I _love_ this piece. One of my favorite Joplin rags. So upbeat and cheerful.

Composed in 1909, and one of his more upbeat rags, especially considering the fact his music was becoming more classy.

This one is upbeat and classy. The melodies ring with the nobility and grace of his finest works, and every melody is excellent, IMO. What he does in the last two themes is remarkable, particularly the way he brings in and out the augmented 6th (flat 6th) chord in the D theme. He sets it up so it changes mood and key in a classical manner, although he flows into it naturally, but when it flows OUT, the tonality he implies seems to sound like we’re in a THIRD DIFFERENT KEY at the end of the theme and not just back in the home key of C! It’s pretty incredible. When I heard Joshua Rifkin’s recording of it, the hair on the back of my neck stood on end, and when properly played, this piece still has that magic. By FAR, Joplin was the most Classical of all the old ragtime composers (whose work we can hear today), in the best way possible.
