I very much agree, although I’m a tad biased. I’m not a big fan of Elvis, but People often say that Johnny often talked in his songs. Even if so, he was so raw and himself that it resonated to the core of his audience. His presence was and is amazing and I regret not being able to see him live :l
I really like the both of them, I favour more to elvis but Johnny had more emotion in his voice you can feel the pain, hurt and sadness. Elvis is more romantic and get up and party
In his book he said that not a day went by that he didn't long for an ice cold brew, and I can myself relate to that. The Beast in myself will be tamed, but it may take a few years.
Hangover made me look too, but I am a Cash fan long time . A real one man band just voice and guitar and infinite personality. Cash and Carter are the belong in the best of my memories. Thanks!!
When you've done as many iconic classics as JC has done, even a brilliant song -- something that would be a career-making breakthrough for any lesser artist -- can get lost in the underbrush. This isn't the first or only phenomenal Cash track that's an also-ran compared to his monster-hit masterworks.
Look at the audience surrounding him. You can hear a pin drop, they are so captivated. To think that Johnny was, what, 61 here, and that he still had such gravitas and command of the stage at that age is just…wow. Imagine how intimidated the other acts on this show, Mazzy Star/Carleen Anderson/Pops Staples were to follow this guy after he performed. You cannot top him.
The beast in me Is caged by frail and fragile bars Restless by day And by night rants and rages at the stars God help the beast in me The beast in me Has had to learn to live with pain And how to shelter from the rain And in the twinkling of an eye Might have to be restrained God help the beast in me Sometimes it tries to kid me That it's just a teddy bear And even somehow manage to vanish in the air And that is when I must beware Of the beast in me that everybody knows They've seen him out dressed in my clothes Patently unclear If it's New York or New Year God help the beast in me
"Patently unclear, if its New York, or New Year" If someone held a quiz to guess who wrote the song, on my list of five artists would definitely be Nick Lowe... probably top 3. Nick is that talented, truly underrated. And, he did this under the (self-imposed) pressure of trying to impress his father-in-law, Mr Cash.
Nick is a master songwriter and his phrasing is so clever compared to most artists. The only songwriter I know who uses the word "feckless" in a song: "For her feckless boy she did weep and wail Saying "Lord have mercy, where did I fail? Out my belly to pick up a gun And fall for the Rose of England" (the song is about the cruelty and senseless nature of war, since, always.) Lowe paints pictures with his words, one of my favorite verses is in his song, "So It Goes": "In the air there's aftershave lotion In the wake of a snake-hipped Persian On his arm is a skintight vision Wonder why she ain't mine, and she is his'n And so it goes..."
Except that this song was written by Nick Lowe. I agree with you that Mr Cash was a master of using those chords. I bet it is hard work to make the music seem so simple and that was part of his genius.
I am not really a country music fan but this song transcends a genera of music. I am an acute rapid cycling (every 30-45 minutes) Bipolar 2. If there ever was a song that perfectly describes what it is like to be a bipolar this should be our anthem. Thank you so much to whoever wrote this song. It makes me feel less alone hearing a song that says so much to explain a condition that is so difficult to explain. The mentally ill are still fair game for slurs and discrimination. It still seems ok with the majority to openly make such comments as, crazy, bonkers or nuts. Lets not forget the common expression reinforcing false stereotypes that all Bipolars are violent. I have held career level positions and due to human resources (Rats & Spys) that share info regardless of federal law pertaining to confidentiality of health information. You then become a target for dismissal due to your diagnosis, regardless of job performance based on a biochemical imbalance of organic compounds. Bipolarism is a shift in body chemicals as diabetes is but you won't hear of similar ill treatment. I have ranted long enough, my apologies for my lack of manners. Great soul touching song. Are there any other manic depressives feel this song is a great explanation? Please comment if your out there.
When you listen to Johnny Cash, you stop and you listen....even for a 21 year old kid watching it through a screen, it's absolutely mesmerizing.....you want to cheer but, you can't help but listen...and friend, you can't speak if you don't give an ear and listen Just editing this...I am drunk and didn't know it rhymed (mind me I rhymed listen 2 or 3 times bleh)
It can't! I don't think the audience could relate. ...washed right over them. This song was meant for an audience who is really seriously grieving with regret. Just ask Nick Lowe. So when John asked Nick for another song like Beast, that spelled it out that he knew that Nick was selling "good weed", so to speak. ....aaaaand John wanted more! I respect both of these artists for what they went through to produce such great songs in their careers. And pretty cool of Nick Lowe to be able to reflect and say, "yeah he was once my father-in-law". ....Just awesome. No pressure Nick. lol. Write a couple of songs for the man himself. The legend, Johnny Cash.
@@tomallen5837 I've been a devotee of Nick Lowe since the early 80s, when I bought two of his albums from a cut-out bin of cassette tapes just because the song titles look interesting, and I recognized the song, "Cracking Up". I had just heard Tom Petty's version and loved it, so finding the original artist's recording for 99 cents was cool. OMG, I got home and played those tapes and thought, "Why didn't I know about him before?" I own more Nick Lowe albums now than of any other artist (by far) and never get tired of listening to them. In 2002, I got to see him in person, performing at a Victorian era theatre in Santa Barbara. There was maybe 200 audience members who were absolutely silent during his performance. He sat on a bar stool, played acoustic guitar and sang... no other musicians accompanied him, and it was perfection! I got to meet him after the show and got a pic with him, an autograph, and got to ask him one question. He was lovely, and yes, his hair really does look that good! I was so happy I don't think my feet touched the ground for at least a month! Lowe deserves more fame than he's ever received, but he's a pretty humble guy and I think he's happy with his level of success. I mean, he did get to hang out with and write song for Johnny! Johnny also did a wonderful version of Lowe's "Without Love" that gives us all the feels, too.
good music is good music my man, it usualy reflects how you feel right ? Wouldn't it be absurd to limit your musical taste because of your skincolor ? I'm caucasian, and i like oldschool 90's,00 hiphop.
The beast in me. I love it. but I was laughing so hard When I was watching the hangover 2 and my daughters were singing "THE BEE STING ME". hahahahah very funny. because the movie is one of the best comedy movies my opinion.? AND The Bee Sting Me.
+Dave Greenwood Some of us will listen - I can only point you to Jesus. Cash knew it and so do I. I know a thing or two about darkness (my Hyde almost killed someone I love) and by the grace of God I made it out and Hyde is dead, You can too; I pray the best for you.
Glad both you and your friend survived. JC (Johnny Cash) had JC (the Other One) to thank for saving his life. The biopic, "Walk the Line," never gave proper credit to that; totally ruined for me what shoulda been a great movie.
I don't believe in god. Life is hard and then you die. Make the best of it. Imho without sadness there can't be joy. We need darkness to see the light. I hope you get through the tough times well and appreciate the good ones. This one might well be the only life we'll ever live.
It’s not about power.. it’s written by Nick Lowe… it can only be sung and understood by an ALCOHOLIC… of which I am one just like Johnny and Nick..the alcoholic is two people …God Help the Beast in Me..😢😢
It's ok, alcoholism can be the path to realising the truth, that's its just a thing that can kill the pain, but Johnny Cash knows that too. I love him always, one of most beautiful people that have existed
It’s an example of the madness that comes over him when the Beast has taken over. The Beast has no logic or sense only rage and terrible violence ready to be unleashed on what has triggered it or anyone unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! The eyes rollover black like a shark’s and murder is in the heart of the Beast!
Funny NOT! Intro was on LOUD on my set up, thank you for not warning me 5 seconds before I had a chance to turn it down. The LOUDEST clapter heard from New York city down to New Mexico.
Johnny Cash was a perfect example that sometimes simplicity makes perfection.
@IRISH LAD awesome songwriting from a brit!
There was a time when only a voice and a guitar were enough to pay the audience attention!
But what a voice...
Facts
Fish
Theres still enough audience paying attention out here. ✌🏻
The time is still here, just fewer people still appreciate it.
The people in the crowd just witnessed something unbelievably special 😔
in my opinion Johnny's voice is so much more powerful then elvis's voice

I think his songs are more powerful, but vocally? No way.

You understand the song🙏
truly a song to listen to when drunk
like I am now
usually after night of drinking I listen to this the next morning

Written especially for Johnny Cash by the brilliant Nick Lowe.
❤

Written by the incomparable Nick Lowe, at one time Johnny’s son-in-law.
we were lucky to have him as long as we did. I miss him, something fierce.
this song is so good why is it so underated?
Bandit Raider Because it makes people think & confront uncomfortable concepts. Most people don't like that.

Yes. You’re the only fucking special person.
I think there's a beast inside all of us
This just knocks me out.
Chilling....
so much wisdom in this song. we've all been there. beautiful. Thank God for Johnny Cash.
He could make his voice so deep.. Wow.
This is his theme song, pure talent paired with a terrifying image.
Nick Lowe bravo song..
It sums my life up as an alcoholic…😢😢
I still miss Johnny
The beast in me
Is caged by frail and fragile bars
Restless by day
And by night rants and rages at the stars
God help the beast in me
The beast in me
Has had to learn to live with pain
And how to shelter from the rain
And in the twinkling of an eye
Might have to be restrained
God help the beast in me
Sometimes it tries to kid me
That it's just a teddy bear
And even somehow manage to vanish in the air
And that is when I must beware
Of the beast in me that everybody knows
They've seen him out dressed in my clothes

Robert Smith I'm sure God wanted to have real country music in heaven.
