My grandpa's B-24 sits at the bottom of the North Sea. 45 miles northeast of Great Yarmouth. I have no idea if it's been visited. But that's where she rests
Great dive. Please note that the B-24 was built by the Consolidated Aircraft Co. and not Boeing. This was the last B-24 built at the Douglas/Tulsa plant in 1944. I'm hoping to see part of her come home to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum.
If anyone has detailed information about this B-24 I would appreciate it. I believe it is aircraft serial number 28828. I’m looking for verification. I believe it is this aircraft after cross referencing the Bombardier’s flight log with the MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) which states the following: “28828 757th Bombardment Squadron 459th Bombardment Group 15th Air Force Giulia Airfield Foggia Italy. Ditched Aug 22, 1944 South of Vis Island in The Adriatic Sea After (3) Engines Failed While Returning From a Mission on The Synthetic Oil Refinery at Blechhammer Germany. (1) Crewman Was Killed. (9) Crew Survived and Got in (2) Life Rafts and Later Returned to Base. MACR 8942” This was First Lieutenant Robert Carr’s 16th bombing mission. He survived the ditching and flew a total of 35 missions and was rotated home. He stayed in the Air Force Reserves after the war. I would like to know if this is the same aircraft.
