GRENFELL INQUIRY: Builder “Quids In” after swapping cladding to cheaper but more flammable type

- Grenfell builder - Rydon - had a close relationship with Kensington and Chelsea before winning a £9 million contract. They planned a “celebratory” meal days before they were officially awarded project. Inquiry into the fire that killed 72 people, heard how Rydon were “quids in” by switching to a cheaper but more flammable type of cladding. Director Stephen Blake never told council of savings it made by switching to the more dangerous type of cladding, after a miscalculation in Rydon’s initial budget.
Blake finished his evidence by saying he was “haunted" by the project.
