This is such a wise, sensible, and balanced review. I just love it. You made me buy this device. I love your channel. Huge respect. I agree on most points and especially viewing this as the first step on a journey. When the 13" comes out, I will most likely upgrade and leave this excellent and super portable device to delight my dad who is looking to replace his 10" mini laptop that's 10+ years old (I guess he can wait a little longer ;-)). I also agree about the biggest selling point of it over other tablets or laptops being the eink screen. As a new - indeed totally new (this is my first eink and my first tablet and I had no idea what eink was a few weeks ago, yes I was living under a rock!) - convert, I fully testify to that. I find huge joy and a sizeable bump in my mental health from being able to use this in bright sunlight rather than having to hide in a cave with a laptop in order to use it at the lowest screen brightness possible to protect my eyes and get a little more out of the battery when on the go. I cannot understate the value of this. It's a tectonic shift for me and I believe it will be for many others with the same background. I agree about the ridiculous reduction of the battery. I solved this by buying the lightest possible portable charger to keep on me for both my phone and the tablet. It gives just enough juice to survive and not weigh you down. I also fully agree about this NOT being the most user friendly device and there is very little out there on how to optimize it. So I am looking for future videos from you on that front. I am especially struggling with the colors, they just look terrible and I still have no idea why. Luckily most of what I use does not heavily rely on color but I noticed that sometimes there is a field to type in something and it is invisible on hte Boox - that's when it can really affect the workflow. Most importantly, I fully agree that this is much more like a laptop. Nowadays when so many apps are online, you can really use your desktop productivity apps on Android and everything is synched. The only point where I disagree is the keyboard. I am now writing this comment on the TUCPro using a 30EUR generic Bluetooth keyboard that weighs about 100 grams or so. It is a standard size (sans the keypad) with a trackpad (!), and can be used in any position relative to the device. As a professional writer with carpal tunnel, the keyboard size and ease of use is very important to me. I have not tried the 170EUR keyboard case from Boox but it seems to me that both the price, the weight, the size, and offering one single position of use for such a high end device rather than making it Bluetooth are kind of sub-optimal. Especially so given that the screen size ratio is not the now standard 'hd' type but those 10 inches are distributed in a way that is clearly intended for a lot of portrait use. Just make the damn thing Bluetooth. Another downside I find is that some apps, including Chrome, are visually problematic on this device. Even on the best resolution possible, Chrome tabs and the address bar take a ridiculous amount of visual space that is not reducible in size. It is super annoying to lose that space for no obvious value in return. I prefer the native boox browser for that reason, because it has the option to go full screen or near-full screen, albeit at the expense of losing the convenience of all my chrome history, bookmarks etc synched. On the note of native apps, I wish every app came with some kind of in-built help. And if it does, it is so obscure that I can't find it yet... The resolution is also underthought in other areas, e.g. the home screen, where the icons are ridiculously huge and I could not find a way to make them smaller in order to fit more. Same regarding the boox own settings menus. It's a waste of space. My final complaint is that the pen is WAY too heavy for continuous use and - this is minor but - having just one magnetic side where it attaches can be inconvenient. All that said, I have 0 regrets in buying the TUC pro. Sorry about the long comment but I hope my somewhat unique experience as a total newcomer to eink might help someone, just as I've been helped so much by this channel already. Great video as always Kit. All the best and can't wait to see what the new year will bring in terms of future models. Please consider making some use hack videos like best practices for battery life, color optimization, apps and stuff like that.
Just a terrifically delivered review. I particularly was impressed with the conceptual models of (a) that you have to be conscious of your workflow and be willing to do the work to learn the capability of the tablet so you know how to properly integrate it into your workflow...what I call the "there's no magic wand here"-effect, and (b) understanding that the current Tab Ultra C Pro is itself an evolutionary step forward in capability but that there will (should?) be more steps and we get to watch evolution unfold. (b) sort of implies that the Boox folks are using a product development vector that points towards greater capability, as opposed to just "different" / "diversification".
This is what it is, I've used the NA3C and returned it. The performance with the TUCP is awesome, it works smooth and fast. I've bought a Bluetooth Spanish keyboard and it works fine.
I used to use the b&w tab ultra as an overpowered eink typewriter. Was going to get the og tab ultra c, now that the pro is out I’m going to get that instead, because I miss my tab ultra. And I love my tab mini c. Great for writing my novel or blog!
Had I seen this video yesterday, I would have clicked the buy button after you mentioned that you were able to use it with blacklight off. But I've decided to wait for the b/w version.
Many thanks for all of your great insights. I just bought the Boox Note Air 3 C, in part based on your reviews. Since you work both with a Boox Ultra C Pro and a home PC, I was wondering if you have developed any efficient ways to work on note/word apps simultaneously on both-- starting your notes on the Boox and refining them on the desktop? Clunky barely describes my solutions so far.
I bought one; but the battery just last 11hrs with wifi on and 2 apps running. I asked for a return at day 15. The customer service tried many things to deny the request. I had to file a purchase dispute with my credit company. The battery is bad; it does not support normal operation.
Since I purchased my Boox device, I have had nothing but issues with the touch screen. Only calling out for a buyers beware. Capacitive touch keeps going to "Unknown." I have to open a ticket. They have to send me a firmware update. And then it fails again a couple of weeks later. Just a warning to people before purchasing that I find the hardware to be unstable.
A firmware update is need in Boox note taking app : 1. The ability to create table of contents like in superonte a5x and a6x 2. link star should be like supernote do you could know it is registered.
Am I the only one who wants either a 3-in-1 Boox Ultra book (see, the wordplay writes itself on that one) or a Surface clone with 13” display? Either are freestanding, and integrate peripherals for far less weight than a keyboard case.
Question about limitations regarding the size and complexity of the pdf document. For example, is it possible to open a pdf document of an architectural plan of the house, paper size A2 or larger? Is it possible to zoom and write notes on such a document?
Hi Kit first of all thanks for all the great content. I probably am not the first to say this but you remind me of Tim Roth from “Lie to me” series :) my question is that since you own both NA3C and Tab Ultra C Pro do you feel a performace difference? My use case would be in a portrait case most of the time so not usong the case keyboard except in rare occasions a bluetooth keyboard and being in a normal case the camera bump is not an issue. Would use it mainly for note taking, reading, browsing articles sometimes with split screen to notes, pdf, mind mapping, whiteboards (zoom whiteboard) Miro app and email.
I am a long time viewer and admirer of your work, but here i dont agree. I bought the Tab mostly based on this video but i was very disapointed. Three days battery live: Never. The Tab lost 6% Battery over night, of course turned off. With 20% Backlight it lasted 4 hours writing in Notes and OneNote. The performance is good, no doubt. For me battery life is essential, and here i expect more from a 700 Euro device. Sent it back.
Thanks for sharing your experience here. And sorry that my advice lead to you getting an unsatisfactory experience. I would recommend having a look at the new Note Air 3 (black and white) which should have considerably better battery life, or failing that take a look at the kindle scribe which certainly will not break the bank. The battery performance is a well documented drawback of the BSR Boox devices.
I noticed that the brightness is slightly lower on one side compared to the other. Is it just mine, or is it normal? I observed this at a brightness level of 40-50%.
In all of your videos of the Tab C Pro I’m trying to see now long it takes to open an app. In probably every single case, you edit out the time it takes to do so and skip to the app already open. I have the Tab C and I still don’t know if the performance is truly better on the Pro.
Hiya, yeah! Sorry, I know! There's a balance between editing and showing things real time. You probably need to see my live stream comparison of the two, I leave them both on screen and skip about a bit. Conclusion was, it wasn't so much faster that you should be desperate to upgrade!
I'm trying to write a book and have been using a laptop for years but the eye strain is too much and I get distracted too much from the internet, would this be useful as a word processor?
Hi Kit! Is it possible to switch key layout on keyboard case via software? I'm particularly interested in Czech layout for we have almost same layout as English except we have QWERTZ and special letters on buttons with numbers. Have a great day!
What it can do and what I can do with it are vastly different. My job's corporate policy prevents me from using office 365, email, vpn, etc... so that I cannot use it where it might shine. I can use RDP but it is not a comfortable experience. Unfortunately, this limitation is not unique to me.
A quick question about voice typing: do you have any idea why it stops after a few sentences? I tried to play a recording of my voice into it in order to have it typed up and use it as a draft for a text, but it kept interrupting. Very annoying! That was the native voice typing option in the native notes app. I will try with google too but for now I'm wondering if it's an option that can be toggled or it's really just like that.
If you have one of your templates open for note taking are you able to type in numbers I have a remarkable and in my job I have to draw my project but I don’t like drawing my numbers it would be nice to type a number anywhere on the screen to coincide with my drawing you can’t do this with the remarkable
Kit....have any advice on linking my Note Air 3 C to my OneDrive? My provider of Office requires me to use the Authenticator on my phone to link the Boox device but when I go to Authenticate the screen on the Note Air 3 just goes all white
@@KitBetts-Masters yeah it is a weird issue that only happens with Google Meet. That's one of my deal breakers of using boox tab ultra last time as my tablet replacement.
