The 2023 Peugeot 308 is a development of the previous-generation car but with improvements to the platform and especially the interior technology. Under the bonnet is a familiar 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine making 96kW (128 hp), but there will also be a powerful 165kW (221 hp) plug-in hybrid model coming soon. And a wagon!
But what will the new 308 cost? That is the best question. We are expecting it to tick up quite a bit in price.
Rivals to the Peugeot 308 include the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3 and Cupra Leon … and maybe the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series too.

Interior is fabulous, better than a Mercedes in my opinion.
A Peugeot owner here, thanks to Nathan's review of the 2008GT. Design is subjective, but I think their designers have been doing a cracking job of delivering an attractive and distinctive for their range. In terms of the ownership experience, the car has been nearly faultless in my 9 months of ownership. Yes, their depreciation will continue to be poor, but I much rather take a monetary hit than go back to another boring VAG product.
Lastly, regarding the lack of horsepower, it is slow, but the engine is linear from take-off with little to no hesitation. I think it helps the full 230nm come in nice and early together with the lack of body mass makes it feel brisk in city driving.
I'm in the UK and I'm really pleased with my new Peugeot 308 GT petrol, it's a great car. I've had it almost a month and do I regret my decision YES. The reason why is that Peugeot are supplying the new 308 with missing equipment. Mine is missing...heated windscreen, wireless charging, 3D i-Cockpit, heated steering wheel and traction control deactivation. There should be a series of function buttons to the bottom right of the steering wheel. My car just has 5 blanking plates where these should be and this missing kit is not an isolated incident, search for - Peugeot Forum..Missing Specifications. It's my first and last Peugeot. I'm in touch with Peugeot UK but haven't got anywhere yet !!!
Now Megane has gone from our market I’m so pleased it’s here and loving the green paint ❤
Great review as always. Car Reviewers should nowadays go a step further in also commenting on car reliability/ brand customer service. This will be an added value information to people who seek more info than what can be easily available.
While they look to be a decent car - as most modern pugs are - depreciation would stop me from owning one.
Full points for green though. Love the colour
Agree. Loving looking car, however it will depreciate a lot and as it’s costing close to merc , Audi it puts me off
what a great looking car!
That is a great car! It would certainly be on my short list. The GT wagon would be the best option in my opinion. Not sure about the green colour on the car shown. Thanks again for an excellent review.
They're good cars. Had my T9 308 Allure Premium for a few years now, still love it. Shame about the pricing for this new gen..
I wish it had physical buttons for the climate control
It does
@@danielrussell446 I was talking about dials for every climate control, setting not little buttons down the bottom for some things, and then most of the other things are in the touchscreen
There's a middle arm rest for the back + cupholders in the SW version
Looks nice but engine output is disappointing :( I’d like a Hyundai/Kia style 150kw engine
Wait until the 165kw hybrid comes then.
As always an excellent review Thomas. Do the dash toggle switches operate the climate control? Touch screen only was a negative of the previous model. I'm surprised mechanicals of nearly 10 years ago are carried over, good as they are. 7 years ago in Aus you could buy the excellent base manual for 22K...a bargain. Aussies will not choose this new model over a 3, Civic or Corolla. Peugeot used to build some of the best cars in the world (i.e 404 and 504 and 205 GTi). Not anymore, sadly.
GT hatch starts from 43,990 plus paint and ORC while GT premium from 48,990 plus paint and ORC.
Wagon body is an extra 2k and the PHEV variant starts at 66,990.
Not bad but I’d need to test drive one if I like it enough
OK, interesting. Where’d these numbers come from?
@@chasingcars got the email from Peugeot few days ago. I should’ve mentioned that these are the estimates before the final pricing is release

Glad we picked up the last 2.0L diesel.
There has been a lot of problems with the 1.2 PureTech petrol in Europe due to premature timing belt failure. The timing belt is destroyed by too much gasoline in the engine oil. Also the 1.5 BlueHDI Diesel can have issues with the timing chain breaking and AdBlue tank related issues. The 1.6 petrol has also had its fair share of issues in the previous 308 generation.
I have a 2015 308 with the 1.6T petrol, have not had any issues at all, although I decided to change the timing chain tensioner at around 70,000km just as a precaution. Less than $100, might as well.
@@benp1559 That does sound extremely cheap. Did you do the work yourself? The 1.6 is a BMW engine that is also used in the Mini.
@@apn42 This is just the tensioner. It takes less than half an hour to install and the part is under $100 to purchase from the dealer. I know the engine well. Apparently most of its issues were sorted by the time the T9 308 was released, mechanic told me he hasn't seen many issues with them. Changing the tensioner and regularly topping up oil will help to extend the life of the timing chain, as it really should last the life of the car (~200,000km).
This is old information. The wet belt material has been changed on new pure tech engines which has solved the issue
Does it come with Autohold function?
Looks great! Lots of competittion at that price from the big German manufacturers though. If priced similarly it would be a hard sell over an A3 or 118i based purely on the badge alone I'd say.
It looks like it might be worth that price, but resale and brand recognition alone are going to to hurt sales if you can get one of the big 3 with similar specs for around the same price.
It’s in the same price bracket as an A1. I know this is just my opinion, but I think the 308 is A LOT nicer than an A1. Specially if you compare base versions for each one 🙂
I would honestly love one of these but my eyes water at the repair costs I'd no doubt incur over the lifetime of the vehicle. Maybe one day haha. That colour is just gorgeous.
Had 2 2008. No problems over 000s of miles. Zero. Driver surveys place P high for reliability, above many premium more common brands. Good cars; stylish, well built, economical, quick. Love mine.
Do they have showroom insydney?
one of the most beautiful affordable cars. It’s really gorgeous. How is Peugeot reliability in comparison with other brands such as Mazda or Honda?
The moustache is disturbing Tom 😜
Disturbingly appealing maybe
@@chasingcars Haha! 🤣
@@chasingcars let's say disturbingly disgusting
@Chasing cars : guys, what about the brand new Peugeot 408 ? Have Peugeot told you about ? Will they introduce it to the Australian market ?
I sold my Peugeot, fantastic car but things break and they are shit expensive to replace. Most parts that failed mind you were the BMW parts that they use. typical BMW crap.
Is it co developed engine with BMW you talking about?
Yeah, this isn’t the BMW/PSA Prince engine, this is a PSA specific motor.
No arm rest in the back? In Europe there is one.
Under 100kw, call "GT".
Decent car but I doubt we'll be getting it in South Africa.
You're showing us the tech in the dash but the camera doesn't switch to show what you're pointing at. 4/5
Wagon only comes in 92kW version. Booo! UK gets full range in both wagon and hatch.
Is that British racing green? 🤣
No. They put that on the Vauxhall's they make; British brand! Love my Peugeot in red.
It’s called olivine green
Any comment of mine here will be biased!! Owning 2 Peugeots!! I will say though we still seem to miss out on the best newest Peugeots these days, not happy we never got the new star child the new 208 Hatch. Will this new 308 Hatch fill its void here? I don't really know. I don't think so. I'm also not a fan of the new Peugeot Emblem. Changing something as fundamental to a car brand its badge, and in this case with Peugeot, being the oldest car manufacturer in the world, doesn't sound like a great move to me.
But, Peugeot have done it before, so does THAT make changing the badge a trend? Look on the web for an image of a 1930 Peugeot 201 and check the "shield" on the bonnet, then their new shield looks like a return to their roots to some degree. Am with you, though. I prefer Lion Rampant over this new shield.
what are the reasons people choose wagon over SUV style?
Better handling, less bulky, sometimes more fuel efficient.
The climate control screen was only showing one temperature display. Is this car only going to have single zone climate control?
Says "right side climate" underneath the temp. A UK review I watched mentioned on the lower screen, you can choose what displays on it.
@@SupremeMoFo Ah ok, thank you.
They’ve got to fix that woeful rear view camera quality.
At the rear end it all goes wrong with the lower bumper insert in black and those silly silver inserts… as for GT aka grand tourer but it’s anything but… as for all this premium and going upmarket hyperbole then 96 kw does not cut it… either way Peugeot lost it’s way in aussie land a long time ago and I don’t know how they get it back….
I would have to agree on the gutless comment. I would have bought one if it was a 4 cylinder, with 150kw
I'd say the 165kw hybrid will come here too
@@unclebanga5976 and its nearly 67k
Amazed they didn't fit the 114kw 1.2 turbo from the 2008GT Sport.
They have maybe it’s not available in Australian models
So the EV version next year will be peppier with 156hp? 😅
EV torque.
Mean looking but underpowered ,no thanks would need at least 200kw to even be considered
I think we are experiencing car category creep again, this isn't by historical standards a small car.
Looks great, love the green, its just so under powered :(
You lost me at 96kw, Flintstones cars would go quicker 😮😁
96kW in a turbo motor to move 1200kg is more than enough.
Plus, the Flinstones car was a convertible !
@@copaloadofthis Yes it was 😁😁😁👍
@@chasingcars not for anything enjoyable
It's too over-stylised for me. The DRLs, fake side vents, fake exhausts and that stand-in tail light bar are too much. I do like the green though. I'm with Tom on being happy to see green make a come back.
50k on the road for a 92kw engine. Peugeot Australia is on crack.

@@andrewmclean6555 Peugeot 308 !!!! Come on !
@@klausschelling8159 It's tough isn't it. It looks amazing on the inside, but I do love the way a VW Golf drives...well, Cupra.
@@andrewmclean6555 I genuinely believe the Peugeot is superior to the Cupra. By the way, I am Germany and here in Germany, I see more and more French cars. Particularly Peugeot who is now considered a "mid premium" car maker in continental Europe, and going full premium and I am sure they will achieve it. Check out their brand new 408... Looks like a Lamborghini Urus. Cupra belongs to VW Group but is not in the same class as Peugeot... Here, Cupra is like Skoda : second brands/lines in VW group. Appealing only to first buyers or people who don't want to spend too much.
All that money and no soft touch in the back...even the i30 is soft touch in the back

Shame it’s so gutless
No stinking hot GTi model anymore :(
And no manual 😭
The reality is more power than this is useless on Australia's speed camera obsessed roads. I feel sorry for all of those super car owners who can't use second gear without risking jail time.
@@brownhairydog6472 nah still plenty of places to have fun
Weak engine
No. These things shift. It is a great engine.
Still, find it amusing how many boys need that speed thing. It's so weary and clichéd. Buy an awful 2nd hand BMW M thing, grow a beard, drive with your hoodie up with some bangin beats and leave this stylish little number well alone.
The interior looks interesting, but I am finding it disgusting what Peugeot is doing with their exterior design throughtout their model family, especialy that ''fang light'', so pretentious and ugly.
I think they over-designed it, the Mazda 3 looks nicer
The Mazda 3 is incredibly boring now.
