I did NOT expect to get a reply lol. Thanks for taking my idea into consideration! Excision is one of the best when it comes to both creative set ideas and stage production, but most of the recordings of his shows are of the stage itself rather than his cdjs. You’d either have to find a video that does show them or analyze it from the audio if you were to do it.
I saw Skrillex play a UKF show years ago in London. When he got on stage, he clearly couldn't operate the CDJs, so 16Bit came on and helped him for about 30 mins. Glad to see he's been practicing since then!
I had listened Skrillex's set for lots of times and I love this DJ so much. Thank you for making this video, and I really love it.(Try my best typed in English)
Skrillex is one of the few producers I would wanna sit down with and ask a bunch of technical shit to. Not just music but, also branding and image stuff. Cuz, I have to admit. Some producers are technically skilled. Some are great at branding and promotion. This dude is good at both. And he learned all that shit way too fast. Aka, he won a Grammy for a dubstep album….like, bro. Fucking how? Cuz, it’s possible. He did it. It was even more unheard of than it is today. It could happen again. But, how in the actual fuck did he do it? Right now, dnb is gonna blow up. Every edm producer is saying this. It’s just a matter of when. Dubstep when skrillex did his thing was almost prideful in its modesty. It was like, skrillex was the Chad Muska of skateboarding but, for edm. He came out, and somehow became a rockstar. And everybody in the community hated him until they realized he was also one of the most skilled in the field. And, I dunno how either of them did it? Cuz, whereas chad lived an explicitly lavish lifestyle. Who knows what fucking car skrillex drives? I don’t. Who knows how much his fit costs? I don’t. I don’t know a think about the dude, other than he’s hyper as fuck and somehow made dubstep 5 years ahead of its time become relevant the moment he made it. It just doesn’t make any sense. But it worked. Whatever the fuck he did. And I gotta know. I’m tryna think back to how I got into dubstep. It was him. Why? I heard my buddy say “yo. This dude makes crazy shit out of memes.” That was it. And than randomly I was listening. Something about the pop culture references hit different. It was satirical in a way. Dubstep prior was super emotional. And deep. Skrillex made it accessible through memes dude. Like, is that the secret sauce. If something is too technical, just make it seem funny? Cuz I think it is. Looking at some of the more successfully dubstep producers now, most, if not all songs have a joke in them. Than, there’s skrillex’s image. A party animal with over the top energy and charisma. I mean. Maybe there’s a formula here. Take something really hard, technical and complex, make it seem like a joke, than present it like an animal. And people will have no choice but to notice. Than adapt into the mainstream. Boom. But that still seems to simple. There’s something more. And that is what I wanna know.
There's a LOT to unpack from Skrillex and his life Jackson. He was a musician first and foremost, and he just happened to go into production and DJing. But hey, if the guy is genuine, and lives simply, then it's all good!

Thought I would add my point of view. (DJ RENE) Been in the business for over 40 years and have gone through many changes using various pieces of the technology. Like an artist/performer its all about entertaining your audience. In some cases a singer you may stand center stage with a mic stand and not move, in others cases they dance across a 100ft stage with lights, effects and pyro. The technology used in both cases may differ as well as their delivery techniques but the intention is the same, to satisfy the paying customer. There are many sides to a pyramid but there all lead to the same tip. The lesson here is to learn where possible, improve where necessary with the single goal to incorporate aspects of the trade that will enable you to increase your personal earnings. Thanks Carlo for your efforts and sharing when possible.

I saw Skrillex live back in 2011 in germany where he played his dubstep tracks like "MY NAME IS SKRILLEX" and "SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES". it was insane!! =)
I know tons of people suggested Skrillex last week, but I’m gonna pretend you took my suggestion! 😅 I love most of his sets but that Boiler Room Shanghai set is amazing. Thanks DJ Carlo Atendido great breakdown!
it's always annoyed me when i hear people say "Oh!! Skrillex only presses play and plays pre-recorded sets!!!". Skrillex is one of those artists who you cannot disrespect, he's always performing realistically. Same for Fred again, deadmau5 and even underground DJs I'll tell you from experience, I started using CDJs for the first time and already got used to them in the span of 3 days. If Skrillex has been around for more than 14 years, then you know for certain he's a goddamn professional at his mixing skills in his sets.

@@briancardsfan Andy C hasn't won "Best DJ' in the dnb awards in two years with AMC winning them in two consecutive years. So it isn't arguable because Andy C didn't win the award
I see at 3:00 he's redlining hard. I know the phrase "If you ain't redlining, you ain't headlining," but I see a ton of people talk about how it's just distorting the track if it's hitting that hot. Any ideas?
I'd love to hear and see a video where you explain and demonstrate how to find a song when you are just second from the end of a song but havent found that right song. I guess how to make a back up plan for song selection when you blank out.
"Backspinning is a pretty excellent technique when you want to add more impact" Proceeds to show a series of some of the worst spinbacks ever executed 🤣

A question, why are you not at big festivals like Mysteryland? Would love to see you play live. Where do you DJ now? If in the area (Germany, Europe), I will definitely come to see you as you are an inspiration and love your style.
Please make a Video of analyzing a set of an Techno DJ like Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens or Boris Brejcha 🙌🏼 would be very nice. Thanks for your content 🔥
He is a subpar DJ - This is only my opinion. I am a turntablist with over 20 years of experience. The antics and booty shaking whilst standing over the turntables is kind of ridiculous. Idk how much people pay to go see him, but I would imagine that it is not cheap by any standard. I wince when big name DJ's can't even string together 3 songs without making it a spectacle. Alright, I'm done ranting. Hahaaa. Be well!
I heard once in an interview that when he was younger, Skrillex had a pony. So the transition at 3:27 makes complete sense. As a person who exercises horses for a job, I can tell you that you’ll really understand it when you feel that 4/4 beat through the muscles of A 1000 pound animal.

Thank you for that bud! Really appreciate comments like this because that's how I think as well. Move with the times, entertain your audience, and make sure everybody has a good time; which is the goal in the end. Take care bud!

Duck Sauce - NRG (Skrillex, Kill The Noise and Milo & Otis)
Thanks for that!
@@djcarlo took me a bit lol
I would love to see how Excision dj’s. Thanks!
Cool man!
Honestly his mixing skills aint that special, way better example would be Shiverz
Some progressive/melodic tech DJs mixing style. Camelphat, Innellea, Bodzin, Mind Against, Tale of Us, etc.
Pretty much yes!
Loving these DJ techniques breakdowns 🙌
Glad to hear it man! Hope you can share and like the video :)
I love how you say the next technique isn't so easy but after explaining what he does you say it's easy and effective lol
It should be easier after explaining it!
Dear Dejaay Carlo. I wanted you to know that thanks to you I am starting my first steps in this world of the DJ. I am still 15 years old but you're the first Dejaay who inspire me to make my first steps in mixing. I think that most of the things I know when mixing is because of you. Ily man
Awwwww that’s so nice to hear! This is awesome! I wish you all the best in your DJ career! And sure, you’ll be great too as you have a good start! Cheers!
Deejay*
I didn't realize DJing was such an interesting enterprise - thank you!
There's quite a lot that happens behind the scenes Michael! Believe me, I didn't know how things ran or how big it was when I first entered the scene.
You should do a similar vid but it’s James Hype his hands move so quickly
Sure sure! Thanks for the suggestion!
What an awesome video explaining one of my very favorite artists!!
For sure Therondevu! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Can you breakdown Virgil Ablohs dj techniques, he’s a great versatile DJ , also a breakdown of Solomun would be awesome he’s one of the greatest
I'll check that out! Thanks for the suggestion!
I saw Skrillex live back in 2011 in germany where he played his dubstep tracks like "MY NAME IS SKRILLEX" and "SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES". it was insane!! =)
Oh maaaan, classic "bro-step" era for him! 🤩
You should break down Andy C's mixing style next!
Good idea! Thanks for suggesting!
@@djcarlo I second Andy C!!! His double and triple drops tutorials would be nice :)
I third that and suggested Andy c in a previous video.
wonderful video! thank you! always loved skrilex but never thought of trying to dj, thank you for this insight and a amazingly put video!
For sure Quinn! At least you now have more insight into the man behind the mixing!
I know tons of people suggested Skrillex last week, but I’m gonna pretend you took my suggestion! 😅 I love most of his sets but that Boiler Room Shanghai set is amazing. Thanks DJ Carlo Atendido great breakdown!
Haha it's all thanks to you! Thanks for letting me know! Hope this video was worth the wait!
it's always annoyed me when i hear people say "Oh!! Skrillex only presses play and plays pre-recorded sets!!!". Skrillex is one of those artists who you cannot disrespect, he's always performing realistically. Same for Fred again, deadmau5 and even underground DJs
I'll tell you from experience, I started using CDJs for the first time and already got used to them in the span of 3 days. If Skrillex has been around for more than 14 years, then you know for certain he's a goddamn professional at his mixing skills in his sets.
Absolutely! He's one of the ones who were able to advance his mixing AND studio skills
@@djcarlo on point!
I love james hype the way she performed so much hyper
True!
Hey! Awesome vid. Can you break down Madeons DJ techniques?
Have a look at at AMC 6 deck mix, he’s been killing the drum and bass scene for years and dethroned Andy C as best DJ in the dnb awards for two years running
Woah! Sounds like an interesting guy!
This ^^
"dethroned"?!? That's obviously very arguable.
Any ideas?
It really does distort, especially with certain speaker ranges
@@djcarlo interesting, thanks for the reply! Do you know why headliners do that then? Is distortion desirable to create a seemingly louder track?
I'd love to hear and see a video where you explain and demonstrate how to find a song when you are just second from the end of a song but havent found that right song. I guess how to make a back up plan for song selection when you blank out.
Great idea! Thanks for the suggestion!
What's the music for the drop at 1:52 exactly, I know I liked that song but of course can't remember the name.
That's Knife Party's Internet Friends! Massive banger at the start of the 2010s!
"Backspinning is a pretty excellent technique when you want to add more impact"
Proceeds to show a series of some of the worst spinbacks ever executed 🤣
Lols, admittedly not the smoothest backspins you'll hear, but I still stand by saying that backspins add impact! Hahaha
@@djcarlo Na I'm only messing man. It's true, they definitely do when done well. I usually only ever do them as an impromptu thing when a transitioning out if something is going to drop the energy level too noticeably if done smoothly.
@@djcarlo Or when I've screwed up 🤣
But it did impact you lmao
Backspin AKA the ejector seat - used when you’ve totally fucked up your transition
Lols, this actually made me laugh. I've used that a few times for that exact purpose.
Skrillex is my favorite this made my day... THANK YOU SO MUCH!
YOU DA BEST!!! It's helpful knowing any of us can do this!
Thanks buddy! Hope you learned a lot from this video!
Ayy I love him too, however I don't know much about DJing but I love the energy at his shows
@@trystanfresh Right!!!
"A backspin gives the mix more impact"
Reggae Dancehall selector : so anyway I started blasting
It does! But I'd say not for reggae haha
If I never hear a backspin again it will be too soon
I can't stand MCs calling out "who wants a rewind?". I once stopped a set and told the bloke nobody effing wants that and to tone it done.
@@GriotDNB yeah it worked in the 90s its not really worked since.
Thank you for this video ❤
You're very welcome! Hope you learned something new from it!
It will be cool to do COONE next
Btw this series is really
Thanks dude! Hopefully we can keep this going with.all.the views;
@@djcarlo yeah mate
Ive been waiting this break down for so long thanks dj carlo 🙌🙌 wooot wootttt!!!
Yaaaayy! Glad you’re enjoying this one!
Would love to see this done for DJ Mall Grab
I heard he's pretty skilled!
Hey Carlo, really great stuff that you do, so much respect and appreciation, keep it up please. Would be great if you could drop one of these on Sven Väth 🙂
Let me do some extra research on Sven, and I'll see if I can come up with anything!
@@djcarlo Thanks Carlo, I think Sven is a little more ´low key´ than the young guns but I like the way he lets the music take centre stage and not the DJ, perhaps a bit oldskool but I like this. I also of course love Hardwell etc. he really gets the crowd going. The style I dislike (hate) is Timmy Trumpet who just not fit the culture of some chilled festivals. A question, why are you not at big festivals like Mysteryland? Would love to see you play live. Where do you DJ now? If in the area (Germany, Europe), I will definitely come to see you as you are an inspiration and love your style.
Carlos, James hype is by for on of the most creative djs, review some of his top tricks please, great chanel love the vids
Let's see what I can do! Thanks for the suggestion!
Seconded!
What's the song at 1:52 ? Haven't heard it in a while and I can't remember to save my life.

Thanks man! Hope the world sees more of my stuff too! This takes so much work!
Please make a Video of analyzing a set of an Techno DJ like Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens or Boris Brejcha 🙌🏼 would be very nice. Thanks for your content 🔥
Oh those are amazing DJs! Let's see!
CARLO what is the set where he is in a camo jacket? awesome mix from clips I’ve seen
I honestly can't remember where I pulled that clip from. Let me try to double check my archives!

Thank you for this champ! Skrillex is a hell of a legend! MAKJ next please champ! #playwithmusic
Thanks man! Sure I'll consider it! He's super good!
I'd love to do the backspon, but when you do it on my deck, it breaks!
🔥 awesome! would like to see you break down James Hype, Armin van Buuren and Don Diablo’s mixes next!
Those are all good suggestions! I'll see what I can do!☺️
Great one again!!!!
Oh yes! More to come for sure! Thanks for the support!
Nice, keep it up, could you do James hype next
We shall see! His style is so fast~
Yeah, but that is why I love these videos of yours, you break them down so well

Thanks dj carlo i wait for this for so long
Hope it was worth the wait! More breakdowns to come!
Welcome bro 🙌🙌🙌
He is a subpar DJ - This is only my opinion. I am a turntablist with over 20 years of experience. The antics and booty shaking whilst standing over the turntables is kind of ridiculous. Idk how much people pay to go see him, but I would imagine that it is not cheap by any standard. I wince when big name DJ's can't even string together 3 songs without making it a spectacle. Alright, I'm done ranting. Hahaaa. Be well!
Hahahaha, point taken Ryan! Though Skrillex probably puts on a spectacle due to his time in a band. The showmanship can't leave haha
@@djcarlo Indeed it is. Maybe I'm being overly critical. Stage presence is an important factor. It's just never been something that I focused on.
Skrillex at 2015 ultra… that was an experience
It was a very good year for a lot of them! Ultra 2015 was pretty legendary from what I've heard!
Damn 1st time seeing skrilex djing he redlines like crazy lol
😂😂😂😂😂
Thank God for the sound guy who fixes everything up!
@@djcarlo if u aint redlining u aint headlining 😂😂😂
Your sound ends up compressed to fuck on the system nailed in the red. Really bad practice.
I heard once in an interview that when he was younger, Skrillex had a pony. So the transition at 3:27 makes complete sense. As a person who exercises horses for a job, I can tell you that you’ll really understand it when you feel that 4/4 beat through the muscles of A 1000 pound animal.
I had no idea he had a pony! Also, dude, that sounds like an awesome job!
@@djcarlo oh, it is. I volunteer for a place called velvet knows his horse ministry, and having such powerful animals around you is incredible. I love that it’s my job to take care of them. Feeding them, brushing them, walking them, is amazing. There’s nothing else like it on earth.
"hype ass fader"
