      I still dislike Ardlings a lot. It feels like a catch all for Beast people. As someone who loves playing Tabaxi, Kenku and Owlins it seems to be replacing them. Maybe because they are lazy and dont feel the need to make stat blocks and individual histories of the races or maybe its because they want to streamline them. Either way it seems like a copout

      @Kaelyn91 Год назад +13

      Race is too small in its nomenclature to denote what is being discussed. Race, in the sense of Biology, is commonly used interchangeably with Subspecies, but has been known to also describe differences in individuals within the same subspecies. Species is used to describe organisms based primarily on ability to breed with one another. While that typically doesn't hold in fantasy settings, Species is the most accurate term to describe the differences in player characters as we know them.

    • @Kaelyn91
      @Kaelyn91 Год назад +13

      That being said, Lineage or Heritage would be generally acceptable. I doubt they would use Ancestry since Pathfinder is already associated with that term.

      @@Kaelyn91 You explicitly stated "species" doesn't hold in fantasy settings. Logically, if a concept doesn't hold, then it's inaccurate, false. It is because of the existence of half-breeds that makes "ancestry" actually more sensible, and we get the fun little ABCs to go with it.

    The Dragonborn breath weapon difference from Fizbans that they also added here is:

    I think I remember hearing that Tolkin used the word race because it sounded more aesthetically correct than species for the nature of the work. I kinda agree as species does sound to sff. I think Pathfinder 2nd uses ancestry, which I think sounds better for the fantasy aesthetic.

      @@Xynth25 In my opinion, Spiritual weapon isn't really a powergaming combo. In conjunction with spirit guardians it is a very solid, very obvious combo that a lot of people employ to good success and fun. It doesn't perform the same as Polearm Master+Great Weapon Master+Sentinel, or Crossbow Expert+Sharpshooter or Drow Half-Elf+Elven Accuracy+Devil's Sight+Shadow Sorc+Hexblade Sorlock. Optimized powergaming annihilates it. My point being, it feels to me more like a bread and butter pillar of the class than an out of line broken combo that needs to be reined in. The version in this UA seems truly awful. I feel like I'd rather concentrate on Bless. Maybe it's okay at levels 3-4 but once you get higher level stuff it will be the same as concentrating on something like Silence, except Silence might actually be useful in specific contexts. I really hope it doesn't stick.

    The issue with Scholar and using the Wisdom bonus for the skill is, a 1st level Cleric will likely already have a number of those skills. So either a player who wants to take scholar at level 2 needs to intentionally not take those skills at level 1 (which seem clunky and counter to Crawford's talk about making things easy on new players), or they need to change Scholar to let you assign that bonus to already known skills.

So if you have a speed of 30, the extra movement gained by your Dash would be 50 ft at level 1 for a Runner Ardling. So your total available movement for that turn is 80 ft. Rename the Ardling to Beastfolk, or possibly keep it as “Beastfolk” may be regarded as an offensive term
    Bring back the Aasimar and give them the og Ardling lineages, while allowing them the choice between being half-animal or humanoid angels
    This way, people can play strictly animal-like characters, and humanoid angelic or angelic-animal characters
    While they’re at it, they can create a Fallen Lineage for Aasimars (with chill touch, inflict wounds, and the like) and an Ascended Lineage for Tieflings (basically the “good” Tieflings who have access to sacred flame and healing spells)

    So if you increase your speed by 20ft when you take the dash action, youll benefit from that twice within the turn. So a dashing level 3 racer ardling could move 100ft.

    Not only does Species sound more like a sci-fi thing, it also implies that half-orcs and half-elves (and any other half-something character) are sterile as different species cannot reproduce and produce a fertile offspring so species is very much the wrong term. If you really don't want to use the word race (which is the actual correct term) then use something like lineage or ancestry.

    On the last bit, about the required time of 16 hours between each long rest. I can understand and appreciate the need to have such an established ruling, so players can't just "spam" long rests for some purpose that seems game-breaking. On the other hand, I usually find that taking a long rest at all is often a gamble. Maybe it's just the way my brother runs the game, but we are usually encouraged to just try to plow through events and locations, without a rest. A short rest may eventually be in view if we're at the brink of death, and out of spell slots. If we take a long rest, that's an extra 8 hours the enemy have to follow through with their evil plans, or for us to get ambushed, or those kidnapped civilians get sacrificed but we were too busy sleeping!

    • @torrent6181
      @torrent6181 Год назад +1

      100%, long rests can be very balanced if the DM handles them well. If there needs to be a hard rule that restricts them, I would prefer it to be that you can only take a Long Rest once per day AND you must pass at least 10 (or so) hours between each LR.

      I kinda dislike that, because there's been times my party has known we were going to be up early the next morning for some reason, so we want to have an earlier night. This ruling would technically prevent that. It feels like they're trying to regulate it too much. If a player is arguing with the DM, they need to just add something reminding the DM of rule 0, and to shut it down.

    Just pointing this out. The Dash action has been revamped. Your speed doesn't double when using it anymore. Instead, you gain a second Move. Meaning, if each move can only use one movement type at a time if you have more than one. A Dash is a separate movement altogether. As an example, at 1st level, your speed is still 30 feet by default. But when you Dash, you can move 50 feet on top of that. By 17th level, if you use your normal Move and then Dash, you can move up to 150 feet in a single turn, which is bonkers.

    • @theBSDude44
      @theBSDude44 Год назад +1

      This is just a rephrasing of the Dash action in the current 5E players handbook: "When you take the Dash action, you gain extra movement for the current turn. The increase equals your speed, after applying any modifiers."
      That is, when you take the Dash action, you increase your available movement by your speed, nothing about doubling, so Move + Cunning Action Dash + Hasted Action Dash = 1+1+1 (=3) not 1x2x2 (=4) [The Haste effect of doubling your speed is unrelated to the Dash action, for a total of 2+2+2 (=6) not 2x2x2 (=8)].

    Joking aside, the other changes with Long Rest are pretty great as they give sort of a balancing mechanic to rest casting so that casters aren't just cheesing interpretation of RAW to gain a free casting of Mage Armor, but gaining a few spell effects at the expense of having a somewhat longer rest time.

    One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that all the Goliath lineage options are based on attack rolls, meaning they work with Eldritch Blast as it is. If Eldritch Blast stays the same then Frost's Chill, even with its' prof. bonus per long rest limits, will be insane for its' movement speed slow. You can basically have your cake and eat it too by using Agonizing Blast, but also reducing their speed by 10 which is functionally very similar to knocking them back 10 feet.
    For a fun punting build, create a Dao Genie patron Warlock with Frost Giant lineage and take the Crusher feat as your first level feat (if that's not possible, take it later). You can push enemies 5 feet per Eldritch Blast due to Crusher + Dao Genie's Bludgeoning damage and slow them down by 10 feet. Knockback can increase to 15 feet if you use Repelling Blast, which is high enough to cause falling damage.
    Also Cloud Giant's ability is incredibly strong. It is a way better Misty Step and might honestly be too strong on casters since it isn't a leveled spell and thus you can cast a leveled spell after using it as your bonus action.

    I don't think they're ever going to comment on it, but the speed thing for small races is almost certainly because being "Small" in D&D (or being a Halfling) was basically describing mechanics for being a little person, or for being a person with some kind of disability that affects growth. They don't want to be in the business of saying "there are two kinds of people - tall, fast people who can hold longbows, and short, slow people who can dart between tall peoples' legs", although they'll be fine with having similar traits that are less similar to actual real-life people (especially real-life groups that are sometimes marginalized). Like, I'm sure they have no problem saying that pixies are Tiny and therefore can do those things.
    It's the same reason that many species now let you choose Small or Medium. Frankly I think if they were redesigning D&D from the ground up today they would not include the Small category at all, and halflings, gnomes, goblins, kobolds, etc. would all be Medium.

I typically go with any period that the players are not engaged in combat or doing tasks that would otherwise force them to expend spell slots or abilities - then that’s a period of rest. They aren’t exercising those abilities and there have a chance to recover. Those periods can extend past 8 hours, they could be at a festival and looking for clues or socializing - I think that the rules for long tests are somewhat arbitrary but we only ever look at the minimum or rushed outcome.

    10:40 It says dash action which is separate from normal movement. I think all it means is when you kick it in gear and burn your action to dash you can add 20 ft at that time. Otherwise your movement is the same as everyone else.
    edit: I agree with your nitpick on the movement speed. If you are going to make everyone the same make them all the same.

    I think that the long rest wait time thing should exist but be reduced to a 8-12 hours. The only other idea I would have for it being that if your rest is interrupted by a fight, the time until your next long rest is not interrupted. So if you are awoken at 7 by a fight and go back to sleep after the fight to get your full rest, then waking up at say 9 instead of 8 then the time until your next long rest is not affected. My reasoning for this is so that everyone is aware of when they can get their next long rest by the time they go to sleep the day before without having to add extra math on to compensate for one fight.

    I don't know about speeding tryceratops either, but a velociraptor is as tall as a chicken and not those killer reptiles from Jurassic Park. That beast was somewhat a species of oversized denonychus.
    But I can picture in my mind an antropomorph tryceratops which is analog to a minotaur. Something like a bulky scale-covered humanoid with a three-horned head.

    Quick clarification: I think Crawford meant that they didn't want orcs to be the only tough guys race. They made half-species to be closer to the base race, and made orcs fill the half-orc place. Goliaths are a second option to be a tough guys, and as part of that, get theming from different giants. I like it, its similar to dragonborn or tieflings where they get theming based on a subset of a particular monster

    Ironically using "species" erases the kinship between the fantasy races and creates more separation between them. Not sure it's less controversial either ironically

    4:50 Both scholar and thaumaturge should give an additional cantrip because if you don't get martial weapons you need cantrips to fight with.

    Damn, you had me dreaming they fixed Long Rests. They just need to make them only available in towns/villages! None of this 16 hour nonsense. Thanks as usual Bob!

      I completely agree with making long rests less available in the 'wild'.
      That's how I run my games. I have a modified long rest. Not as robust as a true long rest.

      How would you address Wilderness Campaigns or Mega-Dungeon. I have been in campaigns where it was literally weeks between visits to towns/villages or a dungeon delve that spanned multiple sessions. The only way to resolve that would be to add 'camps' to that list of rest areas and give alternative rules for long dungeon rests. Considering they seem to be moving more towards simplicity and the reduction of situational rules, the latter seems unlikely.

    Speaking entirely from personal experience, I see what the long rest but is going for. There have occasionally been situations where the party finishes a rest going into early hours of the morning at say 10AM, THEN they rest the same day at a decent hour after a grueling combat at 8pm for early job the next Day
    They got the 16 hours from 24 - 8.
    The problem is it necessitates mathing things out if say you have a few days of down time.
    My suggestion, as I see kinda what they're going for, after the end of a long rest, you must wait 12 hours before taking a long rest again. It makes math super simple, while still addressing a concern.

    So, some massive spell changes are that Guidance is a reaction when a creature within 10 feet fails a check, Resistance is exactly the same as Guidance but for saves, and Prayer of Healing now also grants a short rest, so it's actually useful now.

    But race is the correct usage of the word.. We use it wrong black and white are not races. Humans are all the same race.
