Are you transmitting through wfview here?

In this video I was sitting at the radio and just used the radio's mic, but wfview does indeed support remote transmit. Check out our manual for more information:

Just bought a 9700 specifically for learning linear sats. Question: why not use Gpredict to help with Doppler tracking? I’ve been testing that feature on NOAA birds w/SDR dongle and it seems to work well?

My issue with doing so is that you must disable satellite mode on the radio when you do it. This is because gpredict uses hamlib and hamlib does not understand satellite mode. With satellite mode disabled, you can no longer tune the radio and have the transmit and receive bands sync up. You are then relying on gpredict to take control. It’s even more infuriating if you are trying to work a linear (sideband) sat and you wish to tune around while gpredict/hamlib is flashing between VFO M/S manually Doppler correcting each VFO.
Had to edit this comment, almost forgot which video it was.

@@W6EL Thanks for the reply! Well, shoot. That is all very disappointing. I’m on Linux Mint, so I’m unaware of any other Doppler-tracking solutions. I had visions in my head of operating portable, only having to worry about pointing the antenna after picking a spot on the waterfall. Obviously I have no idea what I’m talking about. I’ve only had a handful of FM satellite contacts, which are neat, but I’m already frustrated by the crowding.

@@NC0Q you can learn to track the Doppler manually very easily. With modern waterfall rigs it is a very visual process. And the SAT mode on the 9700 means it will track the other side for you, compensating the correct way. Or you can learn how to do it with gpredict. I think there’s some kind of “manual tune” method that will work.
RE the FM satellites, try at night. Much less congestion. 73!
