Cantrell is a genius. He can come up with such beautiful dark melodies and lyrics..
As I learn more and more about Alice In Chains I'm very impressed at how much of it he was at the helm of
Layne wrote most of jar of flies’ lyrics I think.
@@jack-uv6mt With the exception of No Excuses and Don't Follow, yes.
Wow what a surprise, the Layne vs Jerry thing even comes into this stuff. Jerry wrote 80% of the music and Layne wrote 80% of the lyrics. I'm glad you like them, I'm sure he'd appreciate all of you dill holes making such an effort to demean his work and give the credit to Jerry.
yjjeeper1 wtf are you talking about you moron
Alice In Chains has always had some haunting, genuine and interesting lyrics. Paired with the melodies in the guitar bass and vocals as well as tight rhythm, they’re really one of the greatest groups I’ve ever heard. Jerry and layne seemed to be the driving force but mike and Sean were vital too. Truly a once in a lifetime band.
*clink
"Cuz everything Alice In Chains does is one half step lower than the rest of the world "😂😂😂😂😂😂👌👌👌👌👌👌
i should have said at least!
Durr hurr hurr
Lmao hahaa
Really? The rest of the world? Hendrix, Stevie Ray, tons of others as well.
I think this is one of your best teaching video so far! I've learned rooster nutshell and now I stay away. All from your Channel! You are such a great help to me I hope you read this comment and understand that
thanks so much for hanging out DSN :) cheers to you!
It’s good to see you getting frustrated, gives me hope.
Looking forward to mastering this, sounds brilliant on the acoustic.
Cheers Ryan
i know you guys like it when I mess up, that's why I leave it :) good luck Justin!
@@RyanLendt But you persevered and succeeded. That is why you are the way you are now with the guitar. You over came your problems and moved on. A lot of people just do not try hard enough and then wonder why they cant play something. I am a drummer now since i fell in love with drums the day i actually got a kit and played one. I do not play guitar anymore. I ran into a problem today. All 8th notes on the hi hat and ride and then try to add the money beat snare and bass.. Head fudge. I stuck with it till my little brain got it. For someobyd whose foot was stuck on the cloes hi hat for months that was not some small achievment. Fight through the issues and move on. Or give up like some people do. Ohhhhh......its too hard. I am not gifted. I cant do this. Blah blah
Best song ever, made my day when i seen it now has a lesson!
quite a privilege to make your day Kayla :)
Thanks for teaching so many great 90's songs!
sometime around the 90's all music started being forever current :) you're welcome!
LOVE this song.
me too :)
Classic Ryan home-run lesson! Love those riffs! 👌👍
thanks Kow!
Absolutely awesome my friend!!!
Thanks Gavin!
Dude, ya GOTSTA play it all in full after each lesson! Everyone wants ta hear a once-through. ✌️
I know, but I cannot. For reasons.
Ryan Lendt ...
I THINK I gotcha ... I thought cover versions were allowed (unless it’s a monetization thing). Who the Christ knows w YT anymore.
Great verbal teaching techniques (making up words that actually get the message across). Good stuff. ✌️👍
Copyright on RUclips is stupid right now, this is why he doesn't. He'd lose his whole channel
You’re the best man, Lovely music taste and not ever a dull moment in your vids 🙌
thank you Skylar :) and thanks for hanging out!
Great lesson Ryan thanks!
welcome!
Thank you, Ryan! Anything Cantrell is always appreciated. It was my Birthday yesterday so this is a great present to sit and learn this. 😎
It is an honor to be a part of your birthday 'me time' :)
Great videos man, you have a lot of songs that I wanted to learn and couldn't find anywhere. Keep it up!
Thanks Lolo - glad to hear it!
Nice! I'm always looking for guitar lessons on awesome songs!

Good job man I really appreciate you sharing this

Yo dude, I just wanted to say this video was really helpful and your content is really high quality :)) I hope you keep making videos like this
I appreciate that very much AP thanks for the shout!
Great lesson, well explained
thanks friend
Excellent! thank you for the lesson!
you're most welcome, Ms Meow - thanks for stopping by :)
I just stumbled across this channel. Great lesson, and supremely entertaining. Dude, you are hilarious…. and a darn good teacher too
welcome to the party kat!
Alice and Chains has always been my favorite Band since a kid. Lane and Jerry their voices together and Jerry's guitar playing just made music magic together. It's a ashame how Lane had to go. And I just wonder what other things could have been from Lane still here. I almost feel bad for their new singer who is amazing but always being compared to Lane is ashame but he was one of a kind.
yep. not a terribly fair situation for him. But he does a great job.
Dude, this is awesome.
thanks dude.
This is the funniest tutorial ever !
I just loved it 🤣🤣🤣
why thanks my bud!
Good Job!
thanks Daniel :)
Ryan, Awesome video. I usually jump on your vids for Pearl Jam. So it was cool to see you breaking down AIC tunes. Been listing to AIC and Jerry Cantrell solo stuff recently. Jar of Flies probably my fav album from AIC. Been reading a lot about Layne and his struggle with drugs. Such a talented voice but lost too soon. But at least we all still have his music which gives others inspiration to pick up the old guitar and do our best to play these tunes. And your vids certainly help make sense of all these incredible songs. Keep up the fantastic guitar work!!!
thanks for hanging out Jack!
Thanks for the lesson broseph! I shall subscribe!!
welcome to the party Rich - thanks for the shout!
Stumbled upon this video by accident...instant subscribe. Great channel. Thanks man
hey thanks a whole bunch Tim - welcome to the party and thanks for being here!
Almost 4-years down the line still awesome!!
:)
Thanks Ryan! Awesome lesson, jar of flies is such an underrated album, along with this song!!
thanks Uncle :)
Underrated by who?
I wish someone would create a RUclips channel that dealt with only the vocal arrangement of AIC songs. Great job on the lesson!! You are very thorough.
I think that someone should be you Evo - thanks for hanging out!
ruclips.net/video/O_RxONpLthg/видео.html not only the vocals, but nice analysis
FYI in case it has not been mentioned here before. There is no other guitarist in the old line up of alice in chains. It is just jerry cantrell. The unplugged version added scott olsen. To help fill out the sound and cover the multitude of over dubs preset in their recordings, i suppose.
The current line up has william duvall as vocals/guitar, replacing layne. And what a fantastic job he does giving his own take on things.
thanks mr onioin :)
Epic vid!
thanks Ryan!
"In your troop" LOL. Glad I searched this one and you came up man.
as am I tango, as am I :)
Thank you
you're welcome
Great vid, thanks man.
thanks jeeper :)
@@RyanLendt hey bro did you ever do the riff for Rotten Apple?
Another great song. Sounds great on your guitar. Jerry Cantrell created some beautiful sounds. Thank you Ryan!
You're so very welcome Mud! I thought you'd like that one
THANK YOU! Haha earlier I watched a video by Rick Beato for top 20 acoustic intros. He only played the high part and I was lost! “That’s not how I play it!”
well that explains why everyone is watching this video lately! and why one guy said I did it wrong, I guess I didn't even bother with the high part :) thank you for solving many mysteries Justin!
That’s why I’m here too!!! Lol
Same!!
Awesome. And I like that you don't edit over the mistakes made as they will better remind us of the harder parts or often made mistakes we may make along the way as well as remind us that we don't suck when we too keep making those mistakes when learning. Don't change the way you make vids bro. They are all great! Thanks again
Thank youuu
youuuuu're welcome thanks for being here :)
I've watched a bunch but this one had me laughing out loud at 6am. This one I don't have memorized but like you said, it makes sense. Thanks for your time and good day sir..
:) cheers to you Chris
thank you my man. & another thank you for making me feel human in the intro. sheeeew
cheers mark :)
Aaaah thank you AIC ROCKS!!!
woohoo!
Nice LESSON ✌👍🍀
why thank you Norman :)
I thumbed up 3x! YESSS!
thanks Mike :)!
Respect to the KING
Burger?
Ryan Lendt Beyond Meat burger :-)
Frogs is a great tune too
Good master dude
thanks dude :)
Gorgeous song...dark like my soul 💕😝
and dark like the dark kermits
Great lesson Ryan! Alice is my favorite band. Because of them I pretty much play everything 1 step down lol 😆
it's just one note, but it makes EVERYTHING so much easier to sing!
That was fun to watch 😂
Thank you for the lesson! This is the 6th one I’ve watched since all this mess.
well thanks for hanging out Jim :) stay strong...
sounds pretty close! nice job!
thanks man!
I keep most of my guitars in drop d . Especially my white guitar cause it's necks been broke for over twenty years. . Keeps the tension off and much of the music i listen to is in that 🗝. Thank you
Thanks for all the great breakdowns on all the AIC tunes. Keep them coming!!
Maybe some stuff off of the Black Gives Way To Blue album ? 😎
Thanks Dave! I got one coming up for you in the very near future :)
No one cares about post-Layne Chains
Dubble J , Layne’s vocals are amazing and can never be duplicated but that’s not the only reason to listen to AIC. I never try to be the “Man in the Box” pun intended.
Cheers 🍻
@@DaveChevelle Fair enough, but nevertheless No Layne, No Chains
No ifs or buts, just a great funny lesson. Thank you!
thank you Roger :) cheers!
Thank you so much. This is the best lesson I have ever watched. Like Layne could make something ugly sound beautiful, you make the beautiful sound funny. I wish, never ever your woman fights you.
Layne had a way... thanks SP :) I hope the same for your woman haha
1st) you're a natural entertainer. 2nd) I expected this song to be so straightforward, given how simple it sounds my 3rd) I would LOVE to see some theory explanation from you (addressing some of the stuff you mention here ((i.e. what makes a given chord a D add 9 or sus 9, etc)) ).
thanks for all that scott :)
Hey I think we use the same picks. Dunlop green? Loving all your AIC lessons, my main guitar lives at half a step down now.
yep - with the turtle on it. you have good taste.
Love your vids.. could you do the main riff in Rotten apple?
of course - thanks Lucas!
This song sounds fantastic on a 12 string. I am fairly certain that is what Jerry is using on the album.
I bet you're right. I don't own a 12 string :/
Cantrells unique timing signatures are easier in quarter step down lapsteel tuning 7/8 442 mght
Love your lessons! Can you please do the Holly Roller by MLB?
what's up Janek - thank you! sure :)
Thanks! Please do This id Shangrila if you have some time :)
🤣🤣🤣 I love you man🤘
I love you too ryry
@@RyanLendt no lie... I was first chair trumpet, took piano lessons.... been self taught on guitar for like 9 years now. I have not found a better teacher or experience with learning. You bring this to the table in such an amazing way. I sit here alone cracking up with your videos. Sometimes I have to put the guitar down cause I'm just laughing so hard. Keep it up man. Your a light in this dark world. 🖤🤘
man you’re a cool dude
thanks friend.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
:)
This is great. Thanks. You're adorable!
aw thank you Lola :) cheers!
I've always enjoyed your vids but if you started off each one with actually playing through the song a bit it would be helpful.
it never seems to occur to me to do that...
@@RyanLendt , @Markeje is right, hugely helpful (and always appreciated) when you do!
@@RyanLendt personally i appreciate you thanking all the people who asked for it but after that if you could play it a bit too that'd be cool
I want to start by saying that your videos are always extremely helpful - numerous cases (e.g. "Burden In My Hand"). However for this song when I slow it down, what I hear when you are doing the A-D-G (3-2-0, at 2:25 of your video) is 3-0-0; am I right? Thanks again -
greetings William and thank you for the kindness - I fear it's been far too long since I've made this video for me to be able to make a helpful response, so I'll just say that I certainly get stuff wrong from time to time, and you should trust your judgement if you feel strongly about it :)
There is definitely a "sus" on the "scooping" part left out but isnt too hard to figure out aha thanks!
awesome - thanks for chiming in pro :)
I don’t know why “The Scoop” made me laugh so hard but I’ll never call it anything else again.
Thanks for the great lesson for a great song
Two whole steps into the one chord!
First couple notes is the same as shine by collective soul
fun
I always play the high version
rock on Michael
hi, according to the seattle live version, maybe the 1st string is also a C? In that case there is no need to punish the pinky finger
I think this is a fabulous notion that ought to be investigated by any interested reader - thanks for the thought Beto
Tricky one
indeed
Hey Ryan I might be late but what about whale and wasp from the sam album? I’m sure lots of people would appreciate it
Funniest and my personal favorite guitar teacher
thanks for that Ab :) and thanks for the suggestion!
You talk about a "high part" and a "low part" but the song was played on a 12 string guitar, so the low part also sounds an octave higher.
hmmmm, I feel like I know that deep down inside my soul. maybe I didn't communicate that, or maybe I don't! Either way, thanks for chiming in Viko
You are great guitar player and I really love your job. But, ı have a request from you. When you stard the video, you can play the whole part of the song and afterthat you can stard to teach us. If you do this, It will be awesome!.. And by the way , I'm writting from Turkey. You loves so much here. Your speach is understandable.. Good work !!
thanks OT! the fact is, if I do that I won't make any money off my videos, and this is how I make about half of my living. Say hello to Turkey for me, and thanks for hanging out :)
@@RyanLendt You're welcome.. I got it and ı thank you for your answer. 👍🏻👏
Ryan. Kick ass. Glad you talked about tuning D# to C#. I been Trying to Play/ Learn this Tune all day after watching your Video. I learn a lot from your Videos. Thanks for all The Lessons.
Happy New Year.
Nutshell back in the day

what's up friend! I'm glad to know that you liked that, and even happier I gave you something fun to do all day :)
Ryan Lendt
Thanks Ryan. Tried it from your lesson on my 12 string. Just the Beginning.
Have to learn the rest. Happy Holidays Bud

Hi :) Why not play the Cadd9 on the "high part" as D-open / G string-5th fret (C) / B string - 8th fret (G)/ E -open ie., 9-1-5-3
I'll watch it again in a year; it's too complicated for my today's level)))
I bet you'll surprise yourself when that time comes :)
Ryan Lendt, what kind of Taylor acoustic is that? Model?
410ce
At 2:25 you don't put your pointing finger at 4th string (originally D string).... just leave this string empty
Good teacher can I have a hit of whatever you are having lol 🤪
:)
When you were saying the other guitarist, do you mean William Duvall? Who is also the new lead singer
was he really? I wondered where that gent came from
No, Ned Sneebly
Is Scotty Olsen the other guitarist you’re thinking of?
believe so
Awesome at about 9min that where I was trying to figure where to go. Not really a song to play alone.
i think after a doughnut and some spaghetti one could do anything!
@@RyanLendt Breakfast of champions!
Wouldn't it still sound okay with standard tuning playing this song?
i'm dubious, but if you can pull it off all the power to you
Back again Ryan with more Soundgarden for the list slaves and bulldozers !!
hahaha more early soundgarden of course!
My question one who cannot play the 2 finger bar chord how are they going to stretch that far
the only answer, i'm afraid to say, is just keep trying. It takes time and patience
Ryan Lendt so true well I can do the 2 finger bar chord the opening riff is a bit hard I will try thanks man and stay safe
4:03 😂🤘🏻
this guy is aight..
aw thanks Ben :)
This is a half step down?. That's strange being Layne had such incredible vocal range.
yes, but not so strange considering all AIC songs are a half step down
55 guys don't like Alice...and can't play this song....Nice tutorial !!
bahaha thanks JLYF
Yo guys I have an awesome suggestion, here me out:
It's not that it's to hard for me nahh, I'm a guitar legend right here yeah, but Instead of playing that fast strummy part on the intro and verse I do this:
The regular d to cadd9 and than on the rythim of the song lift my pinky and strum a little, lift my pointer finger and strum a little and than go 3,2,open on the E string.
I'm such a guitar legend that I don't need awesome melodies going 800mph on the guitar.
Im a fucking wizard!!
Or maybe it's time for I stay away campfire edition idk...
hehe
Man Alice in chains really wrote some of the most confusing songs. They definitely took things a little further then most bands to make them stand out. Not much I can't play but Alice is just one of them bands that their sh is just hard lol. (Should mention) I lopped my pointer finger off so my pinky is actually my main finger now xD all my cords are ass backwards but It forced me to telegraph my fingers to the next cord or note.
that's quite a story of triumph kirk thanks for sharing
My soul looked threw a window and Jerry Cantrell was on the other side.
i hear ya :)
William Duvall is the other guitar player
thank you Cecil :)
