I would recommend buying more rather than less to avoid shipping costs being a problem (though note it can have a fishy smell which can permeate the pantry). 4 portions requires about 150 grams of dried, salted cod, so 3.5 pounds is enough for about 40 portions! A key aspect though is that salted cod takes more time to desalt even than Indonesian salted fish. So I would recommend desalting it 72 hours ahead of time and soaking it in the fridge while changing the water every 24 hours.
