I understand this ending as a loop, she tells him, she will always wait for him, he doesn't have a courage to accept the reality yet, so in my understanding, he just get out of the car, walks into the bathroom distressed, then he supresses everything again, walks out with thought: "I got a letter, the name on the enveloped said Mary..."

He is NOT a voice actor, is an actor, look this thing up, most people still think video games are only animated and thats not true, they use the same system as movies like avatar, actors put on mocap suits and act everything in a big room with the elements they interact with in the scene, you can search it by silent hill 2 remake (or any game not that old like from the 2000 up front, though even the first silent hill which came out in 1999 if in not wrong used this system) mocap or making of and you will be able to look the real time acting, this is the reason why the actors look so much like the characters, because they usually make them alike so physically doesnt give troubles with the disigned character, even the walk, running and everything in game is acted, not animated. There are several known actors who worked on videogames like Norman reedus, Willem Dafoe, Giancarlo Esposito, Elliot Page, Rami Malek, Jesse Williams, etc

    • @JoeyOverdose

Honestly how they'd translate the dialogue was one of my biggest concerns going into the Remake. SH2's dialogue was stilted but it added to the dreamlike, surreal nature of the whole experience. The new voices in the HD edition solidified that just having an actor read lines, even extremely talented ones like Troy Baker, can't quite capture the emotional state you got from the original (though I will die on my hill that Laura Bailey's Angela was excellent).
You obviously can't keep the fractured style of the original games' script in a more modern game with more dialogue, so how do you convey the same depth of character without messing it up? Well, Luke nailed it.
James's voice and acting comes off unquestionably as somebody who is severely depressed. Not sad; depressed: numb to emotions. His limited reactions to the monsters and horrific things makes sense (maybe even moreso than the original) because he's just not emotionally capable of fully processing it. Even when he says lines meant to be hopeful there's an underlying feeling of disbelief, like he doesn't want to risk being hopeful in the fear he'll be burned again. As somebody with severe depression it's uncanny how much I can understand James' emotional state from just Luke's performance.
Not only that, he's kind of a socially awkward dork, one that's harmless but doesn't quite gel with others. His interactions with Maria are excellent in this regard, where you also get to see him slowly open up to her in real time, hinting at how he was probably a completely different man when with Mary before.
All of this stuff was mostly subtext in the original game, something I feared Bloober would miss. But Luke completely understood the project and knocked it out of the park. His mannerisms are perfect, performance perfect, it really does feel like how I saw the OG James in SH2.

But there is no letter. There never was. In later parts of the game, particularly after the hotel video reveal, if you check your inventory you'll see the letter progressively disappear, first as a blank piece of paper then as not being in your inventory at all.
James isn't living with his guilt, his pain, he's rejecting it. Again. And then he goes looking for Mary once again...

Okay so, as a Silent Hill fanatic this is by far my favorite ending as well as what I think is the "true" ending and here's why. (also apologies for sounding rushed)
Dog and Alien ending are excluded because those are just fun.
The Maria ending is essentially James not learning anything from his time in Silent Hill and doomed to repeat the same cycle.
Leave ending to me doesn't make sense because James is a murderer, I don't think Laura at 8 years old would decide to leave and possibly be adopted by the unstable man that murdered her friend/mother figure. James' dad Frank Sunderland mentions in Silent Hill 4 that his son and daughter in law disappeared, Douglas Cartland in Silent Hill 3 mentions to Heather that he went to Silent Hill once on a missing persons case and never found "him". I always had thought he meant James but that is just my own personal theory.
In water always made the most sense to me, and to some of the key players in Team Silent and James' OG voice actor. Unable to live with what he has done and wanting to be reunited with Mary by offing himself off. Silent Hill 2 at its core is a love story. A hauntingly dark one
in Stillness, James sees Mary who comforts him the moment he is about to off himself. He asks "will you wait for me?" to which Mary says "I've always been waiting for you". flashback to James and Maria's convo in Heaven's Night. This a "hopeful" version of the In Water ending. I believe James decides to go on living knowing when his time comes Mary will be there as she promised, decides to drive the car into the lake, jumping out and giving Mary a sort of proper burial (since her body is in the backseat). Stillness is to hope undying theme Maria mentioned

I’ve been apprehensive to buying the game but this ending has convinced me otherwise. I was worried the remake will try to answer questions that have no answer but given the vague nature and the stunning performance by Luke Robert I am fully convinced to buying the game.
Me personally I see this as a mixture of the Leave and In Water ending. James is unable to commit suicide and opts for giving Mary a water burial as James moves on with his life with the guilt looming over him like a cloud. He is convinced that Mary wanted him to live on and when he finally meets his end he will be reunited with her. He does not adopt Laura because of the guilt and her affiliation with Mary serves as a constant reminder of what he did. It is a bittersweet ending. Yes James lives on but unable to forgive himself.

This is my favorite ending and it makes the most sense for me too. Mary forgives him, but james cant forgive himself and wants to die but loves mary too much to know she wouldn't want him to give up living, but i ALSO cant see laura forgiving james and willingly leave with him like in the leave ending. That always bugged me like laura knows james killed mary why is she leaving with him lmao.

  • @MariaMiquilena-v5t

The reason james kills himself here is because like he says he cant go on without mary. So in this order he asks her "would you wait for me" and she says "i've always waiting for you" as if she always knew that he couldnt live without her and eventually he will commit suicide as is the only way to be with her in dead.

I've watched this a few times. Here is my take.
James killed Mary out fatigue and depression. He can't bear to see his wife withering and dying slowly and he was definitely heavily burdened by the responsibility of taking care of his dying wife for 3 long years. It was like snap in the moment. Mary on the other hand was already in a state of acceptance. She knew she will die, there was no cure. Though she threw tantrum and did broke down asking James not to leave her alone, deep down she wished for the pain to end.
James definitely loved Mary to the core but shit happened. He cannot forgive himself for the killing and thus he created the whole delusional scenario where he got the letter and went straight to Silent Hill.
In the final scene, Mary the ghost had already accepted her death and forgive James, it was only James who felt the ultimate guilt and regret about his action. James, up until the final scene was not able to forgive himself, contrary to what Mary wanted him to be.
So, this ending is a good closure in the most realistic way. It continues the mental state of James unable to forgive himself whilst Mary soothed him and reassured him that she understood and that she will always wait for him in the afterlife. That is proven during the lines where james said "im so, so sorry" and Mary answered with "it's okay", continued with James asking "will you wait for me?" and Mary answered "i've always been waiting for you".
About the car plunging into the lake, i believe that James did jumped out of the car at the final moment. This is hinted by
    1. him not reading the final letter which he just looked at the passenger seat. It is a directive of James wishing to put an end to this whole Mary tragedy without any regrets and second thoughts that may come after reading the letter.
    2. The dialogue earlier "will you wait for me?" "I've always been waiting for you". I think if he chose to die on the spot, he will say something like "i'm coming for you" or words to that effect.
    Just my two cents.

When I was watching the ending, I thought it was going to end with James leaving, similar to the Leave ending but changing by symbolizing him choosing to accept Mary's death and treating his arrival to Silent Hill as a mistake more than the way to a new path (which is symbolized by him walking out the gate with Laura in Leave)

There is a lot of speculation about wether James killed Mary out of mercy or selfish reasons, my personal opinion is that it was both, in one of the endings he confesses to Mary that he hated her and wanted to live his life, also how he always says "she died 3 years ago" when we actually know she was killed not too long ago to the events of the game, meaning when she fell sick she "died" to him. Now I'm sure we can all agree that he feels guilty hence he being in Silent Hill, and deeply regrets his decision, the ending of his fate however is for the player to decide. Another reason to back up his reasoning behind killing her out of selfish reasons are seen in the monsters, this game is very intentional with what they show to the player and every detail is key to the story, most if not all monsters are portrayed as sexual and grotesque, multiple videos I found reviewing the monsters (except Abstract daddy which we know is connected to Angela and not James) state that they are manifestations of James guilt and sexual frustration for not being able to be intimate with Mary due to her sickness, and also why Maria is this sexualized version of Mary that James probably wanted her to be. If anything this only adds to his frustrations and desires for wanting to move on hence killing her.
This is what I personally believe!

Because we've seen a lot of James dead body in SH which explains that he's in a loop.
But after a while, James realize that Mary is Really dead. So he's actually breaking the loop at the beginning of the game, by drove his car to the lake with mary's body in it, with James finally realized that Mary is dead.

In the context of Silent Hill, you create your own reality (or are drawn into the elements of someone elses) and it's entirely real, not a figment. So it's actually both. It's in his head. But in Silent Hill it's also actually happening. It might even be the real Mary, if James memory is true enough to make her indistinguishable from how she was in life. It would be the part of her that was real to him.
Linear thinking isn't too useful in a place like this.
