- What happens when two Scrabble content creators meet over the board during a big game? You guys guessed it: great Scrabble content!
The matchup between myself and GM Will Anderson at the 2017 championships was no exception. Lots of awesome words, challenging decisions, and a mind-boggling pre-endgame make this a game and video you won't want to miss!

Great analysis! This was definitely a memorable game… I’m just lucky I didn’t have to contend with that pre-endgame situation. (edit: which you nailed, amazingly)
I had to pause the video for a bit when I realized the homophones for COX and BOLLIX 😭
I've finally figured out why I'm not going to be a top player. You need to have a name that is an actual word like Mack, Will, Alec (Sjoholm), Joey (Krafchick), or Josh (Sokol) - and of course, longtime legend - Joe (Edley).
Nigel has left the chat
Or Dings, which is even valid in both languages I play in 🙂
But you have a great anagram for your first and last name.
Spoiler blocker comment: New video type moment ❤
How do you get the top comment to do that?
An endgame all about COX and BOLLIX... lovely stuff
Reminds me of a word in Will's last video.
This video made me jism.
Legendary collab
In one of dweebs vids he calmly states "I have jism on my rack."
Got around to watching it, slight disappointment that it wasn't a new game still it will satisfy my will x mack desires for now. Since it was a cool game played by two cool players.
I’ve been waiting for this as soon as I heard about both of you
Yay, glad I finally got around to doing it -- been meaning to for a while!
20:21 I couldn't agree more!
Loving this modern legend on legend Scrabble word violence!
Excellent! Very well explained. I found it best to pause at 14:00 and spend time deciding what to do before hearing what Mack did.
Thanks Dave!
Swapping the blank and the natural L will make it a one point game if you draw the U, and maybe make it a little harder to spot APE. Not changing the theoretical win percentage though.
Ah yeah good point -- always good to keep an eye out for that, it feels like nothing but I've definitely seen it make the difference! And indeed here if the score were one point different it would be a significantly better play, which is super cool
I've never heard of "Case S" before, I guess I learnt something new today!
In Poker, it refers to the last of a given card in the deck. I guess the same in Scrabble, 4 aces, 4 S's...
Decent recap. Looking forward to more.
at what point in your scrabble career had you memorized all the 7s? 8s? finding CUSHATS immediately is crazy!
I don't remember exactly to be honest, though I studied 7s and 8s at the same pace so would've been more or less the same time I knew all of each. Probably I'd studied them all by the time I was 13 or 14?
Some great words there! Shame it was a TWL game as CSW would have allowed Will to play TOWNIER down from the O8.
I immediately considered "would it be possible to just fish off the X and go for an out bingo?", but the answer is no, it wouldn't--or rather, it would take a huge blunder on Will's part because you'd need to be threatening a bingo in two places and there were no open lanes for a seven so you'd need to simultaneously threaten an 8 through the first R in SCIRRHI (which has the added difficulty of having to create a valid two underlapping a P) _and_ through either the O or W in AVOW. Drawing either A or the E _would_ give you an 8 through the W, but of course Will would easily block that, and fishing off just the X would score considerably less because it's only working one way.
BOlLIX with the L and blank swithced only loses by 1 in case of a U draw 😉
B(E) on the top right sets up the O and threatens iXORA with an A draw, but it shouldn't be enough.
Yeah good point! One of those things that feels inconsequential but I've certainly seen it make the difference before, so always good to keep an eye out for it
I knew you knew him when you were 13 but not 11
My first game against him was when I was 11! He won that one, but I ws 3-2 against him as a 12 year old, so kinda redeemed myself 😃
I will admit to eating a cushat when I was very poor. The French call it Q shay.
What scrabble board do you and will use in your videos?
Great video! You might want to see if you can improve your audio setup, though; the sound is very echoey.
Is it possible to infer anything from SCHIRRI? Is that the best play he has regardless of what the last tile is?
Even if I could rule out a certain tile having been on his rack when he played it, he's drawing 6 new tiles and could easily have drawn said tile from the bag so I don't think an inference there carries much if any weight
🎉🎉😊😊
Play BR(O)LGA saving OX?
That's a cool idea! The problem though is I'm still drawing another tile, so I won't be going out with OX next turn. That means Will will still have two more turns, and he should be able to go out in two and outrun me pretty comfortably. If the bag were empty it would be an awesome plan, it's always good to consider swapping the order of a two-turn sequence when it looks like one way isn't working
Let me guess, its an AI profile of will Anderson and not really Will
Haha no it's definitely the man himself!
Clash of the Titans!
The CUSHAT turn is super interesting
Indeed! I still think I'd bingo if I had to do it again, and a sim does agree narrowly, but the plays are all surprisingly close and all have merit
Incredible end game. Kudos to you and Will for both nailing it. Thank you for the great video.
