You’ve heard the songs even if you don’t know her name. A prime Bollywood playback singer in the 1940s, Shamshad Begum is the voice behind hits like Kajra Mohabbat Wala, Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar, Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar - songs that continue to be lazy Sunday favorites, while many from younger generations would have heard some of them as remixes, too.
With her sensuous, lilting voice, Shamshad Begum, one of the first women to sing playback for Hindi movies and senior to both Lata Mangeshkar and Noor Jahan, was much sought after by ace music composers like O.P. Nayyar, S.D. Burman and Naushad. With tens of hundreds of songs under her belt, she was not only versatile but also multilingual, with recordings in Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi, Tamil, and Bengali. She often sang duets with Mangeshkar and her sister, Asha Bhosle.
Born on 14 April 1919, she battled a conservative family in order to pursue her singing career and to marry outside of her religion at the age of 15. Though she displayed talent as a child, she didn’t receive any formal training. But under the mentorship of music composer Ghulam Haider and sarangi maestro Ustad Hussain Baksh, her career began in the late 1930s when she started singing for All India Radio in Peshawar and Lahore.

In 1950 as a7 yrs. Child I was brought to live in Bombay(now Mumbai)from Mysore state.Was not knowing Hindi.I used to hear songs by Shamshadji & hum them as I understood w/o knowing the words or meaning.Years later found out about the singer.Her sharp, crisp voice still lingers in my ears.Thanks for this bio.

Shamshad Begum had a unique and crystal clear appealing voice .. in duets songs her voice was always dominating over other co singers. for example in duet Door koi Gae Dhun yeh sunaey .. her voice is at its peak.. same as le ke pehla pehla peyar and jhumka bareli wala etc .. but she was ignored after fame of Lata Ji and Asha ji... Sometimes I feel that some songs should be more melodious if Shamshad give her voice to them for example .. Asha ji's song "Ek pardesi mera dil le gea " if shamshad should sang it, it would be more melodious

Padma bhushan in 2009 ? It took govt. so long to recognize her talent. The media could not even keep track of one of the most legendry singers till that time. Her voice is so mesmerising and it will appeal to the generations to come. I totally appreciate her promise give to her father. Sad that we don't have any of her interviews.

I am now 77 years of age and although our financial position was not good during my childhood days, I remember hearing her voice and songs sung by her on our neighborhood radios and on gramophones played during or on auspicious occasions in my surroundings areas. She set an example for others to select what suits one & is appropriate for an individual.
