  • A method actor told Clint Eastwood "My artistic process can't be rushed" after showing up three hours late for the third consecutive day. What Clint did next - in front of 75 crew members - became one of the most legendary firings in Hollywood history and ended that actor's career permanently.
This is the true story of professionalism, respect, and the price of confusing self-indulgence with artistry.

If the call time is 6 a.m. and you need 3 hours of meditation to prepare, then you need to start your "artistic" preparation at 3 a.m.

I was in San Francisco in the mid 70’s for a business training program. I was in the hotel’s bar/restaurant for lunch. That is where I met Mr. Eastwood briefly. He and a friend walked by where I and one of the training participants was having lunch. That guy briefly stopped Mr Eastwood and made a compliment on Mr. Eastwood’s work. Mr. Eastwood was friendly and said thank you in that quiet voice of his.

I loved watching TV shows like Rawhide and Cheyenne and Bonanza. People like Clint Eastwood, Clint Walker and the men from the Ponderosa were my role models. Thanks to them I went on to join the Australian Army and live a good life. I think the world would be a better place if we brought back more westerns on TV

Like most things in Hollywood, American Westerns were a fantasy. Ironically, Unforgiven was notable for, among other things it's realism. I suspect realistic Westerns wouldn't make it passed the censors. So, what we were given a was a made up world bearing little resemble to life back then. The US still suffers from the false nostalgia created by the American Western.

In college, once, two students sat in class not doing any work. The professor asked why, and their response was, " I don't feel inspired." The professor told them that when they get a job, some day they need to be ready to work. That or get a job in bookkeeping or clerical. I could not help overheating the conversation and did my best to keep my head down, but he saw the slight smile on my face. He asked me about it, and I quietly said for over ten years, that is the kind of work I did. I'm now very happy to be learning a new craft.

Tom Hanks had the story that Eastwood treats actors like horses. On the set of Rawhide the producers had rotating directors. This was the late Fifties early Sixties and these were old school John Ford type directors. They were loud and some insisted on reshooting scenes over and over. We they did record a scene, the directors would yell “CUT” or “ACTION” loudly. It’s a Western with horses around them. The yelling freaked the horses. Eastwood hated that. So when he has the actors start a scene he quietly says “Go on”. When the scene is over he says, “Okay, that’s enough”. He never does a repeat shoot. There are actors, Matt Damon was one, that wanted a do over of a scene. You can’t argue with Mr. Clint Eastwood, Academy Award Winner for acting, directing and producing. His credentials are more impressive than even Spielberg, Lucas or Ron Howard.

AI nonsense. Clint Eastwood didn't fire an actor from Unforgiven; rather, he fought to cast Gene Hackman (who played Little Bill Daggett) after Hackman initially declined due to concerns about the film's violence, and Eastwood also had to persuade Richard Harris (English Bob) to join, but no major actor was fired by Eastwood from the core cast during production. Eastwood did fire a director in an earlier film (The Outlaw Josey Wales) however. 😬

Actor: Frances Fisher (who played Strawberry Alice, the leader of the prostitutes in the film).
The firing was directly related to Clint Eastwood's famous efficiency and no-nonsense directing style. Fisher, who was relatively new to film at the time (having come from television and theatre), was reportedly preparing for an emotional scene by attempting to get "into the moment" privately. She asked for time and for others to be quiet on the set so she could focus.

Actor: Frances Fisher (who played Strawberry Alice, the leader of the prostitutes in the film).
Reason: The firing was directly related to Clint Eastwood's famous efficiency and no-nonsense directing style. Fisher, who was relatively new to film at the time (having come from television and theatre), was reportedly preparing for an emotional scene by attempting to get "into the moment" privately. She asked for time and for others to be quiet on the set so she could focus.

It seems as though this would be a relatively easy thing to look up to check its veracity? What was the actor’s name? What contract did he receive, which was then cancelled? I’m a huge fan of Clint, but he doesn’t need falsified self-aggrandizement. He is literally the spaghetti westerns iconic hero of an entire era. Clint doesn’t need to build himself up, by tearing someone else down.

Worked Crafty in the SLC area in the late 90s. Always early, early, early.
. . . And with plenty of hot coffee and triple the number of chocolate doughnuts (enough for even the "extras" days out of my own pocket).
What amazed me most was how many of the lower echalon staff always had their opinion of the "proper" way I was to do my job. I only took my instructions from the Line Producer. And I was smart enough to quietly report to him when an assistant transportation jerk or a cable puller insist I follow his demands.
The wanna-bees did not hire me or sign my time slip.
My job was to keep that table full and pristine. . . PERIOD!
