Cathy, I watched this demo at 16 in school when you first uploaded it and I still watch it now. Your books were in my school library and I credit them as a reason I went on to keep painting. Thank you so much for sharing your work with us❤
Hi Cathy, loved the demo. I have attempted to paint a French chateau several times but not satisfied with the result and you have inspired me to give it a different treatment. Many thanks, Derek
Jim, it's the heavy Strathmore watercolor journal, and it just doesn't buckle much! Sometimes I use a watercolor block, usually Fabriano 140 lb., and I really don't have much problem with buckling in my journals, either...I haven't stretched paper in decades!
Great instructive demo. Creating clouds by blotting with tissue is quick, random and realistic. Randomized distribution of sienna with cellophane sheet on the building is another creative technique of producing realistic impression quickly without struggling with a brush. Using the sharp edge of the brush for creating light & dark branches of trees is impressive. Thanks for the many valuable techniques!
I love this video and have watched it a few times. While the whole painting is very well done, the shadows really make the picture come alive! I'll definitely use some of your techniques!
Thanks for sharing Cathy. It is informative and nicely done. Could you tell me the brand of the paint brush and a place where I can find it? I have tried looking and could not find it. Thanks.
Yes, I was hoping the see how you painted the windows also. Just love your style of creation and how surprised you are sometimes at the color that comes off your brush; tickles me. TFS
I'm sorry, I don't remember the brand for sure (maybe Daniel Smith!), but there are a lot of brands that make an aquarelle handle like this. I love them!
Cathy, why isn't your paper wrinkling and buckling when you wet it? I want to start watercolors in the worst way but now I'm confused because i don't see your paper taped down. Great work!
So at about 6:20 you use a pencil to draw branches from the wet trees: I assume the lead is retracted? I love the finished piece! It all works together beautifully. Yes, I have subscribed. ;-)
Hi Crystal, Have a look at Cathy's Mixing Greens video. If I remember rightly, at the end she makes some interesting black. My reply is a bit late but I've only just seen this texture video, Derek

Cate, this is stunning. Thanks for teaching us so many techniques. These will help improve my paintings so much. You are my favorite teacher!
I love the windows and shadows.
Thank you!
Subscribed. This is fantastic. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so much!
Do you have any words of advice for new watercolor painters? I feel like I am struggling with getting tone and contrast right
And as a result of bad tone and contrast, painting looks flat. I have a feeling getting tone and contrast right is just practice?
Always moved by your details in the painting~love it

Thank you so much! You will have SO much fun and satisfaction...and of course the occasional frustration, we all do!

Very nice job... Wow... approachable for newbies like myself too I think... thx!
awww I really wanted to see how you paint those windows, and that's the only thing you skipped.

Yes, it was! Sorry I just saw your question...
What is the palette you're using? It has great mixing areas.
It's an old Prang box I retrofitted with full pans and artist-grade paints!
Thank you! I thought it was larger than that as I could only see part of it in the video.
That was lovely, thanks so much for sharing. :o)
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it...
Very nice
gorgeous
Thanks
Do you not use black
thank you for your response
Only very rarely, actually.
