Bach Fugue 3 in C sharp Maj, BWV 848 Pianoteq

  • The fugue does not in any way appear to me of a humorous nature, but
rather breathes peace and cheerful delight: it is of enchanting sound, and full of deep feeling. The numerous feminine endings and harmonic subtleties are quite opposed to such hurrying.
The theme consists of four measures, without ellipses or extensions, and is therefore favourable to symmetrical construction in the first half it is full of expression and submission, and has a feminine ending, but in the second
    it changes, so to speak.
That the number of sections here exceeds three can already be seen by the greater number of elaborate episodes, of which no less than six can be pointed out.
Finally the concluding portion introduces a complete development in the principal key, and this is distinguished from the one at the opening of the fugue, in that it starts at once with two voices (with theme in bass), and is completed by a postlude, not of eight measures, but of six: it is
occupied with the motives does not modulate, and, in it the bass descends to the lowest octave.
But Bach cannot satisfy himself, and by way of coda makes the soprano give the Dux again twice, once quite faithfully, the second time with slight melodic alteration; in the closing motive all four voices appear in broad quaver movement.

I enjoyed this very much! I think you show a personal affection for the music that is usually lacking from professional recordings. I feel it places the music back on earth, where it truly comes from, and is very inspiring to me, another learning and studying these fugues.

Completing this Prelude and Fugue BWV848 is quite an achievement, dear Carmelo, because it is certainly a complex work in many aspects, so congratulations on that. As is customary, you played and interpreted with excellence. Furthermore, thank you for your description of the video, which is very explanatory and very interesting!

WTC 1 is truly a monument and I'm only at the beginning, who knows if I'll ever be able to record it all.. Greetings from very hot Italy today....

At the age of 72, this is the first time I've ever seen an entire composition written in C# (7 sharps) rather than Db (5 flats). They sound and are played exactly the same, owing to the use of equal temperament (which the two books proclaim -- correctly -- to be the future of music), but Db is surely more normal. I think this the only one where this happens. If it were a matter of F# or Gb, there would be nothing to notice -- but this is an odd one to me. Mercifully, I see that the one in Eb isn't in D# (what would that be? 7 sharps and two double-sharps?).

You are really right DactyIntrochee! I also think I have played very few pieces in C sharp major: Bach's two WTC preludes and fugues I and II in C sharp major, a study by Scriabin op 8 n.1 ... Other compositions sincerely I don't remember...
