    huge point: Make sure that your players are set for ALL alterations or homebrew points in your system/setting that have the ability to effect their character BEFORE game begins.
    Cant tell you how many times someone has said something like, "It's a 3.5 Forgotten Realms game", but then they've made huge changes in how feats, Attacks of Opportunity, sneak attacks, and even classes work, while also changes huge tracts of history culture and such of the Realms at the same time.

    Great stuff! Setting to me is at the sametime very important and at the sametime not so important. It gives a context and sometimes defines the scope, but lately I find that tone is really what invokes the feelings that I'm aiming for. Kind of how sherlock holms works well in a 19 century setting as well as in a modern setting.

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM
      @HowtobeaGreatGM  8 лет назад

      +Timothy Myers Yes. I agree with you totally. You get ahead of me :) Tone is then next weeks episode. And it is a tricky beasty as that differs from party to party, and from player to player as to what is effective and what is not. But you are quiet right.

    I find it funny that those were all things that I already always tried to keep in mind when starting a new campaign. But those are very important points nevertheless.

    I have to agree with your first point of "What do you expect?" I am really looking forward to the rest of your series about setting. I think the "what do you expect" is so important. I always tell people that you need a world to fit your campaign. Example, If you want political then you need to be sure to have multiple factions with opposition ideologies and goals. If you want swashbuckling then you need to a setting that can appropriately host ridiculous rip-roaring adventures. Things like this are so important and often looked over. I very much like your series and I look forward to hearing more of what you have to say!

    Guy:
    First comment after watching a dozen or so vids. First off, congrats on a thoroughly enjoyable series. I find your style very engaging, easy to listen to (more on that in a bit) and most of all informative without becoming boring or overbearing.
    I only have one recommendation and my personal opinion is that you and your crew need this to take the production to the next level.
    The series cries out for a more permanent microphone setup with a good quality mic and recording setup. Thus far, the fact that you are very engaging makes up for the distraction of audio snicks and pops, etc. from clip mics on clothes, but... it could be SO much better with clean audio Guy! Then you and the segments will really shine, because it will make it very easy for the audience to follow without losing focus.
    A boom mic would be best, but I get the feeling you may not have a setup that would allow for one. A good quality desk stand microphone is a great second choice, although not as "comfortable" for some folks. I say this as you are rather demonstrative (in a good way!), so getting the mic away from you is all to the good.
    Thanks for listening and a big case of kudos to you and the crew for and excellent series!
    Best of luck and I hope to "hear" a big difference in the near future. ;p
    Paul

      +Paul West Paul - many thanks for this very warm opening comment. I lament and cry when I see these comments. The crew is myself, me, and I - and sometimes my social media partner helps check the focus on the camera... the sad truth is I simply do not have the resources to buy a proper wireless lapel. I actually work in Television, and so know what good audio should sound like - and that was why I stopped production after the first two episodes I made. Friends insisted that I carry on regardless. I've been asking around the local TV crews for old second hand lapels - but in this country - there is no such thing as unused tech. I'm just quietly saving as hard and fast (which is difficult) as I can, but our exchange rate is killing me... 15 to 1...that's 15 of my Rands to 1 US Dollar. So purchasing gear is just not something I can merrily do. If I had a lapel or a countryman (lapel that sits on the cheek rather the shirt) then what a pleasure. Anyway - I'm painfully aware of the poor audio quality and I really do lament not being able to improve it yet. I've been converting my cottage into a studio (not soundproof) but with fixed lighting and so on so steps are being taken... just slow ones. Again thank you for the feedback, I really do appreciate it.

      Ah, that is unfortunate Guy, sorry for putting you on the spot. However, it does reflect well on you that I naturally thought you had some kind of small crew. Keep that chin up and who knows?... do you have a Paypal support fund attached to the endeavor that people could maybe donate money to based on them liking the content? I for one would consider such a way of assisting in you reaching your goals and improving the technical quality.
      Anyway, I don't want to appear an absolute American 'busybody', so I will leave it at that. Thanks for answering.

      Hey Paul, it's all good! I'm thinking of launching a Patreon account but don't want to appear... greedy or commercial. But maybe it's time to swallow the blue pill? And there is no such thing as a busybody. Merely people who care! Which is awesome!

      Well, I will say this; at least in the US it would not be considered greedy or commercial when considering your circumstances. I say go for it- you might just be surprised how many people out there would support you in continuing and improving the concept. Cheers!

    Great stuff as always. I'm not sure how I missed this one, but it is incredibly well done like all the others.
    I just watched the part where you said "students at a magic school, taught by..." not very original. Then I thought about 21 Jump Street. I think I may have a few weird 1-off stories brewing now.
    Thanks as always for your diligent work.

    Great video. I am actually gearing up to work with a new group, and this was a lot of help to get a solid setting going. When you brought up to think about the kind of system to use and my group is going to be using the Fate system. It had me wondering, have you ever used Fate before? If so, do you have any thoughts or suggestions about it?

      +May Tsuki I played Fate light version at a Con once. I admit it was a crazy session but I wasn't impressed enough to run off and learn it. One of my players is madly in love with it, so I guess I'll have to check it out. What do you like it?

      +How to be a Great Game Master Well for me, the Core book and the Atomic Robo versions both allow for some very nice storytelling that is enhanced by the system. It's not super numbers-heavy like some other systems and rewards creative thinking through Aspects, but still has enough numbers and rolling to get the job done. Another big thing, for me at least, was that the Core book can be downloaded for free in pdf form. As a poor college student, you can imagine how nice this was.

    I really enjoyed this video, and it made me think about the setting I'm creating for my DnD 5e campaign. It takes place in an original kingdom, but is surrounded by some of the player's favorite fantasy settings, such as Middle Earth, and Tamreil. That way the land it takes place is original, but I can occasionally throw in some elements the players may recognize. Hopefully it works out. If you see this, I was wondering what your thoughts would be of this kind of mash-up campaign.

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM
      @HowtobeaGreatGM  7 лет назад +2

      Honestly - they can be a lot of fun, if things that rock up are characters or monsters, maybe village names, but if the players are fighting Skeletor and then get told - head to Mordor to help Mordenkeinen I'd be a little pulled from my game by the meta - unless that is what you are going for!

    • @Jake007123

      Players love references but they love even more original plots (or plots that they think are original, at least). So yeah, it's cool to find out there is a place like Skyrim or a town called Whiterun filled with Nordics, but I wouldn't do any "dragonborn" or, if you do, make a twist on their expectation and let them think he is a hero, only to reveal later on that he is a power-hungry villain.

    I really would like you to consider our (Polish) new setting which is called "EpicWorld". This is a Fatasy marged with si-fi cyberpunk style world. In few words all people are living on the space stations orbiting what is left of earth. Some time ago corporations build a dome that allow everyone live a life of a fantastic creatures. In addition under the dome are native "people" who are just some AI hosts (like in westworld). And this all is amazing setting becouse not all the earth is under this one dome, there are many dome that are "in-build", which creates many oportunietes to create your own world.
    I realy would like you to read about this, but I don't think this will ever be transalted to English.

    A lot of what your videos have done for me has inspired me to create really good story in my campaign. I'm working with a larger group of players and the second we get into combat, keeping track of all of the HP between the PC's and the NPC's and checking who's Reflex Def. is higher or what attack options this NPC has, all of that just gets really jumbled. Since I work off my computer a lot just to have some Excel sheets, I've been able to keep all the information fairly organized, but its still seems a little bit jumbled up. Do you have any tips for how to better manage combat sessions or just general organization tips to keep the encounters captivating?

      And do you plan on a Star Wars Video? I just wanted to see your take on the Star Wars Saga Edition d20 version. I'm playing with the revised core rulebook and the other 14 books as well.

      I'll add it to the list - though it may fall under how to manage big groups which is going to be coming out fairly soon. So what out for that. thanks for the feedback on the channel, glad it's helping!
      As for Star Wars as soon as I have a gap in questions I'll gladly do a Star Wars video. Saga was a cool version of the game :)

      I'm involved in a little something hopefully for the 3rd edition of MnM. Good grief did I have to reread, reread, ask, google, beg, reread and eventually realize how it worked. So yes a touch system to get into but having said that it does look to be a fairly robust system for dealing with beings with super-powers etc.

    I don't really agree on one point: the GM shouldn't be original. I'd day, borrow cool ideas all the time, go for the awesome!

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM
      @HowtobeaGreatGM  8 лет назад +2

      +Flavio Marcato It may have been the phrasing I used - but my meaning was use what is in existence, draw from what is around us - borrow cool ideas - but then give them a twist of your own. Take an idea from one genre and use it in another for example. But you are right - always go for the awesome!

  • @eulen-mensch

    Why are you playing DnD/Pathfinder when there are other Systems that support character development (e.g. Burning Wheel, Torchbearer) or being movers and shakers within the setting (e.g. Reign)? DnD to me is still a game about fighting things and dungeoncrawling at its core and doesn't supply the best foundation for what you are talking about most of the time.

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM
      @HowtobeaGreatGM  8 лет назад

      +dot TOO So to honestly answer your question I have only GM'd a handful of systems. Until the dawn of internet delivery in around 2004/5 in this country we had exactly 1 bookshop that sold roleplaying material. 1. So I was exposed to DnD very young, and most players in South Africa know it as a stable entry point into RPG's. There are many other systems that are better at role-playing I agree. Heck I even reviewed one in our systems review that has more scope for story. So I guess it's just old habits die hard? And now that we're into episode 3 of our show Bacon RPG we are kinda locked into it. But don't worry - there are many many more things coming and many more systems are going to be exposed!

    • @eulen-mensch
      @eulen-mensch 8 лет назад

      +How to be a Great Game Master yes I totally know what you're talking about. I only have one shop where I live as well although I buy most of my stuff online since I try to get systems in their original language rather than a German translation.
      Also dnd is more accessible for potential players and also caters to power gamers as well as roleplaying focused players,which I think is a good thing.
      While I personally prefer other systems, it is the right system for my current group of friends.
      I am only getting into RPGs though and also didn't really experience time without Internet nearly as long as with it, so I guess my experience has been quite privileged so far.

    • @HowtobeaGreatGM

      Don't get me started on the dawn of internet shopping in this country and how Amazon boycotted the whole nation because our postal system was so corrupt nothing goet delivered! Even last year I had a package take just over a year to arrive! But anyway, I'm glad you see the value in using different systems! Thank for your feedback!
