- I'm not a Questioned Document Examiner, but I to know a bit about it as a Handwriting Nerd so here's my 3 basics for how to identify a forged signature. + bonus challenge at the end to put your skills to the test.

When I was younger my signatures on important documents looked forged because I got nervous and wanted to make my signature look as much as my usual signatures as possible so no one could question my signature on the current document. However, I would write it really slowly and sometimes wobbly and yeah ... great how you sometimes get the opposite result of what you were going for xD

I work at a bank so I look at a LOT of signatures and try to determine forgeries. I’m proud I got them all right! One of the things I look for in a signature is the order that a letter is written. For example, “b.” Do they normally make a line then a circle? Or a circle and a line? Continuously move from top line to looped circle bottom? Or from the circle to the line?
I also studied in Japanese for several years where the order and direction of strokes makes a big difference, which I think definitely helps in determining a forged signature. Sometimes my 2s are flat bottomed and sometimes they have a loop, but in all cases I write top to bottom and if the 2 is written in a different order, it’s a very clear indicator of being written with a different hand-even though I have a lot of variation in general!

@@LeahEckardt we literally caught someone with forged checks and stalled long enough for them to get arrested yesterday. They had been hitting a bunch of banks in the area with checks stolen from mailboxes, trying to cash them. The strange, forged-looking signature tipped off the teller who called the number of the person on the check who said, “What!! I definitely didn’t write that!!”
I used to work at a bank too. Maybe that’s why I was able to spot them all.
My mom learned how to identify fakes as part of her job, which has made her a good forger. It's a great party trick but it worries people!

I saw a video a pen attached to a printer writing an essay made in Chat GPT. If an AI were able to get enough samples of your handwriting in order to copy the way your write, could it get to the point where a signature written by a computer isn't distinguishable from a real signature?
I thought I’d have a hard time with this, but surprisingly got every one correct! I also learned how to tell forged signatures, thanks for all these cool videos!

my signature varies heavily depending on my mood, if my arthritis is flaring or if i just can’t be arsed to make it the usual xD

I finally decided to go with an intuitive loopy swoopy base line with identifiable starting L, a slanted low line t and a high line kicking slanted H that finishes with a lacklustre slide looking vaguely similar to the starting elongated L with a low line warp some people think it looks symmetrical. It's been my solid signature for 2 years, I haven't added or removed any new flourishes, I feel like it's the most intuitive way to write my sign.

"Certificate of Authenticity" literally means nothing. Many people see one of these pieces of paper and think it means something. It doesn't. It's not a legal document, all it means is "According to (insert random autograph dealer), this signature is real." That means that you or I could make our own CoA right now and say that a fake Harrison Ford autograph is real....according to us. And we wouldn't face any repercussions at all. No one can prove if the actor actually signed it, and the actors themselves don't know or care what they've signed in their lifetime. It's even worse for deceased actors. No one can prove a fake Heath Ledger autograph is real, and the actor himself isn't even around to verify them.
Just because it looks real, doesn't mean it is. I mentioned earlier that many fake autographs can be identified immediately. Others can't. Some forgers do an amazing job of replicating actors' signatures. Just because your autograph looks similar to ones you saw on Google Images doesn't mean it's real. Some actors' signatures are so short, like just their initials or even just a weird scribble, so it's impossible to identify fakes in those cases. Plus, there's a machine called an autopen that exists where someone can mechanically reproduce an actor's autograph in large volumes pretty flawlessly.
Yours is the best video I've come across on authenticating signatures. I have several Beatles "signatures", one that I paid mucho money to have verified and it was returned as false. I couldn't believe it! - for various reasons. You can bet your bootie I'm going to look into it further. Thank you for your video and ability and for sharing your knowledge.

i'm a graduate from a dental school. i forged like 120 supervisors signatures for a friend of mine to help him graduate and it was never spotted and he graduated this year with me. I'm proud of it.

@@LeahEckardt What if my lowercase 's' has the final bar thing extending (sometimes) downward into the lower zone? If it's on the end of a word it often goes horizontally but longer.

Got ‘em all. But I did start forging notes in elementary school. And got paddled so. Lol But in high school I’d forge my parent’s signature & it wasn’t horrible. 😂
I have a double m in my last name that half the time I bobble. I start out and then forget how many humps it should have, I also have a u followed by an i that will sometimes get skipped, or I’ll dot my u…so on all important documents I take my time & then it looks super deliberate and fake 🙄.

Make video about this. Bring 2 people. 1 trying to forge the others signature. Let them do 10 each, so there's 20 signatures in total. Then scramble them. You are given 1 real signature and you have to guess 10 of real signatures and the other 10 that are forged. My signature are simple and inconsistent, I doubt signature expert

I got only 1 error !!! Yay me ,I followed the lesson correctly
I was hit with a fraudulent check of almost 7k that was digitally forged and looked like a bank check. No signature at all. Cashed across the country and luckily my bank didn't hold me accountable but, the bank that cashed it had to eat it

I had a therapist forge my signature on a bunch of stuff when she was saying I was still having sessions for over a year after I moved.. it was nothing even remotely close 😂 dumb b now involved in an fbi case
