It was a few years ago when I was awestruck by the "Twin Dragons" at Kennin-ji Temple.
Master Da Yoda took me and Master Pyon-ta on a sightseeing trip to Kyoto.
Two dragons freely soaring through the heavens, protecting a jewel (dragon ball) together.
The one who painted these twin dragons was artist Junsaku Koizumi.
This summer, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Koizumi’s birth, an art gallery and a projection of light and sound illumination were held at Kenninji-Temple in Kyoto.
That night, many people gathered at Kennin-ji. Some gazed at the artwork, while others sat and admired the garden, each spending their time as they pleased.
Walking through a spacious room facing the garden, I admired the fusuma (sliding door) paintings.
A set of paintings showed an endless expanse of lotus flowers in full bloom stretching far into the distance.
It felt as though I was crossing a bridge over a pond, gazing at blooming lotuses.
Also, a paining of a fully blossomed cherry tree and a full moon shining beyond the tree was so beautiful.
I felt as if I was enjoying a hanami (flower viewing) right there.
From the framed view of the katōmado (floral-shaped window) in the corridor connecting the abbot's quarters to the main hall, I could see the "KareSansui (zen garden)"
The light illuminating the KareSansui garden gradually spread like waves, then became clouds and disappeared into the sky.
As I made my way toward the main hall, I was captivated by a stunning projection that masterfully balanced stillness and motion.
Lines morphed into waves as a dragon ascended from the vast ocean into the sky. The clouds swirled, giving rise to a thunderstorm that slowly dissipated, unveiling a serene, sunlit blue sky. Overseeing this entire spectacle were three statues, motionless and unwavering.
The twin dragons on the ceiling forged a dynamic link between heaven and earth through the projection and sound. In striking contrast to this movement, the statues, as transcendent figures, embodied an unshakable stillness, silently watching over the world below.
    Zen is cool.
That night, countless travelers from around the world, captivated by its undeniable allure, had gathered as well.
Junsaku Koizumi possesses a rare ability to draw the viewer into the very essence of the worlds he paints. His unmatched mastery in breathing life into each scene is nothing short of extraordinary.
I may not know what Zen is, but I felt as if my heart had journeyed across a pond of lotuses, gazed at the cherry blossoms, and traveled alongside the dragons freely soaring through heaven and earth.
