I'm a huge fan of Ritchie with Rainbow and of course Deep Purple. I saw him with DP at Westphalia hall in Dortmund, Germany 1975. At this time i was 15years old and it was the Stormbringer tour. A few das later Ritchie left DP and founded the awesome band Rainbow with Ronnie . When i think back Deep Purple in Rock was a really impact for me. Before i heard The Bee Gees and all the other stuff, and then,oh man, Speed King with the unbelievable intro. That changed my life forever. Of course i own all DP and Rainbow releases. For me Ritchie is my favorite guitar hero of all time. He never plays a guitar solo twice on stage. Every gig is different and the battles with Jon Lord are legendary. My favorite Rainbow song hmm it's absolute difficult to say. There are so many excellent tunes but i think Kill The King is a good choice. The power and dynamic of that song shows the strenght. Long Live Rock And Roll is also my favorite album by Rainbow. The voice, the guitar work with stunning solos by Ritchie and the sounding blows you in the truest sense of the word. 👍🥇🤘🤘
Hard task to pick 10 John. One from each vocalist ; Dio - 16th Century greensleeves ; Bonnet - Lost in Hollywood ; JLT - Death alley driver ; Doogie White - Wolf to the moon and i'll throw one in from Ronnie Romero - Waiting for a sign. Out of there entire catalogue there are probably 5 songs that dont cut it. Cheers and long live rock n roll.
Good list. I have to say my favorite is Man on the Silver Mountain from On Stage. The power in Ronnie's voice in the reprise "You're all the man...", then Cozy's power, then the riff, definitely a magic moment in music.
Yes. That's great. Lately you've been spoiling me with your choice of topics, John. My Rainbow Top 10: 10. "Street of Dreams" 9. "Tarot Woman" 8. "Death Alley Driver" 7. "L.A. Connection" 6. "Since You Been Gone" 5. "I Surrender" 4. "Spotlight Kid" 3. "Temple of the King" 2. "Kill the King" 1. "Stargazer" My honorable mentions: "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Catch the Rainbow", "Ariel", "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll", "Gates of Babylon", "Lost in Hollywood", "Bring On the Night", "Fire Dance" , "Eyes of the World" Did you know: Tony Carey was kicked out of the band by Blackmore because he had a heroin problem. At the same time, his drug connection broke off and he went through a cold turkey. Ronnie sings about it in "L. A. Connection". @@LairoftheAlchemist Thanks ! Hey man, I'm watching you on The Hudson Valley Squares right now. You are doing a very good job. Hope to see you more often in Pete's channel now.
Loved this video! Rainbow is my all time favorite band and I love seeing another fan's take. So much so it inspired me to make my own top 10 list. It's really interesting to see how different how lists compare, as to your point each of Rainbow's eras was uniquely different. While songs across all eras made the list, there's probably a few surprises here. I do not have a song from Rising in my top 10, even though the Dio era is my favorite. I also feel Stranger In Us All is one of the strongest Rainbow albums, though most people don't know of it's existence. The best way I can describe it is combine the best elements of the Dio and Turner eras and you get this album. 1 Man on the Silver Mountain - Dio - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 2 Catch the Rainbow (live version) - Dio - On Stage 3 Street of Dreams (Blackmore's Night version) - Turner - Village Lantern 4 Too Late for Tears - White - Stranger In Us All 5 Lost in Hollywood - Bonnet - Down to Earth 6 Hunting Humans (Insatiable) - White - Stranger In Us All 7 Stone Cold - Turner - Straight Between the Eyes 8 Long Live Rock'n Roll - Dio - Long Live Rock'n Roll 9 Love's No Friend - Bonnet - Down to Earth 10 Sixteenth Century Greensleeves - Dio - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Thanks again for the video - I would love to see your top 10 for Dio and Blackmore's Night!
Thanks and your list is really cool. Interesting that you don’t have anything from Rising, I agree with you though about “stranger in us All’ that is a really great album. Call that you added “lost in Hollywood“ and. “Hunting humans“ both great songs. They are such a good band it’s hard to pick a top 10.

Very tough one. This is my Top 10, at least at the moment: 10. Lady Of The Lake 9. Run With The Wolf 8. In The Eyes Of The World 7. Lost In Hollywood 6. The Shed 5. Man On The Silver Mountain 4. Gates Of Babylon 3. Kill The King 2. A Light In The Black 1. Stargazer
My Favourite ten 1. Stargazer/ 2 Gates of Babylon /3 Eyes of the World / 4 Light in the black / 5 Kill The King/ 6 Lost in Hollywood/ 7 Death alley Driver/ 8 Danger Zone/ 9 Black Masquerade/ 10 Cant let you go. So, so difficult to narrow down ten favourites of one of my favourite bands of all time. The list may change next week depending on what mood I’m in and what I'm listening to at the time however I don’t think the top 3 will ever change. It was an absolute toss up between Stargazer and Gates of Babylon - Stargazer gets the nod due to Cozy Powell’s intro - which for whatever reason wasn’t done live. Hard to separate the next 5 as well -ok Light in the Black wasn’t a favourite of Ronnie’s but Blackmore and Carey’s solos set the blueprint for most of not all power and speed metal guitar/synth interplay and while Kill the King is the bastard child of light in the black its just too good not to have it near the top. Eyes of the World made me a huge fan of Down to Earth and Lost in Hollywood and the underrated Danger Zone cemented my love for it. Death Alley Driver for the reasons you mentioned is my favourite JLT era song. Black Masquerade is my favourite on Stanger in us All - I love the acoustic guitar interlude - a harbinger I guess of what was to come?- and I think Stranger in us all is very underappreciated. Can’t Let You Go sneaks in at no 10 as when I was thinking about which of the numerous tracks not yet included to add in I found myself humming it - it’s also got a great opening organ introduction. So many honourable mentions there’s too many to list, however I’ve always had a soft spot for Rainbow Eyes, Self Portrait and Temple of the King and Magic off of Difficult to Cure - it was something a bit different for them at the time and really suits JLT’s singing; I much prefer the On Stage versions of Man on the Silver Mountain, 16th Century Greensleeves and Still I’m Sad to the first album versions which sound a bit plodding polite and less energetic. Also a shame Weiss Heim wasn’t included on Down to Earth - it could replace All Night Long as far as I’m concerned as I don’t ever need to hear that one again - Since you been gone on the other hand I don’t mind still hearing.
Love Ritchie Blackmore and rainbow. Great analysis per usual. I would’ve added man silver mountain and probably black masquerade to my list but it’s a great list with epic songs left and right.
10. Catch The Rainbow 9. Long Live Rock 'N' Roll 8. The Tample Of The King 7. Sixteenth Centure Greensleeves 6. The Shed (Subtle) 5. Tarot Woman 4. Man On The Silver Mountian 3. Starstruck 2. Gates Of Babylon 1. Stargazer
1. A light in the Black 2. Stargazer 3. Still I am Sad ( live version) 4. Gates of Babylon 5. Temple of the King 6. Street of dreams 7. Since you’ve been gone 8. I surrender 9. Tarot Woman 10. Kill the King.
Great top 10 list from you as usual! But you forgot my absolute favorite song of all time "Man on the silver mountain" I remember when I saw DIO on last in line tour and they played it and I actually think I got tears in my eyes. 🥲 Otherwise I would also give an honorable mention to "All night long" with the great Graham Bonnet! 🎙🎛
1. Kill The King 2. Light In The Black 3. Temple Of The King 4. Stargazer 5. Cant Happen Here 6. Long Live Rock n Roll 7. Drinking With The Devil 8. Run With The Wolf 9. Jealous Lover 10. Gates Of Babylon
Great to see Spotlight Kid firmly in the top ten! A great, great track from the Joe Lynn Turner era. Gates of Babylon at the top gets a huge thumbs up from me 😀 I love all Rainbow as well, but my top ten ends up comprising of only the Joe and Dio era... 10. Magic 09. The Temple Of The King 08. Tearin' Out My Heart ( this power ballad still gives me goosebumps, used to listen to it a lot in my teens around 1985-87 - memories of heartbreak that now gives me a huge hit of nostalgia... ) 07. Tarot Woman 06. Sixteenth Century Greensleeves 05. Can't Happen here 04. A Light In The Black 03. Spotlight Kid 02. Kill The King 01. Gates Of Babylon ( my perennial #1 the way Stargazer is for many fans - and I don't even have Stargazer in my top ten...! I do like it a lot, but it was never a huge favorite of mine for some reason. )
Interesting to see that stargazers not in your top 10. I also love “tearing out my heart“ the guitar solo and that is incredible. Can’t happen here is another good one. So many great songs to choose from.
@@LairoftheAlchemist The first time I heard Stargazer, I immediately thought it was a bit like Kashmir, very moody and brooding. But Kashmir is my fav Zeppelin song so go figure why I never got into Stargazer as much as most people... It's a heavy song but also fairly slow paced and it stays in that same pace for the duration of the track, maybe that's the problem? Believe me, I've tried to come up with reasons for my relatively more lukewarm reaction to the track, hahah. Anyway, yeah, the Rainbow catalog is chock full of great songs, my honourable mentions list would be as long as the actual top ten 😄
Nice one! Love that you’ve gone across eras and singers. My list would be so so Dio skewed. Going to revisit some of those Joe Lyn and Graham Bonnet albums. Thanks man 🤘🏽...
Interesting list. Nice to see someone who appreciates all the eras like myself. Ronnie James Dio-era is my favorite but I like all the records under the name of Rainbow just like you. I also like most things Dio ever did but Rainbow is my favorite amongst them all...I would definitely liked to seen him on atleast two albums more before working with others. Ariel is a good pick! I hold Deep Purple as perhaps my favorite band but I think I would put Stranger in Us All above The House of Blue Light, Slaves and Masters along with ... The Battles Rages On that came before it. A good end to the hardrocking days of Blackmore.
I’ve always enjoyed all areas of the band since the beginning. Stranger in us All is sort of a forgotten album in someways. Came out in the 90s when this stuff wasn’t fashionable.
Not sure I could do a top ten since they have so many great songs and lots of different styles. Will need to re-listen to the Graham Bonet disc because I definitely didn't care for tat one back in the day.
It was a hard list to make, yeah, check that album out again there’s a lot of cool stuff on it. People got a little turned off from “all night long“ and “since you’ve been gone“ those were really melodic radio and it turned some people off but there’s a lot of great stuff on the album.
Great list, I agree on many of your choices! As usual, your love for these songs comes through loud and clear. These days my favorite Rainbow album's gotta be "Down to Earth", somehow it's outgrown even the Dio records, which have been my perennial go to era for Ritchie's band. I think making a top 10 at this moment would result in like 4 Bonnet songs, and even I can see it's a bit biased!
Rainbow is my favorite band, Blackmore is my favorite guitar player, and to choose 3 songs is not so simple. But these ones are mine :1. Long Live Rock N Roll , 2. All Night Long , 3. Can't Let You Go
Hi, I'm new here. I've only just found this channel after watching The Hudson Valley Squares: Favorite Albums from 1979. My top 10 Rainbow songs list would be incredibly different, but I definitely agree with your picks for both your favourite guitarist and singer.
@@LairoftheAlchemist Cheers. I've only watched this Rainbow vid for now, but I really enjoyed your contribution to Pete's show. Also, I have to say your channel has an absolutely marvellous name.
Great stuff man. You sure know your Rainbow. I would have put Man on the Silver Mountain and No Release over Spot Light Kid and Death Alley driver. Only because neither of those songs bring in anything new even though Spot Light Kid has amazing instrumental stuff. You are bang on about Gates of Babylon. Not enough people talk about it
Thanks man! I know, I’m getting close to 1000. Will be lining up some special things when I hit 1000, I’m also approaching the one year anniversary of the channel.
You can flip a coin between Gates of Babylon and Stargazer. They are the easy songs to pick for the top two. I think it depends what day of the week it is for number one.
Man on the Silver Mountain Stargazer Kill the King Long Live Rock N Roll Eyes of the World Self Portrait Cant Happen Here Spotlight Kid Death Alley Driver Power
My top 10 Rainbow songs are: 10: Death Alley Driver 9: Eyes of the World 8: Man On The Silver Mountain 7: Tarot Woman 6: Lost In Hollywood 5: Can’t Happen Here 4: Lady of the Lake 3: Gates of Babylon 2: Kill the King 1: Stargazer
I love the groove of “Jealous Lover” and I agree “Death Alley Driver” is Highway Star part 2.”Still I am Sad” “Kill the King” their live version of “Mistreated” and how about “Lady of the Lake” and “Catch the Rainbow” and it was a mainstream hit but “Street of Dreams” is sadly Beautiful... great band !!! Oh and remember their MTV Saturday night concert??!!!
Great list, I'd have put together a very similar list if I made one, especially if I was true to my Rainbow taste throughout the 35 years of listening to this excellent band. Fascinating that Gates of Babylon, which to me sounds like a rock disco tune very influenced by Abba and Boney M, reigns att place no 1.
1) Stargazer 2) Ariel 3) Stone Cold 4) Black Masquerade 5) Hunting Humans 6) Lost in Hollywood 7) Kill The King 8) Street Of Dreams 9) Temple Of The King 10) Since You've Been Gone
I love comparing Stargazer with Kashmir, which I consider have many similarities. Middle eastern motif, over 8 minutes, top 10 guitarists, drummers and vocalists, and both bands at the height of their powers and firing on all cylinders.
I love your choices. These are some of my favorite Rainbow tracks too. My only issue is your pronunciation of Tarot in regards to Tarot Woman. The t at the end is silent. Otherwise awesome choices.
My 10 fav Rainbow songs would have Do You Close Your Eyes from Rising. The electric opening to the 50s homage of Ooh na na na na na na to the power beat of Cozy and Jimmy. It's a hip moving rock and roll song if there ever was one. R.I.P. RJD. CP JB.
Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, kill the King, Light in the black, Eyes of the world, Eyes of fire, Tarot woman, I Surrender, Death Alley Driver, Stone cold.
@@LairoftheAlchemist it's in my top 10 but based upon the other comments I'm deep in the minority. Can you do a top 10 of BOC songs with honorable mentions please?

Not sure I could do a top ten since they have so many great songs and lots of different styles. Will need to re-listen to the Graham Bonet disc because I definitely didn't care for tat one back in the day.
It was a hard list to make, yeah, check that album out again there’s a lot of cool stuff on it. People got a little turned off from “all night long“ and “since you’ve been gone“ those were really melodic radio and it turned some people off but there’s a lot of great stuff on the album.
@@LairoftheAlchemist Your wish is my command! :)
You hit the bull's eye! Love you!
Thanks!
I agree: gates of babylon takes you out of mind.... Incredible and the soloooooooo
Yeah, I agree. An amazing solo!
Thanks, it is a really great album. Everything he sings on I dig he always elevates the songwriting.
@@LairoftheAlchemist I'm a massive Graham fan myself! He's managed to always bring something interesting to the table, a true great.
Rainbow is my favorite band, Blackmore is my favorite guitar player, and to choose 3 songs is not so simple. But these ones are mine :1. Long Live Rock N Roll , 2. All Night Long , 3. Can't Let You Go
Great picks...Can't let you Go is fantastic.
Funny moment about Street of dreams. Thank you for another interesting top ten video :)
You’re welcome.
Hi, I'm new here. I've only just found this channel after watching The Hudson Valley Squares: Favorite Albums from 1979. My top 10 Rainbow songs list would be incredibly different, but I definitely agree with your picks for both your favourite guitarist and singer.
Thanks and I hope you enjoy the channel.
@@LairoftheAlchemist Cheers. I've only watched this Rainbow vid for now, but I really enjoyed your contribution to Pete's show. Also, I have to say your channel has an absolutely marvellous name.
Totally agree about Down To Earth...so underrated.
I agree..it has a lot of great songs on it.
Not enough people talk about it
great you put Ariel on the list - underrated track if there ever was one.
I love Hunting Humans (insatiable)...
I agree! And hunting humans is a great one also.
@@LairoftheAlchemist absolutely. Especially the live version
Nice one. Bavarian String Ensemble on Gates of Babylon, excellent use of strings w/o being overdone, an often difficult application in rock music 🤘🏽
It's epic for sure!!
Love the passion. Great list. Stargazer wins number 1 for me
Thanks!, My number one and number two were basically interchangeable.
Le mie favorite canzoni dei rainbow.......TUTTE 😎
Yeah
Excellent discussion 😀
Thanks
Great video! Only 10 subscribers away from 1,000, Congratulations!
Thanks man! I know, I’m getting close to 1000. Will be lining up some special things when I hit 1000, I’m also approaching the one year anniversary of the channel.
@@LairoftheAlchemist you're welcome. 991 and 992 subs may have been two of my friends, I sent your Yngwie video to them today.
@@excelsiormoviereviews Thanks man!! I appreciate the support!
Nice man, I was hoping you would say Gates of Babylon when you picked up LLRAR.
You can flip a coin between Gates of Babylon and Stargazer. They are the easy songs to pick for the top two. I think it depends what day of the week it is for number one.
I know, it’s basically impossible to pick they are both such great songs.
Man on the Silver Mountain
Stargazer
Kill the King
Long Live Rock N Roll
Eyes of the World
Self Portrait
Cant Happen Here
Spotlight Kid
Death Alley Driver
Power
Can’t happen here is a great one and almost made my list.
My top 10 Rainbow songs are:
10: Death Alley Driver
9: Eyes of the World
8: Man On The Silver Mountain
7: Tarot Woman
6: Lost In Hollywood
5: Can’t Happen Here
4: Lady of the Lake
3: Gates of Babylon
2: Kill the King
1: Stargazer
Great list!
1) Stargazer
2) Ariel
3) Stone Cold
4) Black Masquerade
5) Hunting Humans
6) Lost in Hollywood
7) Kill The King
8) Street Of Dreams
9) Temple Of The King
10) Since You've Been Gone
Great list and cool to see "Since You've Been Gone" on the list.
My favorite are Kill the king, Stone Cold, Run With Wolf, L. A connection, Tite Squeeze, Man On Silver Mountain, Stargazer
MAN ON A SILVER MOUNTAIN!!!×10
I love comparing Stargazer with Kashmir, which I consider have many similarities. Middle eastern motif, over 8 minutes, top 10 guitarists, drummers and vocalists, and both bands at the height of their powers and firing on all cylinders.
I always think of them as very similar also.
I love your choices. These are some of my favorite Rainbow tracks too. My only issue is your pronunciation of Tarot in regards to Tarot Woman. The t at the end is silent. Otherwise awesome choices.
Thanks!
Joe Lynn Turner is my favourite singer.
I agree with everything on your list except, I would replace Street of dreams with A Light in the Black
A light in the black almost made my list.
All my 10 would b from dio era.
I’m a fan of all the eras but if I had to pick I would choose the Dio era.
Great list!!..."Eyes of Fire" almost made it on mine.
@@LairoftheAlchemist It's a great song, so hard to narrow it down to 10.
What are your thoughts on Rainbow Eyes?
Absolutely love it...almost made my list. One of my favorite RJD performances.
Nice channel
Thanks! I’m a subscriber and big fan of your channel.
Where did Stone Cold fall in your list John? Top 20 or 30?
That would probably make my top 15, it almost made it onto my list.
@@LairoftheAlchemist it's in my top 10 but based upon the other comments I'm deep in the minority.
Can you do a top 10 of BOC songs with honorable mentions please?
@@LairoftheAlchemist by the check you out being on Hudson Valley Squares! Great show.
Stargazer e' un opera rock
Yeah
cant believe you left out "lady of the lake" and not a single track from "on stage"..... blues, snake charmer, king of the silver mountain! street of dreams is dreadful. just horrible. at that point everybody saw what kind of business journey was getting and they all wanted a piece of the action. rainbow has to have ronnie. ritchie shoulf have ended and renamed rhe outfit without him. he should have gone "jeff beck" and just call it a solo project after dio and cozy left
I didn't want to do any live stuff and I do like Lady of the Lake but it was a tough top ten to make...so many great songs.
