I've been going to cons for a long time on the west coast (like over a decade). It used to be way different here, exactly how you described your experience at midwest cons. :c I'm not exactly sure what changed here in the west coast. It makes me extremely sad though. Making friends/talking to new people is like theee best part of going to cons. It feels like one big popularity contest now.
Crafting hobbies, especially cosplay, are a lot more messy and time consuming than people think! I love vlogs like this to show some of the reality of it. Cant speak for west cons but as someone from the east, AWA and Momocon are DEF big nerd /wholesome friend talk cons. BUT Momocon is really starting to grow massively huge, in terms of crowds, and the time of year its in is horrid because its like 100 degrees more and more now with global warming kicking Georgias ass. But this year 2024, AWA is being moved to winter for the first time?? and its incredible of them to do that because Georgia gets SO painfully hot in cosplay and even indoors because many of those venues are glass buildings in Summer. but besides that- the energy of Atlanta cons are very like familial and fun and everyones just trying to enjoy it and usually has alot of etiquette about respect and boundaries. There can be party moments but theres alot of space for moving to a diff area of a venue or hotel and getting a calmer or louder vibe if you like. And people tend to stay up late if ur not a morning convention person ! Just thought I'd share that, cus I also just enjoy cons for the happy energy along with seeing amazing costume work.
