  • Demonstration of a couple more trip tests to visualize the operation of the tripping system in the Andelect or ABB RMU
    Electricity source 100 Volt AC at 100 Amps under short cct conditions.
    You will notice the potential lights dim under the short circuit load.

    Excellent! This visual representation of the striker pin fuse operation makes complete sense!

    Awesome video!! Love seeing the striker pin in action 😊

    Excellent demonstration, thank you for showing this video, interesting to see how that unit operates and disconnecting the remaining phases. Pretty complex fuses, I bet they would cost a few bucks. Merry Christmas to you and your family Ray, hope you have a great new year! Dont forget to buy your Missus something special, maybe a decent HV transformer or something. Ooops I mean something like some Jewellery or a fancy Dinner out!

      +rustymotor They cost about 200 $ each. When one fails on site, all three need to be replaced, hence I had some to play with.

      +rustymotor Cheer, Have a Merry Christmas too up in warm outback Australia. Maybe some good thunderstorms as a X-mas pressie ? Yes, I will make for my misses maybe an electric home build wasp or fly zapper as a special pressie.

      +RODALCO2007 Expecting good storms this afternoon, tropical moisture moving through and hot day, perfect recipe for storms. I am preparing my RC glider and camera at the moment and will head out bush soon so hopefully will get some live action. I will try and fly the unit under the storm and get some good lightning action and hopefully not lose the rig to updrafts or lightning strikes! The Boss will be very pleased with a Wasp zapper, good for all sorts of bothersome insects. I was working on an old washing machine for my Missus, its an early one with a fitted small petrol engine, the sort used out bush with no electricity. I am sure the Woman will be happy with it as the machine she is currently using is just about stuffed and she wants a new one. This old one I am working on needs a few parts so it wont be ready for Xmas so maybe for her birthday next year.

      +RODALCO2007 Ah that's why you're blowing them, I thought 'what a waste' but yeah, i can see the logic, one or both of the other 2 fuses would have been stressed and might be a failure point later under normal load.

      +rustymotor Fabulous ! a petrol engine driven washing machine. Love to see that in action one day. Love to see one of you awesome Australian Thunderstorm video's again. Hopefully there is some good action this afternoon. Actually I need to see one again with my own eyes, perhaps next year.

    That's cool, it never even occurred to me that the other 2 phases would be shut off too when a fuse goes off, but makes sense. If it's driving a big motor or multiple loads spread on several phases at a factory or something you probably don't want 2 phases to stay on.

      Hell no you don't! XD
      3 phase motors don't like running on two phases.
      At my school, we had a feeder line arc out, blowing the fuse on the B phase (I think it was B phase). This left two other phases still connected ... (we don't use these RMU units here, from what I know ... probably because it's too expensive XDDDDDDDDD) ... we were investigating why parts of the building had no power ... we went into the boiler room and were hit by a really bad smell! ... I spotted one of the heating system circulator pump motors smoking ... yikes! O.o
      After we measured the voltage, we found that one phase was quite low, at only a few volts. That was the problem! Poor motor though ... oh well, I guess it had a good life!

    Id love to get into the distribution side of the industry. Looks way more interesting than the general Electrical Side of things

    Hi yes I understand your explanation sometime the electrical noise from an arc can travel a long way

    Mind doing a video about what a RMU actually is?
    Looks like a good explaination for the fuse part, very nice.

      +erlendse Look at the Piha RMU maintenance video uploaded last week. It is a switching device to isolate a transformer or fused line from a main feeder line or make a controlled isolation in a main circuit for maintenance after a parrallel was made with another circuit.

      Thanks :) Would be neat to see the grid wired with smaller parts and shorter wires, but same type setup.

      I agree, it would be fun to have RODALCO teach us some stuff about the power distribution. After all, he hasn't done a video like that in a long while :P
      It'd be long winded for some, but well worth it for others to watch!

    Great video! Are these sand filled or do they work like DDO fuses to break the arc?

    • @RODALCO2007
      @RODALCO2007  9 лет назад +2

      +CAL'S ENGINEERING They are sand filled, will do an autopsy over the X-mas break.

      Photonicinduction did a teardown of one of these types of fuses, if you can't wait XD
      But I like this vid better because it describes (and shows) what the purpose of the "striker pin" is. :D
      ... Plus, RODALCO is one of the first channels I subscribed to XD ... gosh, I think was back in 2011 maybe?! O.o

    Ray have you not switched over to the brown/black/grey colours for 3 phase or is it just the EU?

    Very interesting video I remember when I worked at a factory in my previous life a few times all lights would dim and motors would make loud buzzing noise for a few seconds then all power off I asked our leccy what happened and he said was 11Kv fault must have been fuse going in RMU I just didn't know it then sorry for ramble merry xmas

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 9 лет назад

      +jon johnson
      That's neat to know! Yes a fault could make motors buzz, because the arc is sort of like a random frequency generator (Not always, but sometimes), interrupting the power at varying intervals because it actually loads down the power lines so much. Eh, I hope you can understand my explanation XD

    • @jonjohnson3372
      @jonjohnson3372 9 лет назад +1

      I understand what you mean I heard motors and transformers give an angry buzz when faults like that happen
