    This was a great tuning video, most people don’t really know how to tune correctly and then put the information out in tutorials showing people to do it the wrong way.

    I recently purchased about 10 nitros for dirt cheap and I have minimal experience and you have helped me get started. You are very specific and you show everything you do on camera! Thank you a lot!

    Thank you sir. I just purchased my first nitro and have been tinkerin around with it, watching videos and reading.
    The way you explained it and showed us first hand was very easy to make sense of and gave me a better understanding of how the tuning process works and what to look and listen for.

    I agree with Craftycracker. I am 61 years old, a hs teacher, and have 15 years in the RC field. Average Joe Nitro....you have knocked the ball out of the park with your video. It is the best I have EVER seen on youtube...on how to tune nitro engines. :0) I pass the info onto my students here in Arkansas...where we love RC racing vehicles.

    I have an old T-Maxx 2.5 that hasn't been started in for ever. Last time I tried, I couldn't get it running, and that was quite a few years ago. Thankfully, I was smart enough to at least spray some WD-40 in it that day when I gave up.
    My son is 13 now, and interested in it, so I figured time to get it up and running again, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember the process for tuning it. Thanks for your video. You presented all the right information, clearly, and gave a great demonstration not only of what to do, but of the way the engine should respond when you are making the right adjustments.
    After watching this video, I am quite confident that I will be able to tune the engine properly again. Thank you!

    Props man, this is one of the best post break-in tuning vids I've seen. It seems like nobody actually know how they are tuning. They say they will show you how, then turn a few screws and presto it's tuned and you sit there scratching your head thinking, "what did I miss?"

    I have the Kyosho FO-XX with the same engine, and the break-in process was so incredibly painful. At times it just would not start at all. I could have sworn I was doing something wrong but I was just following the instructions. Eventually I got it broken in and lost all motivation to work on it more. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks for the video!
    The KE25 does sound gnarly though.

    This is the best! No nonsense video there is on youtube and trust me i have looked, it's a tad old, but it's still the best straight forward info out there, you also get to see him run the car and not just talk about what to do.
    thank you for your video it's great!

      I agree this is a nice video you should have looked harder (like he did) because these guys below were publishing plenty of tuning videos years ago. As detailed and/or as succinct as you want- go look around they have them. In fact they were probably the first to do as you said “run the car” which is the only way to do a tuning video IMO. Their channel is not that big, however but they definitely aeee the first to show out (and challenge others to as well). IMHO.

    Great tutorial! I just bought the new Inferno ST 3.0 RTR with the same engine. I love the truck. Added a little bit of Losi 35w to the big bore shocks and smooth as silk with lots of travel. The engine I have is a little tricky to start when cold but after about 1/2 tank of fuel, hold on. Please Be Careful!! with cheap batteries (especially for the car) set the fail safe, I had my car run away on me twice thank god no big crash.

  • @Hanibul_Lecktor
    @Hanibul_Lecktor 8 лет назад +2

    Factory settings are for break-in reference only. Once you've gone thru 5 tanks of fuel, then you proceed to tune. Then again after you've gone through about 1/2 a gallon. The car will suddenly run rich, needing tuned once again. I say this only because you mentioned several times the factory settings your car wouldn't run. Glow plug, nitro % and ambient temperature have a huge role in tuning. Great video, remember to always get your engine to maximum operating temperature before making any adjustments. 1hr increments high speed 1/2hr increments on low speed. Return your piston to bottom of it's stroke when not running, your ABC sleeve and aluminum piston will last 100 times longer. Cody King has a good video with your pinch test tuning tip.

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад +1

      +Michael Drum Yeah, I say that because every nitro engine I have ever owned besides this one will at least engage the clutch at factory settings. I expect a factory needle setting to be at least proper enough to begin tuning from but this thing is much different! The Novarossi engine I just got is the same as every other engine I have had..the factory needle settings will run... But run rich... This one will barely even start at their factory settings.... And yes you are correct environmental factors play a huge role in these small sensitive engines.

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад +1

      +Michael Drum After making this video I figured people were going to misinterpret what I meant by referencing factory settings. I am not the best at articulating things lol. Thanks for the input!

    • @Hanibul_Lecktor
      @Hanibul_Lecktor 8 лет назад +1

      Average Joe Nitro I'm watching the novarossi video now. On the novarossi, once running 1.5hr lean on the low speed and bump the idle up. It's doable from factory, running 25% nitro 11% oil with a medium plug. I'm only responding because the idle isn't laying down instantly on this video....Just some constructive criticism man...Good video, not taking anything away from that. Better then 90% of the pro's videos....

    • @Hanibul_Lecktor
      @Hanibul_Lecktor 8 лет назад

      Average Joe Nitro you did a great job, only thing id mention is this would be waaaaay after breakin period...Props to doing what you do to help people. Like I said, better then 90% of the pro's supposedly helping people getting into this hobby/sport/money pit.

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад +2

      Michael Drum Yeah, I have responded to others about that very thing about the idle. I usually take more time to lean out the LSN a bit more to get the idle to lay down instantly but the video was already so long that I really couldn't go into a super fine tuning deal. My werks clutch videos show a much better tuned engine. I in no way am saying that this engine is tuned to its best by any means. Just trying to show a simple way to get a good baseline tune. I appreciate the compliment! I understand what you are saying.

    Oh, and I've been holding out to do this vid because I wanted to show that same engine in it (I never want folks to think it's the quality of the engines). Those just rip in a special way, but any nitro engine can rip. I had one of those .25's actually, but traded it for something too good to pass up.
    So...tired of waiting, temps are cooling (which is good for us here) so going to pull the chord on this bad boy vid: I'm probably going to show three engines:
    OS25XZ (~2 gallons, ready to drop)
    Novarossi Roma .25 (NIB)
    Alpha Lutz Worlds Edition: (~4 gallons on it. Really starting to rip, BUT probably needs some maintenance).
    I think showing how I approach these three conditions (as it's different) would help some folks. When I get to hear you employ my technique on the .25 then it's beautiful because I get to hear it as I would run it. I'll def be getting one. Has it served you well?

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад

      +Nitro RCNerds Yeah it's been a great RTR engine! Best engine I've had on a RTR hands down! It's got 9 gallons on it and it's starting to get tired now.

    Well, let me start off by saying, great video and detailed explanation, it is a big help for all of us that are trying to get into Nitro. I have been into the R/C Hobby & World since 1986, I have always bought electric R/C Cars, Buggies, and Trucks. I have had issues with tuning and getting the necessary settings right when I would buy Nitro R/C's........I really want to get into the Nitro scene. I have been looking at, and researching a few nitro trucks for about a year now........the 1/8 Kyosho Inferno NEO ST Race Spec RTR and the 1/8 Kyosho Mad Force Kruiser 2.0 MT RTR. I have been a Towerhobbies customer for at least 17 years now, its the only place to buy anything R/C in my opinion.......they cant be beatin in price, etc! I mean where else could you go locally or online that offers 3 Easy Pay Payments on R/C Vehicles, etc!. :))

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад

      +triipiix187 I would check your fuel system. It's usually an air leak in either the fuel line, where they connect to the tank / carb, a hole in the line, or the fuel tank lid isn't sealing off completely. You can always prime it by taking the fuel line off where it connects to your pipe and blow in the fuel line and watch for it to enter your carb. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes!

    I have a few of these engines on the way. I'm looking forward to checking it out. Regariding stock settings....remember to pull the carb slide all the way out when you screw the LSN to all the way in.
    Also, factory settings are typically meant to be rich. it's used for break-in a re-tune. I don't think it's meant for optimal or "recommended" purposes' Some real quick tips:
    I look forward to putting my vid together as it will be a completely new way to tune (it's very different than what you are doing here.) No temps, no pinch test, we raise the idle while tuning the HSN, etc etc. Not saying any of that is harmful, just not what I execute. In my mind tune is a state, i/e/ there are no variances of it. The good news is this engine is not tuned.
    I CAN'T to see you truly tune i though ;'-)

      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад

      +Nitro RCNerds Yeah, these carbs are a bit different on the LSN. They are on the opposite side of the slide than the other engines I've had. I haven't had this one broken down yet but I noticed that in the exploded view it is actually compensated with a spring on the other side of the carb. You should check out my video on the Werks clutch I just slapped on this Truggy. It's (imo at least) tuned about as good as it's going to get. Let me know when you see that video if you think better power can be achieved or not. With regards to stock settings, I expect a stock setting to run well enough to start dialing a tune in from there. I have never had a manual tell me a stock (break in) setting that will barely even run lol. Looking forward to seeing you what you have put together! See you around!

    • @NitroRCNerds
      @NitroRCNerds 8 лет назад

      For sure, I'll check out the vid with that Werks clutch.....big fan of Werks, I have quite a few of thier products (engines, pipes, speed clutch, etc.) We'll have to agree to disagree on what a stock setting represents. I can only speak to the brand/makes I own, (Novaroissi, HPI, Werks, O.S,, Alpha, Losi, Hobao,, Orion, and REDS). I feel like I'm mssing a few, but my pernt is on 100% of those engines "stock" is what comes out of the box. It's intended to be nothing more than a safe way to start the engine and begin the tuning process. On many of them, you have to tweak a bit (lean out to keep it running) but stock is not intended to be a tuned engine (at least for those makes). In fact, most don't even have a "stock setting". Flush/flush is where you set it to retune. Thus when I 're-tune' the engine I put it back to stock. Of course, can't speak for Kyosho, unsure of what they consider, stock....BUT I would question how they can recommend a 'needle setting that guarantees anything other than the ability to start it. Okay, this is a loooooong -winded way of stating to me, stock is a myth. It doesn't exist.
      But for sure will check out the Werks clutch, and will no doubt put it down concerning the approach I take to tuning. Just keep an open mind and willing to do some things completely different than what you've always been told. try it out and then see whatrs up. ;-)

      +Nitro RCNerds Yeah, I see what you are saying. I am basically meaning the way the manuals for the engines I have owned usually say that the engine is set at "factory break in settings" out of the box and shouldn't be touched unless having trouble keeping it running. This engine when set at those "factory settings" won't even hardly engage the clutch lol! Anyways I just thought it was rather odd that it ran that sluggish even set to a "factory break in setting" considering that every other engine I have ever owned would at least run at a very rich state where as this one is barely able to get started at those "factory" settings. Thanks for the input man! I thoroughly enjoy talking RC with you! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you put together on tuning! Have a good one!

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад

      Thanks Dustin! Every temp gun I have ever used gives a false reading. If you are concerned on the engine overheating then I would just recommend the "spit test" or sprinkle water on the top of the cooling head. It needs to sit there for a few seconds before evaporating. If you spit or sprinkle water on the top and it immediately boils off then you are too hot and need to richen the engine immediately. Most of the time if you have the engine tuned to where it sounds good and not all high pitched (lean) sounding with that thin trail of blue smoke you should be OK. A lot of times these temp guns will tell you that you are running way hotter than you actually are. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    You might have covered this, but if you listen at 20:14 where you state the idle is settling down, I;'m not sure what the goal was...I still owe you my video, but I can tell you I learned to tune by reading the idle (iit actually tells me everything about the tune). I'm pretty sure the LSN was quite rich here because the idle two-staged. Either that, or your HSN was lean and the ballistic RPMs were carrying, making it sound like a 2-stage (I really can't tell from the one or two examples)....but I can tell you what I would suggest starting at 20:14 is lean the LSN. Do some hard passes until the idle does not settle down for at least 10 seconds...then close that idle gap to about ~.05 mm. Often when I tune, the engine sounds like crap overall, until the final 1-2 steps then it all comes together like magic. I'm also looking for someone to test out my tuning guide (which I'm selling) but those who help prove it out I'm giving it away to. Let me know if you are interested.
    Please keep posting running/tuning vids! We need more examples from people.

    • @averagejoenitro2730
      @averagejoenitro2730  8 лет назад

      +Nitro RCNerds Yeah, I'm fairly sure that it was a fat LSN because I usually tune it to where the idle stalls out on the pinch test a bit sooner but was needing to end the video because of length concerns. It takes me forever to upload long videos. Lately I will set my LSN and will continue to lean it out along with a preset carb gap of . 5mm until the two stage idle goes away. I've also tried the method where you run a WOT pass and stop the kit abruptly and let it sit for a good 5 seconds or so and then stab the throttle and look for smoke signs to whether it's lean or rich. As I've stated before I would be interested in the guide you are putting together. I plan on getting a buggy for my next RC (looking at the Tekno buggy) I am planning on going with either a Novarossi Paloma or an Alpha Engine. It would be cool to try the guide out that you have when I get the new buggy. Will more than likely be a couple of months or so before that happens though. What .21 class engine would you recommend?

    • @MatsEvensen
      @MatsEvensen 8 лет назад

      i will recommend the Novarossi Virtus, Novarossi Bonito 7xlbs, then you have the Reds engine.RB's. I am shooked over how brutal the Virtus is. It's the meanest buggy engine i have tried and own and it will also kick ass in a truggy. If you want a brutal fast and strong engine from low, mid. to a Incredible top end With a 9886pipe and a 41019 or a 41001 manifold, maybe the last one 41001 would be better so you have a overall strong and fast engine. I use the 41019 manifold cause mine is modifyed and hits 60 mph in a couple of Seconds if you gear it up from Stock and 2 T more on the clutchclock.

    Thanks for this video, very helpful. I’m working on refurbing a Traxxas Revo 3.3 that I recently purchased and am having a tough time with the engine tune. My problem is the idle. The idle screw is currently all the way in but still the idle is too low. It will occasionally die unless I give it some throttle. I do understand that LSN setting affects the idle. Does this mean I’m way too rich on my low speed? Difficulty is that I’ve tried leaning the LSN but have not had good results. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
