Spindle lock for PM25 milling machine

  • A spindle lock is added to the Precision Matthews PM25MV milling machine to safely and quickly change the tool. The spindle lock is installed inside of the head to avoid changing the belt drive or the belt guard. Use of the spindle lock is compared to other methods of changing the tool. Faster tools changes greatly improves the productivity of the CNC conversion. Spindle locks may work on similar mills, e.g., Grizzly G0704 and Titan TM25.

    the collar on the spindle is genius. initially i thought you are going to use some spur gear inside the head. Great job Kent.

      Thank you, though I'm not sure how much genius it was. Surely a machinist would have come up with a better solution. This was more the "this problem has to get fixed now" sort of solution :)

    The spindle lock is one of the most useful changes I've made to my PM-25 mill. It ranks along side the CNC modifications. I wish it would be a standard feature on an otherwise great mill.

    Really nice job Kent! I might try to replace the engagement holes in the sleeve to vertical grooves so the mounting of the pin and sleeve are less exacting. In any case, this is a pretty elegant solution. One other thing, I have a hard time cutting stock that big straight. What we need is a really long parting tool and auto feed. Then all we'd have to do is start the auto feed and run!

      Hi Bill, thank you. I have a new version that I need to finish the video for. It uses a plunger switch so LinuxCNC knows when the spindle is locked and will not turn on the spindle. With that version, the shaft only slides - it's not threaded and does not turn into the lock body. I like the idea of using grooves instead of holes in the collar. Maybe you'd want to use some ideas from version 2?

      It just occurred to me that the pin could be driven by a solenoid operated by a 3 way toggle switch that also breaks the circuit to the green on button, while the toggle lights red. When ready toggle is flipped, it's red light goes out, withdraws the pin and turns the on switch green again.

      Sounds brilliant! Maybe v.3? :) For v.2.5: I have a spindle motor with a brake but unfortunately the brake is not enough to hold the spindle when changing the TTS tool.

      Thank you Aaron. It's still going strong even after the turning on a locked spindle on more than I can remember, despite having a habit to check the lock is off. Reason enough I should stick with a small motor (and add a lock out) :)

      Hi Mike. Drop me an email and I'll send you drawings. If you need it, I do have one of the bodies machined that has the option for a lockout switch or simple plunger. You'd need to make the sliding bolt and ring for the spindle.

    great updeat, i heave the same mill (pxtools red colour) but No cnc, i broke a few cutters by this way (fall out when untighten), so must to do this mod.
    but i heave a transmission on this position, do you remove them?

      Hi, I watched several of your videos, and they are all really interesting. I especially liked the DIY sandblaster. I saw the mill transmission in ruclips.net/video/ldq5VXNAcio/видео.htmlm8s. I don't have any experience with this, but your mill looks similar to Grizzly's G0758. The manual has an exploded mechanical drawing. cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g0758_m.pdf

      +Δημήτρης Hi Dimitris, it's great to hear from you. Yes, it's a cam lock. Maybe D1-3? Do not seem to be many small lathes with cam locks.

      Ha! :) With that original drawbar, and it's 8mm head, what's a person to do? I plan to reduce the hex to match the metric clamping set nuts I use and make a drawbar wrench. There are several examples of people making them using a socket. Thanks for the comment
