The thing is that most of our culture was originally just English culture transplanted somewhere else to the point that we started a rebellion because of a tax on tea. Eventually as we achieved independence and moved further away from the coast it began to change. This change was influenced by immigrants around the world adding their own cultural traditions that merged and split over time. You also have to understand that America is a huge country and just the state of Alaska is bigger than Europe as a whole. The various distances between places meant that every region or even city had a unique culture with separate values and traditions. Until after the Civil War it wasn't even clear that the Central Government was more important than the states. We have so many people in so many places that it doesn't surprise me that you have a misconception of our culture. The internet and news only show the diluted surface of our country as they do all countries.
