Don’t mistake the sound as it’s bad on cold days. The fluid has to get warm and on cold starts could make some noise as long as it’s silent when turning the wheel it should be okay. Also sometimes the fluid gets dirty or you could have a leak and dirty or low fluid can cause noise too. So before you buy a new pump try changing the fluid first or check for leaks.
How refreshing... I just asked my wife to sit in the car and turn the wheel to left and then right lock so I could hear if the steering was faulty. She said "That's men's stuff" and refused ! It's HER car too ! She is so un-mechanical; she struggles with house door locks and screams when she sees a mouse too... Decent chubbies though...
Yes! I have a 2002 e300 and it was making the exact same noises! And my mechanic just diagnosed with same issue. Listening to your car, will tell you when it needs attention!
@@DaylyDriverDayly would you know why my car makes alot of whining noises after starting it after it sits or the next day, also unless I give it gas it would stall and cut off
First of all thanks for the information , Second I love how well you respond to criticism positively reading these comments and people lack that so , best of luck .
I have a different Lexus but exact problem. I was guessing this was the problem before I found your video. Now that I've found your video, it's confirmed. Thank you.
Also ppl say your rack in pinnen is also connected to your power stearring pump, anyways I'm truly sorry for all these messages just trying to get this car problem fixed thank you kindly for your help,👍👍
no problem. check the fluid level first to make sure there is enough fluid on the system, check the lines for leaks. it's usually a leaky line somewhere causing the problem
I appreciate your time. I’ve had a power steering leak for a while and just now noticed this whining sound even after topping it off. I have a hose to fix the leak I already have a mechanic coming to fix it and hopefully it fixes the whining sound. Otherwise I might have a bad pump too. Also I noticed a minor burn smell too.
there is a screen inside the power steering fluid reservoir that clogs. that could be the problem. if it has visible leaks it's more than likely a hose
Good video. Quick note: You can't hear outside noise in any Lexus they're really sealed tight. And also if your power steering fluid reservoir keeps disappearing and or if you smell burning outside the car the pump is bad.
true they are very quiet from inside. doesnt mean the pump is bad, the burning smell can be from multiple things leaking and being burned on the exhaust or other hot areas of the engine. there would more than likely be a bad leak which would starve the pump of fluid causing it to overheat and wear out over time
@@DaylyDriverDayly Oh yes I didn't type that quite. Sometimes when the pump goes you smell that burnt fluid smell but there's no leak. I like to fix what I can myself but if I can't I still want to know what the problem is before I take it to anybody. Great video!!!!!
I had a whine on start up. That stopped and now all is quiet but steering has become stiff at low speeds. Having looked under the hood of my '05 RX 330 I think I am going to pay someone to replace the bad pump. Thanks for the good content!
@@mercow1242 I have been flushing the reservoir. The fluid might have never been changed in 16 years. Really dark. My brother had a similar problem, he said the bypass valve may be jammed open and new fluid might fix it. It is weird, sometimes it seems OK, bet mostly real stiff. I am going to change the oil next week, if I can I will pull a hose and drain the whole pump. I'll keep you posted.
I had a power steering pump noise. Thought it was cavitating. Changed the pump with a good looking pump from the junk yard. Then again worth a brand new pump from Autozone. Then changes the rack. After a bunch of work it turned out to be the altinator. Sounds pretty stupid but it was very frustrating and emberassing on top of that. Just putting this on here for others to contemplate. Hate for any on else to go through this.
Daily Driver Thanks for the video. My car have the same noise but my well is normal, no stiff, hard or anything, and the noise is louder when I push the gas pedal!
when you hit the gas pedal, fluids are forced through the steering system faster. you probably have an issue within the power steering system. I would have it checked professionally
I've heard if the steering wheel is crooked significantly, it is certainly a problem w/power steering rack (as far as I understand the problem can't be fixed then just by simply moving in and out Outer Tie Rods in corresponding directions). Mine is crooked ~45 degrees to the right, no steering fluid leeks observed (I saw some fluid inside of the boot ~ 8 months ago, when changed Inner TR (on driver side only, on passenger it was dry), but I think it is very small, since the fluid level doesn't change). I don't remember when that problem w/crooked wheel developed, I don't drive that car a lot, but I hit a limiting concrete bar which they conveniently locate at some parking lot 4-5 days ago, and noticed 45 degrees after that event. So what can happen to a steering rack, what can be wrong, if no leak observed? The car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. Thank you very much for the informative film.
appreciate the feedback. it sounds like you have an alignment issue which, if you hit something on the front end can be a number of things. I would suggest getting it inspected in person that way they can pinpoint the issue/issues for you up front
@@DaylyDriverDayly Thank you. I recently noticed that the wider part of the boot got disconnected fm the Rack, there was a damaged and crooked over a metal clamp inside of the Rack opening. Since the boot was turned ~180 degrees, I suspect that the mechanic didn't remove the small ring-clamp on the boot during alignment and the boot was torn and he didn't noticed it. Anyway I replaced the boot via disconnecting the Inner and Outer TRs with the original firm boot. The one I has before was soft ACDelco boot. Probably I didn't attached the clamp tight enough and all that happened during alignment. I'll go to dealer anyway for another alignment (since put new tires) and double check w/them. Also the husband did have a severe blow on the front some time ago, maybe we just didn't notice that crooked wheel. But I was on alignment at decent dealership after that, they would tell me about the problem. Thank you again.
they are. they are a cheap fix if you order the parts and do it yourself. the thing with the steering lines are that the threads can get stripped easily. have to make sure they are installed straight to thread properly. dont overtighten them
What usually goes wrong with the power steering pump? What causes them to go bad? They seem like fairly simple designs. Second question why do they usually go bad on cold mornings?
nothing usually unless there isn't enough steering fluid going through it that can cause it to wear out to wear out fast. the problem is more than likely a bad power steering hose, a seal or the reservoir. they dont go bad in the morning, it's the fact that if the fluid isn't heated up when you start it on a cold morning it takes a minute for the fluid to get flowing through the system. that's why you may hear a whining sound on some mornings when you start the car. dowsnt mean the pump is bad
Thanks for the video. Just bought a total shitbox to fix up and the power steering seemed fine but now im hearing that sound. Idk why people r complaining so much like turn up ur volume
Everyone has their own opinion weather it be positive or negative opinion. If the feedback helps me improve my videos, then I will interpret it into making better quality videos. If it is a nonsense comment, I won't waste my time or energy with it.
Question: I definitely have a steering issue with my BMW e30, but I can't yet determine where the problem is. So I'm trying to figure whether it is or isn't the pump. Thanks for the video...very helpful. In my case, there's no strange or noticeable noise coming from the front at all. Fluid in the reservoir seems full and clean (but I can't recall ever servicing or have changed the fluid...). A garage dude who is supposed to know these cars intimately, feels certain that my pump is bad...that it does run, but doesn't circulate any fluid. He said he knows that because he took the lid off the fluid reservoir with the engine running, and it should be easy to see the fluid circulating...he says that in mine, there's no visible fluid movement at all, so case closed. But is this a valid explanation ? You do not mention this alleged symptom in the video. There's no pump noise, no signs of leaking, no whining when turning the wheel, reservoir is full and clean. I'm thinking its something other than the pump....??
if the power steering belt is turning than the pump should be working. if not, the reservoir can get clogged and not allow fluid to flow through which can then starve the pump of fluid and cause it to fail. if there is no pressure in the system like you say is seemingly the case I would check the power steering lines as well. it could just be the pump that needs replacing. it doesnt always leak when bad. I believe it could just be a bad pump or reservoir
@@DaylyDriverDayly Thanks for the reply. Turned out to be a completely seized universal joint in the steering linkage connecting the column and rack. A BMW DIYer diagnosed, replaced the foot-long part, and got me the car back in about 3 hours. @@DB-gr7ch that's good to know you located the problem and repaired it. your steering system is a safety concern when there is a problem with it, especially the steering. thanks for letting me know. hope you get many more miles of enjoyment out of the car👌👌
Is the outter (dry belt) which is also called the (certene belt) which has some pulleys on it, does the power stearring pump run off of this..?? Also if thier is tiny tiny little air bubles in your power stearring fluid is this normal.?? Ppl do say it's not normal to have any bubles in your power stearring fluid ... Is on an Acura 2004 not 2003 had wrong year before in my first message... Also stearring left to right is not hard at all, I know for a fact that the certain belt the dry belt on the out side is bad need to change it most definitely loud noise from the pulleys...
Also when I had the water pump replaced unfortunately for this yr make in model just to get to the water pump so much to take off timing belt pulleys etc 6hr of labor also you half to take the hoes off from the power stearring fluid resolver container maybe the hoes to mine wasn't put back in its causing the power streaing pump to act up and because of the outter pulleys is a bad certain belt thinking the power stearring pump runs off of this outter dry belt ceraitn belt
My car is makes a squeaking noise when I start it and when I turn. It is also hard to turn, it only gets easier to turn after I let it warm up and even then sometimes it'll make the noise. I've had this problem before mainly during winter time, no noise this summer. I don't know much about cars and I wanted to know if you can help based on what I said.
could be the fluid type you are using during the winter months. especially living in a cold area you should use specific power steering fluid made for the cold weather. what's happening is the fluid isn't flowing through the system because the car is soo cold. when it heats up the fluid is able to flow through the system
I see that you have a leak and the whining and hard steering are caused by the lack of fluid, but its a jump to assume the pump is bad, unless these continue once your fill it back up.
There may be a clogged filter. That can cause problems too. A lot of times it is a screen in the reservoir on many cars. For some cars that filter is not replaceable without changing the reservoir.
How about if the hoses connected to the resovoir are wet? As well as the hose on the other side of the pump? I replaced a power steering pump about a year ago but I didn't replace the hoses. I suspect it's just the hoses that need replacing
I would check the clamps on the hoses to make sure they are properly fastened. check the lines for hardness or cracks. that tends to happen with time. I'm guessing it's the hoses that need replacing
I'm happy to hear that. I want to make content to help others and any feedback that will help me help more people is exactly what I want. thanks for your response 👌👌
Thanks for the vid. Ik my power steering is going out bc it screeches really loud especially if driven cold but I've recently had to serpentine belts break in about 4-5 weeks. I noticed that the pulley stops turning or slows down at least when I have the steering wheel turned. Prob a stupid ? but do you think that's why the belt keeps breaking? All 3 broke the 1st time but just the 1 this last time.
Im worried that my car might have a PS rack issue as well. There’s a rip in the boot and it’s leaking fluid. Not bad at all, might be a drop once a day, it’s mostly just really wet. My question is if I need to replace the rack too. I know it would be a good idea, but I don’t have the money to replace the rack too unless it won’t solve the initial problem (no power steering at very low speed, constant whine, jittery steering). Im thinking maybe air and debris is getting into the PS rack, which might cause the pump to go bad?
My car whines when I first start it up when the engine is cold. As soon as the gauge reaches the middle it stops whining but still whines when I turn the wheel. Wheel turns easily though as long as I keep fluid in the car (has a leak causing me to have to put in about 3 ounces every few days).
you probably have a bad power steering line or hose that needs to be replaced. It could be that the pump is being starved of fluid due to the leak causing it to whine. I would check the power steering high pressure and return lines. these will start leaking and drain the system causing wear and tear to the pump itself
@@thomasashe2681 the pump is probably worn out from having had a lack of fluid pumped through it due to the leak you said it was having. I wouldn't doubt you more than likely need a new pump. I would have a tech give it a second opinion who can diagnose it in person 👌
I have the exact opposite problem, no whining or steering issues while cold, but once it runs for a while (like 30 mins) the pump starts whining, and i get the not smooth steering issues. Im guessing hoses, because the pump wouldnt cause that, right?
The only noise I’m hearing in my car at this time is a very high-pitched noise whenever I press on the gas pedal as I’m driving. I do not hear the noises you are describing in the video while I’m driving. When I turn the steering wheel left and right you don’t hear noise at all just a high-pitched sound from hitting on the gas pedal. I went to two different mechanics who are insisting that this is the power steering pump needing to be replaced. Can you confirm this?
would have to get it diagnosed. im thinking their is a problem in the steering column or rack. i would have it checked. their is a plastic part inside the column that allows the wheel to turn and that could possibly be the problem. i would have it checked out
Your hood was propped on the cold start, the audio vibrations from the whine we’re not able to reverberate back into the cabin as loud as you would with it closed.
Side note, dry steering is bad for your cars steering as a whole, especially on the tires and the pump. However useful for the test, you can get even better feedback parked between 1/2 cars. Dry turn a little, and some revs will prevent restriction to the pump to get an even bigger feedback. The pump will be pissed... but you’ll get much better results to narrow down the whine.
I hear this humming noise, but I cant figure if its coming from my steering or transmission. I seen fluid on the ground. My truck sit up for 2yrs because i couldnt figure out why it wasnt starting and when it started it kept misfiring
it could be from both worst case scenario. I would have a mechanic look it over especially if you have had it sitting for a while. sounds like it's going to need a fair amount of work done to it
My power steering pump is bad but no longer makes noise. And now my steering is out of alignment. Will this be fixed if I just replace the pump? I replaced the houses already
Happened to me today where my power steering service light came on in my Cadillac. The steering got tough. I did look and was out of fluid and did top it off and when I turned the car on it showed no messages and the turning was good. I took a quick drive about 20 mins later and it showed the message again and had tough steering and was making those whining noises but had no visible leaks.
you definitely have a leak(s) in the line(s) somewhere. there is no way the car would lose that much steering fluid in that short of time unless there was a major leak somewhere. I would check it out again. the whining is from the power steering pump running without fluid running through it
Daily Driver right I just checked again it’s completely full. It is making the sound but didn’t have the power steering service light come back on when I drove back home from the short trip I made.
@@jordanrodriguez5436 The pump is either not getting enough fluid pumped through it which could mean the reservoir is clogged or the pump is on its way out
So let me explain what’s going on with my power steering. The steering is never hard to turn and the reservoir is never low. I have a 2015 Infiniti Q70L that requires an ATF fluid. My power steering pump randomly makes noise at idle. The ATF fluid is clean and is replaced every 50,000 miles. Currently my Infiniti has 156,000 miles. I performed a vacuum test at 20 pounds of mercury and it passed the test for five minutes. Even though it’s been vacuum tested is there anyway an air pocket could be present in the system? Or is my power steering pump simply need to be replaced? Thankfully I can purchase a brand new Hitachi Power steering pump which happens to be the OEM provider for a reasonable price. Keep in mind I am a rideshare driver that is on the road constantly picking up passengers.
Hey i kinda have this problem. when i start the car up, the power steering works like you described, it turns a little but not much. light noise when i do that. but when i get around a few corners, the power steering does just fine, even when stopped. Im planning on replacing the pump but do you have and tips?
My lexus doesnt whine from the PS pump, but when i turn left at a stop or low speeds it makes rubbing/ stuttering sound. You can see the wheels stutter from outside the car. I have wider wheels and poly control arm bushings, along with new steering rack bushings. Any idea what it might be? Just bled the system and topped the fluid off.
@MackNified how did you go Mack? i was wondering if your front wheel bearings aren't the problem there. Ive had this stuttering noise in an e36 which eventually became a whine then a growling noise, same thing in a daughters Ford Festiva. after swapping out the front wheel bearings in the festiva the noises were gone and the front end felt much better. Im about to do this on the e36, before that though I'll replace the fluid (pump out and re-fill 3 times with turning of the wheel lock to lock between each refill to flush out old fluid) first to see if that makes a difference and check the steering knuckle for excessive wear or seizure. Another reply mentions the steering linkage universal joint (knuckle) being seized caused his heavy steering.
My Ford Fiesta 2008 does that. I do a full lock on the steering wheel I can feel the full car shake. Steering wheel makes a whining noise but worse when cold. Do a full lock sounds like the steering wheel is gonna break. Shaky steering wheel Guess what my car still passes it's MOT with these minor problems. Had my car MOT & Serviced last month. Clutch went on me car had to get towed away as it was undriveable. (clutch was worn out when got the car) Brakes feel spongy recently, (This problem happened a few days ago. Just leave it till my next MOT Reliable car but repairs can be expensive😁
If you hear a whining noise first check and see if your power steering level is low fill that if it keeps leaking it's either a faulty power steering high pressure line or like the person in the video says if the pump is wet it is probably leaking and needs to be replaced
Hey just a quick question if you could spare the time! I just had replace my power steering pump, and pressure line/hose and i have no leaks at all and its not stiff to turn but i still have whining noise? What could it be and Whats the likelihood of receiving a bad power steering pump from autozone? When i turn wheel lock to lock am i suppose to see movement in reservoir if so i do not?
Great question. Not having personally diagnosed the car myself, I would guess that you may have a clogged power steering reservoir or even a worn out pulley and tensioner
I appreciate the quick response! The sound seems like its coming from the pump area doesnt whine too loud while idle but when stepping on throttle or turning while accelerating about 2k rpm it whines loud. P.s bro just wanna say you look like jesse pinkman from breaking bad 🤟🏼
it could be that the reservoir is clogged and wearing out the pump. you could need a new reservoir and pump. I would have it verified by a mechanic first

Thanks for clearing this up for me. People are telling me that my pump is done but I don't have these symptoms. The only thing is there's a leak somewhere. My guess its a simple job and these liars are trying to take my money. I'm not stupid; I know if I have a bad pump my steering will be hard to turn. My check engine light goes on and off. One mechanic did a diagnostic test on it and found nothing. He reset it and said if it goes back on to see him. What do you think it might be?
Exchanged my fluid in my 2010 Dodge Dakota. Used the correct fluid no noise but it is stiff and at times after I am out on the road it seems to improve intermittently. Could this still be a pump failure?
2018 corolla hearing a grinding or whooshing noise while in motion and turning left or righ. This happens in cold . Im female knowledge of cars zero. Car being service by company but they cannot hear noise suggestions. Oh my steering rack had to be tighten.
To what I know your car has electric power steering. I have 2015 Camry and mine is electric power steering. Sometimes I get noises or stiffness but I feel is my struts since I still have the oem struts in my camry. And struts help the rack to steer easier and smoother. But you should take your car with someone local shop or family member that can find issue
Similar symptoms going on for my 07’ Impala but… my fluid is almost full where it needs to be but im getting whining on my low-speed turns and hard/to/steer as well. Could this be a line leak? Or pump has failed.
Thanks for the video, but my 2009 Impala steering pump is not leaking fluid and is not low on fluid either, yet I have that same noise and it’s hard to turn the wheel. 🤷🏼♂️
the daily driver It is cold here in Dallas Texas but not all THAT cold really. My 2009 Impala takes generic Power Steering fluid. Whenever I take the cap off there is a puff of pressured air that comes out. Today I ran it with the cap off and then added some fluid even though it looked like it didn’t need any. I haven’t driven it yet after I added the fluid, but I did turn the wheel a few times to try to cycle it through, but it still has that same whine. Thank you for any advice or insight you have. 🙏🏻
You probably have a bad pump and reservoir. What happens is the filter inside the reservoir can get clogged causing the pump to wear out. I would say the pump and reservoir need to be replaced.
the daily driver Drove it to work this morning and no whine! Dunno how long that’ll last depending on what was causing it, but I’ll take the wins where I can find them!
I need your help. 2 weeks ago I got in my car and the steering was very loose and clicks. Driving on a straight road is hard because my car feels disconnected from the road. I feel like the loose steering is forcing me to sway. I took the car to 2 mechanics 1 told me I was crazy the other one told me my rack is worn out
I was going to say it's most likely something with the steering rack or something within the steering column. I would have a third opinion on the car because it's a safety hazard driving the car like that
Suppose your going to buy a old project car for very cheap but it’s had accidental damage, it still runs & drives in auto but the steering is hard to turn, the power Streering bottle is has air coming out of it, and one of the hoses are cut so leaking, but apart from that looks solid, should I go for it only 45,000 on the clock
it's probably got a bad power steering reservoir cap and high pressure line and return line. not expensive at all to fix. if you can get it for cheap enough it doesnt sound like a bad deal at all. what price do you think you can get the car for?
My 06 Honda Pilot makes that noise only on cold starts and goes away after a couple minutes of driving and is fine throughout the rest of the day of taking it for an errand again. Is that okay ?
I was just in line at the car wash with ym husbands car, filled it with gas and it drove fine all the way there, no noises when starting up, no noise when turning everything totally normal. So while I'm waiting my turn in line a light on the dashboard turns on and the steering wheel stiffens up. So of course I go into a panic and get through the wash and everything managed to drive it back home ok. Although, turning and trying to shift gears was a little interesting. So I got home checked and the fluid level was fine. I ran my hand down the hose and it was quite filthy so I assume a leak is coming from somewhere. This is a 2011 Mazda 3. Not sure if pump related because there is no noise, or could it just be the hoses?
if the check engine light popped up and then you had issues steering the car their is more than likely a mechanical issue not related to the power steering system. there are many things it could be. best suggestion is to run the code on the crr to see where the issue is coming from. power steering leaks wont pull a code on the dash and they are common on older vehicles
It was the "Power Steering Malfunction" light. Not a check engine light. Would it still be good to check a code? The car has been sitting for 2 weeks in the driveway without being run and this was the first time it's been started. I didn't know if that might have anything to do with it or just a coincidence.
@@victoriakowalski3674 if the power steering light came kn you are probably low on fluid. I would check the fluid level. you obviously have a leak in the system which you should fix to correct the low fluid issue
Thanks for responding so quickly. I did check the fluid level and it was just slightly below the max level, so it's definitely not empty. I usually feel pretty comfortable doing some work on cars, so I will play to take apart what I can to inspect hoses and whatnot. But don't wanna jump into a massive project.
tip. stop talking when trying to relay the noise through audio. Speak it, then let the noise come through so we can hear. But good info here still. ty.
Informative... But I didn't hear you mention anything about powersteering fluid, I think when diagnosing an issue you should start with the basic things first.. Fluid level in this case, before deeming the pump defective... Just my 2 cents.. Great video tho.
My power steering fluid exploded all over the top of my engine (gs300) I put more ps fluid and it disappeared.. I can’t see any noticeable leaks.. where and how would it erupt like that? Does that mean pump is bad? Or a hose… or something I’m not seeing?
Hi.. I have a 2001 Honda Accord Ex. I hear whining noise when I start the car and turn the wheel. If I let it run 20min, no noise with turning wheel or idle. Summer/noise doesn't return while driving. Winter, same issue but louder & noise returns after driving for a while. Start with belt or pump? Fluid has been checked, no issue there
I would check to see how the pulleys are. you may have a bad tensioner on one of the pulleys causing the noise. tensioners commonly go out. if that's not the case, check the pump and lines to the reservoir to see if there are any leaks anywhere.
If I’ve replaced the power steering pump twice and still have a whining noise and there’s no rack and pinion steering on my 2003 jeep Laredo, what could be the problem?
I'm glad you own one, such an excellent and fun car. I am not certain but you could have a worn out steering rack. there are joints that attach to the steering system that wear out and could be the cause. i would have a mechanic to check the problem to verify. what year and miles is yours?

@@aritobias8143 thank you I appreciate it. you have a very low mile sc400. I hope you enjoy the car. make sure to get the issue fixed because I've lost steering before in my sc and it's dangerous. definitely dont want any issues
I had the same problem, it’s either the power steering pressure hose or it’s the pump and the hose. Also check your engine mounts, they are usually first to go then the vibration from the engine starts to throw the rubber belt out of alignment when turning. So then the power steering pump starts to go.
Is it okay to add different type ps oil? I mean, Once i fill with specific power steering oil and later add atf, is it okay or its gonna be a problem? (yes my car allowed to use atf for the power steering)
I would stick with one fluid or another, but it is okay to use a mixture of synthetic and non synthetic power steering fluid. Depending on the climate you live in.
I have an 06 ford five hundred. With the front wheels off ground the steering moves freely. Tires on ground the wheel is incredibly difficult to move. Flushed out all the old dirty fluid. Twice. Turned wheel while off ground to remove air pockets. Fluid is still being circulated thru the system. Any ideas on what the problem is?
so it's hard to turn the wheel at a stop how is turning the wheel when you are driving? have you check the power steering or serpentine belt depending the car you have? so if you did a flush and bleed the system it's obviously something else. is it making any noises when turning the wheel?
My 95 sc400 steering gets really tight and almost locks up when I try and turn after I drive it for a while at freeway speeds. It fixes itself after I slow down and stop for a while. Do you think that's the power steering pump?
you probably have a bad rack and pinion steering. I'd have a mechanic take a look at it to be sure. it sounds like a driveability concern from what you are saying
What if you hear like a nocking sound or like a tap tap tap tap tap tap sound instead of a humming sound and the tapping occurs without turning the wheel? Thank you.
What’s the difference in symptoms between a bad power steering pump and a bad power steering rack?? I know for sure my pump is bad but how do I know if my rack is bad too?? Thanks for the video!!
the symptoms can be similar. with a bad rack, your steering can get really tight and almost stuck when you go to turn the wheel (not good). this can be dangerous to say the least. a bad pump is going to make lots of noise and the steering will get tighter, but not as bad as when your rack and pinion is shot
hi when I start the engine it is fine it makes no noise and drives when I try to turn a corner it screeches like hell and is REALLY difficult to turn the wheel
check the wheel well for anything in the way rubbing the wheels. also, there may be an issue with the power steering rack or fluid level. there are multiple things that can cause this issue. I would have it inspected by a professional 👌👌
What if I have no noise from the pump even when turning it but the wheel is extremely tight? I was driving home and stopped at my mom's house and left my car running and then all of a sudden the wheel got really stiff when I was leaving.
I Feeling worried that my mechanic changed my pump and didn’t use a brand new one. He charged me 425 and he said it didn’t go in well there was fluid all over the place. What do you thibk
did you check the fluid level on the power steering reservoir? do you have any leaks in the power steering lines? It could just be the type of fluid you are using in the car or the fact that the fluid is not flowing properly through the system

I agree with that 👌

no problem. check the fluid level first to make sure there is enough fluid on the system, check the lines for leaks. it's usually a leaky line somewhere causing the problem
I appreciate your time. I’ve had a power steering leak for a while and just now noticed this whining sound even after topping it off. I have a hose to fix the leak I already have a mechanic coming to fix it and hopefully it fixes the whining sound. Otherwise I might have a bad pump too. Also I noticed a minor burn smell too.
the whining is from the pump being starved of fluid. hopefully you got it fixed
how did it go, also did the burning smell go away?
there is a screen inside the power steering fluid reservoir that clogs. that could be the problem. if it has visible leaks it's more than likely a hose
@@bookabooka_1950 no

@@DaylyDriverDayly I'll do that thanks so much!
Daily Driver have the same problem but someone told me to check steering fuse...is it related?
Thank you again.
sounds like alignment issues, especially if you hit something. check that and go from there
@@DaylyDriverDayly I will, thank you.
Ahhh the 90s Lexus power steering systems are lovely aren’t they
they are. they are a cheap fix if you order the parts and do it yourself. the thing with the steering lines are that the threads can get stripped easily. have to make sure they are installed straight to thread properly. dont overtighten them
What usually goes wrong with the power steering pump?

@Martina Smith yep. it's a straight forward and simple fix 👌
I see that you have a leak and the whining and hard steering are caused by the lack of fluid, but its a jump to assume the pump is bad, unless these continue once your fill it back up.
Sorry, I can't hear the whining over the sound of my own cars wining lol
A indication of a leak, may be a possibility of bad high are lower pressure steering hose, not just neccesarily the pump itself.
You mean the high pressure and return lines? Those definitely can leak and be an issue 👍
There may be a clogged filter. That can cause problems too. A lot of times it is a screen in the reservoir on many cars. For some cars that filter is not replaceable without changing the reservoir.
that is correct. thanks for the feedback 👌
yes high pressure and return hose, if leaking could cause bad steering.
To be honest I heard the sound clearly and I thought this was a good video.
Crazy to find that we both have the same car and the same problem. Thanks for the video!
it is a common issue with these vehicles. thanks for dropping a comment👌
Not actually that crazy lol. 😋
Thanks, quick and to the point video. Helped me confirm my PS is going and need replacing.
And I thought the pump was bad.
@@thomasashe2681 the pump is probably worn out from having had a lack of fluid pumped through it due to the leak you said it was having. I wouldn't doubt you more than likely need a new pump. I would have a tech give it a second opinion who can diagnose it in person 👌
Thanks, all I needed to know. Nice car you have there.
glad the video worked for you👌
I have the exact opposite problem, no whining or steering issues while cold, but once it runs for a while (like 30 mins) the pump starts whining, and i get the not smooth steering issues.
Power steering pump is 1 month old. No leaking. No noise. Cannot turn wheel. Do I need a new pump? Ford Taurus SE 2007.
would have to get it diagnosed. im thinking their is a problem in the steering column or rack. i would have it checked. their is a plastic part inside the column that allows the wheel to turn and that could possibly be the problem. i would have it checked out
Brent Campbell when that happened to me, it needed a power steering Flush.
@@pj5875 that could be the case as well
Your engine is so clean and shiny compared to mine
Your hood was propped on the cold start, the audio vibrations from the whine we’re not able to reverberate back into the cabin as loud as you would with it closed.
Side note, dry steering is bad for your cars steering as a whole, especially on the tires and the pump.
However useful for the test, you can get even better feedback parked between 1/2 cars. Dry turn a little, and some revs will prevent restriction to the pump to get an even bigger feedback. The pump will be pissed... but you’ll get much better results to narrow down the whine.
there were a couple of issues concerning sound when making the video. need to be more prepared with better sound equipment for filming

My power steering pump is bad but no longer makes noise. And now my steering is out of alignment. Will this be fixed if I just replace the pump? I replaced the houses already
I would have a mechanic check the rack and pinion, but if you know for certain the pump is bad I would replace it
Happened to me today where my power steering service light came on in my Cadillac.
Shaky steering wheel

If you hear a whining noise first check and see if your power steering level is low fill that if it keeps leaking it's either a faulty power steering high pressure line or like the person in the video says if the pump is wet it is probably leaking and needs to be replaced
Pretty straight forward and accurate thanks
Hey just a quick question if you could spare the time! I just had replace my power steering pump, and pressure line/hose and i have no leaks at all and its not stiff to turn but i still have whining noise? What could it be and Whats the likelihood of receiving a bad power steering pump from autozone? When i turn wheel lock to lock am i suppose to see movement in reservoir if so i do not?
Great question. Not having personally diagnosed the car myself, I would guess that you may have a clogged power steering reservoir or even a worn out pulley and tensioner
Have you tried diagnosing where the sound is coming from under the hood?
I appreciate the quick response! The sound seems like its coming from the pump area doesnt whine too loud while idle but when stepping on throttle or turning while accelerating about 2k rpm it whines loud. P.s bro just wanna say you look like jesse pinkman from breaking bad 🤟🏼
Air in the lines will cause this also. Use a vacuum pump to remove the air.
Great video. My steering is very stiff but there is no whining and the fluid reservoir is full of fluid. Do you think it's the pump? Thanks.
it could be that the reservoir is clogged and wearing out the pump. you could need a new reservoir and pump. I would have it verified by a mechanic first

@@victoriakowalski3674 no problem. definitely check the lines for leaks and how clean the fluid is.
tip. stop talking when trying to relay the noise through audio. Speak it, then let the noise come through so we can hear. But good info here still. ty.
thanks for the feedback. I will make sure to correct that in my future videos
I heard same noise on my 2017 Nissan Altima know I know what is that noise thank you buddy
you may want to add power steering fluid. what's happening is the pump isn't getting enough fluid. thanks for watching and reaching out😁
I have a 2017 Altima too and it whines really bad on cold start
If the pump has no oil it’s not necessary a bad pump it’s just is leaking.
What about if it doesn’t make noise, but it’s stiff to turn? Still power steering pump?
@@DaylyDriverDayly Thank you!!!
@@chelw441 you're welcome👌
If I’ve replaced the power steering pump twice and still have a whining noise and there’s no rack and pinion steering on my 2003 jeep Laredo, what could be the problem?
My heart dropped when I saw you have a 400 just like me 😭😭😭😭 I was hoping it was just fluid . Mine isn’t making noise but it’s so stiff
I'm glad you own one, such an excellent and fun car. I am not certain but you could have a worn out steering rack. there are joints that attach to the steering system that wear out and could be the cause. i would have a mechanic to check the problem to verify. what year and miles is yours?
Daily Driver 1992 , 113,000 miles .
I don’t drive it very much and I believe that contributed to its death . That’s for taking the time to reply ! Great vids
@@aritobias8143 thank you I appreciate it. you have a very low mile sc400. I hope you enjoy the car. make sure to get the issue fixed because I've lost steering before in my sc and it's dangerous. definitely dont want any issues
Does a power steering pump going bad take out the racket and pinion?
good day may altima 2010 has hard steering when idle only or making parking maneuver. when cruising the steering is soft. any advice from you?
@@DaylyDriverDayly noted. Thank You
@@viarez12 certainly. you are welcome
Mine does not have any leaks but the pressure hose broke and leaks oil can it be the reason am having the whining noise?
yes absolutely. if there isnt enough oil getting to the pump it's being starved of fluid. fix the line before you destroy the pump
My 2010 impala doing it now after being down without a battery for two weeks but it’s gurgling and the steering wheel kinda tight
@@DaylyDriverDayly yeah I almost crashed on an off ramp that's how I found out lol
@@joshg.9390 holy cow!! the worst way possibly to find out how serious the problem is. you getting it fixed soon?
What if you hear like a nocking sound or like a tap tap tap tap tap tap sound instead of a humming sound and the tapping occurs without turning the wheel? Thank you.
I had one like that on one car. It was a bad wheel bearing. I replaced it and the problem gun.
Ok so I have a ford focus 2009 leaking in the reservoir I’m trying to see if it’s a pump or hose
Can a bad power steering pump cause the check engine light to go on?
hi when I start the engine it is fine it makes no noise and drives when I try to turn a corner it screeches like hell and is REALLY difficult to turn the wheel
check the wheel well for anything in the way rubbing the wheels. also, there may be an issue with the power steering rack or fluid level. there are multiple things that can cause this issue. I would have it inspected by a professional 👌👌
@@DaylyDriverDayly thankyou for your reply I will look for a call out mechanic
@@janlinden7685 best to have it inspected in person than trying to guess the issue👌
@@DaylyDriverDayly Yes I have a mechanic coming, thanks for your reply.
@@janlinden7685 no problem. should be an easy fix
What if I have no noise from the pump even when turning it but the wheel is extremely tight? I was driving home and stopped at my mom's house and left my car running and then all of a sudden the wheel got really stiff when I was leaving.
Hi,i am having the same problem on my merc w204, no idea what it isHave you got your problem fixed?
I
Feeling worried that my mechanic changed my pump and didn’t use a brand new one. He charged me 425 and he said it didn’t go in well there was fluid all over the place. What do you thibk
he could have disconnected the power steering fluid lines that made the mess from the reservoir. sounds like he didnt clean up the mess he made
i have a 1999 lexus es300 cold start i hear a similar whine. i thought its a starter problem but i replaced it and dint fix.
did you check the fluid level on the power steering reservoir? do you have any leaks in the power steering lines? It could just be the type of fluid you are using in the car or the fact that the fluid is not flowing properly through the system
@@DaylyDriverDayly fluid seems perfect. not black or super dark its like orangeish and i dont suspect any leaks. if you go to my channel you can see a video showing noise
Daily Driver pressure test power steering pump to be sure Incase it not leaking
@@thewrenchmaster122 that's a good option if you cant physically see the issue👌
So, the car will whine if the power steering pump is bad even when not turning the wheel?
well if there is no power steering fluid in the system then yes because the power steering pump is belt driven
There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir.
My car on start up makes a loud squeaky sound then goes away once engine warms up. I can turn the wheel and doesn't make any sound but when I step on the accelerator she squeaks loud. It's wired it goes away at idle once it's warm but is loud as hell when I rev it up.
I'm guessing it is not the power steering, but more likely a belt making the noise.
Thanks very much for this video. It rlly clear alot of my problems as far with the car whininning and the mechanic that supposely change that piece and my car still whinning and someone check and told me the mechanic lied big time and stole my money because the piece is.old and rusty. :((
