- I'm pretty sure that when you guys got your hands on Toby Fox's Undertale sequel, Deltarune, you had on your mind how the genocide route would turn out in this game. And when you did get the chance to try it, you find yourself unable to kill anything at all. In fact, that is what the game is preventing you to do. But why? Just watch the video and close out all of those nasty doujins on your other tabs. We're gonna check out what's going on with the Deltarune Chapter 1 and why it seems like it is forcing you to do a pacifist route.

Please don't tell me you spent your entire Halloween playing Undertale 2 just like I did. Why did I do this? The game feels pretty short that it feels like something I wanna speedrun just for the heck out of it. I ain't doing it to make theories. Then again, I don't know how to do all of those dialogue skips in the original Undertale game, and I'm not sure if it applies here as well. I mean, I guess I could have done some practice runs but I ended up checking out some new Touhou doujins. There's this Futo one and WHOAAAAAAAA IT MADE MY SHIRT GET BLOWN INTO SMITHEREENS. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED EVERYTHING I WAS DOING. I SUPLEXED THE CHICKEN I THAWED OUT BACK INTO THE FREEZER AGAIN BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT'S UP. I GRAZED MYSELF SO MANY TIMES THAT I got pretty hungry and just ordered food. Rip my money again. What have I done? Please. Get my game too on Steam. Actually better yet. Please give me a jobbbbbbb. I'll program anything for you. Even if it's just a dumb website where you click on your waifu's head to give them a headpat. Or a program where you just flush the toilet. I don't care. Just give me burgers and save meeee from unemploymenttttt!!!

Not by himself that is. The only way we managed the genocide so far is by using someone else, That is Noelle.
Is like in chapter one he is not allowed to kill no matter how much he tries. But in chapter 2 he realizes ''You know what, If I can't kill, Then someone else will do it for me.''
This is actually quite exciting for ''genocide'' runs of the game. We are not by ourselves anymore. We will be Corrupting other people into doing the bad thing for us. which I think is almost 2x more evil than what we did in Undertale.

Toby literally said there is only one ending, your choices don't matter. Check his twitter, he posted a Q&A on it where he states there is only one ending and will ever only be one. He's already written all of the story, he's been writing it while making undertale. He's been writing Deltarune since 2012. (Although it took him making demo/chapter 1 3 years, and no the next chapters are at 0%. he hasn't coded anything further nor done more graphics. I strongly suggest reading his Q&A as he answers a lot!!! Like how the full game might actually be impossible unless he gets a team together, and even then we might not get the full game, but we may in 999 years for all we know.

I think what it means really, is the fact that no matter what you do, your choices will not change the future because you do NOT have a choice per say. It's all being controlled for you, you can't control other's consequences. While undertale was all about how all your choices have consequences, Deltarune is basically about how no matter what you do, the final consequences, the ending will always be the same. Just like toby stated in his Q&A that the game will only have one ending. (Check his twitter.)

Well its not easy to make the game
If you look into the game code, you'll see that it's deliberate that you cannot kill anyone. There are files missing for deaths, same with the EXP system. You can't kill anyone cause Toby didn't want too much of the main story to be revealed.

Wrong. Toby has said in a tweet that Chapter 1 is complete, minor things may change but for the most part everything is exactly how it will stay - you won't ever be able to kill anyone. "Your choices don't matter"

Story telling. Delta Rune is the antithesis of Undertale, whereas one let's your choices shape the story to varying degrees, the other takes away the choices in order to show the difference between them.
It's not about being "bullshit" or unique (which, it really isn't).
Heck the game outright tells you choices don't matter in this.

The greater outcomes may not change, but the things IN BETWEEN are well worth fighting for. I gladly chose to be a good friend to Ralsei and respect his wishes. This CHOICE made Lancer king and ended the tyranny of his dad. It reconciled the relationship between Lightners and Darkners. It enabled me to say GOODBYE to Ralsei. These things may not matter in the greater scheme of things, but they matter to ME.
I'm hoping thats the theme Toby's ultimately going for. Whatever entity (Gaster? Chara? Both? Neither? Some other unknown entity?) is slapping all the important choices out of our hands trying to prove a point, maybe things can change with enough of the smaller ones.
Guess we'll have to find out whenever the full game comes out.

Funny thing is, I think I prefer this. The sheer amount of possibilities in Undertale was impressive but the player was often penalized for trying anything other than the Pacifist route. Here, you can do as you please without being called a monster.

That's kind of the message of Undertale, we allways kills the enemies on every game, but we didnt really care about it, Undertale makes us think about it, making us see how we are monster...

Yeah, but that's a major part of the experience.
It makes you feel bad for what you've done;
it makes you attached to the characters.
Besides, if you really want to, it is possible to truly reset the game after a genocide run;
True Reset resets the game to the moment you fall into the underground.
Or, if you really, really want to, you could mess with the files.
The entire experience truly adds meaning to how you do things,
and gives you an option to if you want to be good or bad.
In Deltarune, although you aren't penalized for trying to do anything other than pacifist,
you also don't change anything at all when not doing pacifist;
at that point, it becomes pointless to try other stuff altogether,
as you won't get any new experience from it.
Everyone's likes different aspects of games, though;
just gotta look for what you enjoy.

You mentally torment and abuse a girl to make her freeze to death your enemies, you make her kill her childhood friend, you incourange her dark thoughts, and scare the shit out of her in the light world in the hospital, by saying to her that it wasn't a dream, and she actually killed her friend and many others.
It's not a genocide route. Its more of an evil route. Genocide means that you kill a large group of people. While in deltarune, you don't kill anyone. (Except berdly but that's not genocide)

In Chapter 1, You've got to keep Susie's rudeness and crudeness higher than 100. Also you got to get max TP in susie vs lancer fight before susie's final attack. Also keep ralsei's kindness low by not using the acts that include him or is done by him. No sparing, no pacifing, no use of kindness and compationate action, Just Pure Dark Genocide.
Also for Susie before her fight against lancer, her rudeness and crudeness got to be as high as possible.

so basically while the means may be different, the end will always be the same, seems familiar, almost as if it in most games ever, we're playing through a story that's already been defined, no matter how you choose to play, the ending will be there, it's like you're playing Pokemon, no matter what Pokemon you choose at the start or which ones you put in your party when fighting gym battles it's gonna have the same ending.
This isn't undertale, don't expect it to be like undertale, sure the background characters are very similar, but they've lived different lives, undyne doesn't know who alphys is, catty and bratty hate each other, stuff like that. The only reason why the game having only one ending is such a shock for everyone is because everyone is comparing it to undertale. you can compare the 2 games gameplay and quality wise but don't expect Delta rune to be like undertale at all in it's story, if you do, *you'll be in for a bad time*
but in all seriousness, don't try so to compare the 2 games, at the end of the day I feel like it takes away from the feel of the game if you just try to make it something that it isn't.
Sorry, but If you're not meant to compare.... Why the f. They are related then? (It would not make sense to just do a game with no envolvment then? Showing new things and a new story?) And they are related because Sans knows you, as the player of both games with the same character in it.... dont get me wrong, i've got your point... "Your choices dont matter" isnt a bad idea, the game is great, but i dont think that would be just "it"... This can easily be used as a plot where in Pt.2 you cant change what is done or something like that. Or is just a simple well made demo. For me, comparing them makes both better.

This is a video about delta rune, and OP never distinguished between Chara and the mysterious voice in delta rune, so its implied they are one and the same.
Honestly, unless this becomes an important theme in the story, I hope that you can kill people in the final game, once all chapters are done.
After all, part of the magic of undertale is choosing whether you are going to kill the characters or deal with them peacefully. While playing Deltarune, I thought that by doing the pacifist or genocide run you basically were chosing between Ralsei's and Susie's point of view, and then the story would develop different.
I love to play pacifist in both undertale and Deltarune, I never wanted to do genocide run actually, but im not a big fun of forcing you to be a pacifist...
As I said, maybe the "your choices don't matter" thing becomes really important, it has potential for an interesting plot theme, like: some horrible thing happens and you couldn't did absolutly anything to avoid it, or stuff like that.

Doing the pacifist/genocide paths again would be redundant. Undertale already exists, there's no need to make it again. I like the idea of the sequel taking the same theme and looking at it entirely differently. The whole game is structured around having no choice, of playing a part you don't want to, being caged, chained, tied to the inevitable, and I think it's really interesting.

You can’t change the ending because it’s not the REAL ending only the ending of chapter 1, you might be able to change things in chapter 2

1. This isn't the finished game, this is the free part 1.
2. Genocide isnt impossible, it just means you wont save anyone and get a 0% act rate, which is possible and the new way of doing it since you cant cill anyone and get exp
You definitely can't get a 0% ACT rate, that's what the whole bit about K.Round was, he literally heals himself too often for you to win by FIGHTing so you have to ACT to knock off the crown. It could still be like... certain exceptions are made, like in Undertale you don't kill Monster Kid, you just don't spare him.
But yeah, I think we should keep our reservations about the consequences choices may or may not have down the road, it seems like the first chapter of any story couldn't have maaajor upsets because they still have to make it to the end of the game somehow. Who knows if Toby will stick to his word about only having one ending?
@@stickmic2 Most of the debates about whether or not there will be different endings are due to a post Toby made a couple days after Deltarune came out when he explicitly said there would be only one ending, i.e. one route. I personally think he's bullshitting but who knows.
the Dark world is where your choices does matter...and the only thing different is you can't kill anybody...but you can still be described as a bad person if you defeated the enemies...that triggers the ending where the King sleeps...while the pacifist ending if you killed nobody or susie killed nobody...then you will get the ending where the king was overthrown...
Genocide is impossible for me...because I can't see past the tears...

I think it's because of the beginning, where you created a... "vessel"? Kris (or whatever the entity was that you were talking to) is rejecting the soul you gave them- maybe they have their own soul, or maybe they just didn't want yours.
(This is basically just ridiculous amounts of extrapolation, by the way. None of what I said is confirmed and it's probably not true.)

That's actually an interesting point, Kris is actually an actual human, not just an existence for a vessel for the player like Frisk was.
Toby Fox said that he made Frisk's gender-neutral just so that we as the players could choose a gender to them, I guess he wanted to make us feel more connected to the game and its protagonist.
Kris is the opposite of that, since they actually have a background and has an actual personal life and is not just used as a vessel to the player, Kris may actually have a gender since Toby Fox wants us to be aware that Kris is a human, not just an existence to the player to connect to the world that the game is in.

I think Genocide is just “deactivated” for 1st chapter, and once Chara awakens, Genocide will be “activated” from 2nd chapter, because of Chara.

Why do people always think "UOh kRis gOt a kNiFe aNd rEd eYes tHat sHould mEan thEy aRe Chara!1!1!1!", it's not like Chara will just pop outta nowhere and just start doing Geno runs for no reasons at all or "activating" it.
People also tend to forget the fact that we are using Kris as a Vessel, removing all his freedom and controlling them, Kris is a normal human with their own personal life.
They also dislike being controlled since as shown in the ending, Kris removes us from them and when they show the knife they are looking directly at us, almost like they are teasing us like " You can't control me anymore" and smiles at us and, no, just because they did that does not mean they are Chara.
After all, Kris is not that sociable at all with the other monsters in the town, since when you start talking to them, they get rather confused with YOUR actions like saying that you're different today.
In the end, all I can say is that Kris is not Chara and neither will "awaken" them.
But well, this is just a theory!

Since this is only Chapter 1 and another universe from Undertale, maybe in this one Humans can do such a thing.
I think whats important here is that this game is geared towards those who already played Undertale, and Toby expects us to do both a pacifist, followed by a genocide ending due to the nature of the game.
While clearly this is an alternate universe, I think 'our' actions still happened before the Deltarune timeline, and as Chara specifies, we are not beyond consequences.
Therefore, it doesn't matter what we do - the end result will always be the same. We made our decision long ago already in Undertale, and those decisions carry over into Deltarune.
Toby said the state we left Undertale in, has no effect on this game though.

While we certainly don't know all the details, I personally find that a little disappointing. I was hoping this was some kind of altered timeline to the extreme, kind of like the FUN values in Undertale.

dont forget the fact that the game actually asks for permission to access files on your OS. what do you think this game is accessing? I bet it's the undertale save file, and it will determine delta runes further development depending what routes you played in undertale. after all its pretty difficult to completely reset your save file in undertale. even after a genocide reset there's still unique dialogue options about how you already killed certain characters before... the game rememberes...
No, Toby already said it's a different universe. But what you're saying is quite interesting. It could be something as normal as Toby making sure we enjoy the game more and don't have as many trouble playing it if we did with UT, or it could mean something deeper and more complicated that we might only experience in the next chapters.

Possibly. But in deltarune it seems that the players choices don’t matter. Maybe this is Chara’s way of forcing us to see how it was like to be Sans? To try to stop an ultimate evil, but know that you have no chance.

There’s a good reason for this mind - the game repeatedly tells you “your choices don’t matter”, because Susie is the one making choices. She first chooses to ignore the party, join it, leave it with Lancer, blow up your invention and then chooses not to kill the King and try acting, etc.
That’s because Susie is the player in this game, Kris is the dungeon master setting the scene and telling the story.

1. The creation you make is black and white, a simple vessel, forgotten immediately. The same way other Gaster followers in Undertale are.
2. If you use your cellphone (in Key Items) you get a message that you try to call home that is interrupted with Gaster's signature glitched out sound. It happens everywhere and every time.
3. After the return to the real world you can go south to reach a weird bunker with red doors and odd sounds. When recorded and sped up, it makes the exact same noise as the phoneline did, ie. Gaster
It might not be his will, but this world is seeped with his presence that is stronger than in Undertale
Maybe you can't go on a genocide run because deltarune takes place before undertale, and that's why there can't be different endings since they would lead to two different stories afterwards
