The fact that a lot of the scenes in Elf are unscripted and improvised is one of the many reasons why it's one of my all time favorite Christmas movies!!!
I don't know if you've watched "Spirited" with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. Will is at a Christmas party, looks at someone wearing the Elf costume and points to the person saying. "That's a horrible costume!" I started laughing. Was pretty cool they added that into the movie.
You may all be pleased to hear that they’re very likely currently filming number 2 in our locality. We’ve had film crews in our village for weeks (we’re about 5 miles from the original destination) and Cameron Diaz was seen in our local town last week having a drink in one of the pubs. I have everything crossed for The Holiday 2!
So glad you included White Christmas! For those of you who haven't watched it, it's hilarious!!! Another unscripted moment in It's A Wonderful Life was when he cried on the bridge. The actor was so recovering emotionally after the World War, and started crying sitting that scene.
Elf being mostly unscripted just gives the movie more chaos than it already has. Also, the little girl believing her costar is actually Santa is adorable.
You know when that happened it was going through Carey's mind "we could do 100 takes to make the stuff stay and it would fail, try to pull it away 1 time and it's opposite day
According to my information, the “It’s a Wonderful Life” ad lib WAS the Uncle Billy actor. He just improvised the line when the equipment dropped and crashed
That was my understanding as well. Also, the reason that Jimmy Stewart kissed the woman at the bank window was cuz she was told to make up the amount she told him in order to surprise him. So, that was technically ad-libbed as well. It’s kinda disappointing that this video got these things not all way correct.
I absolutely love that scene in Elf where Buddy yells SANTA at the top of his lungs and the scene in Home Alone where Kevin screams because of the after shave on his face!! classic Christmas movie scenes of all time. LOL.
“Elf” is one of my top 5 all time favorite Christmas movies that I ALWAYS HAVE TO WATCH around Christmas and now knowing that almost everything was improvised makes me love it even more! Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau are complete geniuses!!
Yeah, it does an excellent job of combining respectful accuracy to the original story, well-timed Muppets humor, and a number of lovely earworms. Turning a classic Christmas story into a Muppets musical should not have worked as well as it did, but they somehow managed to pull it off brilliantly.
You rightfully put Elf as number 1, but my favourite ad lib from that movie was when Will was crossing a street in NY and sees a man who looks like Santa from behind, so he yells "Santa" while running up and hugging the man. The scene was ad libbed and the Santa look alike was actually a random guy crossing the street
It"s a Wonderful Life" - The crash of Uncle Billy was caused by a grip but the Uncle Billie actor stayed in character and said the unscripted line. Stewart also stayed in character and responded. It was kept in the movie and the grip was given $10 extra in his pay packet.
I have been a big fan of "White Christmas" for as long as I can remember. Let's just say that my older brother was not. He met my sister-in-law because she was my best friend in high school. She and I were in choir together. We would sing "Sisters" and run giggling away from his outraged bellows. They have been gone for quite a while now but hearing that tune always makes me smile. 😄 Merry Christmas to all. 🎄🎶🎅
I heard that the clattering for the scene with Uncle Billy in "It's a Wonderful Life" was because he walked into some equipment and called out the iconic line before resuming his singing to sell the part of drunkenly staggering off into the distance. xD
Another unscripted part in A Christmas Story is when Ralphie was standing in line. The kid with the aviator goggles was just a shopper, and the line and reaction were genuine, and they kept it in the movie.
Except it was. They got the story slightly wrong. That was Thomas Mitchell reacting to a crewmember dropping some empty film canisters. The crew person thought he was going to be fired for ruining the shot, and would not have called out making it worse. Instead director Frank Capra gave the man a bonus for enhancing the scene.
9:47 Another unscripted “Home Alone” scene I cannot imagine being without is when Macaulay Culkin was just “hamming it up” and came up with this iconic line: “You guys give up or are you thirsty for more?” (Right after the two bandits slipped on the toy cars) The crew loved it so much they broke into fits of laughter and decided to keep it in. (Source: 2010 Blu-Ray release audio commentary)
In It's a Wonderful Life that was actor Thomas Mitchell as Uncle Billy saying "I'm alright." He, being a real pro improvised it on the fly when the crew member accidentally created the crashing sound.
I could be wrong about this, but I believe George C. Scott improvised Scrooge's comment to the Ghost of Christmas Future, "You're devilish hard to have a conversation with" in the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol
Top 3 (In my opinion): 1. Kevin's iconic scream 2. Much of the Movie (Elf) 3. The Grinch's Magic Trick These are some of the best Christmas movies of all time. My reasons of my order here, Kevin's scream is the most iconic scene in any Christmas because it is so damn funny, and it just squeezes ahead of Elf, even despite having most of the movie unscripted and Will Ferrell's performance is just so damn good I couldn't resist, although the Grinch's unscripted scenes are also good, not to mention the movie was great itself, so there you have it.
During the scene when Emma Thompson ‘s character finds out her husband is being unfaithful in Love Actually I wanted to reach through the screen and strangle Alan Rickman’s character. My other favorite unscripted scenes are from A Christmas Story, How The Grinch Stole Christmas & Elf.
If it weren’t for “A Christmas Story,” my family would not have our unique tradition of eating Chinese takeout at my grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve every year
I'm actually not all that surprised about the muppet unscripted moments. The entire job of a muppeteer is make-believe coupled with anonymity, so it's totally unsurprising that they cut loose. Also, I've seen the outtake clip here on YT between comedian John Oliver (Last Week Tonight) and Cookie Monster. It's hilarious, and John breaks several times!
I’m not a fan of Love Actually. But I am a fan of the two. As well as Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, The Holiday, Muppet Carol and a Christmas Story
Another ad-lib that wasn't in your list! When walking down the street Will comes by a guy dressed as Santa. The reaction from the guy was left in the movie!
I was watching the Holiday last week for the first time actually. And I didn’t expect to enjoy it. The Chinese restaurant scene in A Christmas Story is a bit stereotypical. And no way about the Sisters scene or Kevin’s scream in Home Alone.
How Fantastic. I love Christmas movies.:-)🙂😀The Dinner in the Chinese restaurant is one of my fave scenes.:-O:-):-D😀😲😀I have not seen all of Love Actually.only part of the film.😲😞I want to get the Elf Trivia game for Christmas.:-)😀

Jim Carrey going back to knock everything off the table is easily the funniest moment of this film to me.
Hearing The Holiday get called a “holiday classic” makes me feel validated. I get told I’m weird for it being my favorite Christmas Movie.
Me too!!! One of my fave holiday films that I watch every year.
I love it
I just watched it for the first time last week.

Two equally wonderful Xmas movies

Hello Lilian
How are you doing today?
Some of the greatest, most iconic Christmas films of all time.
I absolutely love that scene in Elf where Buddy yells SANTA at the
top of his lungs and the scene in Home Alone where Kevin screams
because of the after shave on his face!! classic Christmas movie
scenes of all time. LOL.
Bill Murray falling on his way out of the restaurant on SCROOGED should be on here. That is always gonna be funny.
“Elf” is one of my top 5 all time favorite Christmas movies that I ALWAYS HAVE TO WATCH around Christmas and now knowing that almost everything was improvised makes me love it even more! Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau are complete geniuses!!
The Muppet Christmas Carol is definitely one of the best adaptations of the Charles Dickens classic. And the casting of Michael Caine is the best too
Yeah, it does an excellent job of combining respectful accuracy to the original story, well-timed Muppets humor, and a number of lovely earworms. Turning a classic Christmas story into a Muppets musical should not have worked as well as it did, but they somehow managed to pull it off brilliantly.

They actually started filming Elf not long after Will left SNL. Many locals would see him talking around in an elf costume and ask if he was okay.
That's hilarious

I named my orange tabby cat Buddy after my favorite line from Elf.
"Buddy the Elf. What's your favorite color?"
In It's a Wonderful Life that was actor Thomas Mitchell as Uncle Billy saying "I'm alright." He, being a real pro improvised it on the fly when the crew member accidentally created the crashing sound.

I didn’t know the singing in a store moment was unscripted. Usually it’s Jim Carrey who’s doing improv not Will Ferrel!
I think the random guy in red is the best moment in Elf
Not surprised that much of Elf was improvised.

White Christmas, It's A Wonderful Life, and Love Actually are glorious choices!
I’m not a fan of Love Actually. But I am a fan of the two. As well as Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, The Holiday, Muppet Carol and a Christmas Story
The aftershave scream
The best Christmas movie on this list is "It's a Wonderful Life"!
To me that title belongs to Miracle on 34th Street
Natalie Wood was gorgeous even as a child
