Doing anything for the first time usually means making a few mistakes (or many). My friends and I checked and adjusted valves+replaced a tensioner on a 2013 Yamaha FZ8 with nearly 50,000 mi on the clock and let it slip a tooth out of proper timing SEVERAL times. After 12 hours and lots of swear words we got it back together and running strong. Keep at it.

Hey Yammie. Took of the tappet cover on my 76 Honda CB550 yesterday to re-torque the head. Being a noob I followed the workshop manual which kindly leaves out a key step which resulted in me bending 3 valves when I re-fitted it!!!! Had to take the whole top end off today to replace all the exhaust valves. Steep learning curve!

Had to do this on my cbr900rr and many cbr600rr's. -What I learned/Tips shared below:
Bucket-over-shim engines are a PIA to service the valvetrain. Getting the chain over the camshaft sprockets and lining them up correctly is the hardest, as you have to line up the cams BEFORE you can actually tighten the cams in. They will rotate as you tighten them, so lining them up beforehand is tricky, especially if you didnt mark on the chain, cam gears and crank sprocket before disassembly. AND in order to adjust valve lash, you have to remove, install and time the cams every time you adjust. SO, BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE CAMS, I'd take out each shim, note which valve it came from, measure it and reinstall it. This way, once you get the cams in you can measure the valve clearance, do some maths to figure what shim size(s) you need, and then order them/get them ready. JUST BE VERY CAREFUL to keep track of where the shims came from and they go back to the same spot. I've messed that up twice and I had to do everything 2-3 times cause I had to guess on every valve and install everything and then measure and disassemble!
Advice for cam Install and Timing:
*****Disclaimer: I am not liable for any damage that may happen to your property while using the advice provided.
***You must install the the cams with sprockets and chain, lined up, before you can tighten down the camshaft caps/covers.
    1. Have the cam gears installed on the cams when you install them. *Dont forget medium strength thread locker!! - I use vice grips and a rag to hold the cams (not around a journal or lobe) while I tighten the sprockets to spec.
    2. Set crank to TDC (The "T" mark on the starter clutch you see through the access hole).
    3. Install and Time: Install the intake cam first with the mark lining up as close as you can (service manual provided below for illustration on timing marks) and push it as far left (if you were sitting on the bike) as you can to give clearance to bring the exhaust cam in and wrap the chain around it with the exhaust mark as close as possible to the correct timing. While adjusting/timing the intake and exhaust, drop the cam gear slightly off the sprocket by lifting the cam (by the end without a sprocket) and rotate the cam so you dont have to reinstall the cam over and over. Also remember to pull the slack out of the front side of the engine (side without tensioner) while lining up the cam sprocket marks.
    4. Install the tensioner. If you plan on using a manual tensioner, then for now just install the factory one to install and time the cams.
    5. Lube and install the cam caps. Tighten them down in about 4-5 passes, in the order written on the caps. After every pass check the timing marks and see if the cams are rotating into the right or wrong timing spot. *BE CAREFUL: Do not tighten the cams down with the wrong timing as you will be pressing a valve into a piston! The piston to valve clearance of these engines is a few mm! If you have a sprocket a tooth off, that's about 10 degrees off and a few mm of lift! Enough to cause interference! You will cause the interference when the caps are getting about 1-2mm from mating, so keep an eye on the timing marks when you get about 3-4mm away. You should be able to tell by then if you got the timing right.
    Extra tips for valve adjustment:
*Once you have the cams installed and timed and have measured all the valve clearances, mark the chain and sprocket(s) with a paint pin (after removing oil with acetone and a q-tip). This way you don't have to the any guessing came when you reinstall. Make sure to mark the crank one so you can index where the chain goes or else the top marks will be off and you'll have to guess again (if the chain rotates on the crank sprocket).
Page 180 of this cbr900rr service manual will give you more details on camshaft install and timing:
    mototribu.com/constructeur/honda/1996/1000cbr/doc/revuetechnique_900rr.pdf
I hope this was helpful, and good luck.
Let me know if you have any other questions along the way,
    Kind Regards,
    Dane - HondaWeaboo

Also! You will always get a little rattle on these bikes. I chased all around my cbr900rr. Replaced chain tensioner and cam chain and still there. Then while working on and running some other cbr600rr engines I noticed it's the oil pump chain making the noise. It has a lot of slack, by design. So, I wouldn't worry too much about some rattle noises on these old engines. But definitely inspect the cam chain length and valve clearances. If you get a manual tensioner, you can diagnose whether the noise is from the cam chain by slowing tightening the tensioner and seeing if the sound disappears. I did this and it did not change the sound I was hearing, so I put the stock tensioner back in.

Yammie Noob ... I can tell you without a doubt working on a new machine you are NOT familiar with can be a daunting task, each model of vehicle (including motorcycles) are engineered in unique and frustrating ways. NO ONE knows everything, and anyone who mocks or calls people out for not knowing something, is small minded and ignorant. Sorry BUT everyone has to start somewhere, and everyone had to learn the things they know, no one was born with the knowledge of how to rebuild or service and engine, let alone with anything else we learn.
I am 41 years old have been working on or around vehicles for about 35 years, now. When I was about, 5 years old, I was made by my step father to service my own dirt bike (with his supervision of course), his rules were, if you want to use and own machines you must learn to keep them running. I was hooked on working with machines, and always helped out around the shop where I could. I went to the Wall Stadium Speedway every weekend, and help hand tools and parts to the techs working on the cars and trucks there. From the age of 10 years old, I would find and rebuild or attempt to rebuild discarded machines. Like lawnmowers and trashed motorcycles/dirtbikes. I have been worked on everything from MRAPs to scooters and every type of vehicle in between, and I love it.
SO I commend you for doing your learning and making mistakes and learning from those mistakes on camera for the world to see. That in itself is more daunting then actually the doing work on an unknown machine.

Honestly one of the best mods/upgrades should be the suspension. At the very least, new springs. The 2002 919 was WAY undersprung stock. The front end is like a pogo stick. F4i forks are a direct swap. that with Racetech internals are great. Rear shock, an F3 will work and is very cheap, or there's always Penske or Ohlins.

I know the bike was rebuilt already and you did a great job, also I am sure the intended purpose of this video was not educational but I would like to tip you some knowledge my dudes (so you don't fuck up completely like I did once to my Honda, and it applies to ALL 4 stroke engines):
One mainly will need to look for top dead centre when it's time to adjust valves, but it's better to do it like this:
1 take the spark plug off (that will release air pressure from the piston so it will be easier to turn and it won't be so jumpy)
2 only turn the crank in the direction it is meant to turn when it is running. If you miss the T mark, too bad, keep going. Don't go backwards!
3 most important of all, the mark T is valid for top dead centre AND bottom dead centre, so before you do anything, stick something like a pencil (gently) through the spark plug hole so you make sure the piston really is at the top. And if it's not, turn the crank one more time until you see the T mark again. This will keep your piston (s) from exploding.

To be honest... i watch your video like watching my friends working on his first bike while I'm dringking his beer. Not helping... just watching him, maybe giving tips here and there...
