From a production standpoint, I appreciate your always working to be better. I know it's a small thing, but I liked your new graphics. Just one of the little details that sets your videos apart.
Great video Ryan! I really enjoyed working with you on the renovation last year. You really have this process nailed down. Your renovation guide is really an amazing resource to anyone who is on the fence about transforming there lawn. As you said about having things ready to go for the renovation, the time is definitely now before supplies, materials, and equipment start flying off the shelves. Good luck to everyone who is renovating this year!
Thank you for putting out this video when you did. I’ve got 5lbs of kbg sitting here and I had been waffling back and forth with killing a area that is separate by concrete from the rest and using it as a test patch. Your video made me get off my butt and hit glyphosate round 1! I’m hoping I can make this seed thrive on central Kansas and if so, kill the rest and get on that reel mowing game!
Pretty much the only grass that will grow and actually live season to season is going to be fine fescue in cool season grass and zoysia for warm season grass that will do good is some shade but not heavy shade
Ryan I like to invite you to a challenge, see south of the border you all have plenty of tools and resources available for a great lawn, however up north a lot of the herbicides are banned and can’t be used for cosmetic purposes. Just ordered my seed for the fall. 4th Millennium Tall Fescue. Got my Amazon cart full of some other simple lawn solutions products as well. Humic Acid, 3-18-18 fertilizer for new seeds, and liquid aerator. Should be a good fall!
There is a lot of talk about leveling with an additive method, with sand or soil, but what is the methodology for leveling the yard with a subtractive method. Another words we have some high spots in the middle of the yard and as well as at the edges next to the driveway. The high spots could range from 1" to 4-5". I would imagine the technique might be different depending on how much one wanted to remove. I don't recall seeing a video in your playlists that addresses, removing soil to gain a level yard, do you. Thanks a bunch for all the content that you have produced through the years - its both enjoyable and informative. We look forward to your input on removing the high points in one's yard. - and maybe its a lot simpler than I want to make it. LOL, got a shovel? Thanks, Gus
Did you have any issues killing everything off? I sure as hell did. I sprayed at the beggining of July and didn't get a very good result so I changed from Round Up to Ortho and knocked out more but still had to hit 70% a third time and I still have two little areas that are apparently bionic.

The weather is starting to change and my bluegrass lawn is starting to turn green again, although slowly. In about 2-3 weeks I should be able to cut it lower and do some dethatching (needed) and aerating.
I plan to kill off my back yard next weekend when the hi temps are in the low 80's. Give it a week or so to die off, then spray it again if necessary. Then I'll spend a few days leveling out the lawn, aerating, etc, and I plan to seed around August 20th or so. Wish me luck!
Hey, Ryan Knorr. Love your channel but I need your opinion on something. You're one of the grass experts I'm going to ask about my situation and the hypothesis I've come up with. When they built our house 18 months ago, they sodded the lawn with KBG. Last fall, I overseeded with Jonathan Green Black Beauty which is a TTTF, KBG, and PRG mix. This year I've been having issues with my grass laying down or flopping over. I have to mow, rake it up so I can cut it, and mow it again. My research tells me that TTTF should be mowed at 3.5 to 4". Even when I mow at 3.5, it still lies flat. My research also tells me that KBG should be mowed at 2 to 2.5". I'm beginning to think that this grass that's falling over might be KBG and I should be mowing it at 2.5" or less. Just wondering how I could determine which grass it is that's lying down. Note: This is especially noticeable in the shaded part of the lawn. Thanks for any input you can provide on this dilemma.
Ryan , I’ve e followed you for three years now. I appreciate your ou approach to lawn care in the way you explain the steps weather its someone like yourself or the person who is beginning from day one. I am so geared up to get this started. I actually already have killed 95% of the front yard already. There are a couple of small green areas that I need to hit again. I have 75lbs of your Rye that I can't wait to see come up. I'm hoping to start leveling the yard next week. I can't believe I'm looking forward to this much work but I have all the tools and I prepped right so this should be enjoyable to look at late Fall. I do think I will over seed it in the Spring with your 80/20 Kentucky Rye mix. I just want to see this sissy grass on it's own first.
I gave up on my lawn this year. I over seeded and fertilized last year and wound up with a thick lush lawn this year. We've been through drought to flooding with an unusual hot and humid summer. It's so wet I'm cutting at 4" because it's uprooting.
Hey Ryan.......what kind of results can I expect if I overseed my Wisconsin lawn with a darker green cultivar of grass seed. Instead of a total kill off
I’m overseeding in fall with TTTF cool blue. My current lawn has all kinds of different cool season grass types (old home owners) and I just don’t have the balls to kill off my lawn. Im just gonna overseed for a few years in hopes it fully transforms my lawn 😩
I went down the overseeding route for years but it just never measured up. The full renovation is not that much harder in my opinion but to each their own.
@@ryanknorrlawncare First Thing I read when I woke up this morning was this reply Knorr lol. I told the wife and she is okay with a front yard renovation. Guess Im gonna do it!!!

Hello Ryan, I have a good on for you. I live in Chicago land area and I have neglected my lawn. I have discovered a lot of law damage by grubs. Pulling patches of lawn as I type. What seed would you recommend ? I feel like fine fescue got decimated by grubs. I hope I`m correct. Blades are super fine compared to other so I think it is fine fescue. What seed would you recommend for overseeing and planting now beside Kentucky Blue ? Thank you
Ryan,I have over a Arce and half to seed which I did in spring. The area came in pretty good but want to re seed as fall is coming. Can I just spread the seeds on top of the ground and roll in? To get more dirt for this size of lawn is expensive..
aeration, do you do a one pass like mowing the lawn or do you do and up/down pass then go back across left/right over top like a grid? I'm not sure what's too much in terms of passes over the same area.
Hi Ryan, love all your videos and wish my lawn is as nice as yours :) quick question for you, I live in the northeast and have a small lawn about 2800 square feet. I think my grass is a mix of tall fescues and ryegrass, not 100% sure. Recently did a dethatching and basically ruined the lawn. Doing an overseeding soon and was wondering if ryegrass would be a good choice? Thank you. Btw, congratulations on your new property and looking forward to see your projects videos to come.
Good stuff as usually... plan in montion already... glyphosate on Monday to the back and side yard... stuff ordered to get rid on common Bermuda in other area (as well as digging as much of it out as I can first... not a hug area and thankfully separated from the rest of the yard)... Tenacity is good to use too right while doing this? Think I saw that in your other videos... is that something you have in your store or just something you usually get in Amazon or elsewhere?
I live in Northern Virginia. Any recommendations for a great grass seed? Half of my lawn is brown from the heat. The soil is so dry and I think we need a renovation.
I live in Frederick County VA, likely not to far from you. Everything you’ll see will recommend turf type tall fescue, definitely a good choice. Might need a little more maintenance but you could go with Kentucky bluegrass as well, or a mix of both. Call hogan seed company out of Tennessee, they’ll set you up and the seed is 0 other crop and 0 weed seed, also great cultivars.
Im confused a few weeks ago i asked you about my new lawn with fill and top soil you said let it dry out naturally...am i supposed to kill the new stuff or am i supposed to let the new stuff keep comming up so it does dry up then kill and replant next year?
Would you recommend putting down tenacity after killing the lawn, to help prevent weeds until seeding 5 weeks later? I plan to use the Scotts fertilizer w/ Mesotrione at the time of seeding, so I wasn't sure if this would be too much.
I’m new to the channel. Just build a home in Western NY, and the builder hydro seeded over terrible dry compact dirt-no soil. How can I provide a better soil over time?
I have multiple mature oak and maple trees in my yard, so lots of shade. I can't decide between overseeding with TTTF or PRG this fall. I live in Michigan. Any advice or comments would be helpful. Thanks.
Ryan, I'm in your area (just north of Ankeny) and have a fairly well established front and side lawn (corner lot.) This is my first season in this home, and I've been successful with minimal weed invasion, as well as making my neighbors jealous. (Haha) I am wanting to do some soil leveling this early fall as I have several low spots in the main area and along the curb and sand only won't do it this year. I am also wanting to transition to a Tall Fescue grass. I have a hodge podge now of Bluegrass, possibly rye, and unknown. Would you recommend "nuking" it and starting totally over after leveling, of fill in the low spots and transition with over seeding over a few years? Thanks in advance!
With your help and videos Ryan and maybe a little Connor......not much tho my reno last fall came in so nice and looks great right through the season so far my mother n law wrangled me into doing her property this season......literally just sprayed the compare n save weed and grass killer tonight.......here we go.....lol
Ryan I’m planning my Reno now. I was looking at your kbg/ tall fescue blend. Was curious with what percentage of each are present within the blend. Thanks.
Percentages should be listed here in the description. Thanks! ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/ryan-knorr-lawn-care-elite-turf-type-tall-fescue-bluegrass/
Every brand of seed is made up of different cultivars of which many of those change year to year depending on availability or as new cultivars come out so what's in my bag are some of the same cultivars used from sss in the past or from stover last year for the fescue in my backyard.
Good video Ryan, what would be your cultivar of choice for kbg and rye, full sun and partial shade? Asking for a friend who is thinking of starting over
thanks so much for the informative videos. I just watch this video and then went and watch your step by step lawn renovation videos from a couple of years ago and now feel comfortable enough to do my own renovation. But i have a few questions. firtst, i live in northern Utah and we're experiencing extreme drought conditions were cities are asking us to limit our watering so I'm assuming now is not a good time to start or maybe a good time to kill off the existing lawn and then start the rest of the process next year. But not sure if i should wait intil next spring or next fall to plant the new seed. what are your thoughts on this. I'm wanting to do this because I have some undesirable grass taking over my back lawn. its realy thick and growing in patches and makes my lawn really bumpy. Again thank you for your great content.
Any of your seeds suitable for Northern California weather? All we have locally is what they call dwarf fescue and the sod at the big box stores are often broad leaf grass. I am looking for the finer blade grass but still durable to be walked on. I need to kill off a section that is infested with Bermuda runners.
I am in Iowa with a KBG lawn. Last summer I had tile installed in my yard and the ground has settled 3-4 inches in some stretches where the tile line is. I was going to use dirt to level out those areas and then seed. Would you recommend seeding rye or a mix of rye and KBG? I would likely overseed the entire yard although the rest of the yard doesn’t really need it.
Im trying to transition mine from weed/crabgrass to bluegrass. I think ill be ok without fully killing the lawn because the bluegrass spreads fairly quickly
Great video Ryan! Quick question. I smoked off my friends zoysia last weekend as we prepare to convert it to cool season turf. It’s mostly brown and yes, we are still throwing down water because I remember from an old video of yours lol. My question is, aside from mowing it down and dethatching, do we need to remove the zoysia or can we throw the seed right on top after we dethatch and aerate?
Thanks, RK! Great reminder to order some seed! My neighbor wants to reno but he’s not a lawn care enthusiast by any means so I sense some hesitation to irrigate. Can you recommend a good seed type that’s good for naturally irrigated lawns please? TIA
Just wanted to share that Google Maps satellite view has a dope distance measurement tool. Click on map, right click on marker, measure distance! You can get sq. ft. of any shape.
Great video - I have a mostly kbg lawn and I know people say not to overseed but I genuinely enjoy it. Do you recommend sticking with blue grass or introducing some rye grass? Thanks
Anytime really but hot weather is hard on new seedlings so that is why we wait until closer to fall since the temps are starting to head in the right direction
I've done 3 treatments of glyphosate and there is still a little green here or there... it hasn't grown, but is still a little green. Does it have to be brown to be dead?
@@ryanknorrlawncare I was afraid I went a little light. The sprayer was spraying more of a mist. Lesson learned. Next area will get a heavier app! Thanks for the response! Interesting enough, the green that is left is that old thick fescue, which is one reason I'm doing the renovation to begin with! LOL
Rain collection, pay to have a water well put in, consider local/native ground covering vegetation instead, or start over with a water wise grass like TifTuf Bermuda.
Color isn't dark enough compared to other elite rye grasses. Might as well get the darkest color you can (while still having good drought and disease performance, density, etc) if you're going to renovate. RPR is not the best choice IMO and overseeding a ryegrass stand is super easy so it's not like a spreading ryegrass is overly beneficial IMO.

I'm a fan of going all in but it's really up to you and your comfort with that type project
With your help and videos Ryan and maybe a little Connor......not much tho my reno last fall came in so nice and looks great right through the season so far my mother n law wrangled me into doing her property this season......literally just sprayed the compare n save weed and grass killer tonight.......here we go.....lol
Good video some really good tips. Thanks
How come y’all have the coolest dam podcast! Product y’all talk about I’m completely uneducated and have no idea but it’s entertaining
Ryan I’m planning my Reno now. I was looking at your kbg/ tall fescue blend. Was curious with what percentage of each are present within the blend. Thanks.
Percentages should be listed here in the description. Thanks! ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/ryan-knorr-lawn-care-elite-turf-type-tall-fescue-bluegrass/
Ryan is any of the seed use in your current lawn actually your branded lawn seed or from Seed Super Store?
Every brand of seed is made up of different cultivars of which many of those change year to year depending on availability or as new cultivars come out so what's in my bag are some of the same cultivars used from sss in the past or from stover last year for the fescue in my backyard.
Good video Ryan, what would be your cultivar of choice for kbg and rye, full sun and partial shade? Asking for a friend who is thinking of starting over
I wanted to renovate my whole yard this year but still waiting on my concrete work to get done that was suppose to be done in June!
Hopefully soon
thanks so much for the informative videos.
The tall fescue/kbg should be fine for that region
I think I'm going to overseed with one of Ryan's PRG options.
Solid video as always bro. Keep on keeping on!
Probably mix
Ryan, what do recommend to use to kill existing lawn. Thanks
Can't wait to begin!
Im trying to transition mine from weed/crabgrass to bluegrass. I think ill be ok without fully killing the lawn because the bluegrass spreads fairly quickly
Do you ship internationally? Eg Canada
Hmm I've never done a renovation over top of zoysia. If it is for sure all dead then I wouldn't see it being any different than any other grass type
@@ryanknorrlawncare I think so too. Mow the clipping super low. Dethatch. Aerate. Dump some dirt. Buy a Ryan Knorr leveler. Call it a day lol
How long does grass seed keep?
For sure over a year in a cool dry place
Quick question. if I have a newly planted tree and I want to kill off the surrounding grass should I be worried about harming the tree?
Thanks, RK! Great reminder to order some seed! My neighbor wants to reno but he’s not a lawn care enthusiast by any means so I sense some hesitation to irrigate. Can you recommend a good seed type that’s good for naturally irrigated lawns please?
TIA
Turf Type Tall Fescue
Just wanted to share that Google Maps satellite view has a dope distance measurement tool. Click on map, right click on marker, measure distance! You can get sq. ft. of any shape.
I have Bermuda grass and I’m thinking about doing a renovation but my question is do I need to till the ground after the grass is dead?
Great video - I have a mostly kbg lawn and I know people say not to overseed but I genuinely enjoy it. Do you recommend sticking with blue grass or introducing some rye grass? Thanks
Some rye in there is fine
He looks like he's between 15 years old and 40 years old. Either way, he's damn good at what he does. Good job.
When is the earliest you can seed the Reno with best results? It is still high 80s here in Pennsylvania.
Anytime really but hot weather is hard on new seedlings so that is why we wait until closer to fall since the temps are starting to head in the right direction
Please talk about the drought-resistant grass that grows four-foot roots. I refuse to waste city water on grass!
I've done 3 treatments of glyphosate and there is still a little green here or there... it hasn't grown, but is still a little green. Does it have to be brown to be dead?
Should definitely be toast after 3 apps unless your rate was off
@@ryanknorrlawncare I was afraid I went a little light. The sprayer was spraying more of a mist. Lesson learned. Next area will get a heavier app! Thanks for the response! Interesting enough, the green that is left is that old thick fescue, which is one reason I'm doing the renovation to begin with! LOL
What seed would you recommend for a city Blvd in MN? The snow plows are tough on the blvds.
Really doesn't matter too much. I get a lot of junk on mine in winter but they come back fine
Every July I get summer patch no matter what I do.
Ryan I live in Minnesota, do you recommend I scalp my lawn in the fall, spring, or never? I mow it at 3 inches the rest of the year.
No need to scalp
Can you or someone tell me a good source for Kentucky bluegrass granite?
Where were you at in Oregon?I have JB sod and live right next to Oregon turf and tree in Marion county. 2 big sod and seed providers in the state.
I live in Marion too, Salem. Are Ryan’s suggestions for killing now the same for us here in NW?
I would say so. I did my first app of round up last week.
How do you get a nice lawn, with a pesticide band in your area ? I know its easy with weed kill products. But how do you do it naturally ?
So how is this different than the Ryan knorr lawn care package I bought from simple lawn solutions?
What are you referring to?
You the man big dawg!
Good brief!
Advice for those of us in CA that can't water our lawns anymore?
Rain collection, pay to have a water well put in, consider local/native ground covering vegetation instead, or start over with a water wise grass like TifTuf Bermuda.
Hey Ryan what are your thoughts on Barenbrug RPR?
Color isn't dark enough compared to other elite rye grasses. Might as well get the darkest color you can (while still having good drought and disease performance, density, etc) if you're going to renovate. RPR is not the best choice IMO and overseeding a ryegrass stand is super easy so it's not like a spreading ryegrass is overly beneficial IMO.
@@markurry3149 thank you!
I agree with Mark. There are better options
Wish your seed shipped to Canada i realy want some
Best time of the year to dethatch?
Fall
If killing grass off first do you still need to top dress or is that just bare spots.
