I absolutely LOVE this product. It is so easy to use. Setting up custom modes is a breeze. None of the other products I've used are anywhere as easy to use. Your product has and will continue to vastly improve my MIDI workflow. 10/10.
I first bought a Novation 61SL Mk3 and was very happy with it. I also wanted something smaller, so I then got myself a Launchkey25 Mk3... and got thoroughly disappointed. Using Novation Components, I am able to configure the pots on the 61SL to send program change messages between 0 and 127, which is perfect. But on the Launchkey, it is not possible to configure the pots to send program change messages at all! On the Launchkey, the pots can only send CC messages. Novation Components doesn't allow me to use the pots for program change messages. This means that I'm forced to use the pads for sending program change messages. I normally would not mind that... if it wasn't for the fact that there are only 16 pads, which means I can only program 16 different program change messages. One bank in MIDI sound modules consist of 0-127 or 1-128 different patches. This has been the standard for ages. Only having access to 16 different program change numbers on a modern MIDI keyboard is quite ridiculous. The Launchkey has 4 different custom modes. So I could setup program change 0-15 on custom mode 1, then program change 16-31 on custom mode 2 etc. But since there are only 4 different custom modes, it will still only cover program change messages between 0 and 63 (16 pads x 4 custom modes). And also, if I occupy all 4 custom mode pad slots with program change messages, then there won't be any custom mode pad slots free for other functions. Why is it not possible to assign program change messages to the pots on the Launchkey? It's possible to do that on the SL, so why not on the Launchkey? Sending program change messages is one of the most fundamental applications for MIDI, and not being able to cover all 128 programs on the Launchkey renders it useless for me in many applications. I was thinking about going for a Launchkey 37 as well, but now I have to reconsider and look for something else that can actually send program change messages over the entire range. I really hope Novation will address this issue and make it possible to program the pots for program change messages even on the Launchkey.
Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback with us. It's great to hear that you are enjoying SL MkIII, I'm very sorry to hear that Launchkey didn't function as you had hoped. These controllers are quite different. As it's our flagship keyboard controller, designed to function as the centrepiece of a hybrid, hardware/software rig, SL MkIII has many features not found on our other controllers, such as Launchkey which is primarily an Ableton Live controller. John // Novation UK 🇬🇧
@@NovationHelp Thanks for that reply. Can you confirm Launch key can send program change using the pads? Assign any program change to any pad? Regards.
That's correct. You can use Components to create custom Program Change assignments for the pads - components.novationmusic.com/launchkey-mk3/custom-modes/new
I can only keep one custom drum pads layout on the Launchkey Mini at a time, which is very poor. With only 16 pads, I have multiple maps for the drum pads, but I have to change them through the Components app, instead of right on the controller, which is extremly clumsy.
Thanks for your feedback on this. As it's the smallest in the range, Launchpad Mini does have access to fewer features, apologies if you hadn't been aware of this. If you require access to more Custom Pad Modes, you may want to consider one of the larger controllers in the range as they have 4.
Launchkey's state is controlled by a SysEx message, transmit from the DAW. When connected to Ableton Live, Launchkey [Mk3] will automatically enter Device Mode this way. You can then assign the pots to Live’s Mixer (Volume, Pan, Sends) by holding the Shift button and pressing the labelled pads in the upper row.
It would be nice to have the ability to save custom mode edits to my own computer / laptops harddrive (to be used as backup). Sadly this is not possible with my Novation Launchkey 49 MK3 on 25-4-24.
You can use the 'Save' option to download Custom Modes to your computer. You can also use the standalone version of Components that can be downloaded from the menu at the top-right of Components, to manage your Launchkey offline.
thanks so much for ur great video, however , is there away that i can expand my 16 pads to control more program changes? or just each mode will control 16 program changes? also thanks so much for describing what u r explaining with ur voice, am totally blind, and i can understand ur videos, thanks
Many apologies for the delay in reply. I'm glad to hear that you found this video useful. Each Launchkey Mark 3 Custom Mode is limited to 16 bespoke pad assignments. I'm afraid It isn't possible to add more Control Change pad assignments to a Custom Mode but you could create another, separate Custom Mode with additional customised Pad controls. You can store up to 4 Custom Modes on Launchkey Mark 3 controllers, with the exception of Launchkey Mini Mark 3 which can store just 1 Custom Mode. John at Novation UK 🇬🇧
You can certainly create a Custom Mode with Program Change messages of your choice for the Pads but it's only possible to assign custom MIDI CC assignments for the Pots. If this is a feature that you require, you may want to take a look at SL MkIII.
Can you do a video about how can we use the 4th Pad's custom mode, please? The program chages 0-15 ...I still don't understand the way it works neither how to use the custom modes for pots and faders in the real life. It would be really helpful, thank you for the other vids!
Are you using the latest version of FL Studio? Dedicated integration for Launchkey [Mk3] which lets you trigger notes from the drum pads, control mixer volume, mixer pan and transport in FL Studio, was added to FL Studio version 20.9.2. John // Novation UK 🇬🇧

Hey can anyone tell me how to change the brightness of the pads on the launchkey mk3 mini?? It says go into the settings and use the octave button, but when I go into components settings It doesnt work. thanks
Settings mode means.....before plugging in the midi cable you should hold shift key and release it after plugged. Now u will be in settings mode , now u could press the octaves button to change brightness. Refer new manual.

OMG! This is awesome. I just gave up on my new Nektar T4 because of the kludgy control mapping scheme. Will be switching to Launhkey ASAP! Thank You.

is there any way to set the pots to default to device control? this is my main use and im tired of switching from pan every single time

shame you can't see the parameter name on the display like on the sl would have made a huge difference

Hi there, we're happy to help answer these questions - please reach out at bit.ly/NovationSupport.
Program changes would be used in older MIDI applications. If you're using something like Live, chances are you'll never use this.
Nice tutorial but when i change the fader 71 into cc1, it still shows up as cc71 when i use that. What i have to do now?
Hi there, please reach out to our Support Team at bit.ly/NovationSupport and they'll be able to help.

If I get an adapter and I download the standalone options , can I plug it to an amplifier and get it playing without the computer?
No. It's a MIDI controller, which simply sends data messages to the computer (or synthesizer/sound module/etc). No sound is created by the keyboard.
bro i unboxed my launchkey and my serial number isnt being recognized by your website lol
We're sorry to hear that. Have you been able to register? Still having problems?
