  • In May 2021 I decided to hike the whole Lycian Way in Turkey. During the trail I began to wonder what are the reasons why people would hike these long distances.
    In this video, I will be going through
    "8 reasons why hike 500 km on Lycian Way?"
    For more detailed information about the hike and Lycian Way please see the blog post:

    Hi Tanel,
    Enjoyed the film and especially the reasons for walking. Would be good if you marked these spots in the film. I'm using it for material for a course on marketing cultural routes. You started too late in the year, though. Trail is best in Feb-March most years. all best with your next trek. Kate Clow

      Thank you Michael!
      I didn't have any paper map but was using an app called TrekRight. It was really useful to have it. It also showed places for camping and water sources.
      There are plenty of water sources on the way. But I still carried 2.5-4 liters of water with at all times because you use a lot of water throughout the day.

      @@expatadventureturkey9324 You will find plenty of wells and water reservoirs on this way, HOWEVER I would highly recommend you NOT TO use any of them. Even if you use a life-straw/sawyer or boil it for seven hours in a row. Do it and you might end up in hospital. In most cases you simply can not see what is inside this well. I've seen hell lot of wells and water reservoirs full of tadpoles and other nasty livings ending up with drawn rats. Therefore, live streams only or long basins with water flowing in it.

    • @expatadventureturkey9324

      @@expatadventureturkey9324 There is another tip: If you are planning to go in April (I did it in April too as it's the best time to go), the weather can get hot. I mean so hot that the water in the bottle that you filled up this morning becomes like a warm tea. I bet if you put a teabag in it you'll get a bottle of warm tea. Seriously. :) I kept it in outside pocket of my bag, which made it even more hot).
      Don't ask me how, but my colleague used hydration bladder and that kept water cool. Cool enough to get hydrated.
      If you prefer wild camping and choose to stay in a tent rather than camping place/bungalo, then you'll require plenty of water to carry with you (for cooking and washing). Hint: Use regular plastic bottles (1.5L or 2L depends how much you use). When not in use, suck all air out and this way they will not take any space in your bag. Fill them up like few hours before finishing your day and setting up a camp.
      One more thing from what I can remember. I'd recommend to start your day early: Weather in midday can get surprisingly hot and may become a torture especially when going up the hill. 18:00 in the evening you can call it a day and set up. It's getting dark really quickly, literally in minutes. Snooze a minute and you'll be crawling around with a head torch in pitch black terrain. Easy to loose some of your items, like tent pegs etc.
      The landscape is quite rocky there and hard, so I would recommend you a dome tent or any similar construction tent. Avoid tunnel tent in this case - requires too many pegs.
      Also, when clearing up a space for your tent from rocks, don't be tempted to use hands. Carefully inspect the area before you put up your tent. A lot of nasty livings including scorpions that hide behind rocks and come out at night time. Use your boots instead. And don't lean your bag to any rocks while setting up a camp - same reason here. Try to keep all your gear inside the tent (even stinky footwear:)). Whatever is kept outside can become a new home for creepy hitchhikers.
      Navigation: I don't know what is going on in these days, but from my personal experience I can say that there was no 100% accurate map. Having a Lycia Way Map 2017 (was up to date back then) www.amazon.co.uk/Turkey-Fethiye-Antalya-Topographic-Atlas-Index/dp/1546512071/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=lycian+way+map&qid=1638894893&sr=8-4 and two GPS navigators, Kate Clow's book (absolutely useless) + using help of locals we managed to loose the track. Sometimes we had to ignore the signs to get back on a track. This way is unfortunately poorly market (you can walk for miles without seeing any red/white sign and suddenly see 2 signs on one stone). Really weird. Use your sense and app which Tanel used before. Again, we realized that the route sometimes splits in two ways: One official and unofficial. If you want to go fast - walk official. If you enjoy the scenery and picturesque views but slower - walk unofficial.

    The way you need to start looking at it as as Tokien once said: "Not all who wander are lost." Is there a right way to hike ?? Yes, your way to hike. Why because it is your way of hiking. Your way, or the way of others may not be the same, but your way is the way for you, thus it is the best.

There is a part from Patara Beach East side to Kalkan that people tend to skip because of dogs and the fact that there is mainly roads and greenhouses. Hi! Tough question! Fethiye side seemed to be more popular and with amazing beaches. The centre part and Antalya side with more mountains, cedar trees, flames from the ground and some more remote sections.

      Does the Fethiye side have remote sections as well?

      West from Demre you can always find a homestay. From Demre to east you will need a tent in a few occasions.@@harveyjones4472

    Hey Tanel, I am thinking about hiking the route in April this year. However, like you, I am absolutely terrified of dogs and getting rabies, and considering not going because of this. I am due for my rabies vaccine soon, but I think it will be too much fear for me. Do you have any tips? Do you think dogs will be too much of a problem?

    • @TanelTilk
      @TanelTilk  4 месяца назад

      Unfortunately, dogs are a thing on many hiking trails in the world.. I hope you don't let that fear hold you back though! With just a few tricks you should be more than fine.
      1. Have a stick that you can put between you and the dog (if you use walking poles it is perfect to have them)
      2. Don't turn your back to the dog. When passing then turn and back out.
      3. They are usually territorial. So the main thing to do is just try to pass that area. But don't run! Then they get more excited.
      4. Pick up a few pebbles/rocks and if they get aggressive you can throw it towards them. Even the movement of reaching to the ground and making the movement of throwing sometimes works.
      5. Pick up a bear/dog/pepper spray before going. Have it nearby (I like to have it in the backpack's front pocket) from where you can grab it from. I have used it twice in Georgia/Armenia.
      But again, don't let it hold you back! I am sure it will be fine and mostly they just bark loudly to get attention and have no intention of attacking you. ;) Happy hiking!

      Hi@@TanelTilk , this is very useful information thank you. I will keep that in mind. Would you say it is easy to get to a hospital in case of being bitten? I have done some research on the closest hospitals but know one seems to talk about it, there seem to be some in the bigger towns such as Kas, and Feithye and Kemer. But I don't know how accessible these are from the route, can you get to them by bus?

    • @TanelTilk
      @TanelTilk  4 месяца назад

      Lycian Way goes through towns, villages and along roads and paths where people move frequently. In that sense, it is easy to get to a town easily. If no buses then for sure you can hitchhike or get a taxi easily. Locals are very helpful.@@ZachILikeGuitar

      Mainly with phone applications. There is an excellent one called "TrekRight: Lycian Way". Also sometimes Maps.me for camping spots.
      Besides that there is a book by Kate Clow which will give you a lot of extra information about the trail.

    Great video! I am planning to hike the Lycian Way and I am wondering how easy it is to find drinking water? How much did you have to carry at any time?

    • @TanelTilk
      @TanelTilk  Год назад +2

      Hey! Drinking water is quite available. Some of it in taps, some of it in wells. It is good to have a filter for the wells. I was carrying 2L in the western part and around 3-4L in the eastern part. I have written more info in an post. You can find the link in the next reply.
