As a modern, progressive Mennonite (pink pixie cut to prove it even) I find her works fascinating. This is definitely on my list for this year. I also need to read A Complicated Kindness.
Religious conversations about where forgiveness stops and where justice should start are always so difficult because too often we religious people put the burden of change on those who have been hurt. It's a huge injustice.
The progressive Mennonites that I know are indeed that - progressive. Though certainly the burden does seem disproportionately placed on women.
A Complicated Kindness so very much reflected my experience, my family childhood, of the old colony Mennonite order.

As a cultural (not religious) Mennonite I always cringe when non-Mennonites try to give a description, but I have to say you nailed it perfectly. Great review!
Thanks! Though in Southern Ontario we've always shared space with a fairly robust and diverse Mennonite community.
I absolutely loved WOMEN TALKING. The way that she focuses in on these women and how we as readers listen as they talk through their problems and decide their own fates, for possibly the first time, was just so well done. I know a lot of people had a lot of issues with August, but I appreciated how he was a bridge for the reader to understand Mennonite culture, which is so different from the mainstream. When Autumn and I talked to her, she was so kind and gracious with our slew of questions about her writing process for WOMEN TALKING. My love for this book inspired me to go out and find all of the Vintage Canadian Matching editions. One of goals for next year is to read more Canadian lit, so I'm very excited to just into the rest of her novels in 2020.

I really liked this novel. I thought the choice of a male narrator in a book that was all about how women communicate was interesting. I realize that he was both literate and shunned by the men in the community, but I still felt as though Toews was making a point about how even when these women were attempting to take their power they still had to go through a male gatekeeper. And I was also curious as to how reliable a narrator he actually was.
He also provides a bit of levity and an outside perspective that's needed to let the barn loft hothouse breath a bit. He also bears some responsibility for the next generation - it's not enough to listen but and be accountable but to actively work to make things better.
I bought this book because of all the reviews on Booktube. Now I'll finally read it because of you. Enjoy your holiday.

I absolutely ADORED this book! It's not a book I would usually love, since it's very dialogue heavy, but it was so amazing! Was the live table reading as awesome as it sounds??
It took some time to settle into the read as it was a very diverse cast which jarred against the picture that I had painted in my own head and they incorporated aspects of choreography into the play too. But to hear it aloud is something - it's made for the stage.
Such a phenomenal book, really enjoyed your discussion about it!

It got lost in the noise - especially with all the focus on Atwood this year in terms of CanLit. Totally worth checking out.
Truly fascinating that this has turned into a movie. I'll need someone to watch the movie with me. I was told about this "story" not long after it arose. Forgiveness was the goal. Blessed inviolable forgiveness. For every injustice, no matter the scenario, no matter the lack of "repentance" even.

Sorry, no I have no idea - I think Robert is the only one who has the keys to see, though maybe he lets folks take a peek under the covers at the in person meet which I'm sad will probably not happen this year.

I just have a clarifying question. Were the perpetrators sentenced to 25 years in jail, or were they allowed back after one week? Does this detail change from the real life events to the book?
If there are no consequences to these molesters' acts then the abuse will continue and spread !!!
