  • This is Polly, by Nirvana from the album Nevermind. I couldn't find a suitable background that would show up with the white text I wanted to use on this song, so I just left it black, and it seems to fit the song pretty good.

For ppl who say that this song doesnt have any sense, Kurt wrote this song after read in the news that a girl was kidnapped, and he wrote the song in first person, taking the position of the kidnapper, I think the lyric is awesome!

Honestly Nirvana played some benefits to help rape victims, including the "Rock Against Rape" concert in 1993, which raised money for a women's self-defense organization. Kurt didnt meant to write this song with those mean intentions. Cobain wrote about an incident, which occurred after the song's original release on Nevermind, in the liner notes to Incesticide: "Last year, a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sang the lyrics to our song 'Polly.' I have a hard time carrying on knowing there are plankton like that in our audience." (thanks, Martin - Rostock, Germany)

Having an addiction myself. I believe Kurt Wrote Polly not knowing it was a cry for help. He was in so much pain that lots of his songs if you listen for the deeper meaning spell out how emotionally hurt he was and if people would have seen the underlined meaning the band did not even know about he might still be with us today.

In the VH1 Classic Albums documentary about Nevermind, bass player Krist Novoselic remembers Cobain writing "Polly" after reading a newspaper article about the abduction, torture and rape in June 1987 of a 14-year-old girl by Gerald Arthur Friend; Friend had picked her up near the Tacoma Dome in his car after she had attended a rock concert. She was able to earn his trust and sympathy by convincing him she enjoyed it. She managed to escape when he stopped for gas. She got out of the vehicle and made a scene attracting attention from surrounding people.

trigger warning!! but it is what the song is about so read with caution please:
    ----
    ----
this song is about a fourteen year old who got kidnapped by a man named gerald. on her way home from a concert the man kidnapped her. the significance behind the lyrics are "to put out the blow torch" meaning he tortured her with a blow torch. "I think I should get off her first" he r*ped her, "don't c*t yourself" he tortured her with a r*zor (i don't really want to say those words because how trigger worthy it is :"/ and since she managed to escape the tortures, the Kidnapper was able to find her and so "let me take a ride" means he took her in his cause for "a ride" it's sad to see how the story pieces together with the lyrics that were composed. let's honor and respect victims of these kinds of things. ❤️

I just watched a 5 part video on you tube about the album Nevermind and the guy that recorded it talks about each song. About that particular bit, he says Kurt started singing too soon but they decided to keep it that way. You can really feel the vibe they recorded the whole thing in, very interesting.

Andrew Polar Kurt accidentally sang too early but he made an act of embracing his mistakes and continued to do that in more perfomancsa purposely. He made his mistake apart of the art of the song.

This true story has very little to do with Nirvana's song, "Polly," except to provide a source of inspiration perhaps. Kurt Cobain's references prove he had no knowledge of the actual events and he knew little of what actually happened to the girl kidnapped by Gerald Friend. I served on the jury that convicted Gerald Friend of the kidnap, rape and torture of this girl. Yes, a fourteen-year-old runaway girl in Tacoma, Washington, was kidnapped by Gerald Friend, but initially, she willingly got into his car with him. The girl had run away from home and had been secretly living in the closets of various friends. She was not kidnapped on her way home from a punk concert as related by Kurt of Nirvana. Friend picked up the runaway girl on lower Pacific Avenue, a known pick-up location for prostitutes at that time, and the belief was that she was turning tricks as she willingly got into his car late one night (later than any fourteen year-old girl would be out alone walking through the seediest part of downtown Tacoma, Washington). Friend first took her for for a hamburger at Frisko Freeze, then took her, with a knife at her throat to keep her silent, into to his single-wide trailer where the rapes occurred. Friend hung the girl upside down in ski boots from a pulley attached to the ceiling of his mobile home and raped and tortured her with a leather whip, a straight razor, dripped hot wax on her, used a hot roller glued to a stick on her, and a blowtorch. She never "flirted" with her captor to trick him into "trusting" her as reportedly mentioned by Cobain. After he was through raping and torturing her, Friend trussed her arms with a leather belt, gagged her with duct tape, and threw her on the floor of the back seat of his car for what could have been the last ride of her life. She escaped from his car when he stopped for gas as he was heading out on rural Highway 7 away from Tacoma. She jumped out of his car and ran into the gas station office and dove behind the clerk's desk, cowering behind the clerk's legs. Friend raced away from the gas station and abandoned his car in a K-Mart parking lot in Lakewood, Washington. Friend was later arrested in Yakima, Washington, and eventually convicted of these crimes. Prior to this particular kidnapping and rape, he had served 20 years for a similar incident where he kidnapped a brother and sister in Pierce County, Washington. He pushed the brother out of his car, took the girl into the woods, tied her to a tree, and raped the sister who also escaped from Friend by swimming across the freezing-cold glacier-fed Mashell River. Friend's parole officer at the time of this conviction believed that he was taking her out towards Mount Rainer where his family owned rural property, and that there are bodies of other girls Friend had disposed of in rural Pierce County.

***** Thank you for your comment!!!! I cannot stand when people take a song and say it makes no sense when they aren't the ones who wrote it. So I suppose since Scott Weiland was a heroin addict that none of the songs he sang made any sense... Or Layne Staley .... I mean saying someone only makes sense to themselves because they're a heroin addict is just dumb. You're talking about some of the greatest musicians that have ever lived that have fought and struggled and sometimes lose their battle with heroin. Still, they are legends. I've never touched the stuff and I can understand their music simply for the love of music.

Kurt wrote the song based on the story Emily has outlined. Spirals, the story was the inspiration for the piece of art. The fine details you discuss are not in the song. It's art not a documentary. It is really terrible that you had to hear all about that and I hope you are well.

Thomas Sluchinski Well, I heard Kurt tell a very disturbing and detailed story about Francis Farmer's hellish ordeal. Perhaps Kurt had a morbid curiosity about such things. Excuse me if I reveled too much detail regarding Kurt's inspiration for his Polly song. I look at human physiological sickness as the main reason we have evil / Satan on planet earth. Once one knows exactly who and what God is one is more then just well. The 7th supreme stage of human development / judgement, is ones transformation into becoming ultra-sane. Thanks anyway.

Rape me in a simplistic view of the song could be seen as Pollys point of view but since Polly was written 2 years earlyer and based of a true story Kurt read in the paper i dont think that was what he had in mind i like to agree with his Biography Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad stated that "Rape Me" seemed to deal with Cobain's distaste of the media's coverage on his personal life." but that's why Kurt made real art you take from it what you want.

This song is right up there with Jeremy and Wish You Were Here. The tragedy of being human in a universe that doesn't give a shit about us. We are crushed by the absurdity of our existence. The hero of absurdism lives every day without meaning and the desire to commit suicide but doesn't succumb to it.

"Cobain wrote "Polly" about an incident in Tacoma, Washington involving the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl in August 1987.[9] Gerald Arthur Friend kidnapped the girl while she was leaving a rock concert, suspended her upside down from a pulley in his mobile home and raped and tortured her with a blow torch.[10][11] She managed to escape by jumping from his truck at a gas station, attracting attention from surrounding people. Arthur was later arrested and convicted for his crimes.[12][10][11] Cobain's addition to the story was to have the victim fool the kidnapper into thinking she was enjoying what he was doing to her, causing him to let his guard down long enough for her to escape."

    Polly wants a cracker
I think I should get off her first
I think she wants some water
To put out the blow torch
    Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip your dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
    Want some help, please myself
    Got some rope, haven't told
    Promise you, have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
    Want some help, please myself
    Polly wants a cracker
Maybe she would like some food
She asked me to untie her
A chase would be nice for a few
    Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip your dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
    Want some help, please myself
    Got some rope, haven't told
    Promise you, have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
    Want some help, please myself
    Polly said
    Polly says her back hurts
She's just as bored as me
She caught me off my guard
Amazes me the will of instinct
    Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip your dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
    Want some help, please myself
