- Keir Starmer is close to failing the first test of his leadership, the SNP's Westminster leader has said, if he does not commit to abolish the two-child benefit cap.
It was hoped the policy would be announced in Wednesday's King's Speech, in which Labour will lay out its plans for the first 100 days of its government.
Enacting the plan would benefit around 1.6 million children, who are missing out on thousands of pounds a year due to the two-child benefit cap.

If you kept the cap in place but agreed to pay the free school meals for all children, then responsibility to children would be met without huge cash payments to those with huge families.
Looking at policies in isolation sometimes does not give a true picture.
Great comment. And ensures that the spend is going towards bettering he living standards of those children not paying for dads sky sports subscription. Which in turn builds support for future policies aimed at tackling child poverty

If you can’t afford kids don’t take them into poverty, think of the kids and not of yourself. Take personal responsibility and don’t expect others to sort it for you!
I bet you're the type to also complain about immigration. British people cannot afford to have kids in current society as work does not pay what it used to. As a result we have a declining population and a growing ELDERLY population. We then need immigrants to fill jobs. The solution is to make having children as easily affordable as it was in the 80s and 90s.
I'm 24, a father of 3 and the Scottish child payment is a game changer

Is it awful to suggest not having a third child if you can’t provide for it?
No I really don't believe it's awful!!
Good Point

That needs elaboration, tax asset income.

Absolutely spot on
Reduce tax, stop having kids if you cant afford them
@@sciencefliestothemoon2305 Asset income is already taxed. What is not kept in check is excessive asset wealth, families of aristocracy keeping gifted assets in the family for centuries and living off the wealth they generate. Maybe if they made a conscience decision to limit their families to the amount they could financially subsidise like everybody else has to might mean they could pay their own rent or mortgages?

Where do you draw the line, certain communties in the U.K. have an average of 3.8 children I went to school with someone from that community who had 7 siblings . should we be paying for people to be having that many kids when they can’t afford it, but they willingly choose to do it anyways.
Where do you call the line on how many kids the tax payer needs to support.
Whilst other people who might of wanted more kids might restrain because they know it’s too much of a financial burden.
Exactly.
It's not the childrens fault if their parents are irresponsible.
How many children shall be funded6,7,8,9,10? Wheee shall the numbers stop, Labour didnt put children in proverty, i am sorey this man is wrong, what happens in Scotland doesnt happen all over the world, the money for child proverty is not small. I thought you all didnt want Labour to put up tax.

There’s a difference between not being able to do something and choosing not to do something. Labour are just as bad as the Tories and will be seen as the same party if they don’t start changing things for the better. One of those things is lifting people out of poverty. They have the money, the means to find the money and the choice of how to spend it.

Don't have kids if you cannot afford them - not rocket science.
So poor people can never have a family? Don’t be daft.
@@peterdelmonte9832 By your argument, you then expect everyone else to pay for that poor family's choices? I think not. People should be thankful that you can claim up to two children at all, if you want more than that then you should be expected to pay your own way for your own family in which you decided to make your own decisions within.
Also government; why aren’t people having kids 😂😂😂
@peterdelmonte9832 You can claim for two kids. If you want more kids, then work harder & pay for them yourself!
Lift them out of poverty ✅
Give more cash to parents who can't afford the kids they chose to have when we have family control clinics and a 100% literacy rate ❎
Give the kids school meals free to lift the strain, give the kids discounted or free school trips, give high performing pupils who're from poor households financial reward for staying out of trouble, trying hard in school and changing the narrative. Set them up to succeed and want to succeed.
Parents who can't afford kids but has them for the sake of it have already proven they're not making the best decisions so why give more cash? The kids are the future invest in them and let their hard work be rewarded
Throwing money at the problem isn't going to make things better.
Here we have the SNP once again talking sense and the Scottish electorate chose to reduce their voice down to 9 seats, it's sad that the one party who always tries to do what is right for the UK are seen as the enemy. What many fail to understand about the SNP is this: Yes they want independence BUT they also want what is best for the UK and the people of the UK WHILE we are in the union, as what is bad for the UK is bad for Scotland and they love Scotland with a passion and do not like to see it's people being mauled by bad decisions.
So now they will try and put forward an amendment in WM on the issue to try get Labour to be sensible but it will amount to nothing with only 9 seats, in the meantime Scottish labour MP's "Scotland's voice at the heart of a Labour Government" (remember that beauty) will do nothing but what the whip tells them. Never forget this, there is not such thing as a Scottish Labour MP, just Labour MP's. Feel free to check the Electoral commission and search for registered political parties. They don't exist.

It's funny how people ask the SNP ''Because you lost so many votes have you lost the mandate for independence?''. After the last Scottish election there WAS a majority of MP's that campaigned for independence and the elected Scottish government were just told 'no' by Sunak. Starmer said he would do the same. It's just funny that journalists only ask about the independence mandate when the SNP don't have the numbers but when they do magically they don't seem to care about mandates. No voters in 2014 are responsible for the last 14 years of trash coming out of UK politics into Scotland. If people want to have more children why should finances restrict a human desire? The economy actually needs ppl to have more children, hence why the topic is everywhere atm. Low birth rates = less workers = less growth = more immigration required also.
I don't think this cap should be lifted. I had 2 children back in the early 80's and stopped because I wouldn't have been able to afford any more. I understand that families circumstances can change but you have to think about this before you decide to have more than 2.
Yes future kids being born this should be considered, but what about the already starving families with 3+ kids??
@@thatgushiekid1662 Some people just have too many children that they can't afford to keep. More than 3 children before the cap was in place would have cost a lot of money but they still had more. My husband is one of 10, the oldest is now 97 but they didn't have all the hand outs that are available today, they just got on with it.

The two-child benefit cap is a cruel, cynical and immoral policy. In practical terms it means that all the children in the family are deprived, since the available money has to be stretched further. I also hate any kind of stigma on a child that implies that he or she should not have been born.
Don’t have too many kids.
But they chose to have that many kids…
@@inphowatcher9748But the child didn't ask to be born, and shouldn't be punished for existing. In any case, as others have pointed out, people might be doing reasonably well and then fall on hard times. Yes let’s increase taxes of hardworking couples who can’t afford children so the scroungers can keep having more, who then also end up on benefits. Well done labour
Child benefit does not go to children, it goes to their parents.
I don't believe that the cap is the best way to get children out of abject poverty that includes hunger. Unfortunately some parents have other pressures too, ones that could mean loosing their home, expensive bills or a chaotic lifestyle. These "other" pressures often can have a priority over food. Using money that is given directly to children via breakfast clubs, free dinners and after school clubs. These, with the inclusion of better child and adult services is the better use of funding for now.
More can be done to help children directly this way, which is the plan for now.
Utter shite
Scotland has shown otherwise & has been backed by charities working in the field.
@@hashburystumble8808 Looking at the data my comments still stand.
From CPAG "In Scotland child poverty remains high, but is EXPECTED to start falling significantly as a result of recent policy interventions" March 2024. "
Unfortunately the trajectory is still upwards from the period 2018-2021 it has risen from 20% (before housing costs) to 24% in the period 2020-2023. After housing cost have risen from 21% in 2010 to 24% in 2023.
Which indicates that other pressures as well as housing are over riding the payments from Gov to parents.
Child poverty markers are from the standpoint of a family income perspective.
I still think intervention directly with children will make the fastest difference.
Saying that, it would be nice for the rest of the family to feel the same benefit. In the fastest time.
Sorry I disagree on this one. Lifting the cap would result in those fiddling the system having more children to get more benefits.
The fix should be not paying people to have more kids.

Now tell us what your plan is to pay for it. I get wanting it gone - a lot of people want it gone, as it's a policy which punishes people for changes in circumstances. The other way to look at it is that parents are choosing to bring those children into poverty. 2 child cap is realistic, affordable and manageable.

@DavidZ4-gg3dm what if they had say 3 kids when they're doing well then a family tragedy meant they were without the same income? Too late to not have the kids then!
You mean don't have parents who can't afford you
Vasectomies are free in England….
@PlutoPhobia-qg6wn my parents could afford me. You can still have two kids and receive benefits for each.
Sorry but after two thats it the goverment really shouldnt be giving anymore and before anyone comes at me no im not rich and yes i have 2 kids and if i had a 3rd id still feel this way
SNP sitting talking like they know how to look after there people when we are sitting here with high drug deaths and poor kids and schools 🏫
why outta interest?
Ppl who say the same thing usually cry about white brits not having enough kids and then complaining when more immigrants r brought in to make up for lack of workers
So reduce support to... ...make more kids poor?
The more poverty the higher the birth rates.
@@R53Hole ever herd of work ? How about they sort it so we can work to feed our family's and not pay threw the noses or here's a bright idea use condom and other kinds of protection to not have a 3rd kid cos you can't afford it they are all free for you 😉
We can’t afford to pay for extra children the parents should look after there children they decided to have them they should be able to afford to look after them not the tax payers
Its not perfect however our birthrate is on the floor. Hence why we need alot of immigrants to fill the void. Until that is addressed it will carry on.
SNP currently can't field an 11 man football team with their MPs so they need to be quiet
Ridiculous attitude, their job is to speak for those who voted for them.
Let's interpret the real meaning of this statement.. 'get back in your box you Jock bastard' speak plainly you colonial 🤡. :
Don't have kids you can't afford to have.
I'm the eldest of 4 siblings and my parents did not receive handouts. My dad worked with the same company my entire life and put himself through college while I was a baby. Working the fruit market in the morning, college during the day and work at night. He built his way up through his work and has remained through 3 seperate takeovers of the business.
My mum worked 3 jobs at one point. Self employed with each one. Working from early in the morning to late at night.
If they stopped working, even for a couple of weeks, they wouldn't be able to pay the mortgage.
Improve sex education in schools and make vasectomies more widely accessible.
I would argue that no-one should have to work 3 jobs just to make ends meet. An arguments about whether someone should have had another kid or not aside, at the end of the day the kid wasn't chosen to be born, and they are being condemned to poverty for something they have no control over.
On one hand you want people to have less kids cos it's impossible to raise them in a society where everything costs a fortune. Therefore there is a shortfall of people paying into the system..and on the other hand you want to stop immigration.
@@literallyJoel They didn't do it to make ends meet, they did it to provide a quality life for their children. They could've moved us to some council estate which is exactly what they worked so hard to get out of.
If you struggled in life and want other people to struggle in life because 'you turned out fine', you did NOT in fact turn out fine.
@@rickparkinmoto amazingly, my siblings and I all have degrees and don't live with our parents. Seems like my parents hard work paid off. But hey, I didn't turn out fine because I believe in working for a living.
Your kids are your responsibility not every tax payers What about the millions of invisible people single or those who chose not to have kids who get no help struggle but are taxed to the hilt to pay for other peoples kids
meanwhile, you probably complain about the immigrants we NEED because British people are not having enough kids.
Kids wouldnt be in poverty if people stopped having too many if you cant feed them dont breed them. Take note all you muslim brethren.
