I am a woman close to 60, I eat a lot of red meat, eggs and dairy AND lift heavy weights. I am the only person I know in my circle that does this. I have muscle, no medical conditions no medications and my coronary artery calcium score is zero! I was “diagnosed” with osteopenia years ago, I don’t think about it I just go to the gym and do all the exercises older people are not supposed to do such as heavy deadlifts, squats, overhead press etc. in the weights area in the gym with all the “meat heads”. I had a bad back 12 years ago when I was the typical middle aged trainwreck and it got better with deadlifts! If my bones were truly weak I should have broken something by now.

Bravo! I am a few years younger than you but this sounds just like my life. The osteoporosis diagnosis put me off my active lifestyle for a while. When things started going downhill I said to heck with this and I lift, hike, bike, ski, etc. I also gave up red meat based on all the nutrition "advice" out there, but started eating it again on advice of my weight lifting adult child and I feel great! Red meat and lifting for the win!!

YEY! Keep it up! I follow an elderly lady who lifts. She's 85. She can deadlift +300lbs. There was a great dynamic at the gym...cuz there was a older man her age that couldn't even pick up a 20lbs...
Weightlifting/resistance is the BEST thing you can do as far as building/retaining muscle mass and preventing/reversing osteoporosis. There is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING that can do this. No pill. No rx. And for ladies, I think weightlifting is the single MOST important thing they SHOULD be doing...forget cardio.
      Cheers!

I’m 57 and the same. I have my weightlifting routine that it’s getting my shape back. Hour glass figure. Up until now I’m healthy and my bones are fine. The only thing I don’t like it’s to eat red meat. I have a gluten free diet and eat eggs but zero lactose in my diet. I’ve never been a fan of red meat.

Love this information, but confused about why you keep bringing up gender identity in multiple interviews. Gender identity and biological sex are two different things and I think you are doing more harm than good in making digs at communities who are already horribly discriminated against and face violence. Don’t know why you keep doing that.

SO .... your podcasts have motivated me so much that I have for the past six months been consistently exercising with a focus on weight training .. I am estrogen dominant - recent blood work has revealed off the chart levels so for me, exercise is non-negotiable. It literally will mean my life as excess estrogen causes all sorts of issues from unwanted facial hair on women to cancer. I have lost two inches off my waist, belly and hips!!! My endurance has improved and I love my kettle bell workouts now! But the most wonderful benefit so far is that my liver enzymes have gone down from 49 to 20! Thank you Mike for doing these podcasts - it has helped me greatly to get my mind right to stay on a path to a healthier version of myself. 🙂

I have personal trainer sessions twice weekly, where we focus on strength training - working all muscle groups in succession. Then, I do at home kettle bell work outs twice weekly to help reinforce my focus on strength training. I also swim laps once weekly usually on Sundays. As for nutrition, I have added DIM, NAC, and curcumin to help my body metabolize the excess estrogen. I have blood work twice yearly to monitor my levels.

Dr. Tyna is spot on about vegan/vegetarianism - I was in the same boat. I distinctly remember a low-point when a fat primary care doctor was simultaneously praising me for my extrodinarily low cholestrol (and mentioning my low iron and protein and told me to take iron(which doesn't work)) as she wrote me another perscription for an anti-depressant.... Truth is, protein, fat, cholesterol = LIFE GIVING FOOD.
It is also so hard to find a naturopathic doctor in PNW nowadays, they push "the juice".

The next day I looked and felt like a different person! My cheeks were flushed with health. And my mood improved. My work out and lifting are energized. I’m always going to have enough protein through whole foods from now on.

    • @GaryHighFruit

"my low iron and protein ... anti-depressant"
I bet you weren't eating enough (common with women). That is THE only way to be low in protein. There are FRUITARIANS who lift weights and have big muscles. I purposefully eat a low-protein diet (vegan 27 years), and I have not lost strength. I'm doing fine. Excess protein promotes cancer, and metabolic problems.
And I've concluded that much of the depression is really lack of calories.
That doctor suggested you need meat to get sufficient protein. That is so false. So no, she is not spot on.

Each to their own- I healed a herniated disc (that was causing severe pain for over a year)- by eating raw vegan and practising a lot of yoga for a few months. I think the absence of processed food and lots of vitamins and nutrients was more important than the raw vegan part. Nowadays I eat a Mediterranean diet (vegetables, fish, eggs, dairy) and I feel good. I live in Italy where produce is really high quality and pace of life is slow and relaxed. I also think your genetics come into play. I used to be a vegan and had terrible results, but it seems people who’s ancestors are close or closer to the equator also do better with veganism. Two things that I have done that truly changed my life was starting keto 4 years ago along with joining a gym. But in the last 2 months I’ve taken on powerlifting and this has really made a giant difference in my health and physique. The “Starting Strength” program was a definite game changer. Like Rip says “You gotta get better at living”. Thanks guys!

Are you still doing keto? Have you gotten bloodwork done since? I did very strict keto for 4 months (absolutely loved it) but my LDL cholesterol entered the danger zone quite fast so I stopped. I've heard this happening to many people, curious what you experienced?

I've done keto for 5 yrs now, but recently started calisthenics. SERIOUS game changer! I thought with all my old injuries that I couldnt, but it's actually healing them. (Yes I'm still keto.) 😊🍵🌸

@@snakejazz yeah, numbers were perfect. That's one reason I quit my doc. She wanted me to quit keto after 4 yrs even though my numbers were fine. I have a Naturopath, a chiropractor, and a Nutritionist now.

@@snakejazz but I also do healthy keto. That might be a deciding factor. I've met so many ppl who don't eat a single green thing on keto and wonder why they feel horrid.
Keto "treats" can also be a prob. I've had blood sugar spikes on treats that were labeled fine that clearly weren't. Half of every meal needs to be keto friendly produce. Then even keto flu is no existent.

Love! Boy, does this speak to my questioning, rebellious, bootstrap nature. Resilience and responsibility. I'm 54. I adore vegetables and eat a ton of vegan and vegetarian recipes -- and then I add in dairy or meat sometimes. I follow no restrictions. I just love vegetables. When vegan recipes call for substitutes, I just use real cheese, butter, eggs, whatever. I love it ALL. And I don't bake often, but when I do, it all the good, decadent, rich basics. I don't listen to the fear mongers who ignore hundreds of years of food experience (and logic).

A rheumatologist told me some eight or so years ago to never run, only walk, or it would hurt my joints further. I started building muscle through carnivore a couple of years ago, and a month ago I just suddenly knew one day (just knew it) that I should do some short runs in my walk. And I did. And within the first two runs (and I am talking only 0.1 miles of running) my joints had 99% relief. My hips are fine now. I had started worrying about replacement. My right knee needs a little more time to fully heal, but is so much better. I can go down stairs just fine now. I can get into an Asian squat (could only barely stoop down before). Having built muscle, listening to my body's plea for activity and getting just a little running in has turned the tide for me. I'm 65. Getting healthier with these tools.

No, no there is 10% of patients like me with intestinal asthma caused by food which causes allergies and digestive problems. Avoiding wrong food cured me after getting blood tests about my blood immune system. Personally I am a graduated biologist/gardener here in Germany and I am one of the patients with intestinal asthma. Doing gardening many hours a day and training my muscles. Carrying hundreds of litres of water daily for my organic vegetables and with my own hands digging etc. gives muscle strength. The beauty of my sustainable flower garden gives hope and encouragement too. Happiness of family, friends, neighbors and customers who receive my products are a nourishing feedback. Wildlife is doing great here too in my official region called 'Biosphärenreservat Elbtalaue'. Take care of the food, air water, radiation and other energies in your environment.

I’ve Been doing bodybuilding (not competitive) since I was 15 after being extremely under weight and anemic at lbs at 5’4”,due to a very high gluten intolerance. The concept of building muscle saved my life and I cannot imagine my life without it. Im 28 now and will never let go. My parents are in their late 60s and early 70s and I push them to build muscle and maintain it. God bless you and your family ❤️
