Hey Evan... David here, Debbie's husband here. Just wanted to give some input into your building. I would have dug a footer between each of your post where the bottom of your metal is off the ground and poured a footer to lay block on to hold your back fill inside the barn and just let the porch and the outside of the building go as the landscape is, besides some back fill for slopping the runoff away from the sides on the building. The way I see it, it is going to be hard to spread the dirt up under the edges of the bottom of the metal and get it compacted so it doesn't settle after you pour the concrete floor, thus causing cracks in your floor. This would have also saved you some on the amount of back filling you would have to do. Another thing you could do, is form it up under the bottom edges of the metal extending it outward into the inside of the barn, so as to allow you to pour a wall from inside the barn to also hold your back fill inside the barn. Just my thoughts "For what it's worth.
Correct.....without waiting for a LONG time for whatever the fill is to somewhat settle, it will STILL settle more, over time. Just asking for trouble with floor cracking and caving, over time, without solid fill.
I've shared your videos a lot. I share yours on another RUclips channel and then share that channel on your channel, so a lot of RUclips lovers that I know likes yours will like theirs also!!!!!
Wow. Well done. Seems like yesterday you were in your trailer under a carport. Your frugalness has paid off and proven to me (and my wife) what I am doing works. I see a very large Country View Acres logo at the top center of the barn as you approach from the driveway!
Looking great ☺️!!!! I've read all the comments, and again, do it the way you want!!! I love how these "Monday morning quarterbacks" try to cut away at your dream. The Amish do outstanding work and your concrete contractors will get your floor in. They will also know how to do what some of these comments are saying won't be done correctly. You two are doing a wonderful job at building your dream ☺️. Keep up the good work and bring on more videos!!! Love watching you 💖
Rain water collection system with some gutters would be a great addition. Morton built my barn and hauled in 400 tons of different aggregate and built an engineered pad first. They removed all the topsoil and made a big pile on my property. The dirt guy even cut me in a 300’ driveway and installed weed barrier, stone and compacted it in along with building my pad to Morton specs for $2,300. I paid an additional $9,500 for all of the stone and sand delivered. I’m interested to see how the fill will do with compaction. Been watching for years. Hopefully you get your drone working soon.
This is a too late comment but here goes anyway. Usually you do all the grading before building the structure so you can use heavy equipment without being constrained by walls or worrying about damage. It's cheaper and faster and lets you get a compactor everywhere so there is no settling in the future. The barn looks great.
Horizontal boards = purlins. Looking good, I like the color choices. You can always tell a good contractor by how well they clean up the site at the end of the day, these guys do nice work.
Even, you might want to watch the last episode of Out Doors with the Morgan’s . He’s installing 3” insulation around the perimeter of his new poll barn he is going to install radiant heat in the floor. Duncan
Hey! The pole barn looks great, really looking forward to seeing the next part of the development. As well, really wanted to thank you for sharing the costs of not just this project, but many of the things you have acquired or built. Lots of folks never share the money aspect of things, but it is an invaluable resource for many who are looking for information. It is so helpful to see what you can do for how much, and then know what you need to save or how much you need to do yourself to bring costs down to achieve the same result. It gives an awesome baseline for people to compare what they want and can afford, so that projects can be sized appropriately without getting in over their heads and in financial trouble.
Nice building. Comeing from a building career. I dont think you could have picked a better contractor for your project. The quality of the workmanship is excellent. Thank you for sharing
the lean too's are a great addition, most people don't have them put on thier barns when they build one. I use mine all the time to keep implements out of the weather and storage for things I don't want to take up space inside the barn.
crazy suggestion but considering what you just said about the bathroom and the butchering area, what if you did something radical like an indoor/outdoor bathroom? Make it a half bath next to the butchering area like you planned, with a sliding exterior door that leads into an outdoor/emergency shower. a lot of shops and barns need them and you will need to hose off after butchering. You could also access it from the outside without having to enter the barn !
That is a nice pole barn Evan and a big one you will have a lot of room to put equipment in there and still have a lot of room lift I just got getting work done on one of the barns here on the place they had to jack it up and do a lot of work on the inside and a new roof with all new metal on the roof a guy is coming Monday tomorrow to start in painting it it’s going to be red and they put a new shade on the front of it later down the road I will have to put a new roof on the side shade on the other side of the barn it is 52 foot long and like 60 something wide looking forward to the next video y’all stay safe and talk to you then
Hope you have a source for good clean backfill. We got bindweed seed in our fill on the first barn we built. We left procurement of backfill up to the concrete co. Next barn we built we needed to build a "mountain" so we built the platform first, got the fill ourselves - we used fly ash, leveled and packed by soaking with water, then packing with a tractor. We worked on leveling and packing that platform for a month. Then, after the barn was set we poured a narrow (18") skirt around the outside. That was the best idea I ever had. Third barn didn't need much infill so we used local topsoil, but made sure to inspect it carefully before it was loaded to be hauled onto our property. I didn't put the skirt on #3. Big mistake. In spite of the gutter system Bermuda grass grows up the sides 3 foot tall if I don't constantly spray or run the string trimmer monthly spring, summer, fall.
Wow, looks awesome. Great choices on color. Looking forward to end result. Blessings to you and Rebecca. Stay safe and well. From Texas the Lone Star State 🌟
Looking good, I love the color.I can’t wait until you can start using it. God be with you and Rebecca as a big part of your dream home is almost complete. I am so happy for you. Chestene
The barn looks great. One thought. We started butchering our own pigs this winter and are in the process of building our cold room and processing area in our barn to butcher no matter what the weather temps here in Indiana. One important consideration was how to transfer hogs, steers, and deer carcasses to the processing area. I will be slaughtering outside so I want to be able to use my tractor to bring the carcasses into the processing area rather than have to break them down into smaller portions to get to the cooler for hanging. I notice you only have a man door going from the outside into the processing room. At least a small rollup door between the garage into the processing room may be something to think about. I know you are all about self sufficiency like I am and maybe right now you are good with using a processor, but with the uncertainty of butcher dates I wanted to start doing the larger animal processing myself in addition to chicken processing. Just a thought for to future possibilities for you. I really enjoy your videos and hope to see more.
I love the color choices. Having the porch overhangs on the west and south sides is fantastic for blocking out the summer sun while helping with the winter heating. Make sure the concrete contractor strips the top soil off the ground before he brings fill material in. having him compact each layer he brings in will keep your expensive concrete from settling. I'm planning a building next year as well. I may copy your color scheme. Is the roof color the same as the cabin color? What color gutters do you plan to add? are you planning to do any rain water storage from the roof for gardening and animals? The bathroom off the shop is a win for winter. I may add a urinal in my barn as a monument to peeing standing up. Because I can... Creating Videos: I know how much work it takes to put up videos. I hope you make enough to cover the equipment.....your time may not come back to you in dollars for years, but it pays off in community. Thanks!
Looks nice, just puzzled on build time. In Jan. 1984 with sustained 16-20 degree days for a few weeks, frozen ground Morton Buildings with 4 man crew built my 45/72 pole barn 9' on center, steel panel roof & sides, 4 sky lites, 2 entry doors, 2 double slide windows, gutters w/downspouts, 2 sets of sliding track doors complete in 3.8 days. Everything square, no leaks--all A-1 construction for $9300. incl. sales tax. Your Amish crew must have had long commute time as I have never seen a slow moving Amish or Mennonite crew. Anyhow enjoy your many years of use of your bldg.
That is a huge amount of fill and will need to be put in place and compacted before pouring concrete - all while attempting to not damage the building. You may want to consider a retaining wall a few feet from the building in the deepest parts, otherwise the slope away from the building is going to take a lot of truck loads of fill.
Good job matching the the colors with the cabin. Looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing it finished. I can tell you are excited as you move forward. Stay safe.
having had a couple of garages with facilities in them, I would not put in a half bath. I would put in what I have now, a full bath with a roomy shower, why, working on cars trucks and doing woodworking you occasionally can get a little grimy, like the dusk collector bag ripped or you get spayed with oil. you are also putting a butcher shop in the and there is another dirt and dust collector. what happens when you spill lard, other fats and feathers, hair. it is a lot nicer when you don't have to track it into the house. You may also thing about putting a washer and dryer in, no super dirty clothes in the house small appliances are all you need.
That looks very nice, it shows that you are happy about it, and so are we that got to watch it! I hope someone might now anyone that can help you repair your drone, if anyone knows that can do that in their area, give them tips about it :)
Congratulations on getting to this point. You will love the space, and in time the additional cost will be forgotten and you will get a lot of value for the investment. Looking forward to more updates.

Wow!
As someone who wants to buy land and build this type of barn, I really appreciate you being willing to share the costs and steps of your projects.
yes I've been looking at barns online all week and by telling us prices I now know how obsolete those prices are in times of Covid.
how much did it cost? I can't find where he says it
@@user-gu2zh7yp1t $ 48,000 to get the shell completed he said the lumber costs had risen 30% due to covid
