@@TheFrontyer you don't need to approach people to socialise a puppy the best form of socialisation is just being able to observe the world and not be stressed out while doing so

Thanks for doing this series, it's really informative to see these techniques used in a real world setting. I know a lot of people ask you questions about balanced training and/or corrections but where do you draw the line with restraint versus correction in terms of collars, harnesses, etc. what are your thoughts on head collars? have you ever worked with a dog that found being restrained by say a harness so aversive it could have been likened to a correction/ punishment (I would guess this would only be in cased of extreme anxiety)?
I have learned so much by watching your videos and how Inertia respond to your commands. You are an inspiration. ❤️ Zak, for me, you are the best trainer in United States
Inertia is adorable when she backs up! Inertia is a lovely dog. I've learned so much from watching you train Inertia! I'm 9 years old and ready for my new puppy! He comes in July!
I love this series and your methods! We are following along with Inertia's training as we raise our new 10 week old pup. We are struggling with her jumping and climbing out of her pen, though. I don't want to just make it climb-proof, and rewarding her when she sits isn't completely stopping the behavior. Some recommendations online are to shake the pen and"scare" her right when she starts, but I don't think that's effective nor our training style. I also don't want to ignore the behavior by just covering the pen. We watched the videos for jumping on people but would love any advice on pen jumping! Thanks :)
Thank you so much Zak! Inertia and you have taught me so much! I’ve watched your videos for over a year now! We will be adopting a chocolate Labrador on Saturday! Now me and my family know exactly what to do with her thanks to your amazing videos! I’ve watched Inertia’s vids since day 1. She was a beautiful puppy, and now is gorgeously well trained adult!😊😊
His techniques wont work. Trust me I tried them with my highly reactive rescue as well. He was reactive to anything that moved. Cars, bikes, birds, squirrels, dogs, people, kids. HD is now a cardiac alert service which he could never be due to his behavior before
@@katczu first before anything I obedience trained him an even off leash trained him with recall and an off leash heel so that I had control. Then I used a training collar to correct him every time he reacted to something then when he didnt react I praised him greatly and fed him very yummy treats. Also I did desensitization at the same time so I would fo very minor and gentle flooding to to that. For example I would sit outside of the pet store and in the beginning he wasnt even allowed to look at another dog so when one would pass and he looked I marked with no and stimed h the m on his working level on the e collar wich is a level the dog can barely feel at all. ONLY go up if you use the working level and they continue to stare hard and only go up VERY LITTLE. If you have to go up more you are doing too much too soon. He then started to become neutral to dogs and people and I worked his obedience in public like down town with people and dogs and cars nearby so it helped him to have a not caring, neutral attitude toward the stimuli even more sense he was around it so much and trains around it. Then when we go tdd to that neutral point I started counter conditioning and some BAT to change his emotional response AGAIN to think they were a good thing! It is important to get your dog to the neutral state of mind before getting them to have a positive association. Because it is hard to get them from one extreme state of mind to another. For example, If you were really afraid of dogs it would be unreasonable for someone to try and get you to think they were good all of a sudden. You would have to be around them at a comfortable distance to realize that "hey, they are not trying to kill me!" Gradually getting more confident and comfortable around them and getting closer and closer to them and thinking they aren't so bad. Then someone paid u a dollar bill every time you saw a dog you would start to think dogs are awesome! Makes sense? Then I started controlled and careful socialization. AVOID DOG PARKS AT ALL COST. ask neighbors with balanced friendly digs if they could help you socialize your dog and start out asking the pet store trainers to pet your dog because they know how to peg a nervous dog and pe thg him af the same time so he knows it's ok and give him treats. Eventually you will have a non issue dog that is generally friendly. But always advocate for your dog. Dont left anyone be disrespectful and invade his personal space and donf let him socialize with rudra digs to avoid set backs in his confidence. It's ok to say no and imagine how annoying it would be to say hi to everyone and every dog. He doesn't have to say hi to everyone everytime
@@justagirlandherdogs615 Thank you for your answer, good to hear your point of view. Gladly I can say that I work with my dog for a while now and he is getting better every day, so for now I will stick to my techniques. I see some elements in Zaks vid, that can be helpful in my situation. Greetings to you and your dog :)
@@katczu nice! Ya the whole process of stopping the reactivity took about 2 weeks but the desensitization and counter conditioning took about a few months so I'd say if your vigilant it should take about six months but you should always socialize and create positive associations for life even if your dogs isnt reactive. Ya know?
Love Inertia's play dead. When I ask, I get an almost dead, with legs waving. I'm taking this as a good sign. Fergus does like training, and tells me when he thinks it's time. 😁
Hey Zak, I really love your videos. I rescued a dog about a month ago and we have just been learning a lot from you and Inertia! thank you so much. Do you think you can do a video on feeding? I think dog feeding is a very hot topic and for me as a new dog mom it’s really difficult to know the difference between good and bad food (price ranges, proteins, carbohydrates...) Anyway, keep it up, I like your channel a lot!
She is so pretty 😍😍and adorable! You are awesome! I’m looking for a new dog to adopt from a shelter, and once I find the perfect one, I’ll use your videos to train!
Question: My family has been looking forward to buying a GSD puppy this May, (from a responsible breeder), and I've done all the research I could about dog training. One part that I'm scared about: Do you think it is possible to properly socialize a GSD puppy while in quarantine? Because if I'm going to get a puppy, I want to raise him right.
Yeah I think that it is the common problem in training dog nowadays because my friend also find a hard time to properly socialize his new puppy but I think he done some research and found this thing that solved his problem in training his dog.
Roha R what you want to do is get the puppy and begin to socialize and train the same day. Create boundaries and begin to luring into positions but dont create a command yet just lure them then reward to build that muscle memory and when they’re older begin to put the commands together. (Oh and socializing means he dog can see another dog or person…they don’t have to meet them because that will create more value in dogs and people then you) walking by is still socializing.
@@victork1504 Thanks for the help. We have two other dogs on our street, I think. A mini shiba and a great dane, and there are a loy of small children. I'll make sure that he sees them while social distancing.
I can’t believe she’s so big now! I have a poodle mix that stayed puppy size who is a 1 year old now. She likes to kangaroo jump during our walks so hoping to train through that!
Do you have any experience training retired racing greyhounds or similar dogs? I’ve wanted a retired greyhound for a long time, but I’ve heard there’s some nuances about training retired hounds specifically and that they don’t always do well in obedience classes for one reason or another. If you have any insight or helpful tips, I’d love to hear about it.
We are loving in Moscow and she is always very interested in all the activity going on around her. This video is going to be very helpful, thank you so much!
Hi Zac I have a mini Ozzy slash border collie he is always barking at people we We Bring treats to distractive him it’s not really working can you help do you have any tips
You need to USE the dog. A border collie need a proper job to do. Could be anything, like herding, searching, agility etc. Those dpgs should get a minimal of 3 hours work time each day (when fully grown). Preferably more. A good mix of mental and physical activity is needed. That usually solves all problems people have with border collies/mixes of them. After that you can just train the dog like you normally would to avoid barking
Exercise. Exercise, exercise. Exercise? Exercise... Exercise Exercise. EXERCISE... (Exercise) Please exercise your dog DAILY for at LEAST one to two hours, I highly recommend two or more, but if you can only do one, make the most of it. Not meaning to be rude, but if you can’t exercise your dog, you shouldn’t have one. That’s not just for you, that counts for everyone. I don’t mean to say you don’t exercise your dog, just if you can’t, don’t get one. (No hate, just don’t want more obese dogs, OR have a dog here with health problems.) Just so you know, Edit: I am no dog trainer. I just have had dogs all my life, ever since I was born, so I know these things. I just wanted everyone to know I am not as advanced as zac, even if you think in the slightest bit. It is his job, and also his life. Mine is only my life. Just wanted to help, because I know these things, but whether you use this or not, this is what works for me.
@@branfordfamilies8282 1 or two hours is not enough for a border collie. 3 or 4 ok is closer to it. Those dogs are on another level, even compared to other herding breeds.
@@TheFrontyer agreed they need a ton of exercise. Also, just as importantly, mental stimulation. They'll get bored out of their minds if not given tasks to do
Oh i like that leash and harness on Inertia a lot. I was wondering if you could share a link of the leash and harness that Inertia used in this video? Thank you so much!
hey Zak! What if you have a male dog that not only wants to smell places but also mark territory? Some places are more inconvenient for dogs too pee while others like trees are totally fine. How can we deal with that?
Thank u so much for this series. Inertia is so cute. Im following and training Pocket my 7 months old rescue dog. Its so hard to not lose patience and sometimes I do lose it, working on myself as well ^^. What harnest are you using on Inertia ?
I'm sure this has been asked before but idk where else to ask, can you train a dog to potty indoors AND outdoors or do they conflict with one another? Currently pad training my dog indoors and want to get him out for walks / bathroom use too. Any insight is appreciated!
I love this! The biggest problem I have with my dog is that he hates walks on a leash. Anytime we get him walking on it , he starts jumping up my leg and barking. How can I stop this? He's a chihuahua mix, if that helps.
Why doesn't he use a focus command or toy to get her attention off the other dogs who are stimulating her. If she doesn't "check in" with him she's not listening. It's also funny that once he starts trick training she knows everytime she does a trick wether he asked or not she will get a treat. Smart dog.
Question .. how do you handle when other dogs you're walking by are not polite? Along those same lines, can being in the company of untrained dogs undo the progress my dog has achieved?? Thanks in advance .. and I love your videos :)
Whenever we play tennis, our retriever chases after the ball and running off with it lmao and we cant just keep him in the house either, because he'll be sad to be left out :(
Hi, Zak! I’ve been following you for many years, and I’m a big fan. However I do have a question for you. We almost never see you deal with an extremely difficult case, like an extremely reactive out of control older dog or an aggressive dog or a dog with really bad genetics. Do you personally believe that in some very difficult cases, positive reinforcement alone cannot be enough? Like 90 to 95% positive reinforcement and 5 to 10% leash correction methods, wouldn’t that be a balanced approach and quicker process? Are there cases where are you feel like you failed? Would you share your failures and what you learned from them? Thanks.
@@Sophie-xs6cw he leash pops inertia in almost every other video. I doubt he will be able to train an aggressive dog he is not considered a trainer in my books he is like an above average dog owner and maybe a mediocre trick trainer. An aggressive high drive dog will be too much and I do think he will do more harm than good trying to train a dog like that.
@Jim Pickens Thanks, Jim. I agree with many of the things you said, but I would love it if you can elaborate - let's say you are working with a dog who literally would NOT offer calm behavior for you to mark for hours and hours, and then when he finally lies down you go to reward him, and just the act of you going towards him to reward him gets him super excited again for hours and hours (I have worked with dogs like this, overly excited by positive reinforcement). What would you do? And what did you do with that shelter dog? (Just generally). Thanks!
Positive reinforcement is not only about giving food to the dog. Maybe trying to explore what the dog likes in his own privacy and practice at home to use it as a reinforcer. If you have a very reactive dog with high food arousal, then maybe you could check Tom Davis (Upstate Canine Educator). His videos can give better insight on how to handle extreme cases. For dogs that have such high arousal, is not ideal to work with food. There are other steps to work with prior to thinking about using food and build a better relationship.
@@dogsfromthecity Yes, I know about Tom, and I will check for videos of food arousal on his channel, but, yeah, that brings me back to my first point because Tom would probably use a slip lead or remote collar or some other form of escape training... Anyway, thanks though!
Zak, What breed is inertia I am buying a new dog and I saw a dog in the shelter looking like inertia They said it was a border Collie Is she a border collie? Please help me Zak
Hi Zak, I love your videos; my 4 year old catahoula is allergic to most proteins and preservatives so finding a treat to use as a reward is a challenge. Most of the time she will listen to me on our daily walks, but occasionally still acts out if another dog is close by -- I am always careful around other dogs since there doesn't seem to be a pattern to her bad behavior. She always interacts well with dogs at the daycare, but it must just be about the leash or trying to protect me?
Idk if this is the right place to ask but I have a few issues that idk how to fix (not normal ones) my dog is extremely smart and know just about everything and I can take her into stores and different places and she remains calm and heals and is always paying attention to me but she won't take treats if we're not at home. One time when we were on a walk someone stopped to give her a treat which she took but she wouldn't eat idk, she won't take random food off the ground either so it's kinda a win-loose situation. Another thing is that she backs up on command but she doesn't walk backwards, she jumps backwards and I can't get it out of her. She's weird lol
This guy is determined to love that dog.

She does so good. Very obvious countless more hours is spent training her as compared to most dogs unfortunately.
i agree and i had the same problem before i found this article where there was this add that helped me a lotzip1ink.com/gG
Good and nuanced training. Excellent understanding of the psychology! 6:35 excellent moment!
Zak, for me, you are the best trainer in United States
The title.... 😂😂😂😂
It's amazing..will try it..thanku so much sir.😃😃😘
These videos are great, awesome quality and trainer.
Thank you for you science based approach
Thanks :)
I feel you cause I also experienced that stage some time ago.
My dog has changed sm when i started to look you r video's !
Nice work man
This is very helpful for me atm! My newly rescued terrier is highly reactive at other dogs, so I will try your technique
His techniques wont work. Trust me I tried them with my highly reactive rescue as well. He was reactive to anything that moved. Cars, bikes, birds, squirrels, dogs, people, kids. HD is now a cardiac alert service which he could never be due to his behavior before
@@justagirlandherdogs615 what did you do to get the behavior better?
Hi guys happy easter
Do you ever walk Indy and Inertia together?
Just wondering love your channel helps me every day❤

Happy Easter!
Great video! Was excited to see your book in our small town library before they were closed 💖
Lol fake service dog spotted @ 11:55.
Great content 👌🏽
Appreciate it
I can’t believe she’s so big now! I have a poodle mix that stayed puppy size who is a 1 year old now. She likes to kangaroo jump during our walks so hoping to train through that!
I need someone like you in my life 😅😭 my dog is so difficult to train
Do you have any experience training retired racing greyhounds or similar dogs? I’ve wanted a retired greyhound for a long time, but I’ve heard there’s some nuances about training retired hounds specifically and that they don’t always do well in obedience classes for one reason or another. If you have any insight or helpful tips, I’d love to hear about it.
Good job Inertia 🐶
I signed up for 30 day perfect pup when I am getting my dog in 11 days!!😊😊🤫
I love that inertia is a border collie I have one and he's awesome and yours reminds me of mine when he was that age xoxoxo

Hi! New to your channel but loving the content. Do you do clinics/classes in person? A couple of your videos looked like it but they weren't recent.

Hi could you do a video about collars leashes and harnesses
!!Inertia I really love you!!😙😙😙
We have continuously come back to your videos when we are working to train our golden. What harness are you using that leads from the chest?
I suggest if you see a dog coming ask your dog to sit down or anything just make the dog problem solve
Exercise. Exercise, exercise. Exercise? Exercise... Exercise Exercise. EXERCISE... (Exercise)
Please exercise your dog DAILY for at LEAST one to two hours, I highly recommend two or more, but if you can only do one, make the most of it.
They'll get bored out of their minds if not given tasks to do
Aww cool. She did well!
Oh i like that leash and harness on Inertia a lot. I was wondering if you could share a link of the leash and harness that Inertia used in this video? Thank you so much!
Make a video on how to teach dog to play volleyball
hey Zak! What if you have a male dog that not only wants to smell places but also mark territory? Some places are more inconvenient for dogs too pee while others like trees are totally fine. How can we deal with that?
Also, how do you deal with humping behaviors? Those can be pretty inconvenient as well
Thank u so much for this series. Inertia is so cute. Im following and training Pocket my 7 months old rescue dog. Its so hard to not lose patience and sometimes I do lose it, working on myself as well ^^.
What harnest are you using on Inertia ?
Can you walk her without any food? This must be very frustrating for the dog to never get anywhere without you stopping, turning or other stuff.
Baby puppies make me laugh 😂
It helped me
I'm sure this has been asked before but idk where else to ask, can you train a dog to potty indoors AND outdoors or do they conflict with one another? Currently pad training my dog indoors and want to get him out for walks / bathroom use too. Any insight is appreciated!
I love this! The biggest problem I have with my dog is that he hates walks on a leash. Anytime we get him walking on it , he starts jumping up my leg and barking. How can I stop this? He's a chihuahua mix, if that helps.
Sir u r great.. Trainer❤
I am from India🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮
Bikash c Choudhury
Bruh you realize that ain’t the Indian flag right? XD it’s fine I just thought it was kinda funnyb
I’m so early Love your vids and inertia
Thanks.
mahakhalil1 I’m curious about that too. I think the only time I’ve ever seen him do a correction is when inertia was guarding her food
At 8:05... A dog that has been "training" for more than 6 months now, can't hold a stay command for more than 15 seconds? C'mon man!
Wow good dog trainer 👌😘
love your videos! How do you decide when to clip the leash in the front of the harness and when to clip it on the back?

@@ruthpine-apple9860 Thank you so much
Ooh thank you Zak for liking my comment
Hi Zak, I love your videos; my 4 year old catahoula is allergic to most proteins and preservatives so finding a treat to use as a reward is a challenge. Most of the time she will listen to me on our daily walks, but occasionally still acts out if another dog is close by -- I am always careful around other dogs since there doesn't seem to be a pattern to her bad behavior. She always interacts well with dogs at the daycare, but it must just be about the leash or trying to protect me?
Zak,do you recommend a gentle leader for a dog who pulls and needs to learn to heal
No, it can be harmful (if he pulls too much)
imagine actually meeting ZAK GEORGE!!!
If i had the patience to train my dog more strictly😭
