  • The Ford Thunderbird model was introduced in 1955 and was initially conceived as a two seater personal sports luxury car. As years went on, the lack of practicality provided by a two seater was something that Ford noticed and decided to make the Thunderbird a larger four seater vehicle in 1958 with the same sports luxury theme. Sales immediately doubled from the two seater cars and it ensured the longevity of a now iconic model. By the time the car you see here was release the year was 1965 and the Thunderbird was on its fourth generation.
This particular car is a nice example of a 1965 Ford Thunderbird convertible. The convertible top on the car is fully automatic with the exception of the manual header locks and is entirely operated from the drivers seat with a switch in the center console. The top is an impressive feat of engineering for a 60’s car and hides away completely inside the boot when down. The boot of the car operates hydraulically from the same switch to gain access in and out. The top on this car is in lovely condition with tan coloured Mercedes Benz style cloth and looks as good up as it does down.
The exterior of the car is in good condition all round. The paintwork is nice and shines well with only minor blemishes. Like wise the chrome bumpers and trims are all in good condition. The car is presented nicely in the factory Burgundy with tan interior and convertible top. The interior design of these T-birds really was ahead of their time. You will notice the space age look bucket seats and wrap around rear seat. The dash cluster features eyeball style factory gauges and aircraft style switches. Luxuries include power windows, power steering and power brakes. This car also features factory air conditioning which was a rare option on a 1965 Thunderbird. It also has tilt away steering column to allow for easy access when getting in and out of the car. A notable feature is the sequential rear indicators which was new for 1965 where the tail lights flash in sequence towards the outside of the car when the indicators are on.
Under the bonnet is the original 390ci V8 paired to the original Cruise-o-matic 3 speed automatic transmission. The car drives nicely on the road, the engine starts and runs well and the transmission shifts smoothly through the gears as it should. Suspension wise, comfort was the main focus for the T-Bird designers. These cars tend to smoothly float down the road with nice soft springs for a luxurious feeling and comfortable ride. Power steering makes the car easy to get around in and park in those tight spaces. Power assisted disk brakes were new for 1965 and ensure you can pull things up easily if required. The car sits on a set of optional Kelsey Hay wire wheels all round with wide white wall tyres. This car would make a great weekend cruiser for someone what wants to drop the top and drive off into the sunset.
