkerer daily so I was sold on multi tools for combat. In desert storm just ran with tinkerer...again daily use. In Bosnia I used SOG Powerassist...great for cutting concertina along with the M9 bayonet I started to carry, which I mainly used as a pointer during briefings. This set up stayed in place through Iraq 2004-2005, Afganistan 2007 and Iraq 2010. The SOG Powerassist was stainless steel and I stored in my 9mm magazine pouch. I carried an M9 bayonet because I was an Infantry Officer. I would recommend a small 5" fixed blade survival type knife as a combat fixed blade, but remember I survived 6 years of combat only using fixed blade as briefing pointer. The stainless steel SOG was easy maintenance compared to black oxide tools. If I went to combat today I would take a Leatherman Charge+ and a 5" survival knife.
Simplicity and lock strenght is what I would want in a tool. Less can go wrong on the 300. It makes for a better military/survival tool IMO
I'm a currently serving and my favourite multitool to use is the SOG power access assist.
Does the OHT considered as a Military MT too? Cos its able to attached a barrel brush cleaner for an AR. And what's your take on the OHT? Heard Its gonna be discontinued. I got 1 just a month ago..n so far i kinda enjoy using it
I am in the military and in my opinion the surge as is is more then sufficient for most of us. The two things I really apreciated on the 300M were the bit extender and the sheath. Specifically the place for the bit extender inside the sheath and the greatly incresed adaptability of the bit extender. As for the rest of the "military" tools on the 300M I apreciate most of them as non essential. To me the Surge is king and, although I would apreciate the option to configure one myself, I still think, as Ben does, that with very few mods the Surge would make a much more usefull military tool then the 300M.

Hello, Ben - excellent video - I like the alternatives for a Surge M...I was thinking also on some changes for the 300M...the blade can be changed for a combo, the serrated for the saw/exchanger of the 300EOD(for wood,metal and other capabilities)and the threaded punch of the 300EOD can replace the driver next to the scraper...I imagine the 300M may need to be reconfigured for these changes....What do you think?
I really like the look and tool set of the Mut. I think was thinking of the signal for EDC but the Mut seems to be more heavy duty and useful. Would you ever actually edc ( pocket carry ) the MUT or is it just way too big?
Being a retired grunt. The saw is not needed in the field. I never used it, or know or saw (no pun) anyone use it. If you need to sere over 48 hours, which is what you’d more than likely use the saw for, you’re either retrieved, captured or dead. I never used the scissors on this format. Scissors were only used prepping for uniform inspections, which are never done in the field. The weapons maintenance tools are a waste too. Weapons maintenance tools are in the butt of your rifle or pack. I’ve never seen anyone use a multi tool for weapons maintenance. Site adjustments were done with brass or the screwdriver. I used the serrated blade all the time, cutting comm wire, opening mre boxes by cutting the straps and occasionally 550 cord. The screwdriver probably gets the most use because I saw it used for prying and most equip is assembled with either spring assisted screws and the screwdriver fit both flat and Phillips. The straight blade was typically used for opening mre. The most used tool is the pocket knife which was generally a cheap gerber, sog, spyderco, ckrt, or kershaw bought from the exchange. Very few k-bars or fixed blades were seen in the field and if you did see them, the boots had them and they were in mint condition
So, in your estimation, a multi tool is pointless then?
@@txtoolcrib No. The need for a multi tool is dependent on one’s occupational speciality. I can’t speak for other branches, but in the Marines and Navy, if you have a job that requires tools, basically any maintenance job, you can only use the tools that are authorized for that maintenance task. If you’re caught using anything else, it’s a violation that could get you in hot water. We even have to use issued box cutters as prescribed in the safety manuals. So other than personal use multi tools are rarely used on duty. If you have a field occupation or EOD you’re issued a kit that has the authorized tools, non-magnetic or otherwise. Sadly, we only get multi tools because we can get it for free from the supply system. If we buy them, they are for personal use doing mundane tasks like cutting wire, food prep, opening boxes or maintenance and repair on personal items. I also can’t speak to what SF or EOD trades would do with a multi tool. But having also worked closely with combat engineers, rarely are multi tools used on the job.

If you make the scraper flat on the end you’ll have a nice big flat head screw driver eliminating the need for one on the inside
I know a couple aircraft mechanics in the military and they carry the surge with a pocket clip.

Ive carried and MUT surge and 300m on deployments. I think i prefer the 300m for working in dusty environments as its closed up design keeps dust and dirt off of the inner tools more. And ive never known a mil dude to not carry a regular folding knife to get to quickly.
As a marine combat veteran I have the following wish. I will be carrying a fixed blade combo knife so in my multi tool I would like a Leatherman crunch with blade delete..solid Phillips and flat drivers...pry bar..punch..scraper..and tobacco sauce dispenser

I would say that if you are in a dangerous situation and you need a knife you better go with your ka bar rather than the blade in the multitool
That's a good point. I wouldn't dream that you would be relying on a multi tool blade as your primary knife. That being said, I still want it one hand accessible, even if it is just a backup blade.

It’s more like business decision. Larger profit margins, they can mass produce them on older machines this is a true military thing. They don’t want the best. They want something that is good enough for the right price at the right quantity.

As a soldier I found the MUT just too heavy to carry. Too much other stuff to carry thanks.
Honestly, the MUT is about perfect for what it does in as much that Leather man would do best to make a Surge-based supplementary tool to the MUT, not a different tool. So, theybwould be meant to go together rather than replace the MUT. For example, scissors. Being an infantry guy, having scissors is just necessary, especially some outboard ones like the Surge. Don't get rid of them. Also, I get why EOD needs a metal saw, but regular infantry guys do too. Leave the MUT alone and just add one to the Surge. Sometimes you need two bit drivers at once, so that would be about the only redundancy. But, don't even have knife blades in the tool. You don't need a knife that often if you have other tools. Keep the nail puller from the 300M. My point is make it have all and only the tools the MUT doesn't have as a partner tool to the MUT. That would just be the best. Of they were issued in a way that the MUT was meant to be carried on body and the supplementary military Surge to be carried in a pack, that would be a Marine's complete tool box in just two hands.
An all tool version of the Surge would be pretty cool, opens up a lot of possibilities.
For me personally, I always have a fixed blade knife on me. Not for everybody, but I don't need the knife blades at all. Putting some other tools in there would be awesome. In my Surge in fact, I've replaced the plain edge blade with a 3D printed scalpel handle. Much more useful to me. The serrated blade I can still use as a lateral chisel scribing knife. When I was in the military though, I rarely needed a knife compared to how often I needed a small pry bar or driver. There is also an argument to be made that there should be fewer tools that are much more robust. Military guys are young and dumb and rough on their tools. Lol
Best tool I carried in the military was the CRKT RAK tool (I think it was called) as I could lend it out without worry that it would be broken.
I love the surge as is and dont see an advantage to releasing a militarized version being lots of military, police, fire along with search and rescue personel already carry the surge in stainless or black oxide. I would love to see a version of the surge offered with a Magnacut or S30v/S90v blade but I believe Leatherman could do that without releasing it as a "military" variant for $400+. If they made the surge with a high end steel blade around the $260-$300 price mark it would sell like crazy especially if they started selling the blade's individually as an upgrade option to the original surge I could see people spending $100+ on a upgraded blade replacement alone.

The saw blade exchanger on the Surge is not sturdy. Mine broke within a couple weeks of ownership. I used the saws and file blades at least once every two day during that time. I prefer the saw blade holder on the Supertool 300 EOD, which has held up well for me. I also have the regular ST300 and the saw and file on it are still going strong. That saw bit holder was the only thing I didn’t like about the Surge. Military personnel would likely have a dedicated fixed blade or folder to deploy quickly, same as most civilian EDC carriers. I have s developed the finesse to deploy my knife blade quick enough for my needs only using one hand, with the ST300. I had to do this a few times while on a ladder.
And they could call it the Surgent* trademark to myself if Leatherman sees this ** 😂

I think I would want the standard 300 but replace the knives with the replaceable metal saw and carbon scraper
There’s an idea, make it all tools. I could get behind that. Military personnel are likely to carry a much better knife on them than a multi tool can offer.
I need to get around to grabbing a few MUTs. They do seem somewhat interesting.
Surge based specialist tool would be pretty interesting. I just feel like the answer is (and SHOULD) almost always be Surge.
That’s how I feel, but quite a few people seem to like the 300 platform more.

Knives are NEVER urgently "needed" bullets are faster
robustness, comfort after HOURS of use, easy cleaning/hard to gunk matters
outside opening tools create grime collecting hot spots.
Lets see a Surge or 300 modified as a Maritime tool Incorporate a 3" Marlin Spike, add a Shakel Key,
My guess:

2. Weight
The OHT for me hands down had been a priceless peice of equipment , only wish could swap out the 45°/Flaty cutter with a 3 sided file.
I like the idea, I just wish they could have changed the toolset up a bit.
@@txtoolcrib also agree on that too, it really be nice if they would just go ahead and make all the tools with interchangeable set ups once you buy a tool you can kind of build it as your own depending on the task you need it for without all the pesky modding and dealing with them lovely little brass washers in between each tool
Also check out R.A.E- Gear for in my opinion the best way to carry a multi-tool on the Belt as far as the sheath goes. I've been using them for about 4 years with re bar super tool 300 M and oht and a 300 and oht I swap out as dailies depending on what I got going on.

Your main point it's why the 300 plataform IF do not have food mechanic function related to the military. . .
About the Surge it's a plataform with outside tools, but the MUT too so I believe it's why they don't do two OUTSIDE tools plataforms. Plus mility had a dedicated knife, this said they knife its a secondary point while the fire weapon it's the primary. Maybe the 300 with inside tools are towards maintenance of weapons and/or in off duty stuff. Its not dedicated for combat but maintenance.
Just a thought brother. I love you bring very good tooic lately. This is what it made great the LM community when people express ...

Coz you are not in military, you dont understood that a multitool is the back up, plan b or c, or last solution. That means, not a problem to open a multitool for the blade coz in stretch situation i'll use my main tough knife. etc
I get that, I still don’t like the idea of fumbling to get to a knife blade, saw, file, etc.... even on a backup. Especially when there is a solution to eliminate that issue.

Maybe if they re-designed it. Yes, it has all one-handed opening tools, but they’re kind of lacking don’t you think?

Why would someone in the military rely on a multi tool for a quickly accessable blade just carry a fixed blade I'm not even in the military and that's what I do, it's a game changer.
If leatherman truly wants to revitalize their brand, they need to start listening to their loyal customers, like Ben and stop with gimmicks like “leatherman Garage”.
The downfall of companies is usually when they stop listening to their consumers and you can tell that leatherman hasn’t been listening to theirs. leatherman has gotten stale and has lost their momentum and is now being surpassed by competitors.
I'm not military but I have never relied on a leatherman for a quick access primary blade. The leatherman knife blades have always been used as beater/backup blades for me when I carry a multi tool. To that end I do agree that 1 combo blade to free up a tool slot would be perfect.
